Imac g5 ALS will not boot from internal HD or portable drive or eject disc
I cannot get my g5 ambient light sensor Imac to boot from the internal hard drive or a portable drive. I have tried multiple keystroke combinations (c + power on, option + power on, and others) upon startup and all get the same response: the computer powers on and the screen displays the apple logo. after a minute or two, the screen darkens, and a multilingual message appears telling me that I need to restart the computer. I cannot get far enough to start from a different drive or a system software disk. I cannot eject the disc currently in the drive. I cannot run any diagnostic software, cannot reinstall system software or put another disc in the drive. obviously, I am experiencing hard drive problems, but I cannot seem to get past this frustrating stumbling block. any troubleshooting or problem solving would be greatly appreciated. I have checked other discussions and support forums, but cannot find any that reference the specifics that I have mentioned. I have researched and tried the logic board check and many other potential "solutions", but none of the discussions mention the gray screen "you must restart your computer" message that I continually receive.
What you are experiencing is called a Kernel Panic.
First, to get the disc out of the drive, hold the mouse button down as you reboot.
Have you tried resetting the SMU?
1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
3. Wait 10 seconds.
4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
5. Let go of the power button.
6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
Then try booting from your install disc and running Disk Utility:
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

Setup the system fine and it all works OK.
BUT if I then try and get the iMac G5 to reboot off it's own internal HD it does not see the system.

I could not see any internal HD by starting up with 'option' held down, only the install CD (10.4 CD 1 this time).
I rebooted into 10.4 Install CD1 and Used Disc Utility .. and there was the drive, but with two partitions on it ??
I formatted the internal HD drive and made just one Partition.
I rebooted, this time to a 10.5 Installer and just get to a blue screen.
So...
Seems that HD is there and OK?
This iMac G5 does not like a 10.5 system DVD
This iMac G5 does like a 10.4 system CD set 01,02,03,04...
This iMac G5 does have a SuperDrive listed on it's foot BTW.
What next do we think... just put 10.4 on it?...

Macbook Pro will not boot from internal drive
I have a macbook pro model indentifier: macbookpro 7,1. The system would not boot what I have tried is first running apple diagnostics and all test fine, I tried booting from a snow leopard cd to re-install and it would not boot from the cd, however it does boot from the techtool pro 6 cd. I did run the test in techtool pro and all check out ok.
I removed the drive from the system and connected via usb to test and it boots fine from usb, put back internal and same result no boot. I did some research and I see that someone had a similar problem and it was the sata cable, but since the diagnostics test ok I am not sure that would be the problem.
Any Suggetions, this is driving me crazy

Bretcoffee would not HAVE to do anything except mechanically. It would not have any effect now since it has dried out, well short of corroding some components.
Check the points where the HDD casing "meets" the Macbook casing. How much pressure is there?
What about the pressure pins "pogo pins" are they all functioning?
What about pressure on the cables?

Just as the subject line says. I know this is a problem for many PPC users. I simply want to erase the HD so I can sell this Mac. In order to do that, I need to boot from an external source. I do not have the original disks that came with this system long ago. I have Panther and Leopard disks (10.5 is the terminal OS for this non Intel based Mac)... but neither of them will boot this Mac... I've tried. I've used a WD firewire drive as well as a Maxtor, but no luck. I've cloned the entire internal drive using Super Duper, with the external HD first formatted to Mac extended format. The system recognizes both drives and they even appear in the list of 'start up discs' but no matter what I choose or even 'option C' or 'command-option P-R' on start up, will not get this sucker to boot to anything else except the internal drive. The Mac also has a second internal drive, which was wiped easily. Is there any clever way I can make this work so I can erase the main drive and prepare the Mac for sale? I've researched this a lot and for some reason, many of these PPC's are fussy about what type of external drive they will boot to. My understanding is that Firewire is the only way to go. Thanks... The University recently purchased 6 brand new MAC minis for deployment in classrooms I support. I am attempting to create a dualk--boot environment comparable to our existing computer systems, only these machines wil be running MAC OS X Lion and Windows 7. After following the procedures outlined in the BootCamp on-screen prompts, and attempting a few techniques I found in the tech support user-base, I am still unable to get the MAC mini to boot up from the USB flash drive, or from an external optical drive, so that I can complete the installation of Windows 7. When using the Boot option key at start-up, all devices are displayed suggesting that they are being properly recognized, however the computer boots to a black screen with an error message indicating that "No bootable devices are found - press any key to continue." I am able to boot into the computer's internal drive, but not from any external devices. I fully expected that the semi-automated BootCamp procedure properly prepares the USB device for booting, and for installing the Windows 7 OS.
Meh, with the price they take for a drive in Denmark, I don't think it's worth it... They take around 160 $ for the drive (that's the cheapest MacBook drive I could find), and I am not even sure that's the one I need.

