IMac G5 disk drive won't "swallow" disks

I tried to put a DVD in today and where it usually just swallows in the disk the disk just stays there. I don't really know what to do, i tried restarting and using other disks but still the same problem.

Could there be one stuck in there already?

  • My disk drive won't accept disks at all, not even a little to spit them out.

My disk drive will not accept disks at all...there is no disk stuck in there, but nothing happens when I try to insert a disk into my disk drive.
The disk won't even go in the drive a little bit...it's like something is blocking the drive, but I know nothing is in there.
Any ideas on what this may be or what to do to correct it?

It sounds like the lens on your optical drive is dirty. Use a cleaning DVD or wrap a microfiber cloth around a credit card and carefully slide it in and out a few times.

  • Disk drive won't read disks

    Hi there,
I've had my Mac Mini for several months, and starting fairly recently, it only reads about 1 out of 5 disks I put in on the first try. It accepts the disk and sounds as if the laser is about to move to read it, but then the lazer gets stuck. I can hear the motor working to try and move the lazer, but again, it seems to be jammed. After about 30 seconds of it trying to read the disk, it gives up and ejects the CD.
As a note, I've been able to read music CD's, burned CD's, and installation CD's for software before, but more and more frequently it doesn't read the disc.
Thanks for any and all help.

Hmm...not sure if this was the proper forum. Sorry if it isn't.
    Thanks.

  • Imac dvd drive won't accept disks

My iMac's dvd drive won't let me insert any disks. It feels like there's something blocking the way in. The eject button on my keyboard doesn't seem to be working either – usually the dvd drive makes an 'ejecting sound' when the button is pushed, even when there's no disk. I've also tried some disk ejecting tricks found in this community. The dvd drive seems to be responding to nothing...

    Try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
No guarantee this will work but it's a start.

  • I have lightroom.  My photos are stored on an external disk drive with a backup disk.  With iCloud, will all of my photos go to the cloud?  Will I still need the external drives? Is the $9.99 per month for just one year or for always?

If the iTunes database files are on that drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key(Windows) or Option key(Mac OS X) held down, select Choose Library, and navigate to it. The computer may need to be authorized to play protected content, and if the library contains rented movies, those won't play.
If not, import the content to an iTunes library.

  • DVD drive won't read disks at boot

    I have a Paviliton DV6-2113sa running Win7 HP  64bit.
I removed Acronis True Image and when I rebooted I got a BSOD at the point when the coloured balls should merge into one.
I thought OK, put the system repair disk into the DVD drive and boot up, but the drive is failing to read any recovery dosks. I think the drive has packed up as I haven't used it for some time.
Can I use any replacement drive in this model or must I get the same one again?
The drive light flickers as though it is reading data but it doesn't 'spool up' to speed and I don't get the 'press any key to load from DVD'.
The BSODs are a seperate issue which I think running a system repair will fix but I can't as the drive won't read data.
Is it possible to put the repair disk files onto a 4gb USB stick and if so, how do I do it?
    Thanks.

    Hi Peeps
I had exactly the same problem with my Macbook, again from the UK. Really weird though as would intermittantly read DVD film's which worked fine previously.
Well.... Took it to my local Apple store and saw a genius and anyway they replaced the super drive and logic board (surprised about the logic board!).
But just got it back today and the DVD drive is completely fubard so is being returned tomorrow to get this sorted!
Moral of the story, sounds like a drive or board problem. Will keep you updated when I get mine back

  • DVD drive won't accept disks

Today I tried to put in a DVD R to burn files and I realized that my Disk drive seems to be completely dead. It won't suck in DVDs. I hadn't used it for a while and I just noticed this today. The only noise it makes when starting the computer but otherwise it seems completely dead. Is there any diagnostic tool that I can run since I can't even put a Disk in the drive ?
It's a 2011 13 inch MacBook Pro running OSX Lion.
    Thanks

Have you inserted the disc far enough for the motor to suck it in? It needs to be pushed in pretty far.
Otherwise your drive has died. At least the motor used to draw the disk in has.

  • The disk drive won't spit the cd out of the drive? What do i do?

I was watching a movie and ejected the movie and it wouldn't come out. It sounds like tries then it dies. It does this for about four to five times; and it does this everytime i open or turn on my computer. What can i do, if there is anything i can do without buying aa new disk drive.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Have you closed the app you were using to watch the DVD?
If so, hold down the trackpad (or hold its left button) while your MacBook is starting. This will force the SuperDrive to eject the DVD.
If it doesn't work, hold Command and S keys while your Mac is starting to start up in single-user mode, and type:
    drutil eject && exit
There are other methods, but they won't work if these ones didn't do the trick. In this case, take the computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get your disc drive replaced, or get an external DVD drive

  • Disk Drive won't open: Root Cause

I've seen several posts here and elsewhere on why the DVD/CD drive won't open/eject on the Mac Pro or Macbook. Pressing the keyboard button doesn't eject it, and neither do any terminal commands. After banging my head against a wall I found the cause: VMWare Fusion had "mounted" the DVD-drive so the Mac thought the drive was terminally "busy". If you have Parallels, the same may be happening to you as well.
P.S. I suspect a similar thing may be happening with my external hard drive, which I have set up as my Time Machine drive. I periodically get a message that Time Machine encountered an error but no details. The drive may be hijacked by VMWare when Time Machine tries to access it...

