IMac G5 freezing after use of dashboard

Hey guys,
My faithful iMac G5 has been a great workhorse and is now suffering from a strange affliction. If I go into dashboard it slows down terribly to the point of not being useful. if i click out of dashboard it and try to run an application it basically sits and freezes. any advice, all latest software downloads, 85gig free memory from 250gig drive.

Hi fishmammal-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
Is this a new problem or have you had it since upgrading to Leopard? If you click on the desktop during the slowdown will it quit the dashboard and return to the desktop fairly quickly? What other programs are running at the same time?
I believe that adding more RAM to your machine will help this problem.
Luck-

  • Imac keeps freezing when using safari

my imac keeps freezing when using safari or finder
The beachball appears and I have to wait.
My safari cache is emptied, have run Disk Utility to check permissions.
    Rebooted various times.
Sorted out ``the community toolbar not supported" issue and still it's happening.
Anyone any tips on what to do next??
    It's a 24 inch iMac - early 2009 version
Processor is 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Software is OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)

I have only been able to read your reply by going online on my phone -
I started up my iMac in safe mode on Saturday morning and reran Disk Utility , no problems.
I shut it down and re started it as normal.  Whilst I was able to use my Mail and MS entourage and Safari brower,
the computer was very slow and the beachball appeared briefly each time I used a program.
On Monday , it didn't recognise one of the printers and was continually hanging.
All software is up to date and I have run Disk Utility - repair permissions again.
I shut the computer down yesterday and rebooted in Safe mode this afternoon so that I could try to look in
    Console.

  • My keyboard freezes after using the option key... what gives?

    I have a 17" MacBookPro with OSX 10.6.8
The problem:   My keyboard key freeze after using the " option key"  in Photoshop or  when downloading a file using the option key.
I can usually use it 2 or 3 times before it makes a chirping cricket like sound… then my keys freeze up.? The only way to correct it is to restart.
Anyone else have or had this issue?   it's frustrating.  What's the deal?

Can I just bring my laptop to the nearest service center and get this problem solved directly? You know, usually it will takes several days to receive the backup keyborad, I can't wait
You'll have to phone the service center and ask. (When I lived not far from Lenovo's Canadian service center and wanted to bring in a ThinkPad for warranty repair they said that would be OK with them but my unit would be put on a queue the same as if I'd shipped it in. They simply didn't offer walk-in, while you wait service.)
In the interim it may or may not be possible to reattach the key, even just temporarily, depending on whether it wasn't put on properly at the factory or if it's physically broken in some way. Or you could use an external keyboard until Lenovo sends you a replacement, etc.
I've just call the local service center, he told me that he can not repair individual key, they can just replace the whole keyboard..... How bad luck I am!!!

  • Freezing after use with Itrip

Anybody experience their ipod freezing after using an itrip. Mine is now frozen! Nightmare. Ihave tried to reset it but nothing happens after the obligatory 6-10 secs. Any suggestions
    Andy

is it safe (for the cpu, I mean) opening the Power Mac when it's on? Or I should boot with leaving the door open?!? However I have just powered the Mac on, left it alone for 20 min with only Folding@home running, come back, open 2 windows on SeaMonkey... and the computer froze when closing down one window, and it took 3 restarts to boot this time: first time it just stuck at the grey screen with the darker shade of grey apple in the middle (with a strange grey horizontal line just over and left from the apple), 2nd restart it booted up to the desktop view, the mouse was working but I couldn't do anything apart from moving it around the screen, 3rd time is now... I don't think it's overheating (but still...). Thanks for the help.

  • [SOLVED] Getting freezes after using dwm for some time and exiting it

Hello, I have an Asus Ux51, with a fresh (less than a month) arch installation. If I recall correctly I had a couple of freezes in other occasions but I don't remember much about those so I rather focus on the only freeze I can more or less reproduce and I've been having lately. After using dwm for some time with a couple of programs opened (rTorrent, browser, and some terminals for instance), if I close dwm or just press the power button to shut down, it starts closing everything and either stays with a black screen, or hangs while X prints the log information. It's not always though, for example, if I just boot it, open dwm and close it without giving it much use it usually closes fine.
Tried googling a bit to see the usual ways to troubleshoot this but didn't get really far.

