i got this computer for free with no ram and they told me the mother board was dead and didn't turn on. so i got it home and pluged it in and trun it on it took a lot force to get it on but it truned on and beeped 1 time so i search it up what it means 1 beep means 1 beep = no ram. the main thing is how can i tell if it dosent work with out ram and and opening it

Very easy to get the back off. Here is a DIY right from Apple which shows how to replace a HD but once the back is off you will see the RAM slots. If it is a bad mother board it is a more advanced job but doable. The cost of the mother board is the worst part. If it was not turning on at all before it could be a bad power supply too. These are a lot cheaper to obtain and the PDF is in the same area that I got this PDF. You got it for nothing so you have nothing to lose. Have a look at the mother board for bulging capacitors (the little cylinder shape units) and there are a dozen or more on the mother board. If these are bad then the "Free Imac" may not be such a great deal. Good luck

This is a known, ans ongoing issue. Rest assured you're not the only one affected. There are several threads here already discussing this, I suggest searhing them out if you want more details, and possible work-arounds for locally hosted content.

Ipod 1st gen replacement, still waiting for the box?

I filled in the form for the ipod 1st gen replacement program, but I am still waiting for the box to send my Ipod in???
The repair status says that the box was shipped at 23 november but still no box...

If I buy an iMac (educational price), do I get iWork for free?

Because I remember in one of the pictures there was a picture of it with the Mac, so was wondering if that comes along with it for free, alongside the £70 voucher..?!

What exactly do you need? iWork isn't actually for sale any longer, the items inside iWork all sell separately now.
Pages (word), Keynote (powerpoint), Numbers (excel) all sell for ~£13.99 each, so if you only need Pages for example, it's quite cheap.

Help needed as my G5 iMac PPC 1st Gen has died!

My iMac G5 PPC 1st Generation has just died. It will switch on and I get the first start up chime, then it tries to boot but stops at the grey screen with the loading circular dial icon. The grey screen shows some odd flickering and white vertical lines. I did have the logic board changed around this time last year. I also updated the ram early on to 2gb.
I've had this iMac for 5years now and although I would love a new iMac the cost at the moment is just too much.
Any advice or help appreciated.

I'm afraid that the warranty on repairs is only 90 days, so you are well out of that time line. Have you tried resetting the PMU?
1.Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
4. Release the power button.
5. Attach the computers power cable.
6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can also try a PRAM reset.
If your logic board is really shot, you can try calling Apple Customer Relations and see if they will help you 800-767-2775 (assuming that you are in the US).

Sent my 1st gen iPod nano off for replacement and haven't heard anything in nearly 5 weeks

So I sent off my iPod nano1st gen on the replacement program 4-5 weeks ago and I still haven't heard anything or the replacement delivery process hasn't went to the diagnosis phase. Shouldn't I know something by now or have confirmation that apple have received my iPod nano? Ay replies to this would be here helpful.

IPod 1st gen - black screen except for 5 seconds when charging

Hi everyone !,
I am having an issue with my iPod Touch 1st generation bought in December 2007.
this week-end i've decided i'd work under my house for some technical reasons i will not explain here..
i've been listenning some music, and realized my battery was almost dead.
i've so decided to go upstairs pick up the power charger and plug my ipod.
all went fine...
worked for couple of hours until i was done,
i've unplugged the ipod, then came back in, did some stuff in the garage for an hour or so, and decided i wanted to listen to music again, and then.. the ipod did not react to the on-off button as well to the home button.
when i unplugged it from the power charger, i saw the battery was 3/4 charged. i've so decided to wait until the evening to check it out and kept on working in between.
the evening, i plugged the ipod onto the computer > no reaction
plugged it onto the charger the screen lighted on, logo, then the light goes off, but i seem to see the apple logo in the back like "printed" on the screen then disappearing. i 've tried soft reset, hard-reset... nothing works... i've put it in recovery mode to erase/restore from both my mac and my PC, itunes detects it in recovery mode even if the screen remains black, try to restore but it fails, error code 1601.
i am fearing it simply died ... but i am anyway seeking for any piece of advice in case of... even if i was thinking getting an iPhone 4S, that'd be pitty if my iPod bought 4 years ago just dies before Xmas...
thanking in advance all mac-gifted people who would have any piece of usefull advice.

How to mirror imac with 1st gen apple tv

I have a new iMac and a first generation Apple TV. Imac is upstairs and Apple TV is downstairs connected by ethernet. PLaying media through iTunes is fine but how can I mirror my iMac? For example, I want to be able to watch streamed video from the internet on the TV rather than the iMac.

