Imac g4 does not power on, but everything checks out???

Alas, my (formerly) trusty imac does not power up anymore. I've tried every step in the service manual up to the point of replacing hardware, and so far no luck. Details of the machine, the problem, and what I've done follow.
The short story is that I'm faced with replacing the power supply and/or the logic board after both passed the diagnostic tests recommended in the service manual. Since they both passed the tests, my hopes for success are not high, but at the same time, replacement costs for the two (if I wind up replacing both) run about the same as a replacement machine on ebay! On top of that, I suspect the diagnostic tests available do not test one power supply output -- so maybe it's bad but I just can't tell.
I would appreciate any advice on the situation. Also, does anyone know if the power supply for the 1st gen machines (800MHz, 15") is supposed to have both 12V and 5V outputs? Thanks a bunch!
The computer: iMac G4 flat panel 800MHz, working fine from purchase in January 2002 (right after they came out) until August 2006
The situation: I moved to Japan. Upon unpacking the imac, it would not power on -- no screen, no bong, no sleep light, no fan noise, nada.
What I have tried:
-- taking it to the apple store (they quoted a $500-$800 repair -- ouch!);
-- opening it up and looking for lose wires, burned out power supply components, etc.: nothing found
--try new power cable; test line filter: everything okay
-- reset PMU: no change
-- test battery: checks out, 3.58v; returned battery to imac, reset PMU: no change to computer (i.e. still no power)
--test power supply and logic board points as per service manual instructions; 12 V registered at all points. tests passed. But I wonder: I have read the the PS for some imacs are supposed to have a 5V output too, but there is no test for that output on this model. I wonder if there is a 5V output on this model, and if there is a way to test for it?
for those of you counting, that was 2 resets of the PMU, one before i removed and reinserted the battery, and one after. Both PMU resets were done by pressing the button once and holding for about 1 second.
thanks any and all!

  • 8800 does not power on but shows the charging symbol! HELP!

    Hello everyone,
I have been searching for days now across the web for a solution to a very bugging situation. A'las i am close to giving up. someone please try and help. So here is the problem: I recently bought a 8800 rim (branded for cingular/AT&T but UNLOCKED) from ebay powerseller with 100% rep. it was advertised in MINt condition.
It arrived two days later and seemed in great physical condition.
So i plug in the charger and let it charge for more than 8 hours. I try turning it on but to no avail. During the charge the screen goes dimly on and shows a battery with an electric bolt going through (I assume that means charging..).
It initially seemed to me as a battery problem. So i took it to a local store and borrowed one of their batteries for 8800 and the phone started working fine also made a call with my temporary T-mobile sim inserted. (although their battery was also on low charge)---
So i come home and with a new OEM 8800 battery. plugged it in and charged for like 4 hours and the screen goes on with the charging symbol but does not power on.
I have repeatedly searched through the WWW and came across wide variety of dilemmas but none were any helpful. I also tried installing the latest OS...which also spectacularly failed [got an error that ...loading failed during the mult-load seesion...or something like that. I followed several very well written guides [advising that the manager and OS be installed on PC and etc.].
SO I MAKE A DESPERATE REQUEST FOR HELP FROM ANYONE OUT THERE WHO CAN HELP. WHAT'S THE DIAGNOSIS WITH THIS BB. IT WAS ABLE TO WORK WITH THE BORROWED BATTERY FROM A LOCAL STORE..EVEN MADE A CALL AND EVERYTHING...BUT WITH THE BATTERY THAT CAME WITH THE eBay PURCHASE AND THE THE BRAND NEW THAT I BOUGHT....IT DOES NOT POWER ON.
BESIDES HOW LONG SHOULD I BE CHARGING IF IT IS NEW OR IF THE PHONE HAS NOT BEEN IN USE FROM SOME TIME??
    THANKS IN ADVANCE.
    Please help ASAP.

How are you charging the BlackBerry? Do you have a wall charger or are you charging via USB cable from your PC? Its also possible that the charging circut in your BlackBerry is faulty. This would explain why a charged battery works while your uncharged battery is not.

  • Imac g4 does not power on -- power supply or pmu?

Alas, my (formerly) trusty imac does not power up anymore. Lost of information about the computer and the problem follow, but the ultimate question is:
should i try replacing the power supply or the logic board? which is more likely to be the culprit?
And before anyone mentions it, yes i want to try and repair this one. It is still much cheaper than buying a new a mac mini, since i don't have a monitor for said new mini.
    anyway...
The computer: iMac G4 flat panel 800MHz, working fine from purchase in January 2001 (right after they came out) until August 2006
The situation: I moved, to Japan (military move). Upon unpacking the imac, it would not power on -- no screen, no bong, no sleep light, no fan noise, nada.