VMware can grab USB devices too. It's a good idea to make sure your VM's aren't set to attach the cd/dvd drive automatically when they start.

  • My iMac's cd drive won't read blank discs please help!!!

    iMac mid 2011.
processor: 2.7 GHz intel core i5
    memory: 8 gb 1333 mhz DDR3
    startup disk: macintosh hd
    [Running OS X Lion (10.7.2)]
My disk drive wont read blank cds. Please help!!!

As reported elsewhere, my problem is with a conflict from Western Digital software used during
Time Machine backups.   It won't detect blank media and when inserted will not eject until you shut down and restart.
Problem is resolved by dragging WD program to trash.
CD's will now work for burning disks.
Drag back WD software when finished.
    Works for me?
Western Digital offer a fix but haven't tried it.

  • Disk drive spits out all disks!

My drive won't accept any kind of disk anymore, it just spits them out after a few seconds. This happened over night. Maybe some dirt got in through the slot or something? Is there anything I can do besides getting an external drive of some sort?

Have you tried resetting the pmu? It is kind of a catch all, resets the powerbook and hardware to default settings? Check out apple's support page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

  • CD/DVD drive won't load disks...is it dead?

The HL-DT-ST DVDRW  GA11N drive had always worked with no problem. There was a CD I left in it (without playing) for a couple of months, and when I tried to eject it, the drive kept trying but it would not eject - - a tiny bit of the edge would peek out momentarily, but then it would get sucked right back in, after which the drive would spin up and the disc would reappear in the Finder. After repeated attempts to eject it (including using Finder, iTunes, and Terminal, and restarting the iMac), I was finally able to grab hold of the tiny bit that showed on one eject attempt and forcibly pull it out. That may have been a mistake.
Now, attempting to insert another disk results in absolutely no reaction. It will not trigger whatever is supposed to sense a disc is trying to be inserted. Is the drive dead? Am I pretty much screwed and left with no choice but to hook up an external drive or take my iMac to the Apple Store (where it is out of warranty, of course). I cannot find any way to test or check the status of the disc drive in the built-in disc diagnostics.

I don't really see how that could be the problem -- a) because it was the latest TurboTax disc I was trying to load, which should be compatible with everything, and b) how could the drive possibly know what kind of disc it is if trying to insert the disc doesn't even activate the loading process?
The disc that wouldn't come out was somebody's privately made audio CD, so yes, that could have been a problem (though it didn't have a paper label). But the problem now is that no matter what disc I attempt to insert, I push it in to the point where it meets resistance and nothing at all happens.

  • CD/DVD Drive won't mount disks

My Mac Mini (early 2009) won't seem to mount any disks. I have tried recordable DVDs I recorded a while ago and shop bought DVDs also pre recorded CDs. Just whirrs a bit and then ejects.
It will mount a blank DVD, but that is all.
I tried recording something to the disk and got an error 0x80020022. I have seen others with this error code but it usually seems to affect recording not actually mounting a disk. I get not error message at all when attempting to mount a disk.
    Any ideas?

Sounds like the ODD is shot. If it is under warranty call Apple Care. (I hear that by law you actually get two years in the EU.) If not, you may need to get an external drive or pay for someone to install a new internal drive.

  • CD/DVD drive won't pull disks in?

I've had a look round the forums here and some of the troubleshooting guides but nothing has come up specifically like this.
my macbook won't pull any disks into its drive. I insert the disk in the slot most of the way and then it will grab it, but then it doesn't pull the disk all the way in. There is always a small bit of the disk still sticking out of the slot, barely enough to grab and pull out when I see that its stuck. after reading the 'mini disk' topic I'm wondering if a less considerate member of my family may have stuck something similar in there, but unlikely. I think that this is most likely a problem with the drive itself, perhaps something has weakened the mechanism?
thanks for any help, I've spent ages searching through the site to find a way to contact an apple representative via email (I'm at work so don't want to phone) but its like a maze, they only seem to have a query form for .mac stuff, iPod~Tunes etc. I sound like such n00b :S

Same thing is happening to me. Did you get yours resolved? If so what did you do to fix it?

  • CD/DVD drive won't accept disks

I have an iMac G5, 1.8 GHz, which is about 2 years old. Just today I have discovered that I cannot insert a CD or DVD into the drive. When I try to insert a disk, it doesn't get "grabbed" and just sits there in the slot inertly. Anyone ever have this problem and know what can be done about it?
I have burned many a CD on this computer and have never encountered this problem.
