IMac G5 firewire question.

I was wondering is there a reson that when I turn off my iMac G5. That my firewire harddrive,DVD burner and other firewire devises are still powered on and have not turned off along with my iMac G5. Also I have a Canupos 110 video converter box that is or should be turing off when I turn off my computer also. I did e-mail the tech help people for my Canupos 110 and they tell me it should be turing off along with my computer and that I should make shour that my iMac is turned off and not sleeping or hibernatting but I know the iMac is turned off.Thanks.

HI Rob,
Thanks again for your time and help on this one. You know its fuuny you should talk about Lacie You know all of my ext. firewire DVD burners,Harddrive are from Lacie and I got the DVD burner with my Imac G5 Christmas along with other hardware for my computer. I got it all at the Apple store. Now I do know that my harddrive will turn its motor off and it sounds like it shuts down. But the blue light is still on on my ext. firewire harddrive. Also the blue light on my DVD burner dose the same thing but only on my Mac as dose the Canupos 110. But on the other hand it was not so with my PC when I used them with it. Everything from the motor to the lights all turned off along with the PC. But with my Powerbook G4 and now my iMac G5 the lights and sound steel stay on on my Mac's. Now I have got us to them being on but. One day I got to thinking to myself is this right is this safe. Why dose my PC turn them off when my Mac's keep them on. Why would Apple have done this what would be the purpes of this but. From that day on I have been on a qwest to find the reson for this. If nothing more then finding out I have to unplug them I would be happy. Though thats a big hassle to do all the time day in and day out to have to hook and rehook all the time. But If thats what I have to do I will. But you know it would be nice to know why this is. Some were I read and for the life of me I can not seem to find it again. But I read some were about the Apple computers having a always on firewire ports. Now weather this is true or not I do not know. Now I have e-mailed Apple and Canupos about this and from Apple I get. You will just have to unhook them when your done to they do not no about other products that come from difrent places even though they sell them in there stores. Now from Canupos I get info back some what the same about you will just have to unplug them after your done using them. But then I got anther e-mail from Canupos telling me that your Canupos 110 should be turning off when the IMac G5 is turned off. But they just can not seem to tell me why this is. I have also told them it dose not do this with my PC only with my Mac. It just seems to be a little dangerise to to me to have power always going in your computer when it is turned off. Sorry for my bad spelling. Thanks again.

  • I5 iMac and Firewire question...

I have a Firewire 400 external hard drive that I need to hook up to my new i5 iMac. From what I've read, I need to buy a 6-pin to 9-pin Firewire cable. Right?
If I read right, FW400 is 6-pin, FW800 is 9-pin, and the small FW connector seen on DV cameras and such is 4-pin?
Thank you for making me less of an idiot

    Yes that is right!
To go from FireWire 400 to 800 you will need either a cable or an adapter:
    9 pin 800 to 6 pin 400 > http://www.firefold.com/9-Pin-to-6-Pin-C54.aspx
    or this adapter > http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html
For a camera with a 4 pin Firewire connection you would need the following:
    9 pin to 4 pin > http://www.firefold.com/9-Pin-to-4-Pin-Firewire-Cables-C53.aspx
The FireFold (cable's) and Sonnet (adapter) above are just examples that I used, thay can also be found on line at OWC, Cables to Go, Your Cable Store or at most of the larger Computer/Electronics' outlets.

  • Slghtly complicated iMac Firewire question....

    Hi,
I have a problem with a G3 iMac Indigo 400Mhz machine. I'm trying to connect a Miglia Director's Cut Scart box to it via firewire, but the iMac won't recognise it - About This Mac says there are no firewire devices attached - even though the lights on the front of the Scart box are on, receiving power from the firewire port. This box works OK on my Mac Mini, so I don't think that it's a cable issue, but I'm planning to get a new cable just in case....
I did some checking into Firewire on the G3 iMac and I've seen a few references to a firmware upgrade, but according to the documents, you need to apply this upgrade through OS 9. The problem I have is that my iMac was a second-user machine and runs OS X 10.2.8 - it doesn't Classic installed and I don't have any 9.0 discs to install (might have to throw myself on the mercy of eBay tomorrow....:-))
I've tried the `disconnect everything and unplug for ten minutes' suggestion with no effect, so my guess is there's either a hardware problem or I need the firmware update. Has anyone else had a similar issue, if so, how did you solve it? If the firmware update is needed, can it be applied through OS X, or does it have to be OS 9? Are there any BIOS settings that I could check and if so, how? (yes, I'm more used to PC's and Windows - sorry! ). I'd appreciate any advice you could give.
    Cheers
    Carl