Unfortunately, the Apple TV 1 doesn't support AirPlay.

Update a font I got for free?

I received part of the Garamond Premier Pro font family as a gift from Adobe for registering one of my versions of InDesign or Creative Suite. (It's been a while; I can't remember which it was.) I see now that the font has been updated several times and probably fixes a kerning error I'm seeing. Does anyone know if it's possible for me to get a free update to the current version and, if so, how to do it?

So WHY would I want to purchase iOS3 for my 1st gen iPod?

Hi there. I've just upgraded my MacBook hdd and OS X. Now when I plug my 1st gen iPod touch in to sync, it says that there's an iOS 3 available and that 2-4 gen iPods get it for free, but 1st gen have to purchase it.
Unfortunately, my iPod doesn't seem to be syncing without this upgrade. So, either there's something wrong or else they're trying to force me to buy it (though it doesn't ay so). I'm not against purchasing an upgrade if I see the advantages. But as it stands, I'm quite happy with my iPod the way it is. I've looked and looked, but I can't find anything that tells my WHY I would want to purchase an upgrade. Mac support pages are completely vague, just explaining that 1st gen must pay for it.
Any insight into the sitch?

Thanks, but I was hoping for a more subjective, feedback sort of answer.
I did see that Wiki, but it doesn't answer me really. It gives me technical stuff, but nothing that seems to make it stand out from the former iOS's that explains why a user would find it advantageous to purchase it. It includes a little bug fix for this, a little bug fix for that, security upgrades...all stuff standard to regular OS updates that no one should have to pay for. Not why apple would require one to BUY it. (e.g. upgrading from one OS X to a newer one includes pretty obvious new features.) No outstanding new features jump out at me when staring at that dry dry listing of whatnot.
Looking at it again, it seems that it might be useful for an iPhone as an upgrade. But for the iPod touch it seems absurd to force us to buy it.
I've upgraded my iTunes, and NOW it says that my iPod IS up-to-date. Still, it won't sync (although it recognizes my iPod just find.) What is the deal?!

Touch 1st Gen now seems really slow....

Hi I have a 1st Gen touch 16Gb. got v3 S/ware on. been using it no problems.
It just seems now its getting really slow. I dont have that many apps on, prob about 20, music and videos, but theres still about 2gb of space on.
It just seems now its slow in moving between screens, surfing in safari, and general use, it all is a lot slower than it used to be. I know that my 1G has a slower CPU than the newer one, but it didnt use to be like this.
Is it worth my doing a factory reset and then a re-install of the backup, or ill it be the same again after the restore?
if not what can I do?

Before you go that far, have you tried simply actually turning off your touch? (hold the sleep/wake button until a red slider appears, and then slide the slide to off. Turn the touch back on by holding down the sleep/wake switch until a silver apple appears; wait several seconds for the touch to reboot).

My iPad 1st gen is freezing up here and there.

I bought a new wifi 3G iPad 1st Gen back in December. for some reason lately whe nusing it it will freeze up for a few seconds whether it be swiping, opening up an app etc. Any advice on what to do or perhaps how to clear out things if that is the issue? Thanks in advance.

Is there a "New" button at the top right of the Playlists section of Music?
There is no Edit button to delete music, swipe sideways on the song to reveal the delete button. Tap and hold on the artwork in Artists and albums to reveal the (X) button to delete. Or connect the iPad back up to iTunes on the computer and check your sync settings for music to ensure you are syncing the right content.

Do I have to pay for an app that was offered for free once?

I had to restore my iPhone and there was one app that I got for free when it was on special. Now the app is back to its orignal $3 price tag. So my question is, do I have to pay for it this time around?

How to redownload purchased apps from the App Store

Suddenly, my 1st gen can't access iTunes store. It sits on "Accessing iTunes Store", with a spinning wheel for days. I can access the store from my iMac, but not the Apple TV. Everything is up to date. What's the deal?

I can't figure out why my 1st gen appletv cannot access the itunes store. All newer movies are coming up to view and I can watch previews, but when I go to rent, it stays on the spinning wheel with the Accessing iTunes Store forever. I've left it going for at least 4 or 5 days. I can rent from my iMac, but all I have is the headphone, analog, 2-channel audio feed and not the true digital surround. It sounded much better from the appletv. HELP!

Read a bunch of posts from 2008 and 2010. The only step I found that I hadn't tried was the ol' plug pull. After that, I got the first movie I tried renting. ??? At least it works now.
