IMac G5 (EMC1989) will not start

I have read several messages, but just cant seem to find my issue. I try to start and the computer (G5 Imac (EMC 1989) gets stuck at the gray screen and progress indicator. I have tried... zapping the pram, reset the PMU, repaired the permissions. I have not done an archive and reinstall as I need to back up the data and reformat the HD as per a message I got when I tried to reinstall.
The fan is humming loud and the gray screen just sits there for ever... 15-30 minutes then I give up.
Not sure if the effort is worth this 4 yr old machine, or just time to upgrade.
Thanks for your replies, Nic

Take a look at this Apple support bulletin - http://www.apple.com/au/support/imac/powersupply/repairextension/. While the bulletin focuses on EMC2056, I suspect that Apple may have extended this to other machines as well. I have a 20" iMac with EMC1989 and it died a few months ago. I lugged it into an Apple Store today in Chicago and the guy took the back off, identified a diagnostic light that was blinking, heard the power supply clicking and said that it was a known issue and that he would replace the power supply for free.
It took about 20 minutes and the machine is up and running and is good to go.
So... food for thought. The clicking that you hear may not be the hard drive and could instead be the power supply.
Good luck!

  • IMac - OS X - Will Not Start / Safe Boot / Boot to CD

    Unit:
2007 iMac with OS X  ... unknown version
    Problem:
Will not boot. Upon pressing power button it attempts to go through startup procedure then grey-screen and error message (You Need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again.)
I have come to understand this is called a "Kernel Panic"
I have been researching this issue all day. I cannot get it to safe boot by pressing the shift key. It does pull a progress bar but ultimately fails and returns to the kernel panic.
I have attempted to start from the CD to attempt utility disk, but I cannot get it to boot from CD. I have held the C key down. I have pressed it repeatedly. I have used it in combination with the alt/control/command keys. All have failed.
If anyone has any idea what might can be done I thank you in advance for your assistance.
    ~Daniel

You have a hardware issue. Please make an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP so it can be professionaly diagnosed.

  • My IMac 24" intel will not start in safe mode.

Did a Shift - Command-V and the black screen showing all the startup steps appeared and it all looked good except: AFL Alart Sockwed cant update and INIT Reboot transmit failed. All else looks good. I have tried this 3 times and never go past that point. Then the screen turns off white like it does when it starts normally before the apple appears and the last time the screen went black.
I have tried starting with just the Shift Key and computer starts up but not in safe mode.
I have tired starting with the OS X disk and the C key and it will not recognize the disk.I used the #1 disk since the instructions are printed on the disk. Did not work so I tried disk 2 and I get a menu to start the OS or tools. If I click on either one the screen goes white and stays that way.
computer starts fine and provides a login window, and then the desktop screen with screen saver pictures in perfect color. As it goes through starting programs it starts the same programs that is had open when the computer originally crashed. Even when I close them, before it locks up again, and I am forced to restart the same programs open up to the same place. Its like the computer is frozen in one location and will not go beyond that point. Eventually the screen turns white and sometimes black and sometimes gray.
Tech support thought it was the video card, put a new one in but did not fix the problem and then said it was not that but that it was the monitor. I said that did not make sense since the monitor and desktop icons and pictures are beautiful and clear. They then said it was the inverter board on the monitor and Apple only replace the whole thing. I purchased an inverter board and replace it. No change. The tech person said that the computer works find without the monitor connected - I will see if that is correct next. Isn't that a more systimatic testing procedure then trying parts to see if it works? Oh I did do the complete long hardware test. Took about an hour and it passed! Isn't this strange?
I have to replace a monitor that has perfect color and image if it is something simple to fix or replace. Has anyone ever encounter anything like this? Could it be a virus?

As you probably read everthing was working fine for over an hour so I shut down and put everything back together completely, all monitor screws, aluminum cover and screws and screen cover, unplugged the external monoitor, plugged in external HD's and turned on the computer and guess what the old problem returned. So I unplugged the external HD's and plugged in the external monitor and took the screen cover off and restarted the computer and guess what it is working fine. Doing a disk utility verify first then if no problem I will unplug the external monitor if all is good then I will plug in the external HD's if all is good I will install what I believe is the problem the monitor cover screen.
Your post about the Temp sensor and another post about the cable to the monitor with the temp sensor has me believing that the monitor is getting too hot for the fans to cool down or the sensor is faulty. Which one is the temp sensor? It is the monitor cable that has the little box at the end that screws to the logic board?
How do you know if the secsor is bad or the monitor is overheating and the sencor is working correctly? Is there a test?

  • Imac G5 tiger will not start up, PLEASE HELP

i have an imac G5 powerPC running tiger. when i turn it on it does the normal noise, then goes through the normal stuff, but when the load up or start up bar comes on, it will load slowly inch by inch when normally it would load almost instantly. it will then get to the end and just stay there...
what is wrong with this? how can i fix it? please help, thanks!

    HI,
*"thank you for your reply. however this did not work."*
Do you mean you couldn't run Disk Utility from your install disk?
*"if i re-install tiger will my documents and music and stuff be lost? will that solve my problem?"*
No one can guarantee it will solve the problem but instead of an erase and install which would erase all your documents and music, try an archive and install instead. For information go here.
About the Archive & Install Feature
You should also make a back up of important files before any Mac OS X installation, whether erase or archive just in case.
*"i tried to install the latest security update and when it was downloading it, it was almost done when a message came up and said that it could not be installed at this time"*
Check your available disk space also. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Not enough available drive space can cause issues like you are experiencing.

