IMac G5 ejects software discs before loaded

I tried to load new software, but the disc drive (while it sounded like it was working) ejected the disc automatically. I've also had trouble getting the iMovie to multiplex while burning - it keeps ejecting because of an error. Don't know if the 2 are related, but it appears there are problems with the disc drive. Any suggestions?

What is the model of your iMac? Could be that the optical drive is failing, if you are technically inclined, you can replace it, if not, contact [synaptech.com] for help.

    • Material used: Video-Codec and Photo file format and Audio file format - matters too. I use
    - Video - StreamingDV .dv or AIC
    - Photos as .jpg (only)
    - Audio as .aiff 16bit 44.1kHz or 48kHz (ONLY - never .mp3 or directly from iTunes - all converted to .aiff first)
With this I do not mean any setting in iDVD - BUT the raw material used in iMovie / FinalCut / Avid 100 / Adobe Premiere
As this usually matters - later in iDVD
How did You Export from Video-editing program used ? I prefer
    • iMovie HD6 - just drop the movie project icon (NOT iMovie Icon - the PROJECT one) over into iDVD big menu window (avoiding - drop-zones as they are for other tasks)
    • iMovie'08 to '11 - Share to MEDIA BROWSER - AND AS MEDIUM - not HD or other resolution as iDVD does a bad downscaling job.
    • iMovie'13 (version 10.0.x) - Share as 480p - Import this into iDVD
    • FinalCut (Pro or Express) - Export as QuickTime .mov - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - IMPORTANT
    • Adobe Premiere - I don't know - not tested Yet
    • Avid 100 - I don't know - not tested Yet
Cleaning the DVD-burner - If it Burns DVDs OK then that's may be not the problem - But if it only burns CDs OK then either the DVD-burning-laser is dirty or broken.
It is very easy to kill this DVD-laser as it over-heats if one burns several DVDs in a row. I only burn three at a time - then let it cool down for 30 minutes till next batch of three DVDs.

my imac keeps ejecting my discs, wont burn anything either

Are these CDs? DVDs? or both?
Have you tried using a different brand of disks? Some work better than others.
Does it eject all disks or only some? Only blank disks or some that have already been made? Commercial disks or burned?

  • IMac Drive Ejects Software CD

My Intel 2008 iMac desktop ejects a new H&R Block tax software CD. It works fine for another data CD I have and will play a DVD. It worked last year on a TaxCut CD. I restarted the computer and also did a restart and "zapped the PRAM." What is going on? Did not help Could the software CD be defective?
    Thanks.

The story continues. I returned the CD, got another, same problem. At wife's suggestion tried it on an old WindowsXP laptop. Worked OK. Called H&R Block, Leslie was baffled (the Mac guru was unavailable) so she led me through the process to download the software from the H&R Block web site (I had to install the software on my laptop to get a secret code to do this, I immediately uninstalled the program. BTW, I highly recommend the Block Customer Service!)
So the basic problem was solved ... but still do not know why the iMac did not recognize the disk. Any thoughts? Anyone else have a similar problem with software?
    Thanks.

HP M8120N running vista home premium, I can burn cd/DVD's, I can view and open pictures and data files files from dvd/cd but I can't install software programs from the drive. Even tried just opening up the drive to view the disc and get please insert disc message, Please, can anyone help?

Keith, just for grins, go to your Apple and click it and then choose System Preferences, and when it opens choose CD-DVD and see what option you have checked for the different media.
Just a chance when you did an update it might have changed a default setting you had.

  • IMAC can't physically eject a disc

I tried restarting while holding eject. Tried running the /usr/bin/drutil eject prompt in terminal. Tried the generic eject buttons.
It makes noise like it is attempting to eject but nothing comes out.

My iMac would often not eject CDs or DVDs. This was a mechanical problem not a software problem.
*Problem description*: When the iMac attempted eject a disc I could hear a thump and feel the disc hitting something on the case after which it would give up and reload the disc. The cause of this problem was a misalignment of the drive with the slot on the case. This in turn was caused because the front and the body of the iMac (the back part) had sprung apart a bit.
*Problem solution*: The solution was to squeeze the front and body together by placing my hand on the upper right corner of the iMac with the palm on the front and the fingers on the body. I could feel the bezel and body press back together with a very mild snap. After that there were no more problems with ejecting discs.
Comments: I move my iMac around a bit and assume the the separation of front from back happened during transport.

