IMac G4 flat panel will not start up

Hi
My imac G4 will not start up when I power up. The fan kicks in but nothing comes on, no chimes, no screen, no noise from the hard drive. I have tried the PMU switch but to no avail.
many thanks

  • IMac G4 Flat Panel Will NOT Mount Leopard Install DVD

I'm trying to install Leopard (MacOS X 10.5) onto a 1 GB 1.25 GHz iMac G4 (flat panel) from an install DVD.
Any ideas why it doesn't mount? After a minute or so and several spins and arm accesses the iMac ejects the DVD. Maybe this is a dual-layer DVD and the old iMac can't read dual layer DVDs?
More important, how can I install Leopard on this old hardware? Can I access the DVD from another Mac set up as a firewire target disk? Can I copy the DVD to a USB/FireWire external hard drive?
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks.

From what source is the Leopard DVD? Retail discs should work fine in your model.
You can install from another Mac that is able to boot a Leopard installer by way of Target Disk Mode. See the following: Installing Tiger without a DVD drive and How To - Installing Tiger Using FireWire Target Disk Mode.
You cannot copy the disc to an external FireWire drive, but you can use the Restore option of Disk Utility to "restore" the DVD to a freshly formatted external FireWire drive. Cannot use a USB drive as they are not bootable on most PPC Macs.

Just rented a movie in French on my iMac... movie will not start after download ?
    What I do now ?

Okay. I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the item, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.

  • Imac 2009 with Mavericks will not start

In can only boot my Imac 27' (end of 2009) in safe mode.
The problem started in Lion, when the computer suddenly froze.
I upgraded (in safe mode) to Mavericks 10.9.2, took away all Launch Agents and Daemon that are not Apple (both in System and User's), done all the permission repairs, reset memory, fsck and turn the plug off the computer. The only thing I was not able to do is the hardware test (for some reason, the command + D to access the internet testing is not working). I have no external devices or cables attached.
My 2TB hard drive is divided in 3 partitions. I have got 2 user accounts.
I have tried a few other tricks from the experts in the discussion boards (including removing all preference files that are non apple, remove all non apple extensions), still no way to start up the computer other than safe boot.
I would like to try and turn off bonjour, as it seems like a MDNSResponder Error. But need a green light from any of you experts.

You have insufficient capacity to use the Time Capsule for backup.  You would need a 4 TB Time Capsule to be able to function properly as one given your internal's capacity.
Get an external hard drive that is 3 TB and use Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper after formatting it HFS Extended Journalled GUID partition and make individual partitions on the external to reflect the sizes of the internal.    Make a fourth external partition to install the operating system onto and the backup software.   Clone each partition at individual times to the same representative partition on the external.
If you need to archive information (i.e. not keep it on your original), burn it to CD, or archive it to USB Flash drive.
Make sure you have at least two copies of your data at all times.
Cloning makes the destination exactly like the original.
If turning off the backup capability of your Time Capsule does not fix the situation, and you are cloned to the external as I described, let us know, and we can isolate other possibilities.

  • IMac froze, and now will not start up properly

I left my iMac for about half an hour, and when I came back, it was completely frozen, and I had to shut it down by pressing the power button. I turned it back on, and this is what happened:
I heard the usual chime, and the grey screen popped up. However, the screen then went black, and then the grey screen popped up again. After a few seconds of solid grey screen, a little icon appeared in the middle of the screen. It looks like a little folder icon, and it alternately flashes the face from the Finder icon and then a question mark over and over.
I tried resetting the SMU and holding the Command-Option-P-R keys before the grey screen pops up, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

This exact same thing just happened to my girlfriend's iMac G5 on July 11th. After taking it to the Apple Store Genius Bar, we were told that it was a hard drive failure. they booted the computer off their external hard drive with some kind of utility program. the iMac's hard drive did not show up as a drive at all. we were told, there was nothing they could do about it. we could go to a hard drive data specialist who could attempt to extract the data on the hard drive but it would cost up to $1000, but even then the chances of getting data back are not guaranteed. we basically need to get a new hard drive.
this is lovely... for a computer that is a year and a half old, you would expect a little more longevity and reliability in it's components. my old 450MHz G4 tower, that's like 8 years old, has never caused me any problems except for being slow in speed. makes me reconsider wanting to replace my old G4 with the next iMac release.
does anyone have any other suggestions and recommendations that won't cost a thousand dollars in recovery services? thanks!

  • IMac G5 (no isight) will not start up.. fsck exited with signal 8

I have a 4-year old iMac G5 running leopard. WIll I was on internet, the computer froze; I shut it down (forced, as nothing else was possible) and when I tried to start up again, it would not boot. I entered the single use mode (apple+s) and run /sbin/fsck -fy and the file was modified. When I repeated, i got the following:
    /dev/rdisk0s3
    root file system
verifying volume when it is mounted with write access
    checking journaled HFS Plus volume
    checking extents overflow file
    checking catalog file
    disk0s3: I/O error
    invalid record count
    (4, 42378)
    volume check failed
dev/rdisk0s3 (hfs) EXITED WITH SIGNAL 8
I tried to run disk utility from install Leopard CD, but is also failed...
    any ideas?
please provide any help as I do not know what to do.
many thanks in advance for your time and help

Your drive directory is sufficiently hosed that neither Disk Utility nor the fsck routine can correct it.
Instead, use DiskWarrior from Alsoft to attempt to rebuild it.

  • Settings (and other Apps) Will Not Start (Metro)

This morning most Modern Apps will not start on my system, including the Settings app. It seems to be a DCOM failure and seems directly related to this old thread.

