IMAC G4 LARGER MONITOR?

I just ordered a Imac G4 15'' monitor. I definitely want a larger screen lol. The 15 was the cheapest so that's why I bought it.
Is it possible to get a larger screen for it? I would prefer 20 or larger if possible. Where's the best place to look and is it easy to install as is with a pc?
Thanks.
This is my first mac.

Unfortunately, the only way to "upgrade" the LCD on an older iMac G4 is to purchase another iMac of this type. There were two other versions that Apple manufactured.
A 17" LCD model and 20 " LCD model. The screens are part of the entire unit.
iMacs are considered all-in-one type computers systems.
You cannot swap LCD panels between these models and there is no way to attach a larger, secondary
external LCD panel for use.
Sorry.

  • Considering using 20" Imac with larger external monitor - good idea?

I've just returned my 24" Imac for a refund due to the uneven brightness issue. I want a set up for my illustration work, but can't justify the price of a mac pro + monitor. Therefore I'm considering a 20" Imac 2.4 GHZ, and connecting an external 23/24" monitor that has better consistent brightness than the Imac screens, e.g. the Dell 2407WFP-HC or an 23" Apple cinema display. The idea is that, any problems with gradients on the Imac screen won't bother me as I'll be using it merely as a web browser.
Is this a good idea? Will there be any problems running a larger monitor of the Imac - any compatibility issues etc. Can anyone recommend a good screen around the £500 mark or under? I basically want a screen that isn't obviously brighter on one side than the other, as the Imac appears to be.

I know uneven lighting is a complaint among 24" iMac users - and I've seen two myself. But not all of them have the problem. You might want to consider trying another before giving up on them. Having said that - take a look at Samsung displays. I don't know what they run in the UK but I'm very impressed with the ones we have at work.

  • What larger monitors work with the 15" vga G4 iMac

What larger monitors work with the 15" vga G4 iMac?

It is not so much how large but rather a question of resolution and how it would look on a larger monitor than the original.
All iMac G4 15-inchers supported: 640x480; 800x600; and 1024x768 at a fixed 4:3 ratio--no provision for widescreen. The old rule of thumb for decent clarity for 4:3 ratio CRT monitors was:
    15-inch monitor supports 640x480
    17-inch supports 800-x600
    19 to 20 inch supports 1024x768
I believe you would find the same issues with an older 4:3 flat-panel monitor.
Also the iMacs can only mirror the resolution set on the built-in monitor so you can't have the external one set differently nor use it for extended desktop. If you set the built-in to 640x480 (would look nice at 15 inches) you are going to get 640x480 on the external regardless of how big it is. On a 19-20 incher, 640x480 could start to look pixelated.

  • Imac and ipad 2?? or laptop and larger monitor?

I am planning to get a new computer (currently using a 6yr old imac PPC and an old 15" TPB, both running quite happily but unable to do some things I want ;-)  I am leaning towards a 21.5 imac and an ipad2.  The imac will obviously be my major work center for photo editing, quicken (which I know is an issue with Lion) documents, etc.
I have a few questions, and if in the end, I need to cut this email up and post in more than one place, I will.  But I thought I'd start here.
Currently I am using Microsoft office but considering going with pages and numbers.  I've heard Apple has improved how well they 'play' with microsoft documents so I hope that is true.  I live in Seattle so supporting Microsoft, a major employer in my area, is something I am ok with, to some degree, but I like the idea of using a native program with a new computer IF it works well.  This may be better in another forum, if so, just let me know.
I am wondering if anyone has this set up, the imac and the ipad for mobility and if so, are you happy with it?  I've played with the ipad in the store many times but that isn't the same as sitting on your couch or going to the library or coffee house (I said I live in Seattle ;-)  and using it.  Are they any things you find that you wish it did?
The other idea is getting a powerbook and a 2nd larger monitor so I can move the powerbook around.  But I know of a few people who get tired of unplugging the laptop so they don't move it as much as they thought they would.
The imac - ipad set up seems like it gives me good options, but I wanted to check in here to see what other users might say?  Maybe this should get posted in the ipad forum.. but then I might be told to post here, as I ask about the imac.  LOL
So thanks for any thoughts you can give me and gentle directions if there is a better way to ask my related questions to different aspects of my planned purchase.