So, now I am at the point of replacing either the power supply and/or the logic board. And which should I try first?
Question #2: Is there any difference between power supplies for the various imac G4 versions? i.e. if i find a power supply for an iMac G4 1GHz, can I use it in my 800MHz model?
    thanks any and all!

  • DW CS3 does not display confirmation dialog when checking out file

We have 3 developers set up with DW CS3 Version 9 build 3481.
When checking out a file that is already checked out one pc will
display a dialog box to confirm that you want to check-out the file
as it is already checked out by someone else. This is good as we
want this dialog to appear. However on the other 2 pc's there is no
dialog box displayed and the checkout process continues as if the
    file was never checked out.
The text of the confirmation dialog box reads as such :
"index.cfm is checked out by first.lastname. Are you sure you want
to override his/her checkout?". I have been through the preferences
and verified that we have setup the sites in the same manner but we
    still have this issue.
Is there a known bug regarding this feature? Is there a
preference setting somewhere that I have missed?
    thanks

Are each of your developers sharing the same local site?
    That's why you are
getting this error if they are. The proper setup would
    involve THREE
    locations:
    1. Local sites (unique to each workstation)
    2. Staging server (shared by all workstations)
    3. Production server (the live site)
You would have TWO site definitions, which would be -
    (for each workstation)
    1. Local = #1 (unique location for each workstation)
    2. Remote = #2
    (for one MASTER workstation)
    1. Local = #2
    2. Remote = #3
Use the first site definition for day-to-day work and
    checking files in/out.
Use the second site definition ONLY for pushing files from
    the staging
    server to the production server.
That's the only way it will work....

I have had my iMac for 55 days now and twice I had to power off/on and then It does not power up correctly.  I verified my disk and found errors that could not be repaired (errors were associated with boot drive)  I erased the drive and restored system back to the previous day.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support and let them deal with it. Allen's already recommended an Apple repair station visit. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you might be eligible for an onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine (depends on where you're located).  BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best warranty policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.

Thanks for the flag J.K. - they contaced me and solved my problem.  On this account (which I created just to ask this question), I log in with my email rather than my user name (mtalldud). On the account that I was having trouble with, they told me to use my user ID instead of my email to log in and it worked. This is a bit confusing and seems a bit inconsistent but at least I don't need this temporary account any more to get into this community and find answers!

  • Power button lights up  for a few seconds but does not power up

    Hello
my computer froze up so i shut it down via the power button but now it does not power on when pressing the power button the button lights up but as soon I let go the light goes out and nothing happens not noise form the computer
    anybody can help.

    Hi, racb -
Try resetting the PMU - Article #HT1939 - Resetting CUDA/PMU
Also, it may be time to replace the internal battery. Those batteries have an expected life of about 4 to 5 years; leaving the machine disconnected from live power regularly or for an extended period can reduce that time a lot. You can get a replacement at places like RadioShack for about US$18, cheaper on-line.

how is my laptop working even though I spilled iced tea on it? The keyboard does not light up but works normally, and everything else seems to be in order! The front of the bottom is hot while the rest if mildly warm. I don't know if its going to have a problem in the future. I wiped off as much as I could with a cloth and left it open and upside down for 10-15 minutes. Any idea if I am in the clear?

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service. Do not wait.

I have the macBookPro and the problem is the mouse pad does not work I tried everything but still does not work what should i do ?
so i'm using the usb mouse

I want to clarify the issue.
The issue is with the MBP trackpad, and it works fine with an attached USB mouse.
With some ingenuity, you might be able to fix this yourself, but I suggest visiting your local Apple Store/Genius Bar. Some have fixed this issue and have posted their results online, but the Apple Store should be your first destination.
    Post here with your results!!

  • The backlight on my ipod touch 3rd generation will not come on, but everything works perfectly. I even used the advice given on the tech support page, and it still will not come on. HELP ME PLEASE.

The backlight on my ipod touch 3rd generation will not come on, but everything else is working fine I even took the tech support advice by plugging it in and resetting it, but that didn't fix the issue either. I need help.

    If not this:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem.
    Also heating sometimes works. See:
Why can't I select my wifi settings?
A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Then:
Does the iOS device connect to other networks? See other networks? If yes that tends to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • When I choose external editor in iPhoto on my iMac it does not recognize Aperture. When I do the same on my laptop it works? Any ideas?

When I choose external editor in iPhoto on my iMac it does not recognize Aperture. When I do the same on my laptop it works? Any ideas?