The device is compatible with OS 9.2.2 and OS 10.x, and the processor requirements aren't that demanding (300 MHz G3 or faster). I wonder if the iMac's FireWire bus is overburdened, by supplying power to the box? You could always try using the (optional) power adapter for it, to determine if that's the problem.
The iMac 4.1.9 Firmware Update must be run, while the iMac is booted from a local disk running OS 9.1, 9.2.1, or 9.2.2. Unfortunately, booting from an optical drive won't work. It is a nuissance, but you might have to temporarily install OS 9.x on the hard drive or on an external FireWire hard drive. The Catch-22 with the latter option is that FireWire boot capability may require that the computer already have the latest firmware. It's possible that the firmware update has already been run. Using the "System Profiler" (in the Utilities Folder), if the "Boot ROM Version" indicates 4.1.9f1 or 4.1.9f2, it has already been updated. There are no BIOS settings to check.

  • How do I use my iMac's Firewire 800 port to connect to my external hardrive using a USB Micro-B input?

I have a late 2009 iMac with Firewire 800 input on the back.  I have a Western Digital Passport external hard drive with USB Micro-B input that I would like to connect to the Firewire (4 USB inputs aren't nearly enough on the iMac). I can't find an adapter to do this. Can someone please help??  As an alternative, is there an adapter that will convert the Firewire 800 to standard USB2.0?

USB and FireWire work in very different ways, so there is no adapter.
Instead, you should just get a USB 2.0 hub, like this one
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/USB2HB7PRO/
There are many choices, but be sure to get one that is powered (it comes with its own power supply).  Cheaper hubs rely on the computer's USB port for power.

Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?

  • Transferring Data from old iMac to new iMac via Firewire

I am having difficulty transferring data from my old iMac to my new iMac via firewire. Per the instructions contained in migration assistant, when I hold down the letter "T" key during startup of the "old" mac the firewire symbol does not appear. Given that the firewire symbol does not appear I am unable to proceed with the transfer. Of note, my new Mac is the '09 24" iMac and my old iMac is the early 2006 model with the 17" screen. Incidentally, I am using the following cable contained in the attached link along with the adaptor (400) with respect to my old iMac.

    Can anyone help?

    Hi Todd
Not sure why that wouldn't work, but it could be that cable and adapter setup as the Early Core Duo only supports firewire 400.
You should try a 9 to 6 Pin Bilingual FireWire Cable:

  • IMac to new iMac via Firewire---Hung up at 34 minutes for 8 hours

I have a 2007 iMac connected to my new 27" iMac via Firewire 800->400 cable. It seems to have gone fine, for awhile. Now it's stuck at 34 minutes remaining for over 8 hours.
Do I let it keep going?
If not, how do I stop it and start over? Won't the new machine have some of the files already transferred? I'd like to start clean again.
    Please help! Missing work here.....
    Steve

It's possible one of the Macs went to sleep.
It's also possible there's a problem on the old Mac's internal HD. Verify it, per #6 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).
Do you have either Time Machine or "clone" backups of the old Mac, on an external HD? If so, it's a bit easier to plug that in to the new one and transfer from it. Start with the "Second Chance" in the green box of [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Why does my imac have a question mark in the doc sayin start osx

my imac has a question mark in my doc. on top of that question mark it say "start osx" how can i fix this

    Your images are "disconnected"
that means they are not in the same place on your hard disk as they were when you imported them into Elements. There are a couple ways this can happen, mostly folks who use Windows to move images to a new location instead of Elements will run into this issue.
To fix it, you either need to move them back using Windows, or Reconnect them using Elements.
You didn't mention waht version you have, but it's done the same in all versions.
Here is a link to the Help doc on how to Reconnect.

  • 27" iMac Firewire Question

    Hi Folks,
I recently got the 27inch i7 iMac. I use it for Music Production and just general internet surfing.
My question is - I current use a Firewire audio interface (M-Audio Profire 2626) and with only 1 Firewire connection on the iMac.
Is it possible to plug a Firewire external hard drive into the back of my audio device, In a daisy chain type connection
(eg - iMac TO Audio Interface TO External HD)
to store my audio files and have no latency issues?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated
    BTD

Yes you can daisy chain them, the connection on your iMac is FW 800 so if your Profire only has FW 400 then you will need a cable like this. My suggestion would be to get an external HD that has 2 FW 800 ports (OWC Mercury, Lacie Quadra D2 or G-Tech) and you are set.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • New iMac, have several questions