This is a current Windows 8.1 installation, full up to date on patches, and the problem still occurs after rebooting. I checked for newly installed patches, etc. and the only thing recent was the Windows Defender definitions update.
It's an i7 with 32 GB of RAM, fast SSD's etc. I don't believe this is a hardware problem in any way.

That matches almost exactly with the referenced thread. But that thread never seemed to give a set of steps to resolve the issue (other than doing a Refresh which would be a catastrophic waste of time, reinstalling my whole development environment).
I really would appreciate some help resolving this issue. If I'm in the wrong forum, please move or suggest a more appropriate place.
    Thanks,

  • Mac will no longer turn on - iMac G4 (Flat Panel)

I have an iMac G4 (Flat Panel) that will not turn on. I've tried to obvious things such as changing the power lead/fuse etc., but this hasn't solved it. If you hold the power button in you can hear a faint 'ticking' sound coming from inside the Mac, but it doesn't power up. I'm guessing something more serious has 'blown' inside, but I have no idea whether it's a lost cause, or something that could be easily fixed. Any ideas?

    Hello Matt,
I have the same problem you describe. You may want to try what I did to bring the iMac back on. I just leave it alone for a day, with the power cord disconnected. Then I try my luck by connecting the power cord back and start up again. Some patience is needed here as I am successful only after half a dozen of retries. I also hold the power button until I see the lights on the mouse comes on.
Once ON everything works fine..software restart is not an issue either..just dont shut down..then u may have to to wait another day to try again..I was lucky four times and did this in the past week. ..can be frustrating but lucky i still have the G5 to use.
I dont have the proper solution to the problem and still trying to figure out what is the cause..I have reset the PMU (see apple support website on resetting the PMU) but the problem still remains. Another forum participant suggested to change the internal battery (an inexpensive exercise) but Apple website advice us not to do it and let them do it..but I will likely try to do it myself later.
For the time being, hope you can start up the machine like i did.

  • Can not burn or read dvd/cd's on imac g4 flat panel

    Hello
Just recently I am having a great deal of trouble burning dvd's or cd's. If I manage to get a dvd or cd to burn(which is very rare that I do manage to get them to burn) they will no longer mount on my computer after I have ejected them from the computer. I get the same result wether using toast or the Disk Utility. My local Apple reseller sugested the drive was ok but had a coruption in the software. So I did a full and complete wipe of the system and freshly re-installed teh whole system. I am still getting the same problem.
The error messages I'm getting are "medium error xxxxx" or can not calibrate lazer level.
I have cleaned the dvd drive and I have made sure all disks are clean before using.
So any help would be appreciated.

check out the screen I get when I hold command at startup, what does this mean? none of the keyboard buttons respond to this or the mouse, except the return key which brings me back to the grey screen hanging forever.

  • Can't start up past gray screen on iMac G4 flat panel

My iMac G4 flat panel is messed up right now and I'd appreciate any help I can get here.
This morning after I realized my internet wasn't working I tried a restart but the restart stalled around the part where it just shows your desktop picture and wouldn't fully shut down. I watched this for about ten minutes and then held down the power button on the back to shut down. When I tried starting back up, it would just get to the gray screen with the apple and spinning gear and stall out there. The gear keeps spinning but I can tell from listening that the computer is not doing anything, and it just stays like that for a long time. My OSX disks are in Toronto and I'm here in Kingston, but I was able to start up off my housemate's ibook start up disk and run disk utility. Disk Utility said there was no problems with the disk, I told it to repair anyways and it told me no repairs were needed. However, when I tried to restart off the hard drive, gray screen again.
I know there's been some similar threads here, but I haven't found much help from them. If anyone can give me some advice as to what is making my iMac stall out like this, I'd really appreciate it.

On pressing the Option key during startup,
Mach Hard disk and Recovery Disk 10.9 is displayed.

Choosing the Recovery Disk 10.9 does not boot up Disk Utility, instead I get the grey Apple logo.
    Please help. Thanks.

Your Recovery HD is damaged. You may be able to repair it using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.4. Under the Windowm menu select Disk Center. Select your boot volume from the list. Click on the Recovery HD tab then click on the Create a Recovery volume for this disk. Select Mavericks from the dropdown menu labeled "Recovery HD version to be applied." See if that works. If it does not then see Update - Create Lion RecoveryHD Partition Quickly Without Reinstalling | brunerd. Or see Recovery Partition Creator 3.7 – Updated for Mavericks ...

  • IMac will not start-up, do not have a backup, any way to back it up before erasing the drive?

Our iMac will not start up, it goes to the flashing question mark screen. I have tried the different steps listed at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440, but they have not worked, as it says the disk is not repairable. It says I need to erase the disk and reinstall OS X. However, I do not currently have a back-up of the hard drive, so is there any way I can back it up before erasing and reinstalling, even though the iMac will not start up? Thanks.

I also tried downloading Snow Leopard onto an external hard drive and boot from there, but it just comes up to the choose a language screen everytime.

  • My imac will not start - it is hunged up, when I turn it on I see the apple and the little wheel go around and around and nothing happens - what can I do ???

Hello - can anybody help me - my Imac will not start - When I try to start it I just get to see the apple and the wheel that goes around and around  HELP !!

Restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. How you do this is when you hear the startup tone hold down the Shift Key until you see the progress bar appear. Let it fully boot, then open System Preferences - Startup Disk and ensure your internal HD is selected and then click Restart to test. If you still don't have luck you should run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, you may need to run the test 2-3 times to report any errors. To run AHT you will need teh ORIGINAL Install Discs that shipped with the computer. Instructions for AHT are in:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
    Have you been backiing up?
