IMac G5 Freezing and mouse inoperable

iMac G5 frequently freezes where I am not able to click on anything. The mouse arrow will move around but I get no response when trying to click on anything.
Also, at times the mouse arrow will dissapear when I'm moving it around. Are these two problems connected?
I've already tried moving the mouse usb from the keyboard to the back of monitor. That doesn't help. Also I've noticed when it's frozen, the time and day is not on the top right corner.

Continuing from the other thread...
Try an SMU reset. if you have the Rev B (ALS) or iSight G5 model see this link:

If you have the original Rev A G5 model see this link:

These are the iMac (early 2006) forum. For better informed responses to your question try posting in the appropriate IMAC G5 Forum here: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=881
Although from what you say (freezing up randomly, inability to click mouse), it sounds like a bad memory stick. Did you, by any chance, put additional RAM on your machine? Check the memory in system profiler to make sure they are all ok.
As for the mouse pointer moving around uncontrollably, try a solid colored mousepad, as some mousepads with stripes and intricately colored designs tend to "throw off' or confuse the optical lens of your mouse.

  • My iMac screen freezes and a grey colour slowly creeps down my screen

Hi, my iMac screen freezes and a grey colour slowly creeps down the screen and has a large black square in the centre saying "You must restart your computer by pressing the power button and then pressing it again to restart" or words to that effect in English and about 4 or 5 other languages.  I find this happens more frequently when I try to stream movies or tv shows.  It also happened when I was trying to download a couple of tv shows from iTunes.
It also sometimes makes a wierd sound a kind of loud noise like a record stuck in a groove.  This has happend many times since upgrading to Lion.  I hear a lot of people on here talking about their screens going completely black and not responding.  I believe that mine has only gone black a couple of times and I couldn't wake it up from "sleep mode" with the mouse or keyboard.  I don't know if this is also happening to other people, but my bluetooth keyboard keeps disconnecting all the time since the upgrade as well, it's driving me nuts!!  Plus my wifi will show that it is fully operational, however, I can't use the internet when I wake my computer from sleep mode.  I have to click on wifi and turn wifi off then on again before i can use it.
Is Apple going to come out with a fix or are we going to eternally suffer indefinitley.

    Hi Eric,
I don't know why it didn't work before, but here is the most recent errol log.  It crashed again about an hour later.  If there is a solution, i would greatly appreciate knowing what it is because I can't enjoy using my computer anymore because of these constant crasahes.
    Thanks for your time.

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer and try -
    <a href=http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 or http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
You can also cross post over in the Intel iMac area regarding your motherboard concerns.  Users who use the same model computer as yourself would know.

  • HT4855 iMac mail open and mouse has frozen on screen, new batteries in mouse..no change. turning iMac off and back on ..no change. need advice asap

Imac mail open and mouse has frozen on screen...please advise?

The Mac uses an "All devices active" philosophy with pointing devices and keyboards.
If you have additional pointing devices attached, especially a graphics tablet, it is still directing mouse operations at the same time as the mouse you have your hand on. The end result is the SUM of commands from all such devices.

  • IMac i7 Freeze and spinning ball of death

    Hiya
My iMac i7 froze me out this morning while I was using a USB memory stick.
The window went all corrupted looking and the spinning ball of death appeared.
How do you restart with a wireless keyboard and mouse, when nothing is clickable. (other than turning the power off) ? :-/

Press and hold the power button until it turns off, then start it again.

The time it took me to Log on to the forum all I can add is if the Drive is Active & the OP gets a Y/N prompt then select Y & reboot the PC.

  • IMAC screen freezes and goes blue....

this just started yesterday - I did not add any programs or update any software recently. I have since added Norton and scanned for viruses.
PROBLEM: my system freezes and the screen goes blue. It does not "wake" back up right away and after it goes blue a few times, it stays blue and I have to hard boot. If I leave the system off for about an hour, I'll get a few hours out of it before this happens.
DIAG: As stated above, I checked for viruses. I also ran all available diagnostics, and am fresh out of new ideas. Since I can't open my iMac without voiding the warrantee, I can't check for any possible burst or bulging capacitors. I disconnected all perperials and still have the same issue.
HYPOTHESIS: I am heavily leaning toward a hardware problem, but before I take the trip to the Apple store, I wanted to reach out to the forum to see if anyone else has had this problem?
This is an early 2006 Intel based 20" iMac that I have been running (24x7) since late August 2006. I never had an issue with my first iMac (pre-Intel).
    HELP!!!
    intel IMAC 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    silentpartner,
Unless your issues match a known problem, (wouldn't appear too likely if no result from the Apple Hardware Test) before Apple will accept your iMac for hardware repairs, you'll have to prove it's not a software issue by reinstalling the OS. FWIW, if it's a hardware issue and in particular if the hard drive needs replacing, you'll want to back up your important data anyway, prior to turning it in for any repair.

  • I just installed mac osx snow leopard in my iMac. windows freeze and unfreezes.

Help needed again. I just installed mac os x snow leopard on my imac. sometimes when I open a window it freezes and then suddenly unfreezes until the next time. the tool bar does not identify what program is opened when frozen. It says finder instead
Thanks for everyones help. It has made a huge difference. I hope this is the end of my issues with this new OS.

Have you run Software Update several times to ensure you've picked up all available updates after upgrading to Snow Leopard?

