IMac G4 screen remains dark

my 17' G4 iMac USB 2.0 (10.4.11) screen froze and the following messages appeared:
"System failure: cpu 0 00000008 unaligned stack"
as well as lots of the following lines:
"Unresolved kernel trap (cpu 0) 0x600 Alignment DAR" etc
Had to shut it down by using power switch. Pulled out all cables except for mouse + keyboard.
I can start it - but there is no start-up chime and screen remains black.
Tried safe boot, no response. Tried to open drive door during start up for putting in hardware test disc (mouse held down), door won't open.
Tried PRAM, no response. Tried PMU reset, no change.
Removed extra RAM I had fitted years ago and tried to start it. After I did that the iMac responds
with a 4 x beep morse code signal after turning it back on, but screen remains dark.
Also tried to start in target mode, but other 27' iMac does not "see" G4 iMac.
Anyone has any thoughts ? Don't want to get rid of this machine, I love the design.
Thanks
Walter

There is some likelihood of a hardware failure, to include
perhaps, the logic board; some kernel panic issues on an
iMac G4 could point to such an event.
Not certain if checking out such a machine at that stage is
possible with the original Apple Hardware Test, since that
relies on viewing evidence of the results in said computer.

While it may not be a major melt-down, you could be in for
a project at some point in the future if you start looking into
finding other similar iMac G4s (they are getting scarce) to
use either for parts or as spares should their needs go there.
I have two running iMac G4 1.25GHz 17" & one in-op for parts.
A skilled and willing computer shop tech could probably
test the computer further, but some shops would rather
you buy something newer from their retail store. In some
cases, you may be able to get a working iMac G4 17" 1.25
for a few hundred dollars; if lucky, one in fine shape.
Perhaps one of the techie folks who frequent these forums will
see your post & offer their insights, based on experience.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • IPhone screen remains dark

My iPhone 4 will not display the home screen or anything else.
The screen will appear to be black with a hint of grey when you press the on/off button.
The iPhone will not power down by holding down the on/off button nor simultaneously holding down the on/off and home button.
The snooze alarm is constantly going off every 15 minutes. I'm only able to press the on/off button to snooze it for the time being.
I tried charging the phone and plugging it into my Mac Book however the screen remains dark.
    What can I do?

have you tried restoring your phone in iTunes. You can just plug it into the computer make sure you have a back up. After you back up hit restore and see if that helps. If you don't make a back up you will lose all your data because the restore will erase every thing

  • IMac g5 screen remains black when turning on

My iMac 2.0 gz ppc g5 froze up while net surfing. I turned off power strip and when I turned computer back on all I hear is the fan running, the power white light is on but the screen remains black. Am I in some weird sleep mode? Or worse? I' m running 10.5.8

    Try rebooting in Safe mode:
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
       1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
       2. Press the power button.
       3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
       4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

  • Nano works great BUT screen remains Dark?

Everything works great, music transfers, playing BUT my screen remains very dark (but just light enough to see all the menu's and songs!). Messing with the backlight setting has no effect. Am I missing something or is it damaged?
I've updated the software and also used the restore feature but nothing can get it back. It's a 4G colour nano.
    Any ideas?

also - i connected my digital camera straight to the monitor via USB and it doesn't display. I've never tried that before with my camera, but it seems like if the monitor is powered on, connecting it to the camera would cause the pictures stored in the camera to show up on the display.

  • My MacBook won't turn on. When I try, it makes electronic tones and the screen remains dark. What do I do?

This morning I found my MacBook screen was dark, no response. The power light was on, it's been plugged in and that seems to be working. I powered it down and when I hit power to turn it back on it made an electronic pattern of tones.  After that...nothing. Dark screen, power light on. I'd love some advice.

    Try this.
    Erase and Reinstall OS X
Note: This will delete all data on the disk. Back up important files before continuing.
Erasing and then reinstalling OS X can give you a fresh start, making your computer exactly as it was whenever you received it from Apple. This can solve various problems such as corrupt system files.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
Press the Power Button to turn on the computer.
Press and hold both the R and Command (⌘) keys on the keyboard until the Recovery partition loads.
Select Disk Utility and then choose Continue.
Select your startup disk (Macintosh HD by default) from the left.
    Select the Erase tab.
Choose the Format pop-up menu and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled), enter a name for your disk, and then click Erase.
After the disk is erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
Select Reinstall OS X and then choose Continue.
    Follow the instructions.
I hope I solved your question.

  • IMac 27¨ screen gets darker

    Hello,
I have an iMac 27 bought in 2011. My screen flickers sometime and I know that it's known issue but also my screen is like dusty from some points. I added a photo of right side of the screen. What can I do with that?
    http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/8830/qqka.jpg

Too bad, well run I'd recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode at least 2-3 times in succession. If errors appear then you have confirmed a hardware fault and the machine needs to be taken in for repair.
Out of curiosity why did you buy it in the US and what country do you live in? I have seen (as recently as yesterday) a user buy a machine in the US to try and save money, then take it to another country (Brazil) where Apple does not have an Apple Store. That user now has a repair issue and must deal with a reseller he did not buy the machine from.IMHO not a good way to begin a business relationship.

