Imac G5 20 inch sound like i have crickets in my computer

when i turn it on it sounds really loud , then it kinda slows down , then mutes. When it sleeps then awakes from sleep i hear them again. Of course not really crickets more like a fan that has no oil or a squeeky wheel. anybody else heard any like this out of there mac? should i call apple care? and if so how long does it take to get fixed. HELP!!!!

Neil,
Could you please do a recording of your whirr sound using the built-in microphon3...like listed below...please note settings [full blast microsphone sensitivy in sound prefs] used for recoding
Jurgen
I had to re-record my iMac sound with the built-in mic using spin doctor...because I had the microphone on default sensitivity. For this recording, I turned it fully up.
I also added recordings submitted by others. So you have now a good comparison whether all machines sound the same or different.
Play it in iTunes. Download link is below:
http://homepage.mac.com/jkraus/Macsounds.zip
My file [JK_iMacG5] is 1 MB, 62 seconds long. There is music during the first few seconds which convinces you that there is actually something recorded.
Recording conditions:
Microphone input level [Sound preferences]: full blast..note the full mic level amplifies the computer’s natural sound. It is therefore louder than real. Nevertheless, it gives you a good idea of the pitch.
Uptime: >1 hour
Hard drive T: 45C
Smart Disk T: 49C
CPU: 50-55C
Fans at standard speeds:
CPU: 1500 rpm
Hard 2300 RPM
Syst 1700 rpm
I am grateful for more submissions

  • Songs sound like they have radio interference rather than music on them.

    1. Songs play with the wrong title, some won't play but don't show the "can't locate icon '!'", others sound like they have picked up radio interference or play what sounds like a TV or Radio soap opera.
I've 'repaired', deleted and reinstalled iTunes, to no avail. Whether playing in order or shuffle, when it hits one of these it eventually skips thru to the next good song or closes iTunes.
I have deleted and reinstalled a good many but with 1000s thought there might be an easier way to resolve.
    2. This is in a seperate topic but included in case there is any connection: Every time I add a new song or reopen iTunes it goes thru 100+ songs "Determining Gapless Playback Information"!
This uses 100% of a 320gb hard drive with hardly anything on it and takes on average 30 seconds per song = approx 50 mins!
    Thx!

  • Computer noise-sounds like a fan of sorts, but computer isn't hot

I encountered this problem a while back, but it had stopped occurring until just recently. Almost from the minute I boot up, a whirring sound is heard, and it is loud. It's really bothersome while I try to take notes in a class. It almost sounds like it is trying to read a disc or something; however, no disc is inserted. Where top half of the MacBook meets the half with the keyboard, there seems to be hot air blowing out and is where the sound is most audible. If anyone has any suggestions about how to make this stop, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!
    Coco

Hi, coco. That's the cooling fan in your MacBook, transferring heat from the machine to the air that it's blowing through the machine. It's the reason your MacBook isn't hot. If you made it stop, the MacBook would be hot.
To reduce the buildup of heat that triggers the fan, quit any nonessential processes that are running (Dashboard widgets are particularly famous for wasting zillions of processor cycles) and/or use a less processor-intensive application for your note-taking.

    Hi there,
You're running an old version of Safari. Before troubleshooting, try updating it to the latest version: 6.0. You can do this by clicking the Apple logo in the top left, then clicking Software update.
You can also update to the latest version of OS X, 10.8 Mountain Lion, from the Mac App Store for $19.99, which will automatically install Safari 6 as well, but this isn't essential, only reccomended.
Thanks, let me know if the update helps,

  • HT203200 When I try to sync my iphone to my imac it deletes any apps that I have added on my computer and wont install on my iphone and visa versa. Itunes wont let me authorise from the imac with errors of -54 and -50. Can you pls help??

When I try and sync my iphone (backup) with my imac any apps that I have put on the imac OR my iphone will not sync to eachother, so I lose some of my apps. WHen itunes (on the imac) tells me to authorise the changes/apps and I put my details in, it comes up with an itunes error code of -54 and -50. I cannot sync my iphone correctly to back up on the imac and I need to do this as I use my phone for work. I have an iphone 4GS and run Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    Can anyone help me please?

Thank you Carolyn, I understand that and do use the same P/w for both the iphone and the computer and the apps were origionally for the iphone anyway, they just used to back on the computer and now they wont and the imac even cancels them off my iphone when I sync. And it says "Itunes" has made an error, try again...with the coes -54 and -50. This means I canot ack up my iphone properly.