  • IMac will not start up - blue screen after months of Leopard use

I have an iMac G5 that will not start up. It hangs at the blue screen, but does not have the issue with the ApplicationEnhancer.bundle file. It will start up in safe mode.
This iMac will not start from a bootable external drive (the external drive can be used as a start up disk successfully with my iBook G4). The iMac's internal drive can be used as a start up disk for the iBook (via the target mode) and does not appear to have any problems. Does this seem like it is a hardware issue with the iMac? The iMac also hangs at the blue screen if I attempt to start up with the Leopard install disk after using the startup disk preference pane in safe start mode.
I have repaired permissions, verified the disk, etc., using the disk utility. I have cleared caches, preferences, and so on, using Mac HelpMate.

It may be that some of your login items might be incompatible with the mac. Also, try booting up from the install disk and repair your disk.

  • DVD will not start up?

I insert the disk I wan't to play, and the iMac  Super Drive will not start. It accepts the dvd. makes noise like it wants to start, but then makes a winding sound, stutters a few times, then makes the sound as if a dvd was re-inserted, but then it gets to a  dead, nothing happening stop. period.cccccccc
If you can suggest any how to fix idea, we would really appreciate it.
    Thank You.

What you're describing appears to be a failing or failed optical drive. Take your Mac to your nearest Apple Store or Apple Approved Repair Centre for diagnosis and repair.

  • Will not start only spinning wheel

My two-year old iMac 21.5 will not start. All I get is a gray Apple Screen and the spinner.   Before this restart, I changed the permissions for the hard drive to allow the administrator to have access to the whole hard drive.  I got a start series of interminable warning saying that certain plug-ins or such had to be replaced.
    Can anyone help?

You just hosed the installation. Most OS components require the system to be the owner, not the administrator. All I can suggest is to boot into your bootable backup/clone, wipe the HD, and restore it. It might be possible to boot with your SL install disk and restore a TM backup, but I don't use it. • Mac will not start. HELP!!

my 17" imac early 2006 will not start it came on yesterday with a fail screen and telling me to hold the power key to restart once i did that the cd drive was going made and no screen and the power light stays on. i have tried holding down the option key cmd+PR and this does nothing. no apple start up tune just a power light and a sound like the hard drive getting ready to start. any help would be great. wanna get fixed before my pc mates give me hard time as i always rave about macs.

    Hi
It sounds like you are experiencing kernel panic, if you see that grey screen with multi languages. The cause is usually hardware, possibly RAM. Have a look at this link. It may help you.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
It mentions Tiger, but I think you could work with that.
I hope you can get things fixed before your mates come around.

  • Imac 27-inch 10.9 recovery disk will not start

    hello everyone,
I am having boot up problems on my imac 27-inch.
I pressed the power button and press and held the Option key, I chose the
Recovery disk, but the Recovery disk did not start, instead I have the grey Apple logo and it keeps running but will not start.
The imac 27-inch was bought refurbished in late 2010
I also have imac apple care from 2010 never used. First time problem.
On pressing the Option key during startup,
Mach Hard disk and Recovery Disk 10.9 is displayed.
Choosing mac hard disk does not boot up the OS instead I get a big Zero sign with line through it or a big flash question mark sign.
Choosing the Recovery Disk 10.9 does not boot up Disk Utility, instead I get the grey Apple logo.
    Please help. Thanks.

Your Recovery HD is damaged. You may be able to repair it using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.4. Under the Windowm menu select Disk Center. Select your boot volume from the list. Click on the Recovery HD tab then click on the Create a Recovery volume for this disk. Select Mavericks from the dropdown menu labeled "Recovery HD version to be applied." See if that works. If it does not then see Update - Create Lion RecoveryHD Partition Quickly Without Reinstalling | brunerd. Or see Recovery Partition Creator 3.7 – Updated for Mavericks ...

  • IMac will not start-up, do not have a backup, any way to back it up before erasing the drive?

Our iMac will not start up, it goes to the flashing question mark screen. I have tried the different steps listed at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440, but they have not worked, as it says the disk is not repairable. It says I need to erase the disk and reinstall OS X. However, I do not currently have a back-up of the hard drive, so is there any way I can back it up before erasing and reinstalling, even though the iMac will not start up? Thanks.

I also tried downloading Snow Leopard onto an external hard drive and boot from there, but it just comes up to the choose a language screen everytime.

  • My imac will not start - it is hunged up, when I turn it on I see the apple and the little wheel go around and around and nothing happens - what can I do ???

Hello - can anybody help me - my Imac will not start - When I try to start it I just get to see the apple and the wheel that goes around and around  HELP !!

Restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. How you do this is when you hear the startup tone hold down the Shift Key until you see the progress bar appear. Let it fully boot, then open System Preferences - Startup Disk and ensure your internal HD is selected and then click Restart to test. If you still don't have luck you should run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, you may need to run the test 2-3 times to report any errors. To run AHT you will need teh ORIGINAL Install Discs that shipped with the computer. Instructions for AHT are in:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
    Have you been backiing up?
