IMac G5 20" 2.0GHz revB won't sleep automatocally (OSX.4.1)

This one is driving me nuts:
The computer will sleep, stay asleep and wake-up without crashing if I put the machine to sleep manually either via menu or key-combo (so long as I don't use my RF wireless mouse...that one took 2 days of searching to find)
The display will sleep
The hard drive will sleep
Whatever automatic setting I use for computer sleep is ignored, I have tried the following
1. Reset SMU
2. Reset PRAM
3. OF Reset (reset-nvram, set-defaults and reset-all)
4. Removing all log-in items
5. Removing all peripherals except wired Apple keyb/mouse
6. Deleting com.apple.Powermanagement.plist
7. Run periodic scripts
8. Repair permissions - no problems found
9. Disk verify/repair from Apple CD - no problems found
10. Creating a new account
I got it to sleep automatically once via some comination of 1 thru 4 above but as soon as I re-instated my login items and re-started, the computer went back to its insomnia....the weird thing being that when I again removed the login items, it wouldn't sleep again.
I disabled Airport and didn't have any connected network shares, Processor settings are at Automatic.

I only have the iCal scheduler and iTunes Helper task. I was suspicious of iSync (and do it manually), however you said you have already tried removing it.
I have the network time sync enabled and it doesn't seem to cause any problems.
I haven't had any problems with screen savers stopping sleep mode. I stop work, and it shows the screen saver (currently the RSS feed one) for a while, and then sleeps.
I don't have software update set to work automatically. I don't have iDisk set to update automatically.
Do you have a wired keyboard, or Bluetooth? I'm using Bluetooth. The mouse won't wake it, but the keyboard will.
Are you connected to Ethernet? Is there any chance anything else on a network is waking your iMac? (I'm only on WiFi to a wireless access point DSL modem router).
Do you have any external devices connected to USB or Firewire? I don't have anything connected at all. Connect them when I need them.
Sounds like you are on the track of whatever is the problem. Hope you will report back on the results of your tests.

Hi, new iMac 24", 10.5.7, set screen saver at 5 minutes, and display to sleep at 10 minutes. Screen saver works, but it will not sleep. I've changed the setting, and rebooted, still no luck.
I tried everything from suggestions, with no help. I found that if I turn off "screen sharing" in system preferences, it will sleep the display for whatever minutes I set. I have to leave "screen sharing" on because I have flat screen tv hooked up to watch video files on, and I use iPhone app to control screen, to hit play and pause, etc. It is set up with a password, and only my iPhone is used when I am watching something. Why should screen sharing stop display from sleeping? I've left screen sharing on since I got this, so I can remotely log in with "back to my mac" from the road, and it never stopped the display from sleeping before? I shouldn't have to turn off screen sharing just to sleep the display? Am I missing something?

USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.

After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
Check the printer queue!"
Allan Jones says "sometimes there is Network activity: launch System Preferences > Energy Saver > "Options" tab and uncheck "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access."

IMac won't sleep and freezes on shutdown

My iMac has developed an annoying problem. Most nights, when I try to put the computer to sleep, it goes to sleep and the immediately wakes back up. I exit all programs running in the dock and try to sleep it again, but the same thing happens. I will then try to shut it down, but it freezes on the screen that shows the wheel with the lines (sorry for the bad description there). Any ideas?

Now my external firewire drives won't sleep on 2012 iMac

I have WD Mybook Studio and a Lacie2big hard drives. Now they won't sleep when the iMac is put to sleep. I guess I'll have to look for firmware updates. I checked on the WD this morning and didn't see anything new. I'll check on the Lacie tonight.
Has anyone else run into this?

Hey Guys... I was having the same spinning issue with my externals hard drives and this firmware update seemed to fix the problems. The update for the WD drives available on the WD support page.

I had a similar problem with my G4 iMac. I ended up just leaving the dead drive in the computer and picking up an external LaCie CD/DVD burner. The model I bought is no longer available (if you're interested in seeing the specs, it's here: http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-16x-LightScribe-FireWire-300978U/dp/B000FGJVF4 ) but I've had no problems with it whatsoever. Even after almost 3 years of heavy use, it is still going strong.

My IMAC recognises an external drive but won't let me save to it. Message is the there is no space available but there is 500G left.

How much is "plenty of storage"? Go to Settings>General>About>Available
The GB size of the download file is the compressed size (like .zip or .dmg). When the file is installed/uncompressed it can be 2-3 times larger.

Well, first things first... is the power cord fully plugged into the back of the iMac (and the wall, for that matter)?
Make sure the wall outlet has power, too... I've scratched my head over stupid issues where I forgot to flip a wall switch.
If the outlet does have power, then try doing a pram zap. Command + option + P + R (hold those at startup).
If the machine is receiving power, you should be able to see some LEDs if you look through the bottom grate of the machine to the left of the RAM door.

