IMac g4 not reading external HDD

hi everyone;
I have an imac g4 700mhz sitting around the house i was going to use just for itunes, it is running tiger, i have an external hdd from a pc with all my music on it, when i plug the drive into the imac, the drive is not found, i looked in disk utility and there is nothing there.
I've also tried all the USB slots on the mac, the drive gets power from the usb port, but osx isn't recognizing the drive.
Drive model number: Western Digital WDBABM7500ABK-00 running osx tiger 10.4.11
thoughts?
Cheers,

Please permit me to disagree: drives formatted by PCs using the FAT32 system can be read & written-to by Macs but if formatted using NTFS can only be read.
Given that you have a 700MHz iMac, it has USB1.1 ports which I suspect aren't providing sufficent power for the device to be recognized.  The port immediately adjacent to the modem port gives little better supply as the other two share power.  Do you have a power supply for the external or perhaps the drive came with a USB cable with three plugs on it like the one below?
kind regards

    Hello there ZamirasDAD,
I was looking through our aricles about what you may be experiencing and recommend resetting your SMC and your PRAM.
To reset your SMC on an iMac you would use this article Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
To reset the PRAM use this article named About NVRAM and PRAM found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • My 24" imac will not read cd's, reads dvd's fine

My 24" imac will not read cd's, reads dvd's just fine.

    1) Make sure the CDs are clean and free from scratches.
    2) Go to: Apple > System Preferences > CDs & DVDs and make sure that blank CD: is set to Ask what to do and that music CD: is set to Open iTunes.

No need to worry about the disk version. You would just have to install an update anyway as soon as it was installed. Download from the link provided below and use the serial number you have to activate.

  • Imac does not detect external vga display

Please help with connecting external vga display to an imac 21.5'', late 2012, OS X 10.8.5 via Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter.
I have connected an external monitor (Fujitsu Siemens) to the thunderbolt port of the imac using a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter. The imac does not detect the external monitor. I have followed all instructions and suggestions I could find at Apple Support Communities without success.
The monitor is in perfectly good working order as it has no problem connecting and performing flawlessly with a dell windows laptop. The imac, connected via the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter to the D-Sub connector of a Samsung smart TV, also worked perfectly.
To add insult to injury, occasionally, when restarting the iMac with the external vga display connected and powered on, the iMac screen starts intermittently turning blue for a brief second or so and resuming back to normal. The frequency of 'blueing' is once in 2-3 seconds. This particular rather disturbing problem, luckily ceases when the external display is switched off.
Any advice and help with resolving the above connection problems will be gratefully appreciated.
    Thank you

  • Macbook Pro (Q3 2012) not reading toshiba HDD 1TB

    Hi,
I have the latest Macbook Pro 13" retina, and have a toshiba 1 TB hard drive. Earlier today, seemed to randomly eject itself, and now whenever I plug it back it in, it's not shown in the devices part of finder or on my desktop (all my HDD are shown there as well). Any help would be much appreciated, a lot of my important stuff is on this drive.
    Thanks
    M Cooke

Is this external HDD USB powered? If it is are you using a Y USB cable that connect to 2 USB ports? If not that is what you need to do.
Most all Mac notebooks do not put out enough power on any one USB port to fully power some of the USB powered external drives, Mostly on the larger GB/TB model drives. Also as the drive fills with data the drive has to work harder to access that data drawing more power from the USB port.
So if you don't have a Y USB cable run down to your local electronics store and buy one.
Then also do a SMC reset before you try to connect that drive even with the Y USB cable.

  • New external hard drive froze while transferring info to new computer. Laptop does not read external hard drive. Went to Apple store and didn't work. Any suggestions?

Day 1. Went to Apple store because iMovie was not working. It kept shutting down. Prior to going to the store, I called Apple Support and deleted and reinstalled iMovie. Still did not work. Then I went to the Apple Store. After an hour it finally worked but when I got home, it didn't work AND my iPhoto application was missing. Tried to back up on external hard drive but it didnt work.
Day 2. Explained the situation again to Apple employee at Apple Store. I bought an external hard drive that employee recommended and picked out. I went home and backed up my computer on the external HD.
Day 3 (morning). Went back to Apple. Employee verified that my hard drive was backed up successfully. All my photos, music, and documents were successfully backed up. He was going to reinstall the operating system. He did that successfully. He showed me how to install the external HD info to the laptop. I went home and followed the directions. It was going to take about 2 hours. I kept monitoring the progress and everything looked good until....30 minutes remained. 30 minutes remained for a good 20 minutes. The ext hard drive stopped responding. I tried to canel but there were no buttons to push. I exited the program. I called apple support and they tried to walk me through it. My computer still was not recognizing that the exteranl HD was plugged in. I mad another trip to the Apple store and the emplyee confirmed that the extranal HD was not reading. He tried plugging it in to his computer and it still wasnt reading.
He did give me a data recovery number to call. I asked if Apple would cover the cost and he said no. I called then and was quoted $700-$2000 to recover the data.
Does anyone have any suggestions? When frustrates me more is that I followed every instruction and I did exactly what Apple told me to do. Now, ALL of my data is lost and Apple does not want to help.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do next? I need help. =*(

    Hi rkaufmann--
Thanks for the response.  I can say with confidence that that is not the issue.  I have at least 8 of these same WD external portable drives that are powered through their USB 3.0 cables, and I have never had problems with any of them.  Sometimes I connect them directly to my computer, and sometimes I use a powered hub.  Either way they work fine.  The drives with their own power source do not suit my needs.
My question is specifically whether anyone has seen an issue where sometimes they plug a drive in and it is not recognized but then it continues to work.  In other words, the question I'm posing to other users is whether it sometimes happens that they connect a drive and it simply doesn't show up, but then they disconnect and reconnect and it goes on working fine as it should.

