IMac G5 crash n burn
Hello,
My wifes iMac G5 froze and now it won't start up. She has tried all the methods in chapter 5 (troubleshooting) up to the point of the Reinstalling Software section.
I can not convince her she will not loose any data but because it cleary states there is a possibility she has cold feet.
So, because I am not savy with the iMac G5 running Tiger 10.4.? (I use the question mark because she isn't quite sure what it is) I do know she upgraded with the last software updater release.
Anyway, I have an Imac G4 flatpanel running 10.3.9. Do these two machines work the same way, in that verifying permission, etc and reinstalling software are the same. It reads like it is. But I want to be sure.
The crash happened when I went to downlaod Garge Band file into her hard drive from my iMac (we are networked) while I was doing that at the same moment she was launching Garage Band.
I got the message window that pops up when you click connect to server viz the finder folder, and as I was realizing it wasn't letting me in, she yelled out "Oh man my computer froze"
So anyway whats the safest and quickest way to get her back up running. I want to just reinstall the software and call it a day. But because she doesn't want to loose or risk loosing any files she had created this morning (she simply didn't have time to back anything up, the work was that new) what can I do to help her get back up and running?
Sincerely,
Robert
thanks myhighway,
was able to get rebooted. its been a very long time since i have had to mess around with this stuff. totally drew a blank. i guess wheni read the word MATSHIT i was like what?
anyway, we took it into the only apple certified place to fix it but upon waiting for the work the guy walks out and says "I can't seem to get the printer to work to print out your work order"
so at this point i am thinking. ok you can't even network a printer or get one to work but i am supposed to leave a computer with you that if you can't get runnin i will be possibly sleeping in the dawg house? naw i don't think so.
so we brought it back home and re set it up. this time i incerted techtools (forgot i had it) still didn't recognize it so i shut it down n rebooted with the installation disc. opened the terminal function got the window open and for some reason decided to scratch that approach.
went back into the installation part of the cd. 99% through the process it gave me the "try restarting again, there was an error installing the software"
so i reboot again. this time i go into the disc utility. and it let me repair disc and the permissions (at this point im thinkin 'ok its found a drive)
then i rebooted. what seemed like eternity it came up. so i take back everything i said. i still love apple
i reckon watching my new bride so upset not having her machine i was getting very upset.
so it appears all is well

Brand new iMac 24" crashes and burns playing games in bootcamp
If this continues I guess I will have to call support but for those that are interested here is the story:
I have a 24" iMac 3gig and I have installed bootcamp - although I am not convinced as to how well this worked with the driver install as I have problems pairing my bluetooth mouse and keyboard in windows - works fine in OS/X.
If I play WoW in OS/X it seems to handle this. I currently bought Warhammer Online which is PC only so I put it into my bootcamp partition. It runs absolutely fine until it gets hot and then it quite happily brings the machine down.
Symptoms.
wireless networking stops
bluetooth becomes unreliable even when rebooted into OS/X
System crashes and screen goes black - no repsonse or anything
I find this worrying as such occurences cannot be doing my system any good.
I installed fan control and tried upping the fans and my ssytem is now a little noisy but it still happens.
After spending so much money on what is touted as a robust and performant system I am very disapointed. It seems despite controlling and selecting hardware Apple are no better than PC manufacturers. Except prettier
Message was edited by: PyroluxConsumer ? The top end iMac ? Certainly my local shop has a different definition of consumer. Agreed the Mac Pro is HIGH performance and also a high price.
For most of my needs I am happy with the Mac, a little disapointed with boot camp but that is all. Not just the game, but also the bluetooth keyboard - just can't get it to work. Works perfectly in OS/X which I guess is the main thing.
Only real niggle in OS/X is the mighty mouse seems to be a bit sporadic with the right click. Works for a time and then doesn't. Very annoying, mainly becuase when it is working properly it is brilliant - so infuriating when it doesn't.
Still - early days yet, and still learning - so hopefully I will sort everything out to my satisfaction. -
Follow Up to iMac G5 Crash n Burn
If you go here you will read of an issue my wife was having.
We thought it was resolved and this is a follow up to that/those issues.
In the end it was a defective hard drive. Which Apple replaced after confirming what Diskwarrior® had identified after the multiple days of running the application. Just goes to show though Diskwarrior never gives up!
That was the first time an Apple product gave me such a hard time and I been using nothing but Macs since I was a teenager (graduated in 1983)
Anyway, the cable to the logic board was not set properly either. So after I installed the new hard drive I did have to take it into the shop (in order to maintain the warranty) and have it set properly.
It left me wondering if the wife really needed a new hard drive. What if it was the cable to the logic board?
The Apple rep, was convinced it was the hard drive and we swapped the old one for the new one with no probem. I just wonder though. Would have been something good to know.
Anyway just wanted to follow up on the thread I posted. The new drive whistles along and the wife is happy.
Peace,