    1) I use iWork for about 90% of my work and it is true that Office and iWork are compatible but that doesn't mean they are identical. The biggest problem is with lost formatting between Word and Pages documents and some incompatibilities between PowerPoint and KeyNote. If you do a good deal of sharing Office files with colleagues/friends then you may want to keep Office around - especially if your files aren't of the 'plain vanilla' variety.
    2) I have an iMac (aging 24"), a newish 13" MBP, and an iPad 2. That iMac will probably be the last desktop I own. I use my MBP more than the iMac and with an external display, keyboard and mouse it is just as usable. There are times when sitting in a chair or on the couch with the notebook works just fine and there are other times when a desk works better. At a desk, at least for me, the display and keyboard aren't at the right height for comfort so I have no problem with plugging in the external display. The mouse and keyboard being BT just need to wake up.
    3) Now for the hard/controversial part. Could you use an iPad instead of a notebook for mobility. For me the answer is a firm maybe . It is great for surfing, reading email, checking the news and so forth. I find the virtual keyboard so/so for writing. I'll answer a couple emails and take some notes with it. I'm not going to write a report with it. If I were answer your question with the iPad my answer would be much shorter. However, I have taken it instead of my MBP on a couple short business trips. It and a BT keyboard worked great at the hotel and it certainly was more convenient to lug around than the MBP. This is one of those YMMV things and you probably won't know the answer until you've bought the iPad and tried it.

  • IMac as external monitor questions

I have an HP 6930p laptop from work and would like to connect my new 27" iMac to it to use as a larger monitor. The HP only has a VGA port, so I was hoping to find out if it's possible to connect this somehow to the iMac?? I didn't know if this could really be done with adapters, etc.
One other question: I know you can use the iMac as an external monitor for a MacBook laptop, but will this also work if you're running a PC operating system via VM-Ware on the MacBook??
    Thanks so much

You can only use your 27" iMac for a device with DisplayPort output. To use your Windows laptop with VGA output you would need to find a 3rd party adapter specially designed to convert the VGA output to DisplayPort output. Then you would need a cable that went from the adapter to the iMac that has a mini-DisplayPort connector on the iMac's end.
As long as the MacBook has a DisplayPort there should be no issue with Windows on a virtual machine. You just need a cable with the correct connectors when it is DisplayPort to DisplayPort.

  • Old Aquablue G3 iMac as a monitor?

Folks, I'm as dumb as a box of rocks, never more so than when it comes to computers. That established, I recently bought a Mac mini and hoped to use my old G3 iMac as a monitor. The 'poser' at Compuserve sent me home with all manner of expensive cables and adapters and thought, "in theory", that it could be done. Can it? If so, what do I need?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rick

Well theoretically this would be possible and it really depends on which iMac we're talking about.
On the iMac tray loader CPU speeds 233-333 the video comes out of the back of the mass store/logic sled. It's the old Mac standard connector and to make this work you'd need to feed the male plug that plugs into that sled. So you'd need a VGA to Mac female adapter. I actually think I have one of those. That would be easy to make work.
Now for the iMac Slot loaders CPU 350 - 700 that would be a much bigger problem. You could probably make it work but it would require extensive disassembly of the iMac. The feed to the video section of the iMac comes off the back of the logic board from underneath and feeds RGB Cable 992-4034 which is normally screwed to the divider panel. So to make that work a special cable would have to be made up. So probably not worth the trouble.
I'd just look for a regular VGA monitor. Around here Apple Studio monitors and the old large CRTs are going for nothing and even first generation LCD monitors are going for very cheap. That would be a great way to go. Otherwise go out and buy a Apple Cinema monitor like the 20" and really go in style.

  • Hello MacBook Pro Musicians- I cannot read sheet music from the ipad. It is too small. I want to connect a large monitor, hopefully wirelessly to my 13 inch macbook pro. what would I need to connect ? Any suggestions on how to keep monitor from falling?

Hello Macbook Pro Musicians--I cannot read sheet music from my 13" macbook or from an IPad. The print is too small for these aging eyes! So I need to get a large monitor to attach to the Macbook.  I want the monitor to be connected wirelessly or using a blue tooth.  This will eliminate alot of potential mishaps
when playing out.  Also I am having a time figuring out how I am going to safely keep the monitor on somekind of music stand without falling!!!  Can anyone help me with this?