New iMac won't sleep with internet sharing on

Less than 3 month old iMac (core i5) has stoppped being able to sleep when Internet Sharing is enabled. It took me a good while to narrow it down to that but I've confirmed that when Internet sharing is off, it will sleep as it's supposed to. When sharing is on though, not only will it not automatically sleep per the energy saver setting, it wo'nt even sleep when forced with the Apple command. The display will turn off, but the machine does not sleep. I can tell by the facts that my wifi access on my iPhone continues to run off the iMac, and the Caps lock on the keyboard remains lit. (Too bad the blinking LED is no more on the new iMacs).
Sleep was working fine when I first got the new machine; it seems to have stopped shortly after I upgraded to Lion. (I think it may have been working for a few days after installing Lion, but I'm not positive...I'm thinking now I just thought it was asleep because the display would turn off.)
I've looked at all the related sleep posts I could find but nothing seems to address this particular issue. I know I could just turn off sharing whenver I want it to sleep, but tha't's like having to disconnect my car battery when I want to shut the car off.
Any help is appreciated.

Well, I'm certainly no expert at this and I'd never enable internet sharing (being too concerned about the health of my Mac and/or not knowing what untoward sites/networks/people may be seeking access), but it seems to me that having it turned on means that your computer is sharing a connection, so anytime anyone on the network seeks access, it will either wake up the Mac or cause it to stay awake. Here is an excerpt from the Help Menu (in Finder) (which has nothing to do with your question, but I found it interesting nonetheless):
If your Internet connection and your local network use the same port (Ethernet, for example), investigate possible side effects before you turn on Internet sharing. In some cases (if you use a cable modem, for example) you might unintentionally affect the network settings of other ISP customers, and your ISP might terminate your service to prevent you from disrupting its network.

Machine won't sleep on it's own.

This may not be a Leopard specific issue, I had it with Tiger also. My eMac and new iMac won't sleep with the HP All-in-One printer software installed. The software has three active apps (one which controls a root process) that won't let it sleep. I can manually sleep it, but the energy saver setting is useless. The display will sleep, but not the machine.
I posted in the eMac category, but this is not machine specific, either, seems to be HP specific.
I trashed the culprit apps, but then I couldn't scan (the device was not found); it did let the machine sleep, though. I tried fixing the permissions after re-installing the latest software from the HP site (a VERY long process), and turning off the printer, still no sleep.
Anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions? I thought maybe if I created an alias for the culprit apps and stored the originals on a removable device, or even a .dmg and only mount it when I need certain printer functions, that may stop them from constantly running.
Any help would be appreciated

My eMac FINALLY achieved sleep last night after about 50 min. I have the sleep timer set for 1 minute, maybe the fact there was a scheduled TM backup kept it awake. I have the printer turned off, and it has been manually slept and re-started since it was turned off, don't know if any of those was a factor.

I had anacron installed, but removed it the best I could, it is not needed in Leopard.........

2010 Mac Mini won't sleep

Hello, everything was working fine until I accessed my mac mini from my old iMac G4 to share some files. Now my new Mac Mini won't sleep. Here is what I have done. Ejected the Mac Mini on the iMac. Turned off the iMac, stopped sharing everything on the Mac Mini including files, my printer and iTunes media and reset the PRAM. Still the Mac Mini won't sleep. It's set to it's defaults of 10 minutes to sleep the monitor and itself but only the monitor goes to sleep after the 10 minutes. Very frustrated...

Hello Euchre and thank you for replying. I have unchecked all the boxes within the "Sharing" options that I checked some time ago. When I did that, sharing was automatically turned off. Still I am having the issue. I'll try putting the monitor at 9 minutes and the computer at 10 to see if that works. I'll be back. Thanks again, Ed

Won't Sleep Automatically

Strange happening: I can manually put the computer to sleep, and when I close the lid it goes to sleep. However... it will not go to sleep at the time set in the Energy Saver Preference Panel. Thoughts?

Pro won't sleep automatically

Bought a new pro and used migration assistant to move stuff from my iMac.
Now the Pro won't sleep automatically. It sleeps when I tell it to or on Schedule at 0100 but not after x mins of inactivity.
The iMac it migrated from had no such issues.
Is there any reset I can do to cure the problem?

I have about a 2 year Mac pro (intel) and it will not sleep on its own. I can manually sleep it.
The hard drive cycles up and down about every 2 minutes or so continually and the display remains blank. It will keep cycling the drive until I manually sleep it.
I tried a few times doing the reset thing and once it helped but in a week or so it started to do it again. I went and made up a new user and it seemed to fix it for a month and then it want back to doing it again. It is very annoying. I even updated it to Leopard and it sill did it. I'll try the reset again and see.

Insomnia - - My Mac won't SLEEP

I just re-installed OS 10.5.4, ... and began to have a couple buggy behaviours:
Primarily, my computer won't respond when I try to put it in SLEEP mode.
Also, there is a funky little 1/4" square that appears in every window that opens. Clicking & dragging over it makes it go away, but it then reappears on the next open window.
p.s. In an attempt to 'fix' these anomolies, I downloaded the upgrade to 10.5.8 but this didn't help.
Any ideas ????? (This is my second post... with no responses).