Imac 27 will only boot from internal and from factory install DVD?
I was trying to create a bootable external source for my iMac 27 and came across a pretty odd scenario. One that Apple iteslef says they have never seen before. Love any feedback on how to create a external bootable source. Below are my notes from the 45 minute conversation I just had with Applecare.
My iMac 27 purchased in December, 2010 Will not boot from:
Apple Factory Install DVD (white printed with Snow Leopard)
TechTool Pro 5.06 DVD
SD Card with Bootlable installation
EXT HDD with previous bootable (Leopard 10.5.9) system on it
eDrive on an EXT HDD
I had a 45 conversation with Applecare and the tech has never heard or seen a situation like this one.
Every source shows up if I hold the "option" key down upon power up.
Every source shows up in the System Prefs Startup window (though there was one oddity that he had not seen before. I have to authenticate each and every time I try to change my startup disk in the Startup Disk Prefs)
Every source other than the internal has the same result if I try to boot into it, gray screen with dark gray Apple logo, no gears running, no optical accessing, just the gray screen forever.
We reset my PRAM and tried again. No change
Then the Applecare tech had to get off the phone in order to do some further research.
He came back and we tried to startup from the DVD that shipped with my iMac, not the white factory Snow Leopard I got from Amazon, but the gray install DVD from Apple.
This one booted.
We repaired permissions and checked the internal disk from the Apple Gray Install DVD.
That is as far as the tech could go. He is sending me out a new copy of Snow Leopard, but is unable to support me in my quest to boot from an external source.
I am going to try and create a bootable external source using the gray install dvd instead of the commercial Now Leopard one and see what happens.

HenryThe point is that V.K. is correct.
You cannot create a bootable disk for your iMac from the factory Snow Leopard DVD because your machine was released after Snow Leopard was and as such relies on operating system changes and drivers that exist solely on the disc that came with your machine.
I'm really surprised if an AppleCare agent didn't know that.
To create a bootable external drive either use your Software Restore disc or create a bootable clone of your internal drive using an app like Carbon Copy Cloner. -
Mid-2009 MacBook Pro sees internal SATA hard drive, but will not boot from or format
I inherited a Mid-2009 MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53 GHz model) with a very strange issue.
It first presented itself as not being able to boot from the internal SATA hard drive that came with the computer. Nothing I tried could get it to boot, so I assumed the file system was corrupted beyond repair and booted from a CD to try to format the drive. Disk Utility on the CD would not format the drive, giving me strange error messages like "Unable to write to the last block of the device".
At this point I figured the drive itself must be toast, so I pulled it out and put another known-good SATA hard drive in, booted from CD, and attempted to format. Again, same error messages and an unsuccesful format.
So I had the bright idea of formatting one of the drives in an external enclosure and then putting it in the MBP to see if OS X would even install. No dice. Get a cryptic error message before installation even begins.
So I installed OS X on the drive in the external enclosure and put it in the MBP, and it attempts to boot, but never goes anywhere.
So to sum up, the symptoms I'm seeing:
MacBook Pro CAN see internal SATA hard drives.
MacBook Pro WILL NOT boot from any internal SATA hard drive and cannot format or install OS X to any internal SATA hard drive.
MacBook Pro WILL boot from any CD or external device and seems to work properly otherwise.
At this point I'm thinking it's one of two things: the hard drive ribbon cable or the SATA controller on the logic board.
Since the MacBook Pro seems to work completely fine other than this one issue, and will boot properly from both external devices and the CD (also a SATA device), I'm thinking and hoping that it's just the hard drive ribbon cable. From my searches online, I've heard that this batch of MacBook Pros is known to have issues with the hard drive ribbon cable, but it seems in most cases this manifests itself by the Mac not being able to see a drive at all.
I've done quite a bit of troubleshooting to get to this point, but right now I'm just looking for any feedback at all. Specifically I'd love to know a way I can easily test to see whether it's the logic board or the cable.UPDATE: An interesting development!
I just tried a third known-good SATA hard drive, one which I believe supports SATA I only (but I'm not sure), and unlike the other drives that the Mac sees but cannot properly interact with, the Mac can't even see this one when I put it inside.
Frustrating as this may be, I believe I'm actually getting closer to a solution since my symptoms now appear to be closely aligned with people having SATA ribbon cable issues.