Found this recent thread in the forums, I'll give REISUB a try late, but the times it freezed I remember trying to blindly reboot it, or switching off virtual console and couldn't.
In case it's of any use, this is my # uname -a
    Linux arch 3.10.3-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 26 11:26:59 CEST 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Could it have something to do with the nvidia optimus setup that this laptop has? When installing arch I found out that there was no support yet for it so I'm just using the intel drivers (following what the arch wiki said).
Any ideas or advice to point me in the right direction would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't start st in my .xinitrc. I launch it from dmenu and usually everything is fine. If I launch it from dwm's internal command using Alt-Shf-Return, X freezes 100% of the time. A workaround was suggested by st's main developer to call st like this:
    static const char *termcmd[] = { "/bin/sh", "-c", "st", NULL };
but it didn't work for me.
Very rarely X will freeze anyway. I haven't been able to pin it down. When X fails, my journal returns this:

  • My iMAC sometimes freezes after installing Mavericks.

My iMAC sometimes freezes since installing OSX Mavericks.   I have to RESTART to get computer to respond to keyboard and trackpad. Anyone experiencing similar problems?

  • IMac 2007 freezes after sleep and then can't find hard drive after reboot.

I'm having a problem where my mid 2007 iMac (2.4 GHz core duo w/ 6 Gb of ram) freezes after sleep.  It seems to happen only when an application was open at the time of sleep.  The freeze manifests as the cursor turns into the spinning wheel, but the computer can't do anything.  Command-option escape doesn't work.  Most of the time after I reboot, the iMac can't find the hard drive.  If I leave the computer off for 15 minutes then it will reboot ok.  Is my hard drive going out or do I have another problem?  I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.5.  I've repaired permissions, verified the hard drive and reset the NVram but I still have the problem.

Here is the console right before the time of the crash.

  • My new ipad 2 freezes after using the internet for about 15 minutes. It is properly connected to the network and works fine after I re-start it but it is very annoying to have to re-start it every so often. All other laptops on the internet work fine.

My ipad 2 freezes when using the internet. Re-starting the ipad fixes the problem but it is very annoying to have to do this. I have tried all of the trouble shooting suggestions including re-joining the network. All other laptops work fine on my network. I think there is something wrong with my new ipad.

I recommend two things before taking your iPad back to the Apple Store.
    1.  Fully close safari, by going to your home screen, then double tapping your home button to bring up your most recently used Apps.  Using your finger, hold it on any of the used Apps until they jiggle.  At this point, you'll see a to the top left of each App.  Touch the sign on Safari, which will fully close it.
    Then.......
    2.  Reboot your iPad.  Press and hold BOTH the power and home buttons at the SAME time for at least 10 seconds (hold past the red slider to shut down) until the Apple Logo appears, then let go of both buttons and your iPad will restart.  You won't lose any settings or data.
If that does not help, then make an appointment at the Apple store to have your iPad checked.

  • My iMac 27'' freezes after I use iPhoto

I just bought my iMac27'' last week and I notice thta when I use iphoto it freezes the computer.

I can only say that the latest and all previous versions of iPhoto are very stable on both my iMac's, a 2006 1.83 GHz Core Duo and a 2010 Mac Mini, and that it shouldn't be happening. It is possible that there is either a hardware or software problem with your new iMac and/or Lion and I think that you should make an appointment with your local Apple Store or authorized retailer where you bought the iMac and have it checked out.

  • IMac G5 freezing after a day of being on.