  • Bootcamp trouble and iMac will not read DVD-R with Windows

    Hi,
I have a late 2011(or maybe early 2012) imac that came with OS X Lion but it's been upgraded to Mountain Lion.. I'd like to bootcamp it and install Windows 8.
I've been trying this for a long time now and then i discovered my imac was not bootable with a usb drive.. Bootcamp restarts and then there is a black which says 'bootable disk not found. insert and press any button' (something like that)... So... i dicided to try with a burned windows 8 dvd-r but when i burn an image to it in disk utility, it says 'medium write error' and the disk pops out... I already have all the windows drivers downloaded.... This is supposed to be a problem with the operating system... As you guys can see, i am having a lot of problems..
    Any solutions?
    Thanks in advance!

I tried using Finder to open files but as they are greyed out this would not work.
That sounds very strange - like it's a disk format issue.
What is the disk format of the Sony DVD+R you are using? (Do a 'Get Info' when the disc is mounted on your Desktop.)

  • Right USB Port not reading External HD

I'm using Mid 2014, Retina, 13-inch, Macbook Pro. I noticed that my right USB Port is not reading my 1 TB WD External HD but able to use mouse. How to fix it?

According to the fount of knowledge that is Wikipedia…
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB
As with previous USB versions, USB 3.0 ports come in low-power and high-power variants, providing 150 mA and 900 mA respectively, while simultaneously transmitting data at SuperSpeed rates.[25] Additionally, there is a Battery Charging Specification (Version 1.2 – December 2010), which increases the power handling capability to 1.5 A but does not allow concurrent data transmission.
It doesn't make sense to me that a 'low power' USB port would output 500ma unless it was working in USB2 mode.
A unit load is defined as 100 mA in USB 1.x and 2.0, and 150 mA in USB 3.0. A device may draw a maximum of five unit loads (500 mA) from a port in USB 1.x and 2.0, or six unit loads (900 mA) in USB 3.0.
You may want to get the genius to confirm the spec for both ports if you go along to a store, I guess they may have limitations.
I would also boot into recovery mode just to see if the disk pops up in Disk Utility via both ports - that could indicate the port is being rendered useless by the OS.
Apologies, you appear to have tried that already.

  • Imac will not read a cd rom and I cant eject it!!!!! Help please

I have bought yesterday a new imac 24 inch with snow leopard. I was loading my music and pictures so I inserted a cd in the drive. The icon does not appear on the desktop so I can not open it or drag it in the recycle bin. I have tried to use the eject button on the keyboard and that does not work. I tried all other suggestion on this discussion board:
I put it to sleep and then woken it up with the eject button. Did not work.
I Logged out user and tried eject button. Did not work.
I tried to restart keeping the mouse button down but I got a blue screen with the spinning wheel for ages.
Now the imac will not shut down anymore unless I push the on/off button for few swconds (if I try through the apple menu I get the blue screen for ages with the spinning wheel).
I went on the disk utility in applications and tried to eject from there. I get a message that says I should close the programmes that are using the disc.... but there aren't any as far as I can see.... Any ideas????? Thanks

I posted this twice in error and the issue was resolved thatnks to advice in the other post.

  • Backup from (not to) External HDD

Searched the forums and googled and seen plenty of information on backing up to an external HDD attached to a TC but can't seem to find out if you can back up an external HDD attached to a MacBook to a TC.
My MacBook has a 160GB internal drive but is overflowing with RAW files so using an external HDD (also 160GB) to supplement. If I buy a 500GB TC will time-machine backup both of these to it? Or will it only back up the internal drive and I will still need to buy another external HDD to back up the existing one?
Thanks in advance for any help....

  • My iMac does not recognize external hard drive

My iMac does not recognize my external hard drive.  Disk utility recognizes it and a test of the hard drive does not review any error.  I use the hard drive as a back up for the time machine.  This problem comes and goes.  It comes when I turn off and turn on the computer, with the hard drive attached.
    Please help.
    Insightful

    can be this reasons
01 , you have problem with connection ? check the port if you can find any problems physically .
    02. if not try to change the cable and with connection ,
    03. may be its good idea  to check the hard drive with another mac ?(if you have )
Did you note any diference of sound  from Hard Drive ? listen to it that carefully to note some unusual sound comes when the hard drive works.

  • Smart folder not searching external HDD connected to Airport Extreme

I have bunch of movie files (mp4 format) on external HDD connected to the new Airport Extreme station. When I create a smart folder on either one of the machines on my local network, the smart folder would not search at all through the HDD connected to the Airport Extreme.
I have another HDD connected directly to my PowerMacG5Quad and smart folders successfuly searches through that drive.
However, when I ask for any type of search (i.e. any kind of files) located on a networked external HDD, smart folders acts is if the networked drive is not even there.
Obviously, my purpose here is to have the difference machines access (RSS style) all the movies files located on the networked HDD.
Is it some permission in Airport Extreme?

    Does this help?