IMac will not boot from any mode except Target Disk
I have an Early 2008 Penryn iMac 24" MB398LL/A running OS X 10.7.4 (see specs below) that will not boot from ANY mode, It also has several strange vertical bars from top to bottom on the screen. They are about 10 px wide, with some pixels empty and looks a bit like a barcode if you squint at it.
I have tried Safe Boot, Force Boot, DVD Boot, FireWire/USB Boot, and it always gets to the same point. It gets to the apple screen with the spinning gear and then after about 8 seconds it freezes. The only way it works at all is in Target Disk Mode. It pops right up on my Macbook Pro and I was able to grab all my info!
I have run Disc Utilities and Tech Tool on it many times from my MBP and it passes every test.
I reformatted the HD and installed 10.7 again, it still freezes up at the same point.
I have tried using Single User mode and every time have had to run /sbin/fsck -fy twice because it always says the disk is ok but it was modified on the first pass.
I thought maybe it had a bad video card or logic board but and I ran the Apple Hardware Test on many occasions and it always passes. Recently I was told about Loop Mode and just completed running the AHT for just over 30 hours without any errors at all.
UPDATE...
Strange Part… I tried installing Mountain Lion in Target Disk Mode and everything went smoothly. When it restarted on its own the lines on the screen were gone for the moment, but the Mac still freezes up on the spinning gear and immediately restarts on its own. I have run every thing listed above on it and still nothing. Sometimes the lines reappear then in two more starts they are gone.
I did manage to have it start one time got a copy of the the error report (its at the bottom too) The Mac ran for at least 30 minutes with no problems, then the screen went crazy a few seconds and it became unresponsive. The mouse moved but that was all it could do. Now my iMac continually restarts itself, I don't have any more ideas, HELP!

I have a mid-2010 27" Quad Core i5 iMac running 10.8.3. Startup disk recognizes the primary hard drive as a startup volume but will not boot from it. Have tried zapping PRAM, ran disk utility. No errors reported Any thoughts?
My bad Eric. The startup preference recognizes the primary as a 10.8.3 startup volume but when u select it the system does not boot. I can only boot from my external backup drive

Flat Screen imac iMac won't boot up, will not boot from DVD
My 24" imac flat screen will not boot. I only get a blank gray/white screen. Reset the PRAM and tried to boot from the DVD. I held the C key down when I powered on but the system will not boot from the DVD. If I wait long enough, the DVD will eventually be ejected. I have had HD issues and Disk Warrior indicated that the drive was damaged. Will a dead hard drive cause the system to not boot from the DVD? Is there any way to get the system to boot from my DVD?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
By what you are describing you're correct in believing your drive is probably gone. The sad news... if Disk utility can no longer see the drive, your ability to retrieve any data off of it is getting slim.
There are a couple of options for data retrieval.
1. If you still have Apple Care have them fix it. But make sure they know that you do not have a backup.
2. If you do not have Apple Care, have an Authorized Apple Tech replace the drive and make sure that they will give you back the old drive. This may prove to be a challenge. Or you can replace the drive yourself. It is not easy for some but take your time and you'll have no problems. Lots of youtube videos on this as well as on-line tutorials.
3. You could try a Hard Disk Utility program like Disk Warrior to see if it can help, but it's not free.
4. You could pay someone big bucks for Data recovery in order to get the data of the drive for you.
If you decided to do the HDD swap yourself. You could purchase a 3.5" firewire enclosure that you could put your old drive into once you do the swap. Plug it into the iMac and prey that it recognizes it. Then "MAYBE" you could copy the data over to the new drive, but that is a stretch. -
Hard disk not recognised - will not boot from cd & No FW Target Disk mode

some help would be greatly appreciated.
Some time ago i was switching internal hard drives around and wound up with a kernel panic of some sort (see my previous posts).
following on from this I have tried FW target disk mode with no success, and it will not boot from a retail Tiger install disc (this machine has tiger installed (i think!). I can't force a boot from the optical drive and i also can't even force it to eject the disc inside to try another install DVD/CD (I have panther discs lying around also).
when i start up with the c key nothing happens, but when i start up with the alt/option key i get a closed padlock symbol, password entry field and a "right facing arrow" button.
anyone got any clues with this? i'm guessing it could either and/or be an internal hard drive ribbon failure (i have swapped internal HDs multiple times in this machine, which can't be good for it) or the familiar PRAM problem (although why would it not boot from an install DVD if this was the case?). I have changed the power supply unit in the past due to having a power cable snap off inside the original one - damage to PRAM caused by this?
help would be muchly appreciated!
JesseHi, Jesse. Remove the hard drive and its cable, then see whether you can start up from a CD or DVD. If that works, replace your hard drive cable.

