IMac G5 17 inch 2 GHz Ambient Light won't sleep or "wake".

I've read through and implemented procedures indicated in this forum including:
repair permissions
reset SMU
reset PRAM
run and passsed h/w tests on Install CD
to no avail. The machine has only an Apple USB keyboard hanging off it, no other hardwired peripherals. The mouse is a wireless Apple mighty mouse.
Symptoms:
The machine does not respond to apple-sleep, it just continues to be 'awake' and run.
If left alone, the screen saver starts up per schedule. If left alone futher, the energy saver sleep timer kicks in and the machine goes dormant. No heartbeat and it will not wake from this state.
I took to the local apple service shop and they reinstalled the OS and ran the h/w tests with clean results. Still not sleeping/waking.
Any advice appreciated.

Can you put the comp to sleep using the Remote?
Check your Energy Saver settings. I note you make no mention of having checked.
Try this (if not already the same):
Change the energy saving options, to put the display to sleep and the computer to sleep at the same time.
Enable (check mark) put the hard disk to sleep when possible.
Lock the padlock.
Optional: Repair permissions &/or restart.

"The mouse is a wireless"
I wonder if the problem is w/your wireless mouse? Have you tried a non-wireless mouse?

  • Macbook Pro late 2008 17inch won't sleep or wake up

Recently I inset a SSD as a primary disk for the system and the original hard drive for storage. The system was upgraded to Marvericks 10.9.2. The computer is Macbook Pro 17 inches Late 2008 edition, A1229.
When I close the lid, the computer won't sleep. I tried to close lid under safe mode. It works fine. However, even if all the programs are closed, the computer won't sleep when the lid is closed. I tried to change the settings for power saver and bluetooth. It doesn't help.
There are so many people experiencing the same problem. I can't believe there is still no solution. PLEASE HELP.

I have tried to imput "pmset -g" in the terminal. The output was

  • IMac 2009 (21 inch) making hard drive noises during sleep mode - normal??

    Hi there guys,
I have an iMac 21 inch (2009) , 3ghz C2D, 4GB Ram, 1TB hard drive (the hard drive was upgraded straight thru apple, when i bought it i paid extra for a 1tb hard drive, its not a DIY hard drive upgrade)
aniways, I recently noticed that during sleep mode, occasionally (not all the time) I can hear some faint clicking / hard drive noise, which is really weird because i put the imac in sleep mode and it really shouldnt be doing that no?
My 13 inch macbook pro 2010 never does this in sleep mode, its always dead silent
Im just wondering if this hard drive accessing / clicking noise during sleep mode is normal in imacs??

Im just wondering if this hard drive accessing / clicking noise during sleep mode is normal in imacs?
No it should not be doing anything but sleeping. The SMC controls sleep, try resetting it.
    Reset the SMC
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Detach the computer's power cord.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Reattach the computers power cable.
    • Turn on the computer.

  • Dual 1 GHz PPC G4 won't sleep

Over the past week, my G4 has stopped going to sleep both by the timer, from the Apple menu and when I'm logged out. When the timer's selected, it just doesn't do anything. When I try to sleep it from the Apple menu, I get the spinning color wheel and have to restart with the power button. Trying it in log out mode doesn't do anything except make it so I can't log in again and have to restart with the power button.
My ability to fix computer problems goes about as far as /sbin/fsck -fy, but that hasn't helped. I tried checking out this, but couldn't find anything that seemed to work: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
    Any ideas?

Hey, fellas, thanks for responding. I do want to clarify that I told you wrong when I said I was getting the color wheel when trying to sleep the machine from the Apple menu. Rather, the monitor goes black, but the computer is obviously still running--when I press the volume change buttons on the keyboard, I can hear it clicking.
    No recent hardware/software changes.
I tried resetting the PMU to no avail.
I ran the hardware test CD and got an error code "fire/3/20" on the logic board. I looked it up and found this thread suggesting I reset my PRAM and NVRAM, which I did. Ran the hardware test CD again and got the same error. Is my logic board effed? Should I be backing up all my files right now?
How would I check the battery voltage?