No idea, but Aperture is not an external editor. Like iPhoto, Aperture is a Photo Manager. It's a database. There is no way to round trip a shot from iPhoto to Aperture and back again like you can with Photshop or an image editor.
Given that Aperture does pretty much everything that iPhoto does - and a whole lot more -  it begs the question: why not just use it to manage your photos?

My iMac 27inch screen keeps going black but everything is still running in the background? please help. I have read that apple are recalling 27inch iMacs....

    Hello @DesCherryBomb,
I understand that you are having issues with your HP 2310m monitor going blank and/or flickering. I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. • News - BIG PROBLEM - MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum - DOES NOT POWER!!!

    Hi to everyone.
I'm a proudly owner of a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum that in one year gave me no problem until yesterday morning.
I used the computer in the night before and when I finished I turned it off and I went to bed.
Yesterday morning I found the power led blinking (like if the system was in standby), and there was no way to turn the PC on.
I even took off the battery for more than 12 hours and I left only minimal components installed:
the video card (Gainward GeForce 6800),
    the psu (Antec TruePower 550W),
    1 x 512 MB Ram Crucial Ballistix,
and I checked them into another computer and they work perfectly.
I tried shorting the MB power switch pins with a screwdriver and I've even tried to power on the system without the Memory or the Video Card... I've tried everything that came across my mind with no efforts!!!!
Every time I give power to the MB appens only that the power led starts blinking, but pressing the button the PC doesn't turn on.
PLEASE HELP ME... I really don't know what else to do!!!
    Thanks,
    Alberto

    Hi thanks for the answers.
I do have a D-Bracket, but my problem is not that the system does not boot or does not post... my system DOES NOT POWER ON (!!!!), so d-bracket is useless!
When I plug the system power    the only thing that happens is that the power led starts blinking (with the system still in soft-off), and if I press the power switch button nothing happens!
I've the bios for 7025 v1.8 and the settings where for OFF on power-loss ond pressing the button (can't rememeber if it was more than 4 sec) was meant to turn off the computer, but considering that I un-powered the pc more than once without the MB battery the settings should be factory default by now.
I went through the Windows-XP shut-down system, and i could not be an electrical problem as I always used the PC with a pretty good UPS unit.
Right now these are the full specs of my sytem:
    - MB MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 Ultra
    - GAINWARD 6800 2600 GLH 256 MB Ram
    - PSU Antec TruPower 550 W
    - CPU AMD64 3500+ core Winchester @11*210 Mhz (this cpu has never overclocked very well)
    - HEATSINK Thermalright XP-90 with a 12 Cm Enermax Fan (CPU temp in always below 55 °C when stressed)
    - 1 x 512 Mb RAM Crucial Ballistix DDR400 optimized for  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
I left only these things inside my computer in the hope that it would turn on... it did not work. I tested each component but the MB, and they work perfectly.
    Again...
Thanks for you efforts, any help will be appreciated.
    Alberto.
All parts have been tested: CPU/RAM/GFX/PSU/HD/DVD,  just not the MOBO ?
Checked if the MOBO is shorting in the case ?
Have you tried using the reset switch as power, on/off switch ?  I've seen before when the power switch stops working (lose/bad wire busted spring) after swapping  reset to power, then the system turned on. Worth a try, as sending it back to USA won't be cheap. If its over 1 year old it mite not be covered by the re-seller and or MSI. Best to check this out as law and warranty is different from country to country.
    Good Luck

  • My Powerbook will not power up, but I can hear the fan running...

Please help!! My Powerbook will not power up, but I can hear the fan running when I press the power button to attempt to power it up. I just received a new power adapter because it wasn't working properly and it was doing this before and then it worked for a week and now it will not power up at all. It just starts the fan but nothing else turns on. When I plug the adapter, with the battery still connected, it will look as if it is charging but then the light on the plug turns from green to orange then off and doesn't power up at all. If I take the battery out and plug in the adapter, the light stays on but it does not power up except for the fan noise. Does anyone have any suggestions? I also followed the two articles listed online in regards to resetting the power setting and the command + alt + P + R as well. Nothing works. Thanks in advance.....

Same here. If I start up with the power adapter attached, it starts up fine. If I try to start up from battery only, the fan comes on, the sleep light comes on but nothing else happens. I tried letting it sit that way for about 15 minutes and nothing changed. I tried attaching the power cord while in this mode and nothing changed. I tried the PMU reset a couple of times but nothing helps.
This computer is just over 1 year old and I have not had any problems with the power cord (3rd party), the battery, or any problem like this before. It started after a proper shutdown last night and attempt to start without the power cord this afternoon.
Any answers to this yet? I think I'll call on this and report any success to this discussion.