  • Imac 20" keyboard and mouse not working

Friend has a 20″ imac 2007 usb ports don’t seem to be working can’t use keyboard or mouse, anyone any idea how to get into the system to use a hardware test disc or install disc
Power seems to be going to the mouse as the red light emits from the bottom.

has anyone resolved this problem? I haven't been able to get my usb ports to work on my 2007 24" imac. it suddenly stopped responding to keyboard and mouse. during bootup, i can use the keyboard to select boot volume and/or target mode. keyboard and other usb peripherals work fine on other computers. so this indicates that the keyboard is ok, the usb port themselves are ok, but something happens during bootup that causes the computer to stop listening to the usb ports.
i've tried the smc and pram reset procedures with no luck.

  • IMac was freezing and now wont start?

My iMac was running a little slow the past 2 days, and whenever i tried to type something in safari it would bring up the loading wheel and take forever just to type something. I installed google chrome and it kept happening so it's not safari. Next my mac started freezing and i would have to just turn it off and restart it. Turning it back on it would load sometimes but take awhile, sometimes it wouldnt load so i'd turn it off and try again until it worked.
now when i turn it on the gray/white screen comes up with the apple, but no loading thing comes up under that. after a few minutes the apple gets replaced with a circle with a line through it. After about 5 minutes of not starting, a blinking folder with a question mark starts flashing and it does this until i turn off the computer.
soooo, what is wrong? how do i fix this? is there another way to start the computer?

i put in my snow leopard install disk and then restarted using my internal hard drive and it worked fine for a few hours. Then it crashed again and now it's doing it again and cant find my internal hard drive. I have most my stuff stored on an external hard drive but does this mean i have to buy a new computer? or a new internal hard drive? how much would that be and for them to install it? stupid macs, i thought they were supposed to work better than PC's. Or is your hypothesis wrong since it did start up after you said it was dead.
It does sound like your hard drive is failing and needs to be replaced. Mac hard drives are the same products as they are in PCs and they ALL fail, on average a HD should last 3-5 years however some last months and some last 6-8 years. So there isn't any reason to be angry at Apple. Make sure you are backed up and make an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP. A replacement hard drive will probably run in the $200-$300 range including labor.

  • Brand new iMac 21", freeze. Mouse movies, but does nothing

We just opened a brand new iMac 21" literally yesterday (purchased within the last three weeks). It was on for about an hour with no problems whatsoever. Then, while transferring photos to iPhoto, the system interface randomly froze. You can move the mouse around the screen, but it does nothing. You can't click anything. Hard resets/shutdowns result in the system rebooting back to the desktop like normal, but the mouse stays in this semi-frozen state. You can movie the pointer, but you can't actually interact with anything to fix the problem. Nothing brings it out of this state. We're not terribly experienced with Macs (new owner) and also snowed in to boot.
Has anybody encountered problems like this before? How do I fix this freeze?

My suggestion with a new Mac that is having those problems is to take it back to the Apple Store and ask them to fix it. Beside allowing them to solve the problem that will also give them the chance to document the problem with your Mac just in case it should happen again.

  • Imac G5 freezes, but mouse works.  Wierd pixels right before it freezes.

Hello everyone (Miriam, I hope you find this post).
    Problem:
I have an older imac G5 (20" - without isight). Worked fine for the longest time, then lately it started freezing at main screen. Mouse pointer works, but nothing is accessible. First, started freezing after 5-10 minutes of use. Then, in the span of a few days, it locked up right after entering the main screen (after blue apple screen startup).
    What I did so far:
Following the imac manual, I did a hardware test after reading about logic boards and power supply issues. Used hardware utility from startup disc and everything passed. Therefore, I reasoned that it was a software issue.
Next, I used disc utilities to repair a few permissions and HD volume. Minor repairs done. Started getting passed blue OS loading screen, but still freezing at main screen.
Finally, I tried to reinstall my OS, using archive/install feature (don't want to fully reformat because I can't access files to back up). First disc - no problems. When it asked for second disc, comp froze again. Now, it freezes at blue screen, before blue apple loads the OS. Can't even get to main screen anymore. Tried it again, but same deal.
    Question:
Any suggestions before I take it to apple? My warranty has long since expired, so I'm afraid of incurring large fees. I would try a full reformat, but there are certain files I need to backup, but can't do so due to the inability to even open a folder. Also, it'd be greatly appreciated if someone could point me to a thread relating to backing up files when comp freezes, therefore main screen inaccessible. If I could back up certain files, I could do a full HD reformat, then report the results here.
Not sure if this matters, but my imac version was one of the models that needed the free extended warranty for the power/capacitor issues. Repaired for free, no problems until now. Also, fan spins hard during startup, but very quiet during gray apple load screen - then freeze at blue screen. No hardware or software added recently.
Sorry for such a long post. I figured the more detailed the info., the better the responses would be. Thanks again Miriam for the redirect. I'm indebted to you!

I hate to say this, but the pixel anomalies indicate a faulty V RAM chip, which is soldered to the logic board
You may have more that one problem, the pixels being one, and the hard drive and/or the PSU being another.
At this point, you probably need to take it in and have it looked at, then you will have to decide whether it's worth repairing, or whether you will just get a new one.
In any case, please let me know what happens,