  • Macbook won't sleep or wake on command, overheats

I seem to have a sleeping and overheating problem with my 13" aluminum late-2008 edition 13" MacBook (I bought it exactly 4 years ago).
When I put my computer into sleep mode, be it by shutting the lid or selecting the sleep mode, it doesn't seem to stay asleep for long. I'll hear it running, it'll get extremely hot (whether or not the fans turn on seems to be a crapshoot). If I let it sleep longer than a couple minutes, the battery will run out, completely. Half the time when I turn the computer back on after plugging it back in, it doesn't respond right away and I'll have to force a reboot.
Other than sleep and possibly fan issues, the computer is running fine. No other complaints. Already took the battery out and reset the SMC. Not convinced that did anything worthwhile.
    Help?

    Hi there kbuckle!
I have an article for you that can help you troubleshoot your computer's sleep issue. That article is specific to Mountain Lion, and can be found right here:
OS X Mountain Lion: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11080
Additionally, this older article might have some further troubleshooting steps for you, but it is more geared toward Snow Leopard and other older operating systems:
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
Hope this helps. Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

  • Mac Mini 2009 SL 6.0.1 won't sleep with Wake on Demand turned on...

I'm having an issue where my Mac Mini 2009 won't go to sleep at all when I have Wake on Demand turned on. I have been manually making it go to sleep and then loath and behold its back on a few minutes later. I know it's supposed to turn on once every two hours or so, but my Mini appears to not be sleeping at all after it turns back on. I thought this feature was supposed to save me electricity and money, not the opposite. I also have the Mac to go to asleep after 5 minutes. It's not doing that either. I haven't checked the logs to see what's going on. Any ideas?

Nope. I did change a few settings and the mac now manages to sleep. However, it wakes a few minutes later and then eventually goes back to sleep. This process cycles.
I found some good info on this site...
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10330473-263.html?tag=mncol
I basically just went into the terminal and with root privileges did a "pmset -a ttyskeepawake 0" which turns off the possibility of a remote login event.
Because my initial error message also was saying something about my airport I assumed it might be worth turning on AirPort on the Mini and forcing it not to make any connections to my AirPort Extreme station. At this point, I have turned off AirPort to see what it does with just the ttyskeepawake option turned off.
I might try a PMU reset to see if that has any effect.
Another thing that comes to mind is I have the Mac Mini hooked up to a Denon AV Receiver and then to an HDTV via a mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Perhaps, the Denon is waking it up?

  • Leopard on MDD-Display sleeps but computer won't sleep or wake-Need Help!

I installed Leopard on a 2nd internal drive and made it the boot drive. (I kept my 10.4.11 on the original internal drive.) Everything seems to run fine, but the machine will not go to sleep as told to do in System Prefs. The display sleeps, but the computer continues to run. (fans are on) It will not wake from this state. I have to power down and power up to get things going again.
I also have the 'Repair Permissions' issue.. Bar says about one minute but just sits there.
It's a MDD dual 1 gig, with 1.5 gig. mem.
Can anyone help figure this one out?
    John

I spent literally hours on the phone with Apple Support. We tried one thing after another with no success. We deleted com.apple files, one Pref. file after another, we unplugged one external device after another. It went on for about 4 hours or more. I finally couldn't stand it any more and we agreed to give up for the day.I did some more research on my own and heard rummers about PCI USB/Firewire cards sometimes causing problems. I had such a card installed. It was an old Orange Micro card. I removed the card and guess what.. Everything worked just fine. Why it worked with 10.4.11 and not 10.5.1, is beyond me, but there you have it. Oh yeah, I did also install the FULL download of the 10.5.1 upgrade. The Software Update version is a patch, the full download is much more.
Now I need to find a replacement PCI USB/Firewire card that runs with 10.5.1 Anyone have any suggestions?

