IMac G5 boots, and then goes to black screen

This is not my iMac, but a friend who is using this that she got from here son who upgraded to an Intel iMac. The hardware is a G5 20 iMac. I don't have any more information since it wont power on....or have the installation disks...
The symptoms are that the machine will power on, "bong" show the blue apple screen, then the spinning lines and then suddenly a black screen and nothing more. I booted to single user via Command-S and ran fsck to ensure the disk was clean. Ir reported no errors, but halfway through the check the fans came on full. Only having experienced an Inetl iMac's fans, they were very load. When the fsck finished (with no errors) the fans turned off again. When i exitied the shell to reboot, the same thing happened again. Black screen and not repsonse.
The fact that I can get to single user shell and check the disks points to most of it working, but I'm confused as to why it gets no further.
ANy help would be appreciated as she want to migrate from her current PC based workflow to a more reliable(!) one, but this isn't helping....
Thanks,
Jimmy

Thanks to the responders for their input. I was fearing the worst. However, it looks like the issue wasn't as serious as a broken capacitor. I don't understand why the following worked, as it's not as if the machine was always not working, but just started.
As part of the diagnostic process, the back was opened and then the memory reseated. After reboot this still failed. Then Command Option O F to get into open firmware and then
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all
and the machine rebooted and came up again.
So far there have been no problems, but it looks like this was the fix.

  • My screen on the imac starts to load then goes to black screen when turned on

how do I reboot my desktop as when it turns on it starts to  load then it goes to a black screen

I had the same issue with my 2008 iMac and Apple support walked me through a fix ...
    1. Shut the computer down by holding the power button for 10 seconds
    2. Restart the computer and press shift at the same time until you see the progress bar start moving
    3. Once you reach the point where your screen goes dark and you see the cursor, type the first letter of the username for your computer, then hit Enter, then type your password, then hit Enter.
    4. After a moment, you should see the spinning beach ball
    5. Your screen should then move on to something along the lines of "Completing OSX Installation" (I can't remember the exact wording). Let it finish. After that it should go to your normal desktop and the issue should be fixed. (If your screen goes pitch black during this process, hit the space bar. I thought it wasn't working, but the screen was just sleeping).
Apparently it's an issue with an automatic update that never quite got past the login screen.
If this doesn't help then try reinstalling whatever version of OS X you are using.

  • Computer freezes and then goes to blue screen and resets (flash player 10.1)

I have tried to install and reset my Internet explorer several times and still have the same result, my computer freezes and then goes to blue screen and resets. I am running windows 7 64 bit and windows Internet explorer 8. I have tried to go through the adobe trouble shooting and end up with the same problem. Does anyone have an idea were to go from here, this is getting very frustrating.

Do you use the 32-bit version of IE8?

  • MDD boots and then goes to sleep immediately

have a dual gig MDD and suddenly the thing just started going to sleep or powering down right after booting up.
i've taken everything out and unplugged eveything to bring it back to it's intial state; i've zapped pram; i've pulled the battery; nothing seems to help.
with the hardware cd as the boot, i get the following
    Invalid memory access at %SRR0: 00034870 %SRR1: 00003030
    USB Setup Error: 40140000 400001
    bad Bus info CRC-16
    Apple PowerMac3,6 4.4.8f2 BootROM built on 09/30/02 at 10:24:31
which made me think it might be one of the RAM sticks. so i've puleld them, tried with just one and still nothing, swapped sticks, no go. with the cd in, when it goes to sleep, upon waking i get:
    Decrementer exception at %SRR0: 056106dc %SRR1: 00003030
at first i thought it might be the boor drive but since booting from the CD still causes the problem, my guess is the MoBo.
if anyone can help me out, maybe something i've missed so i dont have to spend $500 on a new MoBo, i would be very grateful

An overheating proc can definitely make the thing go to sleep. But I don't know what would make the fan power stop working. I believe that's controlled by the PMU, but you've reset that.
I've seen some pretty strange PMU-related behavior, so nothing would really surprise me. Just today, I found that my firewire ports weren't working - they'd power peripherals, but I couldn't get either of my FW drives to show on the desktop. I booted to two different internal drives and had the same problem. I reset the PRAM, NVRAM, and the PMU and no improvement. Finally, I unplugged the PRAM battery, hit the PMU reset button, and let it sit an hour before plugging it all in again and viola - firewire worked!
It might seem redundant, but if I were in your shoes, I'd unplug that PRAM battery again, hit the reset button, leave it out for a couple of hours, and then plug it all in again to be absolutely sure. Also, be sure never to press the PMU button twice between starts.

