IMac G5 2.0 freezes within minutes of startup

My iMac G5 2.0 freezes within a few minutes of starting up. By "freezes" I mean the spinning beachball appears, and the computer will not respond. This is often preceded by a distinct "metronome" kind of ticking (it sounds like the hard drive freaking out, but I don't know for sure). I have run all software updates (10.4.8). I zapped the PRAM - no change. This has been getting worse for a while. I used to think it was a particular program, like Mail or Safari, but now it crashes with either one, before I can even open them both. I have read many other posts, but none of them mention the beachball (I am not getting any error screen at all), and none of the mention the metronome/ticking sound. Help!
iMac G5 2.0Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks for the quick reply. My computer does not fall within the repair program (my iMac is a 17-inch, EMC 2055), and I am not under AppleCare (my iMac is 19 months old). I don't think the hard drive is dying, because I have heard the sound once in a while since I first got the computer (I guess it's possible that it was bad from the beginning). If it is the power supply, any idea how much that will cost me?

okay so ive had so many problems with this laptop. i got in auguast and ive had to reformat it twice, the first time was a week after i got it.
so a while ago it started this thing where it woudl freeze up 5 or ten minutes after i started it up. I had no idea what was going on, i uninstalled several programs, to see if they were causing it (aim, videogames and such) and nothing worked. finally someone told me it could be because of the system overheating. i listened to his advice and let it sit a couple hours for it to cool off. i turned it back on and it worked fine. i reinstalled everything and it worked fine for about a month.
a couple days ago i had a windows update, which it kept insisting to restart for. I had to use it for school so i waited till i got home to restart it. actually i just shut it off and i figured it would finish configuring the updates when i turned it on the next morning. I did so and after configuring the updates, it started again. Freezing 5-10 minutes after i turned it on. this was last friday morning. this time i thought i knew what the problem was. i left it off throughout the day and when i got home i took it out and again it froze. the next day i was extremely busy so i didn't even get to check it then. i tried it again sunday, mind you this was after 2 days, and it was still freezing. ive tried it several times the last couple days. now im getting really pissed. I'm about to call toshiba support but i was just wondering if there was some small mistake i was making that i can do to fix this.

All of a sudden I keep getting message that my computer must be restarted and it freezes. I restart it and within minutes it happens again. This is a 27 inch iMac with latest system and software. Any ideas of what is wrong and how to fix it?

10.7.5 is not the latest system, 10.8.3 is. However your message sounds like  a Kernel Panic, does the message look similar to About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages? If so, then if you can get the machine to restart normally then please post the Kernel Panic Report which you can find by following directions in How to log a kernel panic. Please post back with the KP log, and we can take a look. However if the machine continues to not restart then my guess is a hardware failure suck as a hard disk or failed RAM in which case you should take it into your local Apple Store or AASP for repair.

Look in Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and see if you have any runaway processes using a lot of %CPU.
I would also strongly recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. If it reports errors you can Google them or post them here.

  • Won't start up or crashes within minutes

I have a Power PC G5 which up until this week worked fine. Now, it will start up but crashes within minutes, no matter what I do (check mail, open Safari, open Address Book). Sometimes it doesn't start up at all. I press the power button and it starts to come on but then shuts down. I updated all software, zapped the PRAM and ran repair disk (it said it seemed fine. Any ideas?

Shut the computer dow, remove the power cord and all peripherals, wait for 30 seconds, replace the power cod and press the start button at the same time.
If you do not have the iSight, try the steps in [this|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908] Apple article.

Launch the Terminal app in /Utilities/, run these two commands (copy & paste each one separately and hit the return key):
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
at the Password: prompt, type in your admin password, carefully since nothing displays on the screen, and hit the return key. These should unlock your drives. You might have to restart.

    Hi patrickbryant,
Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
If your iMac is becoming unresponsive when you start up, I recommend trying to boot into Safe Mode as well as using Disk Utility to verify your hard disk. You can find these steps outlined at this link:

  • Installed new Ram & 10 minutes after startup the computer keeps freezing.

I have mac book pro from 2006 (1.83ghz)  I recently installed 2 new 1G ram chips from crucial for a total ram of 2G. I am running osx 10.6. and 10 minutes after startup the computer keeps freezing.  Could it be that 10.6 is too much for the processor?

10.6 is not "too much for" your MBP. You may have gotten a faulty RAM module — it happens.
Start your machine up while holding down the D key, and when Apple Hardware Test appears, select the Extended Test. Run the extended test at least once all the way through, if you can, and post back with the exact text of any error message it reports.
If the test can't be completed, you definitely have a hardware problem, and the first suspect is the new RAM. In that case, reinstall the RAM that originally came in your machine and run the extended test again. If it is completed without errors this time, the Crucial RAM is clearly at fault and should be exchanged.

  • Since I upgraded to Lion, my computer (iMac mid 2010) intermittently freezes.

Since I upgraded to Lion 10.7.3, my computer (iMac mid 2010) intermittently freezes.  The mouse moves, but I can't do anything.  I can unfreeze it every time by calling up the Force Quit box and then excaping out.  I've tried everything (all upgrades installed including firmware, new version of Flash), but it still freezes.  Any help is appreciated.

There are a couple of things to do. First is restart in the Recovery Partition and repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility and Repair the Disk. How you do this is when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key and choose the Recovery Partition. Choose Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions at least twice. Then while you are in DU run Repair Disk twice. Quit Disk Utility and restart however restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches, it's possible one or more has become corrupt. After it has fully restarted then restart normally and test.
If you get the same behavior post back to try some other items.
BTW how much Free RAM does the machine have. You can find this out in Activity Monitor which is in Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor and click the System Memory tab.

  • My MacBook Pro 15" i7 2011 freezes suddenly minutes after starting up.

My MacBook Pro 15" i7 2011 freezes suddenly minutes after starting up the computer.
Sometimes it beeps after freezing, and keeps beeping forever until I shut down the computer by pressing the power button.
Other times the screen gets a little darker and a text appears saying I need to turn off the computer by pressing the power button and restart, but after restarting the computer freezes again. Each time I turn it on it takes only a few minutes to freeze it seams, about 2-3 minutes or less, and occasionaly it doesn´t even start up.
I don´t recall the exact version of the operating system, its MacOSX (10.6 or something)
    Any sollutions?

Three beeps is usually indicative of a RAM problem.  Take out one RAM chip and see what happens and then swap with the other one.  See if there is a difference.  Also engage the Apple hardware test and see if that offers any useful information.
    Ciao.

  • PPro CC14 won't stop crashing and freezing only minutes after editing commences...

I seem to have tried everything to fix the issue but PPro CC14 won't stop crashing and freezing only minutes after editing commences. I am working on a Mac and have just updated to Mavericks as a final attempt to help solve the problem. I have tried calling Adobe but their phone support in Australia is shocking. I have resorted to posting here but haven't had any help yet. I really need to sort this issue out ASAP.

Its it possibly related to your graphics drivers?  Seems similar to something I was experiencing that was resolved by updating my nvida cuda drivers (see thread link).  I also started running activity monitor to keep track of the memory and processor use.  That said after solving the problem by updating my drivers and switching to the CUDA acceleration, on occasion I get into ruts where it opens and freezes all the time.  It does seem helpful to try and reduce project size if possible - I normal keep a track record of sequence revisions and such, but when possible it seems that clearing out as much as possible by deleting or project managing into a new project can help things run better.