Troubleshooting help needed: My iMac keeps crashing and restarting with a notice: "Spinlock application timed out" What can I do?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports. -
My iMac just crashed, and I had some documents open in Pages that were unsaved. Is there a temporary file or backup file that I can access as on a PC? (I have just looked in Timemachine which I had operating, but it did not seem to have any temp files in it at all - not sure what it would be useful for then).
Any suggestions?Question asked and answered several times.
If you didn't save, nothing is recoverable.
iWork apps don't create temp files so, as far as you on't save something, Time Machine can't archive it.

<Edited by Host>And what is wrong with Trend Micro Titanium as a package?
1. This comment applies to malicious software ("malware") that's installed unwittingly by the victim of a network attack, and what you should and should not do to protect yourself from that threat. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
If you find this comment too long or too technical, read only sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user, but internally Apple calls it "XProtect." The malware recognition database is automatically checked for updates once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
For the reasons given above, App Store products, and other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. OS X security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they're not absolute protection. The first and best line of defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the malware attacker. If you're smarter than he thinks you are, you'll win.
That means, in practice, that you never use software that comes from an untrustworthy source, or that does something inherently untrustworthy. How do you know what is trustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
Pirated copies or "cracks" of commercial software, no matter where they come from, are unsafe.
Software of any kind downloaded from a BitTorrent or from a Usenet binary newsgroup is unsafe.
Software that purports to help you do something that's illegal or that infringes copyright, such as saving streamed audio or video for reuse without permission, is unsafe. All YouTube "downloaders" are in this category, though not all are necessarily harmful.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. If it comes from any other source, it's unsafe.
Even signed applications, no matter what the source, should not be trusted if they do something unexpected, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it — not JavaScript — in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Follow the above guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself from malware.
7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good, if they do any good at all. Any database of known threats is always going to be out of date. Most of the danger is from unknown threats. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free anti-virus products in the Mac App Store — nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial "anti-virus" products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. Most of the real-world danger of malware attack comes from highly targeted "zero-day" exploits that are not yet recognized.
By modifying the operating system, the software itself may create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
8. An anti-malware product from the App Store, such as "ClamXav," doesn't have these drawbacks. That doesn't mean it's entirely safe. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An anti-virus app is not needed, and should not be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful only for detecting Windows malware. Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else.
A Windows malware attachment in email is usually easy to recognize. The file name will often be targeted at people who aren't very bright; for example:
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!!!!!!!H0TBABEZ4U!!!!!!!.AVI♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.exe
Anti-virus software may be able to tell you which particular virus or trojan it is, but do you care? In practice, there's seldom a reason to use the software unless a network administrator requires you to do it.
The ClamXav developer won't try to "upsell" you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
10. As a Mac user you don't have to live in fear that your computer is going to be infected every time you install an application, read email, or visit a web page. But neither should you have the false idea that you will always be safe, no matter what you do. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices. -

my iMac has crashed...was told I need a new hard drive.....meantime I bought a mac mini.....I had an external drive connected to the mac....and was using time machine for backups....so....how do i move itunes music files to my new mac mini from the external drive?
Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source volume. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the access list. Give yourself read access if you don't already have it. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane. -
That's right... this flagship of prime and lovable software goes crashing and burning every time I try to use my favorite plugin. It works just fine in CS5! I've tried contacting the developers and everyone to know avail. Can someone at the lovable Adobe help me with this issue!?