    Community,
First of all I'm not sure if this is the right community to post to. My questions seem to span several forum categories. If there is a better general forum for my questions, please let me know.
I just got a new iMac, (21.5 inch late 2013), with a 1T fusion drive and pre-loaded with Yosemite (version 10.10.1). My "old" iMac is a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo vintage 2006 model with 3G RAM and running Leopard and Snow Leopard. I'm trying to learn the ins and outs of my new iMac and Yosemite and I have some questions. Keep in mind that I'm an old dog trying to learn some new tricks, so please be patient.
    1. I think I may already have the answer on this one (via the FAQ I read about Fusion Drives) but I'll ask anyway just to be sure I understand. On my previous macs, I've always partitioned my hard drive into 3 or 4 partitions and I would like to do the same with my new iMac. I tried following the Disk Utility Help but I'm running into a problem. Apparently I can only partition my fusion drive into two partitions. If I try to further partition either of those partitions I find I can only merge the existing two partitions back together. According to the Disk Utility help file, I should be able to create as many partitions as I want. So which is correct, the FAQ, (only two partition on a Fusion Drive), or the Disk Utility help, (as many partitions as I want)? And if I can have more than two partitions, how do I do that?
    2. Related to question 1, I also have an external hard drive (plain vanilla iOmega type) that is connected to my old iMac via USB cable. I use it for backup storage. Will there be any problem using that drive with my new iMac?
    3. One of my partitions is for Windows. I know OS X has Boot Camp but my understanding is that a user must restart when switching between OS X and Windows. Is that still true for Yosemite? If so, I'll stick with Parallels.
    4. Related to question 3, the help link for setting up Boot Camp indicates I need a 64 bit version of Windows 7. I have a 32 bit version. Is that an issue (keep in mind, I'll likely be using Parallels)?
    5. More on Windows. I see there is an option to format a Windows partition as MS-DOS FAT. On my old iMac my Windows partition was formatted as normal Mac OS Extended (journaled) and that works fine. Is there a reason I should format the Windows partition on my new iMac as MS-DOS FAT?
    6. I miss seeing the hard drive icons on my desktop, everything seems to be in the dock. Is there a way to show my hard drive icon and any other partitions on my desktop?
    7. Of course my biggest job will be to transfer data from my old iMac to the new one. The Firewire port on my old iMac is dead (zapped by lightning a few years ago). What is the best way to transfer data between the two computers? Note, I see a warning in the Disk Utility help file that "to prevent loss of data on your Fusion Drive don't connect it to a mac that's using a version of OS X older than 10.8.5". Is that warning relevant to transferring my data since my old iMac has
    10.5.8 and 10.6.8?
That's my first barrage of newbie questions. There will likely be more.
    John

    Niel,
Thanks for the quick reply. I understand 1, 2 and 3. I'll check with the Parallels people to get full resolution on items 4 & 5. It's a shame about the restart requirement for Boot Camp.
Item 6 is a "duh". If I'd looked further I could have answered my own question.
For item 7 I didn't get a definitive answer to my question about the relevancy of the warning. Is there an issue? For the answer you did provide are you saying i should dump everything from my old iMac onto my external hard drive and then move that external drive to the new iMac and load it? With regard to using a network approach, all I have is airport to my DSL router from my old iMac and then either Firewire or airport from the router to my new iMac. How would I use that setup? I have no other local or remote "network".

  • IMac dead firewire giveaway

I tried to use Target Disk to transfer data from my MacBook to my new iMac. Didn't work, and after being on the phone with Applecare for 30 minutes they chalked it up as a bad cable. Took it in the the Genius Bar and confirmed it was a dead firewire port, perhaps often overlooked because, how many people utilize firewire? (their question, not mine).
Anyway, b/c I bought the thing a week ago, they were just going to swap it out for a new one. Feels a little weird to give them my machine to utilize migration for the data transfer - they said three days. But my entire Gmail account is on that thing via IMAP on Apple Mail. Ugh. I wish they would have just swapped out the hard drive. The genius said that would be too complicated.
Check your firewire, but prep your machine before you give it away.

    Hi,
If we tell you that - You may have to be " silenced " or disposed of!
    Only joking....
There are several tests that you can perform on almost any computer. The results of those tests, usually, point to one or another component failure.
Its only easy if you actually know the answer!
    Regards.
    Ian.