    Hi all,
Ever since I upgraded to 10.4.9 my Mac has taken to freezing at some point between 24 and 36 hours after being turned on. Initially everything just stops. The clock stops, plus I'm unable to change applications or make any input at all (your regular freeze, or is that a "hang"?). However, if I'm running iTunes streaming radio, this continues. And I can still move the mouse cursor, but only for a while - this too soon freezes.
Other than the 10.4.9 update, there is no difference to the pre-problem state. It happens regardless of whether there are any applications running or not. It can happen at any time of day (though it's always a little over a day from being turned on when it happens), and the crash log (and other logs) reveal nothing. I thought it might be one of the programs that check for updates on a daily basis causing it, but I have changed all those settings to no effect. I have reinstalled the 10.4.9 update as well. I'm now running out of ideas of what could be causing it.
    Any ideas anyone?
The annoying thing is, whatever I try I have to wait for two days to see if it's had any effect!
    Thanks in advance!

    iMac G5 - 20" - 1.8GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi all,
Upon further (and very lengthy) investigation, I have discovered exactly what is causing my particular problem.
I use Skype and have a USB phone. It's the Ipevo free-1 USB phone that is causing the problem. When the phone is not plugged in, my iMac has stayed on without problem for over a week. As soon as the phone goes back in and the driver (Free-1 USB Phone 1.0.2.14) is launched, then within a day my iMac freezes.
I haven't yet discovered exactly what's happening to cause the freeze. I suspect it may have something to do with the log. My friend sent me the following link:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070507065945410
although this refers to different software and different hardware, it describes the same kind of problem.

  • Mid-2010 iMac randomly freezing after last Windows 7 update.  Help!  I am a teacher and have 50 computers all behaving the same way.

I am a teacher and have 50 mid-2010 iMacs running Windows 7 in my classroom.  The computers did a Windows 7 automatic update on or around April 15, 2014.  After that, each computer randomly freezes.  Some are worse than others.  Most of the computers freeze when a USB drive is plugged in and also when a pop-up shows up on the screen - especially the Java update.  I have installed the most current Bootcamp drivers and run several anti-virus program searches.  I've also tried the Microsoft Fix-it program and almost everything.  Uninstalling the updates did not help.  Can anyone help me out?

based on what you wrote this  doesn't make sense
use system restore to rollback the machine prior to this update

  • My iMAC often freezes after waking from sleep, or occasionally freezes at random. How do I stop this?

I have 10.6.8 on my iMAC. I have been shutting down my iMAC partly because I often get freezes a few seconds after the mac wakes. The freezes also occur at random. There is seldom any way to shut down the MAC except by pulling the power cord, though very rarely I am able to finally achieve a normal shutdown. I have tried fixing permissions as well starting in Safe Mode, and while these seemed to help at first, they no longer seem to have any affect.
I thought that maybe I got some kind of virus/trojan/etc., but from what I have read here that very likely is not the case.
I have also read here that the issue could be  "hardware."  Does this mean things like my printer or external speaker, or external hardrive? or does it mean the hardware of the computer itself? I have read about a "Hardware Test." Does this "Apple Hardware Test" have a benefit here in figuring out the problem?
Does anyone have any suggestions? I certainly can't keep 'pulling the plug,' and I know now from these discussions that shutting down (vs. sleep) on a regular basis is not best either for the imac. (I am loathe to upgrade to LION until I get this problem resolved, though, interestingly, I seem to see that a number of LION folks have the same or similar problem.)

    FussGus,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
What periherals, especially USB ones, do you have attached to your Mac? Does the problem persist with everything other than the Apple keyboard and mouse disconnected?
Does the problem persist if you Start Up in Safe Mode? If so, check what items are in /Library/StartupItems and /Library/PreferencePanes.
As generic advice for sleep-related issues:
For a Mac OS X with sleep problems (file names and locations are for 10.4.x):
    -- trash /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    -- trash /Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
-- reboot while resetting PRAM (restaqrt while holding down command-option-p-r until you hear three sets of chimes, then release the keys)
While not directly related, since your wakes before freezing, also refer to Computer Will Not Wake From Sleep