    Hi Julius,
As you can see in my profile section, my MBP is older by 5 years, 2GB RAM and with regards to question 1 (Q1), has no problems with having all those programs open at the same time with the possible exception of Photoshop since I use Gimp instead. With twice the RAM and much overall much better specs, Photoshop shouldn't be an issue. But you listed some other activities that might need that additional RAM. But the advise most give is to not get it from Apple but from a third party.
Q5 - I always get Apple Care. Only had to use it once but it paid for itself that one time.
Sorry, can't help you much with the questions you really want answered since I won't have a new MBP until (hopefully) next week but for Q4, I believe it depends on the peripheral. My current monitors are too old to allow them to be hooked up in a chain. Supposedly, if the monitors do have the ports, you could via the MBP Thunderbolt port. The speeds are also dependent upon the peripheral. If the external hard drive is using a USB 2 port, you are limited by that speed (480 Mb/s). If it has a Thunderbolt port, then from what I understand, we, my friend, are in for some great times because I believe your RAM will have the ability to access data as fast as it can take it at 10Gb/s (and if will need those kinds of speeds, the 8GB of RAM may be the way to go). The Thunderbolt demos on YouTube where they are accessing four video files from a Raid drive, then sending them back out via Final Cut Pro to a monitor are amazing. I'll probably never push this machine to anywhere near it's limits but I can't wait to see what others do.
    Peace,
    Jeremiah

  • Can i use my imac as second monitor for my  pc / notebook

Can i use my imac as second monitor for my  pc / notebook

Without any knowledge of the year machines you have it's impossible to answer that question. iMacs adn MBA's have been around for many years now so we have no idea of the exact specs your machine have. Remember when posting you need to be complete and paint a picture for us as we aren't there to look for ourselves. Your question should be  posted something like:
" I have a 2011 27" iMac and a 2009 MacBook Air, can I use the iMac as an external display for my MacBook Air?"
BTW what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode. Apple does support that on some 2009-2011 iMacs. You can find additional information at:

  • IMac as a monitor for iPad photographs.

Is it possible to use my iMac as a monitor to share my iPad screen when scrolling through photographs? This is my plan for classroom use.

This is from the iPad User Manual.  So I think if you purchase an Apple Digital AV adapter cable, you'll be in business.
When you connect iPad to a TV or projector using a USB cable, the attached display automatically mirrors the iPad screen. Some apps may support using the attached display as a second monitor. Check the app’s settings and documentation.
To view HD videos in high resolution, use the Apple Digital AV Adapter or a component video cable.
Make sure the video cable is firmly connected at both ends, and that it’s a supported cable. If iPad is connected to an A/V switchbox or receiver, try connecting it directly to the TV or projector instead.
Make sure that your TV has the proper video input selected, such as HDMI or component video.
If no video appears, press the Home button, disconnect and reconnect the cable, and try again.

I would like to use my 6 year old Imac as a monitor for my 1 yr old MacBook Pro.  Any suggestions as to how to hook this up?

No.  I think it was about 2009 that iMacs could be run in target display mode but not earlier.

As tintinlad says there are software solutions that use VNC connections (link). Hardware solutions exisit but only at Standard Definition TV quality.

  • IMac Display as Monitor for PC

I have an iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, OS X 10.6.2 and an old Dell Pentium III 933 MHz which I would love to somehow connect together. I am considering to install Linux on my Dell and use both computers for different reasons. I wonder if I would be able to use my iMac like a monitor for the old PC.
I have come across the following discussions but it seems that they don't cover my case, i.e., an old Dell that does not have a port for a display port.

--but the basic problem is that you need a DisplayPort signal to drive the iMac monitor. You can convert a digital DVI output (or HDMI which is the same thing with audio and a different physical connector) to DP format with an expensive converter, but there is no way to convert an analog VGA signal to DP format. The cheaper but more complicated solution for a PC with DVI output, and the only solution for one with VGA output, is to replace your video card with a DisplayPort or Mini-DisplayPort card. Mini-DisplayPort has the same signal but a smaller physical connector.
This was not actually Apple being arbitrary: DisplayPort is more efficient and less expensive than DVI/HDMI because it dispenses with a lot of the conversion hardware needed for that format. Therefore Apple couldn't provide DVI/HDMI compatibility without increasing the iMac cost substantially.

  • Use older 2008 iMac as second monitor for new iMac

    Hi all,
I have one of these older machines that has no real purpose
      http://support.apple.com/kb/sp485
but would serve me very well as a second monitor for my brand spanking new iMac.
The specs seem to note that there is a video output - but I'm not seeing anything about video IN.
Is it possible to use this older iMac as a monitor?

that looks cool, and there is a free trial.
I am not keen on using the WiFi to do this - my old iMac has firewire but the new one doesn't.
Besides using the ludicrously expensive Thunderbolt <-> Firewire 800 convertor
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD464ZM/A/thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapter
is there any other way to create a wired connection between these devices? I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a USB <-> USB network connection.
