IMac G5 airport issue

It would seem reading the rough the iMac G5 forum that many of the G5's are having issues talking to Airports. I don't believe it is an issue with the AEX / ABS since other devices work fine. However thought I'd cross post to see if anyone can shed any light...
It (the iMac G5) will communication with either a Airport Express (6.3) or a Airport Base Station (new 802.11n 7.1.1) but after a while it just drops off the network.
I place a AEX within 3 feet of the iMac and I'm only getting a 40% signal with lots of noise, nothing has changed but just in case I've changed channels with no joy.
I was suspecting a airport card issue but I think it may well be a recent update (maybe something to do with the 802.11n enabler software for intel's - some kind of preperation patch???).
I'm pretty sure it is nothing to do with my ABS or AEX since a I have a Mac Mini, WINtel laptop, Wii, PS3 etc. all working fine to all stations.
All software is up to date.
My airpot card is:
Airport Extreme
Firmware 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p18)

The wireless card in that iMac is not a user-installable item so Apple does not provide the instructions to access or replace that card. But you can see how to get to that card by looking at these instructions from iFixit.com

  • IMac G5 AirPort Issues - Very poor signal strength.

Disclaimer: I am normally a PC user, but just bought a iMac G5 for my son's bedroom. Problem is that I am having a **** of a time getting the iMac to stay connected to my network long enough to download a newest OS update and in general, it is very slow downloading webpages...clearly not normal...at least I hope not.
My connection is Broadband DSL to my main PC equipped with a Linksys WRT54G Broadband Router. My 2nd PC is connected wirelessly and is much further away than my iMac, but gets better reception.
Therefore, what is the deal with my iMac??? It seems to be super slow downloading the large software updates and has often timed out as they have bogged down.
As a PC guy, I am wondering is it an internal antenna issue in the iMac G5 or is it something as simple as Wi-Fi (AirPort) setting?
If is is a lousy internal antenna, what can I do to boost my signal strength? I was thinking of disabling the Wireless and buying Gaming Console access point to hard wire to the ethernet port. Is that possible? Would AirPort Express device be good for anything?
Help...I am ready to return my first Apple and go with a Dell!!!
    Solutions???

Thanks Rod. Your comments were very helpful...
Apologies for the dash of sarcasm, M., but these things usually are just that simple to get running, and your Dell jokes started me down that path you know . Yes, I should have resisted the temptation.
Screen orientation really can make a difference in a low signal situation. So can simply changing the channel on which your wireless router operates (have you tried that yet?). You also can't assume that because a computer in a neighbouring room gets gets adequate signal , the one that you are working on will too. Walls, power circuits, nearby electrical gear, etc etc can all have highly localised effects with this stuff.
If, as it appears, you have adequate signal strength (I thought you indicated initially that you didn't have) and the problem is not related to local interference on the channel which the router is using (that's why you need to try a different channel) , then its time to check other aspects of the setup, both of the router and the iMac. The problem could be caused at either end.
Lets take the router first. The WRT54G usually actually works pretty well with Macs. In some cases, however, it may need a firmware update from the Linksys site. There have been quite a few different models of this particular router produced, so you'll need to check the downloads section at Linksys support for the correct one.
The best people here to answer this sort of stuff are probably Henry B. and Frank Canzolino . They both spend much of their time over in the Airport forums. If a firmware update for the router , or a simple channel change, doesn't fix the problem then I'd try posting there with "WRT54G and iMac G5 AE " displaying in the subject line.
As far as toast goes, I personally recommend asking the power company to drop the voltage for a few minutes. Saves all that time wasted knob twiddling.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • My PC can connect to the airport extreme but with encryption it cannot connect to the internet my iMac has no issues, any help.

My PC can connect to the new airport extreme I just purchased but with encryption it cannot connect to the internet my iMac has no issues.  If I open the airport exteme up and provide no security everything is fine which leads me to believe it is something with the encryption between the two devices.  Not sure what step I'm missing here this shouldn't be this difficult.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I am asking if the DNS IP addresses, not the IP addresses assigned by the DHCP service, are the same. DNS is like the Internet's version of the Yellow Pages. Your ISP typically will provide them to you or you can elect to use those provided by another source, like OpenDNS.
DNS is the service that translates a website's URL to its actual IP address so that you can access it. I am just trying to rule out that the PC is not configured properly with the correct DNS IP information.
The other thing to check is if the PC is configured to use a Proxy service. By default, it would not be.
Finally, what is the make & model of the PC. More importantly, if the PC is using either a PCI or USB wireless adapter, what is its make & model?

  • What's wrong with the New  iMac's AirPort?