  • IMac ejects CDs & Software Discs, only reads DVDs

Hello. I am not very good at working with computers, so sorry if I forget to add things. I was given a used one of these:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
It automatically ejects CDs, software discs, etc. The only type of disk it reads are DVDs, and at times, it still ejects them. How can I repair this? I do not have applecare since this is a second hand computer. Would it be very expensive to replace the optical drive? Do I need a new one? Can I run an external dvd/cd drive to just avoid this? Is the drive just dirty?
    Please help.

Thanks to a very helpful Apple Genius Bar expert, I have just saved over £100. After reading this forum I tried everything suggested to get my superdrive to accept my DVDs and to get my iDVD to produce a slideshow. After two weeks of frustration I took the whole iMac to the shopping mall. The genius reached into the counter draw and held a can of compressed air. After a minute of squirting the air into the dvd slot all my prayers had been answered. He told me that cleaning the drive like this work on about a third of all his clients. I have now bought a can of compressed air from Amazon for £4 and have it ready for the next problem the arises. (I have tried the same technique on the unruly kids, but it does not seem to work on them!)

  • My imac was running snow leopard and was upgraded to Mt. Lion. My Microsoft Office for Mac now will not open.  SO since my Office was 2004, I just purchased Office for Mac 2011.  Do I delete the icons before loading Office 2011 OR after I load 2011?

Upgraded my Imac to Mt. Lion and now the Microsoft Office icons will not open WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, or ENTOURAGE.  I just pruchased on Ebay
OFFICE 2011 since my old version was 2004.  DO I REMOVE THE OLD ICONS BEFORE LOADING OFFICE 2011 RO AFTER I LOAD IT???
    THANKS, DR PEPPERMINT

Office 2011 will install in a separate folder. But do not install Office 2011 until you remove Office 2004. It comes with its own uninstalled located in the MS Office folder. Only use the uninstaller to get rid of it. Then install Office 2011.
Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • Mac Pro DVD drive won't load some software discs

I just bought two sets of Photoshop Elements, and my 2007 Mac Pro failed to recognize all six DVDs. I'm realizing I've had this problem with a few software discs in recent years, including some Final Cut Studio install discs. CDs and regular DVDs work fine - just some software DVDs are eventually ejected by the computer without showing up on the desktop. I have tried cleaning the drive with a disc cleaner.
My way around it has been to put these discs in my PC, make a copy, and then these copies load fine in my Mac. But it's a nuisance, and my PC won't be around forever.
Can anyone suggest what the problem might be? Or a decent external drive (Blu-ray?) that I might want to replace it with?
    Thanks.

I'll try that tomorrow. Thinking it could also be:
    1)  The PRAMM battery. found info on that they can wear out close to 5 years. This MAC PRO is close to that now.  And I use a lot of power on it.
    2) MAC PRO is plugged into a  SURGE PROTECTOR, instead of right into the wall outlet.
    3) Been doing a lot of FORCE QUITS and HARD BOOT -- unplugging it directly when it wouldn't shut down soon enough --  lately this past year.
I just assumed that this MAC PRO with the XEON QUAD CORE etc., was a heavy duty enough NLE,
that i wouldn't have these problems. It's not fully loaded with all the chips it can carry...and I don't have near enough external terabyte hard drives for storing video and audio files to edit. I've been storing wayyy too much
on the internal hard dives and just have to stop that.
I noticed these past few days that much of the LETTERING for hard drive icons and folders' titles
were starting to look in OVERLAPPING of the lettering. That was my first hint that  something was up.

  • Cannot eject/read discs in Windows XP Pro on iMac

I just installed Windows XP Professional on my new iMac dual core computer.
The next step was to "Eject the Windows XP CD" so that I could insert the Mac Drivers CD and install that software. When I went to eject the Windows XP Pro disc nothing happened. I tried clicking on "Eject this Disk" and nothing happened. I finally shut down and restarted as a Mac, ejected the Windows XP disc and then restarted in Windows again. I then inserted the Mac Drivers CD, but Windows acted like there was no disc inserted. I couldn't eject. I had to restart again in Mac to eject the disc.
Does anyone know why Windows isn't recognizing a disc when inserted in the disc drive of my new iMac?
    Thanks!
    Cyndy