  • Clock freezes after using Apple DVD Player

I am having a small and annoying issue with the Apple DVD Player (v 4.6.5). This just started happening recently. Everytime I run a DVD (or video TS file, etc) on the software player-it performs as usual. After quitting the application and choosing to eject the disc, I notice there is a longer lag from when I first used the computer, then the little colored wheel of death spins, and eventually Apple DVD Player closes.
The problem, however, is after the application is closed out, my time freezes in the status bar in the upper right hand corner of the screen. (As I write this it says 1:16 and the time in the apple "date and time" preferences panel of OSX says it's 2:14-which is the real time) If I drag the cursor up to the time status bar in the upper right hand corner, it turns into the spinning color wheel, and back again once dragged out.
Once the computer restarts, the time in the upper right goes back to normal with no spinning wheel (until I open Apple DVD Player and quit out of it again). I know this is not an earth-shattering issue, but it is fairly annoying and abnormal. If anyone has suggestions, please help.

It sounds like you found your answer but I also wanted to mention that this is a known BUG when using DVD Player and the Digital Optical Out of a G5. If you look at activity monitor when the Clock is dead and you get the Beach Ball the SystemUIServer will be listed as not responding. If you Force quit this process everything should start working again. As long as the LoginWindow Process is running the SystemUIServer will restart when needed after the force quit.
HOWEVER, The other part of this bug with Digital Optical Out is that sometimes the LoginWindow Process will also stop responding. In this case a Log-Out is the only way to correct the problem. The third part of this bug is sometimes the Finder also stops responding but a Relaunch will fix that.
As I said it sounds like you found your problem but I wanted to post this incase others out there using the Digital Optical Out read this and don't correct their problem.
Also, If you were using the "DOO" by deleting the .plist will set the DVD player back to SYSTEM falsely making one think the problem is fixed.
Last I know this is a known bug because I submitted it as a bug to Apple and received an e-mail stating they know of this problem already.

  • IMac G3 freezing after changing startup disk?

    Hello.
I bought a iMac G3 I few months ago just for a hobby and have been playing around on it.
This morning I noticed two other previous system folders in the system folder.
I then opened "startup disk" (I think that is the name) and chose to restart with "Previous system folder".
When it re-booted it opened up differently, had a new background and made sound effects when clicking and scrolling.
I decided to change the startup disc to "Previous system folder1" (which is the other previous system folder)
This time when restarting it booted normally until the desktop icons loaded. The mouse and keyboard froze and then a message popped up saying "To use your internal modem you need to select the country from where you will be using your computer". I try to use the mouse and keyboard to select, "Australia" and then "OK" but as previously started the mouse and keyboard are frozen.
When booting up I can use the mouse and keyboard on the loading screen until it freezes when the desktop appears.
(The computer was working amazingly before I stupidly changed the system folder)
Why is this happening. How do I return to a previous system folder when it keeps freezing.
Here is a youtube video showing you what happens:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYURgG2W5x4
Please note, I do have all the software CD that came with computer, however for some reason discs won't work on the computer they are unrecognizable.
All keyboard commands do nothing for example holding down shift into safe mode still freezes.
    Thanks in advance!
    Stewart

I'm not sure what OS you are running here.
There is a way to set what os  boots from the firmware.  Not sure how.   Look tomorrow.  let me know via another post.
For classic, you could try hold the
    space bar
then booting. or is it the shift key?
If this is a slot loader, try:
The startup manager will list all of your bootable partitions then give you a choice of which to boot.  Hold down the option key then power on. Continue holding down the option key until you see the startup manager. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your hd or disc. Click on right arrow key.
Restore Tiger 10.4 & Leopard 10.5  DVDs are available from Apple by calling  1(800) 275-2273. Have your serial number ready. Have your credit card ready too.  There may be a small fee.