  • Would like to buy TC to replace AE for iMac and MBP; questions

    hi all--
currently i have a dual-band airport extreme on bridge mode connected by ethernet to my AT&T Uverse wireless router. we have several Airport Express' and an ATV2 in the house and the 2 wireless connections; the g put out by Uverse, and an n put out by the AE. I switch to either one depending on location. I have a WD 1TB drive hooked up to my 750GB iMac via FW800. for years that was fine as the iMac was the main computer and i just worried about it's backups.
now we have upgraded a 2007 MacBook to a new MBPro w/ a 500GB SSD, 12 GB RAM, and an i7 chip. needless to say, now THIS computer has become pimary, as it blazes!! but now since there's so much info on it, it really needs to be backed up as well.
i'm OK with basic/moderate connectivity, but sometimes get confused by more complex issues. so let me throw my wants at you. i'm hoping that i can buy the 3TB TC to replace the AE and WD drive, split the TC drive into 2 partitions, and keep the iMac hooked up to it via ethernet, and let the MBPro back up wirelessly to it's own partition.
i guess this might be pretty basic and obvious, but before i buy all this and sell my old equipment, i'd like to make sure it should work. i've never set up a TC before, but i hope that i can just tell it to use the prior settings for the AE to get most setup issues out of the way. and i'm not quite sure how (or when in the process) to partition the TC drive, assuming i can.
if someone can advise me whether this setup is possible, and how to (or a link on how to) partition to TC drive for the 2 computers that would be fantastic. the main reason i'm unsure about doing this is that on Apple's TC page, they really only seem to discuss all computers backing up wirelessly, which would be silly for the iMac since they're side-by-side.
any thoughts for me, my faithful bretheren?

You cannot partition the TC drive but the two computers can use TM to their own areas without any need for you to intrude.. That part Apple do a good job of. The backup sparse bundle is effectively a disk image and the computer keeps track of it by virtual of serial numbers.. you will have no issues.
And the iMac can use ethernet which will be much faster.. you should do both backups initially by ethernet.. once completed the MBP can backup via wireless.. but the speed of wireless will make a mockery of your SSD.. wow, 500GB SSD.. !!
The TC should be relatively easy to slot into place of the AE.. it is really the same thing.. but I sure would NOT sell it all off until you get everything working.. and I would still keep the firewire drive just as a further backup.. there is nothing wrong with using a different software and then leaving the FW drive in a friend or relatives house for a rainy day.

  • Windows 7 on iMac: A few questions

    Hi,
I am considering replacing my current Windows 7 PC with an iMac.
Since I have lots of Windows 7 software/apps which I will still need to use, I have a few questions:
    1. What is the "best" way to enable a Windows 7 virtual instance on iMac?
         - Boot Camp
         - Parallels
         - Other?
    2. Do I need to partition the iMac HDD to enable this? If so, which tools would you recommend to do this relatively easily?
    3. Do I need a separate dedicated NTFS-formatted external HDD for the Windows 7 virtual instance?
    Thanks!

    1. There is no best way. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, so each exist to accomodate your needs. If you are run graphics intensive Windows apps suchs as 3D gaming, CAD/CAM, etc then you would benefit by booting into Boot Camp, however if your apps are more office traditional then running virtualization apps such as Parallels or VM Fusion is absolutely the way to go. The advantage of Boot Camp is it's a dedicated Windows Machine, you can boot into either Boot Camp (Windows) or OS X but  you cannot do both simultaneously. If you decide on virtualization the performance is great and you can run OS X and Windows together. Many switchers (myself included) started with both OS's on their Macs but over time drop using MS Windows after they have migrated all their Windows apps to OS X based apps.
    2. If you decide on the Boot Camp option then launch Boot Camp Assistant and it will walk you through setting up the partition, if you buy virtualization apps then follow the install instructions that come with the app.
    3. No.

  • Urgent iMac Hard drive question!

I have an 08 20" iMac with a bad hard drive.  I am looking to replace it.  Is there a list of compatible hard drives somewhere so I know what to look for?  Also, I have a MacBook pro from the same year. Am I able to use the hard drive from the MacBook in the iMac?  Any help is greatly appreciated!  I am looking for something around 500GB.  Also, does anyone have an idea how much it would be to have someone install it for me if I provided my own hard drive?  The quote right now from an Apple retailer is $250 for the hard drive plus installation.  I'm hoping to save a few bucks by providing my own.

Any SATA II 3.5" hard drive will work, you can navigate to www.macsales.comand see a fairly complete list of compatible hard drives. However as the previous  poster mentioned working on an iMac is not recommended unless you are extremely comfortable working on notebook computers. Working on an iMac is not simple and it's easy to damage it beyond repair unless you know exactly what you're doing. I'd recommend taking the machine to your local AASP and have them do it.
Finally to answer your question regarding using your old MBP's HD, no that is a 2.5" HD and the iMacs use 3.5" HDs.