  • My iMac produces a sound like a fan.

Once in a while my iMac makes a loud noise like a fan. I don't know how long it last cause I always turn it off to be on the safe side. It's a 27" and purchased it at 2009.
    Any suggestions?

Did you make any changes to the iMac such as replacing the hard drive? If a temperature sensor is disconnected or has a problem the fan(s) will run fast to protect the system. The other possibility is described in this article, but it sounds like you have already tried unplugging the power cord to reset the SMC.
iMac: Fans run at full speed after computer turns on
I suggest testing for a possible sensor issue by running the built-in Apple Hardware Test. To run the diagnostic turn on your iMac and immediately press and hold the 'D' key down. Once the diagnostic loads select the correct language and then run the test. Be sure to write down any error codes that are generated since they will indicate the possible source of the problem. For more information refer to Using Apple Hardware Test.

  • 27'' iMac making sound like bongos drumming

f`or lack of a better description my 27'' iMac is making a sound like someone is constantly drumming on bongos.  It will stop for a few seconds and then start up again until I restart the computer. What is this.

A suggestion across more than a few discussions, says to replace the keyboard.
If a keyface is stuck down, or the switch faulty inside the keyboard, the audio
sound usually associated with that function (with sounds on) is what you hear.
You could try making a new user account and test for this odd sound there.
If it still exists after a time of use, the keyboard may be OK. Still you may
have to contact Apple Store and set an appointment with a Genius about it.
{However those with a background in strange movies have another opinion...
    it's jumanji: we've wondered where it would turn up next.}
Anyway, you could see if your Mac & k/b is still under warranty; or take it to an
Apple Store genius bar (with appointment) and ask they check it for you.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My Ibook sounds like it working on something but it actually dont! ANNOYING

Been looking for answer through all the forum couldnt finde the right answer. First of all sorry if my English is not correct Im originally from Norway.
Just got my Ibook G4 month ago. And at the beggining I was amazed how silent it working! But few days ago it start to show some behavior. here is symptoms:
It still works very quiet, BUT! when it totally quiet I can hear that even if I do nothing on laptop it still give that tiny sound like processor(?) or harddisk(?) trying to do something. Hard to explain, this sounds like when I open some program computer give this quiet scratching sound when processor starts working. Well thats sound comes and repeats non stop every 10 sec even If I dont do absolutely anything.
I was trying to use disk utility and its appear that everything is allright.
I was trying to monitor computer activity and here is what it shows:
    ACTIVE PROCESSE:
    pmTool ......... root
    Activity monitor
    window server
    config ... root
    kernel_task ... root
Those processes working all the time when I do monitor activity
And this processe appear from time to time
    SystemUIserver
    update.... root
Does anyone have an idea what can cause this "working processes" in my Ibook which gives this tiny sound.
It dosnt seems big problem for me, but it is annoying especially this part that I dont know what can cause that sound. Im totally in love with my Ibook and was really amazed how quiet it is and Im just trying to figure out whats wrong.
By the way since I got it I also installed next programs:
    MSN messenger
    Yahoo messenger
    LimeWire
    Windows media player
    VLC player
    STUFFIT
    DIVX converter
Can any of those programs cause that working sound? Maybe I just shoul reinstall opeariton system?
    Thanks in advance
    ANTON S.

    SUVORKIN,

I don't think reinstalling the system software will fix your problem. Usually hardware makes the noises and software raises the blood pressure. Are you a former Windows user? Lots of EX-Windows users feel like they need to reinstall their system software often, but it is not necessary with Mac OS X. The same thing with defragmenting the hard drive. It isn't needed with a Mac (unless one is making a huge movie and is constantly saving pieces of it - example) because of HFS+ (Hierarchy File System) and HFAC (Hot File Adaptive Clustering). You may want to look at You do not have to defragment your hard drive because of Hot File Adaptive Clustering. You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #25668 on About disk optimization with Mac OS X.
Developer Connection Document on HFS+ Volume Format says,
"Most files on a disk are rarely, if ever, accessed. Most frequently accessed (hot) files are small. To improve performance of these small, frequently access files, they are moved near the volume's metadata, into the metadata zone. This reduces seek times for most accesses. As files are moved into the metadata zone, they are also defragmented (allocated in a single extent), which further improves performance. This process is known as adaptive hot file clustering.
The relative importance of a frequently used (hot) file is called its temperature. Files with the hottest (largest) temperatures are the ones actually moved into the metadata zone. In Mac OS X version 10.3, a file's temperature is computed as the number of bytes read from the file during the recording period divided by the file's size in bytes. This is a measure of how often the file is read."