  • IPad Mini Retina Won't Sleep or Wake with Cover

My new iPad Mini Retina worked fine for the first week or so, but now when I open or close the Apple magnetic cover, it doesn't automatically sleep or wake up.
I shut the iPad down and started it up again -- no change.
Is there a setting that got changed? Is something broken?
    Thanks for any help.

Never mind, I found the setting. But really, it shouldn't be called "Lock/Unlock" but rather "Wake/Sleep." I don't want it to lock, just sleep!

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • IMac 21.5-inch Won't Remember WIFI Networks

Hello. my not-even-1 old iMac 21.5 inch form may 2011 has another problem. It just started happening today. I turned on my iMac and started to use safari, when it said I wasn't connected to the internet. I looked up ath the top-right corner and none of the WiFI bars were filled. I put it back on my router and countinued on. I turned it off a little later, and came back and it did the same thing. I was starting to get concerned, so I reconnected and restated my iMac. It did it again. I read that repairning disc permissions is the best way to fix it. I tried it, but it did not work. Is my iMac broken? Also, it is using a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 and is running Mac OS X Version 10.7.4.

    My troubleshooting goes:
    1) reboot
    2) go to activity monitor in utilities and see what processes are running, there may be a surprise there
    3) look for the last several things I put on my computer to see if there is a conflict. I once downloaded something that had me going for hours, as the application downloaded shouldn't have messed things up, but it did.
Check that something like the memory isn't loose, go into "about my mac" and make sure everything checks out.
I have had iMacs for over ten years, and one thing I have learned is to trust my computer. All problems were software problems that I caused myself.
Well, if you have Applecare, they can usually spot the problem, though the process takes some time. But I am not an expert, just someone who has had iMacs for a long time.

  • Need IMac G5 1.8 Ghz 17 inch Rev A midplane replacement manual

    Hello everyone,
I bough my IMac since Dec 2004. The cpu fan procudes buzz noise since day one. I have had my midplane changed by an Apple dealer but the cpu fan noise is still there. I rarely use my IMac because I cannot bare the buzz noise. I have reseted PRAM, reinstall OS X but it does not help. I have opened the IMac's cover and disconnected the cpu fan cable, the buzz noise was gone. I want to take away the cpu fan and put in a new fan (perhaps a fan from a graphic card).
I could not take the whole midplane out of the IMac and I do not want to use force to pull the midplane. I cannot find the Do It yourself manual for this model anymore. Is there anyone who still have the midplane replacement manual for IMac G5 1.8 Ghz 17 inch Rev A (Super drive)?
    Thank a lot

  • IMac Ambient Light doesn't start up

My Imac G5 17"/2.0/1GB/400GB Ambient Light Sensor was very stable, working on Pro apps all day long.
Yesterday it freeze. Wont start up right: blue screen after the grey start up screen, noise fan. Started up with the install disc. I did a permissions repair. Started up fine, I worked a little and then it freeze again. Started up again with install disk again. Was working, shut down normally.
Then today, it doesn't even start up:
Black screen, sometimes switch on white light is on, sometimes not. If install CD is inside, I have some cd noises. Nothing happens and then after 40 sec I have the fan noise. Screen stays black.
Tried SMU and PRAM. Tried starting up in safe mode.
I have the fan noise and other sounds so I guess I don't need to do the "diagnostic LEDs" process ?
    Could it be the battery?
Can it be a "Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues "?
Is there any thing else I can try? I'm waiting for a suggestion and then I'll go to the store for repair. I will post my experiences and fix.
    Thanks.

If, in fact, that's what they do, it shouldn't affect your hard drive or the data on it. I had mine replaced, along with the inverter and power supply, and all my data were fine and intact.