T500 will not boot from bootable CDs/DVDs, but will read and open files on them
System: 2 T500s, both manufactured early April 2009, win XP, ATI Radeon 3650 graphics,4GB RAM, latest Lenovo drivers installed..
Problem:- Our 2 T500s cannot boot from any windows coded recovery CD -except Lenovo's rescue/recovery discs. Some -but not all- Linux code recovery CDs do boot the T500. Every other kind of CD and DVD such as audio and video works fine in windows XP.
Here an example of our 2 T500s' failure to recognise bootable CD/DVD discs. All the files and folders on a Paragon Partition Mgr v8.5 Recovery CD can be viewed in windows explorer and files such as jpg, txt and zip can be opened. This CD will not boot the T500, however, it will boot our other -non-Lenovo- computers. The same applies when the media are DVDs with identical content.
We have tried several different kinds of CD and DVD media to no avail. Burning the media on other computers and using several kinds of burning software does not help, ourT500s refuse to boot from them too.
The problem seems clear enough, on starup our T500s fail to distinguish between windows coded bootable and ordinary CDs/DVDs -unless they are Lenovo recovery/restore discs.

A. It was` already installed on our 2 T500s. We have also applied just about every driver update from Lenovo.

A. Yes, many times from a USB CD/DVD drive, it failed too. We burned on that drive too, but the T500s will not boot from those CDs either.

A. We have used the Paragon internal ISO creator/burner, the Roxio burner that was preinstalled wth the T500, BartPE internal ISO/burner ,InfraRecorder and others too. Made ISOs and burned from them, burned CDs directly on the fly etc, all to no avail..
For some reason, our two T500s' CD/DVD drive controllers or some intermediate software act as if the CD's boot sector is not present. Clearly, something (BIOS, software, unstable hardware, or ? ) is blocking the read or write of the data necessary to boot these CDs. Whatever that 'something' is, it has no effect on burning and booting Lenovo recovery CDs.
The bizarre part of all this is that a`Lenovo recovery CD burned on the T500 drive WILL BOOT the T500. A Paragon v8.5 recovery CD or BartPE CD burned in one of our non-Lenovo computers will boot ithat and every other computer we have except our T500s.

I'm trying to upgrade to SL from Tiger but the system will not boot from the CD. It reconizes the cd And launchs giving the install option. When install is selected I get a screen with only a restart option. After restart it comes back to the original install screen. Ran disk verify which found an issue. Put the original Tiger DVD in to try to repair and I get the same thing.I have tried the following.
1) Added a new external DVD drive as I thought it could be a hardware issue with the internal drive.
2) Restart holding "c". System simply boots from the hard drive.
3) Reboot holding option key. I receive the hard drive or cd choice. select CD. It boots as normal off the hard drive.
4) Selected Boot from CD in the system utilities start menu. System still boots from the hard drive.
5) Unplugged system for a few minutes. Same thing will only boot from hard drive.
6) reboot holding command, option, P, and R keys to reset. Same thing.
7) Unplugged all peripherals, except external DVD. Same thing boots as normal from the hard drive.
Currently running 10.4.1
Note when look for updates is selected the system always says none available. Other software updates fail.

As a desperation move, you could try pulling your Hard Drive (with power OFF) to see whether you can boot from the DVD alone. It should still boot even if, when it gets there, there will be nothing to Install on.
EDIT: The theory you are testing is whether something on the Hard Drive is interfering with booting up in general. -

I used the "option key" approach with the gray start up disk. At first it ejected the start up disk. Then I nudged the disk back in the machine and it showed on the screen as an option. I clicked on the start up disk image and it finally loaded.
But, it won't accept the start up disk when holding down the "C" key at restart.

A search for the failure code 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D brought up an Apple Discussion topic entry stating: That error code indicates a problem with a thermal sensor. It could be not working or possibly not connected. You will need to take it to Apple for repair.
Would a thermal sensor have anything to do with it not starting up when holding down the "C" key at restart? What are thermal sensor problem symptoms?

I completed a DiskWarrior rebuild on the disk and verify disk shows it is fine.