    Hi daveormond,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iMac. If you continue to have issues with your Mac shutting down part way through the boot up process, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following articles helpful (given your description, it sounds like it could be either issue, or a combination of both):

  • Bb9860 boots upto 75% and then goes white screen plz help.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Please try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h15m process, your BB must remain directly connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB, not a cradle):
With the battery inside, connect your BB to the wall charger
Leave it alone for 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
    Remove the battery
    Wait 15 minutes
    Insert the battery
Wait another 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
This has been known to "kick start" some BBs.
It is also possible that your battery or BB has experienced a problem...to test, this sequence is needed:
Obtain an known good and already fully charged additional battery...use it in your BB and see what happens
Obtain access to a known good and identical BB...use your battery in it and see what happens
The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem. Note carefully please that "new" and "know good" are not necessarily the same things. While rare, a "new" battery certainly could be defective. Rather, the simplest (and least costly, btw) method to conduct this test is to find someone with an identical BB who has no issues...trade batteries and see what happens.
Good luck and let us know!

When I open my Macbook pro- the screen lights up and then goes black- keybook stays backlite- can not get screen to come back on. Must reboot-
thoughts-?? Macbook is 6 months old and on second hard drive ( failure after 45 days).

Hey! exact same thing happens to me... I use the keyboard shortcut to turn off the screen which is ctrl - shift - eject button. Then just poke a key and it wakes up again fine, it doesn't fix the problem but at elast you don't have to reboot. x

  • Screen flashes and then goes black after CPU load

Yesterday morning I upgraded my MacBook Pro 6,2 (Mid 2010) to OS X Lion. Since then I've been having issues while performing CPU-not-too-intensive tasks. Every once in a while my screen flashes for a split second and then turns completely black. The MBP is unresponsive so I'm forced to shut it down using the power button.
At first i though this was a Lion issue. However, it has happened again just now while I was on Windows through BootCamp. I was checking my e-mail and performing some other mundane tasks for about an hour, and then while trying to copy some files to an external Hard Drive my screen flashed and went black.
    Hardware issue then??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's already happened 4-5 times right when I pressed Cmd+D to bookmark a site on Safari. What the heck? That isn't even a CPU load.

My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?
I have a two and half year mac book pro... I've had some issues with the screen looking scrambled when I quit certain applications, but now it's turned into something worse.  I'll be working on my computer and the thing will freeze.  When I force restart, the first screen, the apple logo, will be a blue tint and won't boot up normally.  Then I try safe mood and it will then boot just fine.  But there are blue stripes on my screen.  The screen alternates from a blue tint to normal and if the computer freezes again the screen will become completely blue with black stripes.  I haven't tried reinstalling my software because I don't have the startup discs that came with my computer.  If I was sure that would fix it I would purchase them, but if it's a hardware issue I'm afraid that I'm screwed.  I've been able to successfully get the blue off my screen by putting it to sleep and then waking it up, but that's not working well anymore either.
Does anyone else have experience with this?  Is it the firmware or what?  I have a MacBook Pro from early 2011 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    Please help... Thanks!

I just experienced this exact same issue with my early 2011 15" macbook pro. Since like a month after purchasing it I had issues with the screen randomly going dark on me. I sent it in for repair inder waranty they replaced the gpu and logic board but I continued to have the same issues with the screen randomly going black sometimes I would need to reboot it in order to get the screen to go back on but it happened so infrequently and I used the computer for school so disnt find the time to resend it in to apple. Just last night the screen started to display the blue screen with black verticle lines on it. I called apple and explained to them  the issues that had been ongoing since I purchased the laptop but they said because I was now outside of warantee that any repairs at thia point wouldn't be covered. Fml so glad I spent 2200 on this future proof macbook pro what a joke my sister purchased a toshiba laptop for 300 4 years ago and it still running like a champ. I loved my macbook but at the price I paid I expect it to last longer than 2 years before leaving me high and dry. *** apple??

  • Long tone on start up and then goes into open firmware

I stumbled upon the older posts here and thought I'd add a solution.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6115258
It was about an emac starting up with a long tone and the led flashes a few times and then goes into Open firmware, and when doing "mac-boot" in open firmware, it attempts to start, shows the apple symbol, the screen goes dim and crashes.
It could be a bad power switch. To confirm - you can remove the emac case, be careful not to touch the motitor's picture tube. Find the cable to the power switch; with a small wire just touch together the black and red wires on the power switch cable (or it might be red and green). This will start the emac. If it boots up and runs OK then the power switch was bad. Not sure where to buy a new switch. I soldered and glued my switch together.

Or, you'll find both the short pigtail-cabled nVidia graphics driven power switch and the version with a longer cable used with the AIT graphics driven models here* for a good deal less.
Note that the later ATI version can actually be used with either product generation.