    Hello
Last night I spent 4 hours trying to connect with my brand new wireless router (Netgear DG834PN). The one time I did connect and tried to configure using Netgear's Wizard (using Safari) my Mac's AirPort Extreme dropped the connection, never to return. The next 3hrs 55mins were spent trying to to get the two devices to connect. Unsuccessfully. Very frustrating!
I even tried connecting the two devices via ethernet, and still no joy. What should I do? Is my new Mac's Built-in AirPort Extreme faulty? Is my new wireless router faulty? Any other testing suggestions welcome.
I've have read, on this forum, about possible problems with the new aluminium iMac's AirPort. Is this a known fact or just a batch issue?
*Many Thanks* (Apologies if I haven't explained myself very well, first post)
    Mike

    *Hi it's me again*
Still no joy trying to connect to my router wirelessly via AirPort.
*+(Xiaofan & Benderissimo)+* - I can't even get as far as logging into the router via a browser. AirPort literally can't see anything even thought it's switched on. This means I have no chance to change the channel or anything else. I'm stuck.
Could AirPort be locked out or something?
On the plus side I have connected to the internet via ethernet. It was no problem at all. I basically connected a length on Cat. 5 cable from port 1 at the back of the router and into my Mac, and *hey presto!* (broadband at full speed). Happy.
The thing is I eventually want to move my iMac upstairs, this is when I need AirPort wireless to start working. I don't want to trail 100ft of Cat. 5 cable all round the house.
What else can I try to make my built-in AirPort Extreme work?
    _*I'm Flummoxed, Apple help me.*_

  • 24" C2D Airport Issues

    Hi All-
I've seen many posts relating to all sorts of airport/intel problems, but none that specifically seem to duplicate my own and was wondering if anyone had any caveats aside from waiting for an update from Apple. I'm currently, and preferentially, hardwired to my home network so this is based on principle, not out of necessity. I turn on the airport card in the iMac and am greeted with 8-10 wireless networks in range- one of them being my own. Of all the networks that the iMac can 'see' I can connect to all the open networks without a problem. However my own always gets an error, "there was an error joining this wireless network." I have several other devices that connect to this network without issue (tivos, ibook, airport express, pc laptop...) and unless there is some software issue or perhaps a hardware issue with the new card in the iMacs, this doesn't make any sense. I have a westell dsl wireless router (supplied by my ISP) that is configured for MAC address filtering but is otherwise open- I'm sure that I've added the MAC addresses of the iMac! It operates @ 802.11b and g for the assorted devices and that's about all I can think at the moment in terms of setup. Thanks for any help.
    iMac 24" 2.16Ghz Intel C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have solved my problem. There is an incompatibility with all Intel iMacs with Airport cards and the Verizon Online supplied equipment, the Westell Versa Link 327W. Quoted from CNET:
"Several different wireless connection issues are plaguing users, but so far only one of the issues has a fix. If you aren't able to connect to your wireless network and you're using a Westell Versalink 327W router, then that's the problem. The Intel iMac doesn't seem to be compatible with it, so you'll need to switch to one from a different maker. An AirPort Express Base Station is pricey but will certainly do the trick"
Thanks to everyone that looked. I knew I wasn't crazy .

  • 10.5 + Rev A Intel 20" iMac = Busted Airport

Hi Chaps... I'm typing this from my kitchen, where my iMac is plugged into the modem via ethernet.
Tonight I did a clean install of Leopard, and it appears to have killed my iMac's airport. I've been using wifi fine on 10.4.x. My housemate uses wifi (and still uses it) on 10.4.9. Tonight, I installed Leopard and everything went smoothly - until I tried to configure Airport. It just wouldn't connect. Doing my usual sleuth work, i spotted this in the Console:
    When I turn Airport On:
    26/10/07 11:50:22 PM SystemUIServer[108] Error: Apple80211Scan() error -6
    26/10/07 11:50:22 PM SystemUIServer[108] Error: __performScan() failed (-6)
    26/10/07 11:50:29 PM SystemUIServer[108] Error: Apple80211Scan() error -6
    26/10/07 11:50:29 PM SystemUIServer[108] Error: __performScan() failed (-6)
When I try to connect to any network with or without encryption:
26/10/07 11:54:04 PM SystemUIServer[108] Error joining Diskonet: Connection timeout (-6 timeout connecting)
And I get this error message:
    http://users.on.net/~disko/leopardairport.png
As a troubleshooting method, I put my mac mini into target disk mode and booted from it on my iMac. It connected to the wifi perfectly and at full reception - which proves that it isn't a hardware problem.
Does anyone have any idea on how i can go about fixing this? :/

I just filed a bug on what might be a related issue. I can't connect to one of my two Apple Airport base stations. The one configured to use WEP works correctly. The one configured to use WPA won't connect with a -7 error.
Try connecting via a wire and reconfiguring the access point either as an open network or using WEP and see if the problem goes away. If so, the best I can suggest to do is to file a bug at http://bugreporter.apple.com and hope it gets fixed quickly.