2 of my computers have crashed and burned in the last week. One of them was my main computer for itunes. i have 2 issues:
1) i need to deauthorize the other 2 computers in order to authorize my new one.
2)how do i move all of my music etc to the new computer?
thank youThanks much, that's very helpful for step one (getting old phone onto new phone). Very clear.
However, I still have the problem of moving to the new computer. How do I move the sync to the new computer after the new phone is set up? -
Intel iMac 17'' Matshita DVD Burning extremely slow!
It seems i'm not the only one complaining about this problem:
I just bought a new iMac Intel 17'', just to discover it would only burn at speed 2x, instead of 8x as advertised. Yes, I have read all the advice about picking good media. The media I'm using is perfectly functional, and there's no reason why a drive wouldn't write on it at the right speed, unless the drive was of really bad quality.
How can it be that we buy such expensive computers, and are given the cheapest DVD Burners Apple could lay their hands on?!I recently discovered that the Memorex DVD-R 8X media I've been using for months would only burn at 2X speed. I too was upset by this. I think my old G4 iMac was doing 4X burns. So I went looking for answers and kept coming across consistent suggestions of "try different media." I recently ran out of the Memorex media so I looked closer and followed this link <http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm> and found Memorex poorly rated. I bought TDK DVD-R 16X media today (for 25% less than I paid last time for Memorex) and my iMac is cooking away happily at 8X burn speed now.
My suspicion is that there is a great deal of empirical data to support lower burn speeds for some media in order to reduce the number of "coasters." After all, I want a reliable burn first and speed second. I bet the firmware in many drives looks at the media ID of a disk and throttles the speed to achieve the primary goal at the expense of the secondary.
BTW, the way to check media ID for yourself is to open a terminal window and enter "drutil status" with a disc inserted. -
IMac will not release burned CD
I burned several CDs consecutively in my iMac. When I burned the last one, it would not release it. The CD icon no longer shows up on screen. The eject button will not work. How can get it out?
Were you able to restart the computer, and hold the mouse down while it starts?
That is the most common way to try and get a media or system disc to eject if
the other expected way fails to produce results.
Another may be to be sure user permissions are corrected (disk utility> repair
disk permissions) and other basic maintenance is done on a preventative basis;
another idea may be to attempt random voodoo effects on startup, though I do
not know if things - such as resetting the PRAM on startup - could help in this.
If the optical drive has failed, that is another matter. And if nothing else you
can try does work, research this issue further before trying to use a PMU reset. -
IMac (Intel) Crashes
My IMac (Intel) crashes when I am playing zanga games on facebook. Last time took me 9 times of rebooting to get it going. Anyone else having this problem. I am running 10.4 Tiger.
Try resetting your browser, that may help. (Safari) click the Safari menu item the select Reset Safari.

DVDSP 4.0.3 crashes on Burn. Please Help!
I using FCP 5.0.4 and DVDSP 4.0.3. Burning discs has never been a problem (exporting from FCP via compressor to video .m2v and audio .ac3).
Now, after I've assembled my project in DVDSP (buttons, track linking etc) and I press the burn button (which I've done successfully many, many times) the program crashes.
I've tried burning with toast but found this to produce unacceptable results.
I've tried deleteing prefs, running disk utility, creating different projects etc but it still crashes on burn.
The only solution seems to be to make a disc image in DVDSP and burn it with disk utility.
Please help as this seems to make DVDSP not fit for the purpose. Is this an issue with the 10.5.6 update? Will it be fixed with 10.5.7?
Or do I have to go out a shell £3000 for a new machine and Final Studio 2?
I have some important projects that use about 60 tracks to finish so I really need a solution to this problem.
Thanks in advance for your help.