    Startup keys
    http://macs.about.com/od/macoperatingsystems/qt/osxstartupkeys.htm
I have a list of magical boot key sequences:
        Key Combinations-- Effect
        * mouse down -- Eject removable media ( I think Boot ROMs prior to 2.4f1 excluded the CD drive )
        * opt -- Bring up OF system picker on New World machines.
iMac g3 400 or newer machine
        * cmd-opt -- Hold down until 2nd chime, will boot into Mac OS 9 ?
        * cmd-x (or just x?) -- Will boot into Mac OS X if 9 and X are on the same partition and that's the partition you're booting from.
        * cmd-opt-shift-delete -- Bypass startup drive and boot from external (or CD). This actually forces the system to NOT load the driver for the default volume, which has the side effect mentioned above. For SCSI devices it searches from highest ID to lowest for a partition with a bootable system. Not sure about IDE drives.
        * cmd-opt-shift-delete-# -- Boot from a specific SCSI ID # (# = SCSI ID number)
        * cmd-opt-p-r -- Zap PRAM. Hold down until second chime.
        * cmd-opt-n-v -- Clear NV RAM. Similar to reset-all in Open Firmware.
        * cmd-opt-o-f -- Boot into open firmware
        * cmd-opt-t-v -- Force Quadra AV machines to use TV as a monitor
        * cmd-opt-x-o -- Boot from ROM (Mac Classic only)
        * cmd-opt-a-v -- Force an AV monitor to be recognized as one
        * c -- Boot from CD. If set to boot to X and no CD is present, may boot to 9.
        * d -- Force the internal hard disk to be the startup device
        * n -- Hold down until Mac logo, will attempt to boot from network server (using BOOTP or TFTP)
        * r -- Force PowerBooks to reset the screen
        * t -- Put FireWire machine into FireWire Target Disk mode
        * z -- Attempt to boot using the devalias zip from first bootable partition found
        * shift -- (Classic only) Disable Extensions
        * shift -- (OS X, 10.1.3 and later) Disables login items. Also disables non-essential kernel extensions (safe boot mode)
        * cmd -- (Classic only) Boot with Virtual Memory off
        * space -- (Classic only) Trigger extension manager at boot-up
        * cmd-v -- (OS X only) show console messages during boot
        * cmd-s -- (OS X only) boot into single user mode
    Did not work simply 'z'?
You could buy an external DVD drive. It needs to be firewire and bootable by Mac OS. If you have another PPC with firewire, you could try target Disk mode and installed tiger that way.
You need to figure out the level of your  firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
    What is Open Firmware?
The firmware on a PPC is called Open Firmware. Open Firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine.  It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of Mac OS.   It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chip on the logic board.
Figuring out what level of Open Firmware you have?
    1) Mac OS 9.x or 8.x, you need to use the Apple System Profiler.
    Apple -> Apple System Profiler
    2) Mac OS X, use the System Profiler.
    Apple -> About This Mac
click on the More Info... tab
    click on Hardware
    read the Boot ROM Version
    3) Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down command+option+o+f
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1395
You can download the firmware from this page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1283
    filename: N-iMac_FWUpdate_4.1.9.smi.bin
avoid   expanding the file on the download computer.
For a slot loading iMac, this article indicates that you need to be running 9.1 or later version of Mac OS Classic.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1283
"The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with slot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 or later writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior to following the update instructions."
You can download the Mac OS 9 updates from the Apple site.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1387?viewlocale=en_US
For tiger, you need 256meg of memory.  A slot loader will take 1gig of memory.
You may need to get more memory.
    get the 512meg card(s)

  • Curve 8330 Freezing After Using Desktop Manager

I recently downloaded and used the new Desktop Manager for Mac from RIM, and now my phone is freezing up. If I allow the screen to go dark the phone will freeze up and not respond, though it still recognizes the shift and alt keys (the icons appear in the upper right corner). I am at a loss for what to do. a hard or soft reset fixes it temporarily, but I don't have time to do a reset every time I want to use my phone.
    Please help!!!