  • Stream from my iMac via airport express to my Harmann Kardon AVR360

I want to stream music from my iMac via airport express to my Harmann Kardon AVR360, but without success. I'm using a mini jack -> optical adapter. Any recommendations on how to make this work?

The issue may be the adapter or cable that you are using. Since both your AirPort Express and Harman Kardon support digital audio optical connections, the simplest connection between them would be to use a cable with a 3.5 mm minijack to TOSlink optical connector on one side and a TOSlink optical connector on the other side.
I also have had scenarios where I had the right cable/connector but either the cable or connector was faulty.

  • After sleep, Pismo will not auto-reconnect to iMac's airport extreme.

I'm internet sharing with an iMac, late-2006 intel, airport extreme. If the powerbook sleeps, it will not auto-reconnect after waking. I can't even enter the password to reconnect; it displays an error message. I have to turn off-and-on the iMac's airport, and then the powerbook will connect.

    Welcome to the discussions, Dan!
If the powerbook sleeps, it will not auto-reconnect after waking.
The AirPort Extreme is "always on", there are no "sleep" related adjustments on this device. The "sleep" issue is with your powerbook or the operating system that the powerbook is using.
Suggest that you post in the PowerBook Forum for your specific question.

  • MBP Santa Rosa Airport Issues w/ Leopard

    Hi everyone,
I've noticed a few "quirks" since upgrading to Leopard. Whenever my Macbook Pro (Santa Rosa, 2.4 GHz, 17", 4GB RAM) is searching for a wireless network to join, the system becomes completely unresponsive. The mouse pointer stutters and jumps around the screen and it's impossible to precisely control its movement. When I can finally manage to click on the Airport icon in the menu bar and select the appropriate network to join, the problems stop as soon as a connection to a wireless network is established. It only happens when the system is searching for a Network. I should mention that it does this when I am at work (where I connect via 802.1x and TTLS) and at home (where I connect via an Airport Express Router).
Also, my computer no longer automatically connects to my work network (it does at home, though) after a restart or waking from sleep). I have my MBP set to prompt me for a password when it wakes from sleep, but it's near next to impossible to enter in the password because the system hangs so badly as it tries to establish a network connection. Of course, it doesn't connect unless I manage to click the Airport icon and specify the network I wish to join. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
All of this is a little frustrating since the latest updates to Airport in Tiger fixed all of the connection issues I had had previously with my MBP. When I first bought the machine I had many issues with network connections (as did many thousands of others who bought this model). I was wondering if other MBP Santa Rosa owners have observed similar behavior since upgrading to Leopard, and if so, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this issue?
I should also mention that my Mac Mini C2D 1.83GHz (latest model) has no such issues so I think this is something that is still linked to this particular model of MBP.
    Many thanks!

I am moving this over here, from the boot camp section. Hopefully this is more the location that this needs to be in. Well, my problem is not as extreme as some, but still an annoyance. I installed Leopard the first day, and immediately had HUGE airport issues. The computer would lose my hub. I run an Airport Extreme with an Express as a WDS. The computer would see the express, but lose the extreme completely. So no internet. If I messed with it long enough, I could get the computer to recognize the extreme, but as soon as the computer went to sleep, it would lose it again. I installed the keychain update, and the situation didn't get much better. Most of the time I get the "You are not connected to the Internet" error in Safari, and when I run network diagnostics the computer "finds" the internet again, and I get a "Network configuration change detected" message and all my lights go green.
After I installed the Keychain update, I repaired disk permissions. Any ideas?

  • Setup AExpress to share internet w/ iMac (internal Airport)

Thw iMac in house is sharing internet through on board airport: "House Computer" over Network Fastaccess DSL/Airport connection. Home office is in backyard and signal is weak so I bought a Airport Express.
When I run iMac's Airport Utility it sees the new Airport Express but doesn't recognize the onboard wireless signal so I can configure the AEx?? If I try to walk through the utility for the new device it won't let me?? Also it makes me turn off the internet sharing of the iMac.
The Airport Express is new (5/2010) the iMac is 2 years old and on OS 10.4...

  • Migrate from minimac (G4) to new iMac via airport extreme

I have a brand new iMac and I have the latest airport extreme.
I have my old miniMac and all are linked up through the Airport Extreme.
I want to transfer all of my old files from my G4 miniMac to my new iMac but the Migration Assistant says I have to use (buy) a firewire cable.
How do I transfer my files from my old computer (miniMac) to the new iMac via airport extreme?

sorry to say but its the firewire technique which Migration Asst. uses. It does not migrate over Ethernet.. its actually very simple...
you put your G4 into target disk mode. You put the iMac into migration asst., attach the cable and the migration (file copying) begins after you chose to proceed.
The reality is firewire is faster than most standard ethernet anyway... and wireless? it would take an extraordinary amount of time.