  • Fan noise sounds like rattling. Intermittent

HI everyone, my iMac starting making what sounds like a rattle coming from the fan, I do not know which, but if you face the iMac it sounds like its on the left hand side. if you are playing a game or have multiple windows open and move the mouse or trackpad to move the window up and down the rattle gets louder. If you leave the window alone the sound fades to nothing. It's been sent off once to a company called opal, approved fixers. This was sent back to me after 2 wks with no fault found. Now it's doing the noise again. If I play any game via steam it comes back. I describe the noise as a bit of paper banging into a desk fan.
Any info would help, first time posting. Windows convert.

Welcome to the iMac Users Forum. It sounds like there could be something touching but the fans get louder at higher speeds. Here is a Widget that you can use to monitor fan spped, internal temps and a lot of other things:

If you had it worked on during warranty Apple may cover you as it wasn't fixed the first time around. It would be worth asking (not here) apple repairs support.

  • Headphone audio sounds like it's coming out of a hole?

Two days ago, I downloaded a radio app to my 2nd gen iPod touch. Sounded fine for a while, then suddenly faded. I could hear the music just fine, but the voices were so quiet I could barely hear them. I switched over to regular music and it did the same thing. I fiddled around with my headphones, thinking they were dying, and got it to work by pressing the jack into my ipod hard, putting pressure on it. I figured it was just old headphones and went and bought another pair.
But it's still doing it. Brand new headphones and they only work when I put a crushing pressure onto the jack. What's going on here?

I can't be sure, but it sounds like you have a bad contact in your headphone port. I would take it to an Apple Store to get a new one or call AppleCare to have it replaced.

  • Music Sounds Like the Chip Munks singing

I have an a6537c Pavilion and the music sounds like junk.  Sounds like the Chip Munks.  What can I do?

Well... sounds like you have an audio enhancement enabled. There are a few places where they can be set. Check the following places to turn them off:
    Windows Media Player 11
    1. Play music
    2. Right-click menu bar.
    3. From the menu that opens, select View, Enhancements, and Play Speed.
    4. Adjust the Play Slider to 1.0
    Windows Sound (Realtek codec)
    1. Right click the volume icon next to the time in the taskbar.
    2. Select Sounds.
    3. Select the Playback tab.
    4. Select your default playback device denoted by a green circle with a check (probably Speakers).
    5. With the playback device selected, click the Properties button.
    6. Click the Enhancements tab.
    7. Select Disable all sound effects.
    8. Click OK.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cant find playlist on itunes after i have downloaded on new computer

I have a new lap top computer and downloaded itunes on the computer and my songlists are there what can i do

    Hey there AuntiK,
It sounds like you have a new computer, you downloaded iTunes to it and are not seeing your playlists that you have on the other computer. You should transfer your iTunes library from the older computer, to the new one with this article:

  • I want to download itunes to my laptop and have the same library i have on my main computer at home. How can I do this?

I have a laptop which I use away from home and would like to download itunes so if i download something on my laptop, i can transfer it to my iPad straight away without having to transfer the music to my main computer. How can i have my library on my laptop itunes like i have on my main computer? is this a possibility?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • I just installed lion and suddenly I have problems starting the computer

I installed lion on my mac a week ago (mac 20.5 inch) and suddenly I have problems starting the computes, sometimes, but lately almost always, it takes a long time to start up (more than 2 min) and then the keyboard does not work and the mouse works partially i.e. the cursor moves but does not respond to clicks, also, when I move the cursor over the dock it does not appear the tag with the application name I'm over, basically I can't do anything except reboot the hard way. After a few times it usually stops happening but I don't know why exactly. Sometimes after rebooting a message appears indicating that I restarted the computer after having a problem and asks me if I want to open all the applications that I had in the previous session (in this case none) when I say yes the problem keeps happening but when I say no the problem stops. To make thins even more difficult just now it didn't let me choose "cancel" because the keyboard and the mouse have the same problems I explained before.

Are they each separately paired with the computer via BT preferences?
You also can check your Startup Disk preferences by selecting your startup volume then clicking on Restart. Does this cause a faster restart?
You might also try booting into Safe Mode then booting normally. Safe mode takes considerably longer for startup and will require you enter your password.