  • I have a new 27"ACD connected to a 27" iMac (2010) and cannot control brightness on the ACD. Also, the option to turn off the ambient light sensor is not available. Tanks for any help.

I have connected a new 27"ACD to a 27" iMac (2010) and cannot independently adjust brightness on the external display. Also, the option for turning off the ambient light sensor is not available. The iMac has the latest updates according to Apple messages. Any help will be appreciated.

No, Detect Displays had no effect. However, I made the USB connection from the ACD to the iMac after the system was on. Following a re-start, all controls are available. Thank you for your response.

  • IMac G5 Ambient Light display BLACK  but this is diffrent.

    Hi all,
I have interesting problem with my iMac which is hard to explain but ill try.
So far i have failed to find a solution for this.
We all know that Black screens is a big iMac problem but mine is slightly diffrent. so here goes maybe you guys can help.
My iMac G5 Ambient Light would run well for days even for months as long as i dont turn the machine off.
    if i try to reboot:
    -No Startup chime,
    -Harddisk starts, runs then waits.
-30 sec later Fans blow at full speed.
    Diagnoses:
LED 1 on, LED 2 on, LED 3 off LED 4 off
my iMac does not get passed LED 2...
So we have power in the system just the display is not communicating and there is no overheating problem.
    The Wierd Bit:
This is very random but if i play with the iMac, trying to start it up sometimes it takes 20x pressing the on off switch in the back and sometimes 2 times and sometimes even trying for days. All of a sudden Presto the **** thing works again. So then i dont reboot for a couple of months scared it will not restart. At that moment everything works fine again with no problems.
LED 1 ON LED 2 ON LED 3 ON LED 4 OFF systems normal
Untill the moment i have to reboot again. once again black screen and i startup the procedure again. Done all the usuall stuff reset PRAM, VRAM, PMU nothing will work. Then playing with it ON / OFF, ON / OFF, ON / OFF, and Bang it goes again. Works fine for Days and months till i have to reboot the thing again or shut it off. The other wierd thing is its also not after every reboot. sometimes it would reboot fine and with the Startup chime. so the problem is very random and i cant seem to put my finger on the problem.
    What i know:
-HardDisk is running fine (checked). no problems there,
    -MEM is good (checked)
-LED indications when running normal LED 1 LED 2 LED 3 are on and LED 4 is off as it should be.
-Firmware is uptodate, version OSX uptodate. Cooling fans run sweet and clean when the iMac works.
    - Serie Number falls out side of the Repair Service Recall that Apple had annouced.
Everything seems to work as it should when iMac runs!!
So today it happend again i needed to move my iMac today so i turned it off moved it. Then wanted to turn it on again and there it was a black screen no chime and fans blowing. So now i have to play with it again to get it on again and working again.
Sorry for my Message to be so long but its the only way to give you guys a good clear picture of the problem im having.
    Hope you guys can help..
iMac G5 (Ambient Light)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1 Gig Ram

As should be obvious by now, your problem is caused by using a model-specific grey installer disk with another Mac model. Not only will it cause technical problems because is it not designed for this purpose, it is a violation of the license that comes with the Mac to use its disks to install the OS or other included software on another Mac.
You must obtain a retail copy of Leopard to install that OS on your iMac G5. You must have a license for each Mac you install it on, either the license that comes with that OS pre-installed on a Mac or the one that comes with the retail copy of the DVD.*
Also note that the grey disks for each Mac you own should be retained, as they include installers for the bundled software that comes with it & a model-specific Apple Hardware Test ("AHT") that must be run from that disk. You cannot easily duplicate the grey disks, in part because the AHT partition is not a conventional boot volume & a disk image file of the entire DVD must be written in a specific way to the duplicate to work like the original.
However, even if you manage to do this, the duplicate still cannot be used with another model, so the only reason to make a duplicate of a grey disk is as a backup for the original.
\* A site license or bulk license also meets this requirement, but you still must obtain a suitable installer disk.