    Hi Cyndy,
Assuming you have a way to move files between OS X and Windows (e.g. your Windows partition is FAT32, a USB pen drive, etc), there is a way for you to install the drivers without having to install them from a CD.
    1. Go to Applications > Utilities
    2. ctrl-click "Boot Camp Assistant"
    3. Select "Show Package Contents" and a new window will open
    4. in the new window, go to Contents > Resources
    5. open DiskImage.dmg. A disk image called "MacintoshDrivers" will mount on your desktop.
    6. In this disk image, you will find a file called "Install Macintosh Drivers for Windows XP.exe". This is the install program you need to run in Windows in order to install the Apple drivers.

  • SuperDrive on iMac Keeps Ejecting Discs

I've been having trouble with my early 2009 iMac's SuperDrive.  Recently I'd been having trouble reinstalling a 3rd party app after ML upgrade, and the install CD was getting stuck.  I did have to pop it out manually using a card to gently make it come out.  Now the drive will only eject every disc I try to insert.  Is the drive toast, or is there a way to koax the drive to take discs again without having to open the iMac?  It's obviouosly out of AppleCare, so if I have to replace the SD, what should I get, and how much can I expect it to be to get someone to install it?  This has been one **** of a computer and I want to keep everything on it running right, even with its age.  I just need it to last about 2 more years, then I will be looking to upgrade.  Also as an aside, will the external SuperDrive work on this kind of iMac?  I know it's meant for use with the MBA and other notebooks, but I am curious if that could be an option for me in this situation.  Thanks!

I can't find any specific info...
Apple reports that the slot-loading 8X "SuperDrive" with 4X double-layer burning (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) "writes DVD+R DL discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed, writes DVD-RW at up to 6x and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed, [and] reads CDs at up to 24x speed."

  • IMac (2011) white screen for long time before loading

    Hello everyone,
When i powered on my iMac yesterday I got the white screen (before the white screen with the grey Apple logo) for a very long time (app. 4-5 min.) before loading the white screen with the grey Apple logo and eventually starting up my dekstop.
Also the wireless bluetooth mouse and keyboard kept on searching for connection, unsuccesfully - so I pluggend in a cabled keyboard and mouse.
    So far so good.
I chose to make a clean installation of Mavericks OS X (which was also the current OS X), hoping this would put a end to the long loading time when powering up the computer. However this didn't do any good, and I still get the long loading time with the blank white screen, and no succesfull connection between bluetooth mouse+keyboard and the computer.
Does anyone recognize this issue, and how should I deal with it?
The harddrive is a 1TB SATA, and I never had similar issues with the machine.
The clean install of Mavericks was done after erasing the harddrive, through disc utilities.
I feel very confused about this issue, and can't no longer find any alternative solutions to solve it.
Hoping for your advice and kind help

    True :-)
I pressed D upon startup and was able to launch the disc utility.
Tried to Google for people with the same problem, but didnt get any decent answer.
I am thinking some component must be broken, either the HDD or RAM?

  • My DVD drive on my IMAC will not allow me to load a disc, even though there is no DVD in the disc slot.

Sounds like you have a newer iMac than this forum covers. The newer ones have a bar or "fence" that, on detecting the drive has failed. moves the bar to block the slot so no media can be inserted (to avoid damage or loss of a disk).
You will need a new optical drive--contact an Apple retail Store or an Authorized Apple Service Provider:

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements running on?
With your Publish+Share/Disc/AVCHD can you burn to folder successfully for AVCHD on DVD disc?
Just before you were ready to start the burn to AVCHD on DVD disc, In the Quality Area of the burn to AVCHD on DVD, what are the readings for Space Required and Bitrate (with and without a check mark next to "Fit Content To Available Space"?
Please review your Scratch Disk situation (locations and free space at the locations). See Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disks as well as the contents of the project's files/folders in the 12.0 Folder in Libraries/Documents/Premiere Elements (if Windows).
Are you running from a User Account with Administrative Privileges + Run As Administrator?
And have you explored other disc brands as well as types?
    More later.
    Thank you.

Mac OS X 10.6.8 is Snow Leopard. If you can't or don't want to upgrade your Mac to Mountain Lion and it has a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU, phone the Apple Store and order a download code for Lion.
