IMac G5 and a Dell 3000cn printer

I'm having problems getting my in-law's iMac G5 and a 3000cn Dell printer to connect properly. I found some info from other a couple other threads as quoted below:
Have a look at these two webpages :
http://acm.cwru.edu/pipermail/sigmac-talk/2005-February/001462.html
http://www.macosx.com/content/faq.php/q2969/Dell-3000cn-Printer.html
If I were you, I would just send back the Dell printer and get a new one. If your really want Dell, there's the 3100cn, that is Mac-compatible (because it supports Adobe's PostScript 3). But there are many other models available.
The other option, as Dell printers are simply re-branded OEM printers, would be to find the original manufacturer of the printer, and download the proper drivers for this one (if they offer Mac drivers).
and this:
The Dell 3000cn supports the PCL 5e and 6 printer control languages. Therefore, a simple way to get this printer working might be to try using the "LaserJet 6 series - Gimp-Print" driver built into MacOS 10.4.
So I got it to work printing in greyscale using the Gimp-Print method, but no color. There is no chance of returning this printer, so I need some help finding a 'fix' of sorts. (Or the direction to buy a printer if absolutely necessary)
Thanks in advance.

Make sure that your modem has an Ethernet output.
Usually the default settings of the router are all you need.
Any wireless router will do what you want.

  • Is the new imac compatible with the dell v313w printer for wireless connection?

Is the new iMac compatible via wireless connection with the Dell V313W printer?

    Hi Sara!
I got an email refering me to your post.  Ok, www.MacMall.com is a US website that sells Apple products.  I bought my iMac&printer through their website and worked with their customer service department to get my iMac communicating with the Dell V313W printer.  They have people that will take calls any time-any day at phone number 1-800-622-6255.  The other option since you are in France would be to contact a local Apple dealer...or see if they have an authorized dealer in Europe that could help.  I purchased the Apple Care Support contract with the iMac but they were unable to help since they weren't familiar with the Dell printer.
As I mentioned in my previous post the things we tried were: 1) If I remember right... I downloaded the Dell V313W printer driver from the Dell website then connected the iMac to the printer via the USB cable and established communication. I then disconnected the cable and 2) I moved the iMac and printer closer to my wireless router then 3) I turned on "Printer Sharing" on the iMac - I think this is a critical step...to do this go to System Preferences > Hardware > Print&Scan.  In the window that opens make sure the box is checked that says "Share this printer on the network" then go to the "Sharing Preferences..." box and check the "Printer Sharing" and "Scanner Sharing" boxes in the window that opens.  When I did all this the iMac went through it's routine to find the printer and the connection was finally established!
One more thing, make sure if your wireless router is locked for security that you enter the correct password when prompted...this might have been one of my problems also!
    Hope this helps.
    All the best,
    mw

  • IMac Retina 5K (2015) with 1xTDM iMac (2011) and 1x Dell External Display possible?

I have 1 x 27" iMac Retina 5K (2015), 1 x 27 " iMac (mid 2011) and a Dell P2715Q. I'd like to know if it's possible to run the 2011 iMac in Target Display Mode and my Dell as a secondary display from my 2015 iMac? My desired configuration is the 2015 iMac running two external displays. The 2015 iMac has an AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB Gfx card and both iMacs are running Yosemite 10.10.1
I have verified that running the 2011 iMac only via TDM works. Also running the Dell as an external Display only works (either at 4K resolution or the same resolution as the external iMac (2560x1440) via SwitchResX). With the Dell running @ 2560x1440, trying to put the 2011 iMac into TDM, causes a slow grey screen, then some display artefacts when coming out of TDM. Going in and out again appears to refresh the screen. But it doesn't seem to work.
I was wondering if anyone else has a similar configuration working and if so what settings or configuration changes to make?
    Thanks!

I stopped by the Apple Store yesterday, and they were nice enough to try the Screen Sharing solution with me.
Indeed, we were able to share the screen of a MacBook Pro and display it on the iMac Retina 5K over a Thunderbolt Bridge network. (should also work over WiFi)
As I expected, (based on the native resolutions) the MBP window maxed out at about 55-60% of the height and width of the 5K display.
I didn't try experimenting with lower resolutions on the 5K.
I'd actually be OK with that solution except as we increased the font sizes, (e.g. 48 pt) we noticed a *lot* of ghosting around the characters.
I will have to try it again at normal font sizes and decide if that is something I can work with all day long.
Otherwise, I am leaning towards buying last year's iMac, which kinda' grates me the wrong way.
    Thanks,
    n8

Just thought I'd point out that the D Link Shareport software is basically same as the SX link which HAS been updated:
    http://silexamerica.com/campaign/sx-virtual-link-downloads/
scroll to bottom and look for SX-Virtual Link for Macintosh
The contents of their install package is virtuall identical to the Shareport plus mac 4.30 found here:
    http://alris1.dlinkddns.com/download/dlink/SharePort_Plus/SharePortPlus_V430R1_1 21026_Mac.dmg
EXCEPT that they tellingly have a driver labeled 10_9
    which is probably mavericks.
the shareport version only has 10_3 10_4 and 10_6

  • Acrobat 9 Pro - Slow Printing Problem on Dell 3000cn

I have just downloaded Acrobat 9 Pro as a trial, I want to buy it but not if this problem continues - maybe there is a fix??
I have Acrobat 9 Pro installed on my local machine and I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. I have a networked (through a server) printer it is a Dell 3000cn that I print several emailed PDF files on everyday. Since downloading this new program (it required me to remove all other versions of Adobe prior to install - which I did) it seriously takes 2 minutes from when I hit the print button to actually open the printer selection screen. Once I have selected the printer (in this case it is the 3000cn - it is the only color printer) it takes another 2 minutes to actually print the document. Normally I wouldn't be bothered by a process taking so long but I have to do this with an average of 20-30 documents per day (which means that I end up spending around 1 1/2 hours trying to print).
I have combed through the forums here and can't find anything that helps my specific problem. I have checked with Dell and they say that the printer does not have a PostScript driver (which I have read may help my problem)...
    Any ideas??

Make a local printer your DEFAULT and see if that helps
I only use a local printer (with version 8x) so didn't keep the link, but there is previous discussion about problems if you don't have a local printer as default... and, if I remember correctly, a link to download a "dummy" printer driver which you may install and set as default

  • I'm trying to install a dell 2130cn printer driver on my brand new iMac (2012). I'm an Apple newbie.

I just switched from PC to Apple (Ipad, Iphone and now Imac). my legacy printer is a Dell 2130cn color laser printer that I would hate to replace. I've tried the advice on the web involving downloading 3 Linux packages (pxlmono, Foomatic and Ghosecript) but ai think this only works for earlier versions of the imac.  any advice, including 'ditch the printer' would be helpful.

First comment to make is that Steve Jobs and Michael Dell were not really on the best of terms :-)
Next comment is that on this Dell support page http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?docid=26 6268#Issue0_5 there is a long list of printers and a very small number of them do list Mac drivers. Your printer is listed a good ways down, but sadly is not one of the ones with Mac support.
Third comment is that someone said Lexmark makes Dell printers, so if you can visit that site and stumble upon a picture of a Lexmark that looks like yours, the drivers might work if they are Apple compatible.

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.