  • Airport issues, and "home" folder question

I'm having a problem with airport utility on my Macbook pro with OSX 10.5.3. It somehow turns itself off, and cannot be turned back on unless, the computer is restarted. Once restarted, it only stays on for a few minutes and then is turned off again. I have a time capsule, and when time machine attempts to back up, it seems to trigger it. However, even with time machine turned off, it still gets turned off. I took it to a genius bar, and the guy there seemed to think making a new account would fix it, but it didn't. It actually created another problem. He deleted my old account but saved the "home" folder. When I log into my new account, I can't access any of my music, documents, photos, etc. How do I get stuff from the saved home folder, to my new home folder???

Hey Thanks for your replies. The airport issue is being resolved. I was on the phone with applecare, and the problem was actually something with the power supply. For some reason it wasn't supplying power (or enough power) to the airport card, and that is why it would shut itself off and not turn back on. So it is being serviced right now.

  • IMac G5 Airport problem!!!

I just bought used iMac G5 1.8 GHz PPC 17", installed Panther from included CD's and noticed, that my home network doesn't show up in popup menu.
As I connect to my Netgear router wirelessly using iBook G4 with no problem, I used Ethernet cable to connect theese to computers and do all possibly necessary uptades for my iMac. Airport still couldn't detect the network. I swapped Airport cards in both computers, to check if there is no hardware failure and once again my iBook worked fine (on iMac card) connecting to the network auomatically, but on my iMac popup menu showed nothing but "other".
I tried o mess up with some settings, IPs, etc, but nothing worked.
When I type the name of network choosing "Other" it asks me for password which I don't simply have, though I don think it would make any difference if I had it or not. Problem must be in something else.
Any ideas? I would much appreciate any help.
    17" iMac G5 1.8 GHz Mac OS X (10.3.9)

"When I type the name of network choosing "Other" it asks me for password which I don't simply have, though I don think it would make any difference if I had it or not."
If your network is not encrypted you need not make any other entry besides the network name to access your network. If you are selecting an encryption type, that is a mistake, as you have no encryption (as I understand your situation).
    Edit-
As you have implied, if your network is not a closed network, the name of your network should show in your iMac's AirPort icon without having to resort to selecting "Other..."
Selecting "Other..." would be used to access a closed network that does not broadcast its own name.

  • I am unable to view ATV settings from iMac using AirPort utility

I am unable to view ATV settings from iMac using AirPort utility. Having problems with ATV quitting Airplay since recently updating.

I was interested to know if I could configure, or at least view the settings of my ATV from a Mac computer. This is because I have it connected to a projector rather than a HD TV and so it is not always convenient to view settings directly from the ATV display.
Anyway I tried finding it using Airport Utility and it does not show up (Mavericks running Airport Utility 6.3.2 on one iMac and Snow Leopard running 5.6.1 on another).
When I click on File>Connect Other it asks for an IP address and password. I doubt if knowing these would allow me to connect.
The ability view settings and configure ATV from Airport Utility would be a useful feature. We should suggest this to Apple via feedback:

  • Airport Issue After Waking From Sleep (White Unibody MacBook)

Hi all. On my new white unibody MacBook I have an Airport issue that always occurs after I wake the MacBook from sleep. I'm wondering if any of you have a similar issue and/or might not how to solve it.
Basically, when I wake the MacBook from sleep, it connects to my wireless network (and to whichever network I happen to be using at the time). A few seconds later, it will drop the connection, an exclamation mark will appear on top of the Airport icon on the menu bar, and when I click on the icon I see "Alert: No Internet Connection."
Then, if I just sit and wait, eventually Airport will connect to the network. But I have to wait -- selecting the network from the available list or turning Airport off and on doesn't help. And sometimes waiting isn't enough -- I sometimes have to go to "Create Network ..." and start all over to get a connection.
I've upgraded to 10.6.2 and the issue persists. I'd appreciate any help.
Message was edited by: Duke Spirit

My wife's Macbook has EXACTLY the same problem and I've been through dozens of suggestions trying to fix it and the problem still persists.
The problem started right after I upgraded to Snow Leopard but also installed an Airport Extreme router and WPA2 wireless encryption. I've deleted all the networks, changed the order to put the Airport as the highest preference, deleted all the keys on the keychain, ran DiskUtility, all to no avail.
I'm not sure if this is somehow related to the Airport Extreme or occurs with any router. Also, have another MacBook Pro (unibody), and it does't have this problem connecting to the same Airport Extreme.
The other factor is it is intermittent --- and doesn't always fail. Rebooting the Macbook or the router will get it to re-connect, as will shutting off and turning on the Airport several times. But that's not a solution to the problem.
Apple needs to pay attention to this as many people are now reporting the problem.