  • Mid 2011 iMac 27" screen half dark

    Hey there,
Anyone recognise this problem? iMac is only 2 months old and it appears as if the LED lighting has died on half the screen or something.
Any help or idea would be appreciated before I lug this thing down to a store.

How much does this cost to get it fixed?  Apparently my warrenty just ran out this month and even though i thought i got Apple Care when i leased my machine, i was mistaken.
Contact Apple's Express Lane, and plead your case. 27" iMac displays run over $500 USD.

  • Dark screen remains after waking from sleep mode

Whilst using Safari Version 3.1.2, Mac OS 10.4.11 on my Powerbook G4 (aluminum, 1.5 ghz), my screen remains dark upon waking from sleep mode. Trying to increase screen brightness is ineffectual for some reason likely related to this problem. My only workaround is to force shutdown and restart. Any ideas about a solution would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Gary,
This behavior is not a Safari issue but system related.
Close all applications an run in utilities> disc repair permissions.
After you done reboot an see what happens when your Mac gets to sleep mode again. This time don't open any applications to test it. Just leave it showing your desktop.

  • IMac G3 Screen/Mouse Malfunction

Hi, I just got an old iMac G3 and plugged it in to troubleshoot. The computer booted just fine and I connected my mouse/keyboard to it (from an iMac G5) it seemed to work perfectly however after just a few minutes the mouse stopped moving and I restarted the computer to get the mouse working. Again the computer booted but the screen never showed anything it was just blank. I think the computer if fine, it gives the start-up sound and the fans/hard drive sound like they are spinning, but the screen remains dark. Would anyone possible know what is causing this and what to focus on fixing? Thank you!!

If the computer has been off wall power for more than a couple of hours, the internal backup battery is likely dead. The reset from the keyboard that kktizzy mentions can be diagnostic for a dead battery; if teh computer restats properly after the reset, the battery was likely the problem
    The batteryis this one:
3.6v Newer Technology Lithium 1/2 AA PRAM Computer Clock Battery
and is user-serviceable. They are cheap online but, if you need one now and have a Radio Shack (Tandy) store locally, they have the proper battery as their part number 23-026. However it will cost4 to 5X the online price.
If your iMac is has a tray-loading optical drive, teh instructions ar ein teh orignal manual:
iMac G3 (Original) Installation Guide (Manual) - Apple
If it has a slot-loading optical drive, you can access the battery through the RAM door on teh bottom of the case. You may need so type of non-conductive tweezers/forceps to reach it.
Regardless of your iMac version, the battery shoud lest 3-5 years if the comptuer remains connected to power Without power, the battery life can drop to months.

  • TS3474 My nano will not power on when fully charged, screen remains black.

Bought early 2012, no idea what generation it is. When connected to the stereo, the screen illuminates and nano works with stereo controls. When I try to take the nano for a run, when holding the power button down the screen remains black and no amount of touching the screen will produce an image or any sound. Any ideas about troubleshooting the black screen when powering up un-connected?

    Hello gatormother,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information, take a look at:
iPod nano (7th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4433
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting it while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least six seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • Pismoscreen remains dark after start  - please help

My pismo screen remains dark after starting the computer, I just controlled the electrical connections as previous described in the forum but with no results.
Starting by cd has no effects - the screen remains dark, but the computer is visible as volume in the network .
As my powerbook has the same default after an expensive repair by apple 1 year ago (they did´nt even tell me what was going wrong) , I would like to know what could be the reason of the malfunction and if there is a possibility to fix the problem by myself.
    regards
    zacambo

    Cacker,
I would certainly give the microprocessor card a shot as described in an earlier reply.
When the 'book is running, can you move the display from almost closed to fully opened (almost 180º) and cause the backlight to light up? If so, you have a loose connection or damaged wires where they pass through the hinges/clutches.
You will want to lift off the keyboard and heat shield and check the inverter/backlight connections on the logic board.
Since you can see data, one inexpensive repair is replacing the inverter board ($10-15); this powers the fluorescent backlight and is very easy to replace. See this link for the inverter and cables.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/6.12.10.html
Note: You do NOT have to remove all the items as shown in this guide. To replace the inverter, remove all power > keyboard (don't disconnect - just lay it on the palm rest upside down) > heat shield > clutch cover.
    Here is the full guide:

  • MacBook screen stays dark during boot up

When I start up my MacBook, the screen will periodically not light up. I can hear the harddrive spinning, but the screen remains dark. Any ideas?

Those times when it does that, if you hold the screen under strong light, can you see a faint image of the normal OS X desktop? That would be a clue about if the graphics is the failure point or if the LCD's backlight is acting up.
