Imac G5 having Startup Problems

First of all I like to say I've heard many wonderful things about the imac, but this has not been my experience so far after just purchasing an imac this weekend.
This particular imac has a problem with startup. On the second day of experiencing this mac it would not startup and would freeze at the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning wheel. I also heard intermittent crackling noise coming from the lower left side, by the apple logo. After waiting for about 10 minutes with nothing happening, I turned it off by holding the power button. I proceeded to turn it back on and it booted up fine the second time. Chatted w/apple support and they told me to remove some startup files and empty my cache in the finder library.
The third day(today) my mac booted up fine, but when I went to open up the system preferences I got the color wheel that kept spinning, and the crackling noise again. Had to hold down power button again to shut down. After turning on a second time it seemed to work just fine.
Now I had to return the first Imac I purchased a week earlier because it kept freezing on me since the day I got it (note I did have the wireless keyboard and mouse). Needless to say the mac I have now has wires. I called the store from where I purchased it from and the person on the phone told me it was most likely that my ram was not seated properly when they installed it. Don't they do checks on this before they hand it over to you? Somebody please tell me that macs are better than this, of course I don't know if I'll believe you at this point.
So does anybody have any idea what is going on with my mac.

Sorry, I don't have a solution, but came here with a similar problem - two days ago I took my brand new G5 out of the box and it crashed immediately after the Setup Assistant told me I could "GO" - I got a Restart message, and it's been randomly crashing ever since. The diagnostics show no problems with the hard drive or RAM, or display, or anything! No apparent reason. Now I'm forced to go to Apple Care voice jail...good thing I kept my trusty G3 running, I have separation anxiety, it has been SO GREAT, but running OS8.6, can't go on forever.

  • IMac is having font problems

I've been having issues with fonts on my iMac for some time.  Every time I upgrade my OS, it screws up my copy of Word.  It keeps getting stuck on optimizing fonts and crashes.  I empty the cache and it works ok for awhile.  But I don't dare try to install any new fonts, one, it cases Word to crash again, and two, the font doesn't even show up on the font lists.  So I am thinking I need to gut the entire thing and start over.  However, one Fonts folder keeps giving me a message about aliases when I try to open it.  And the three other Fonts folders won't delete, saying OS X needs them.  My MacBook is having no problems.  There are three Fonts folders, and they all seem to be working.  I've upgraded the OS on that, and it doesn't screw up Word.  So what should I do with the iMac?  Do I get rid of all the Fonts on it and start over?  Can I fix this folder that keeps talking about "alias"?  I just want it to work like my MacBook does.

I tried using a new user account to download/install several things (including a maintenance program, which I ran) and was able to do it on that user account, then switched back over to my user account and downloaded/installed an update that I hadn't been able to and it seemed like everything was better.
But I am still getting the "update server" error where I can't install updated from the apple icon on my computer. And Safari not working.
Yes, I bought my mac from an Apple retailer, new in box.

  • IMac G5 having various problems

Okay, I really need help from the Mac experts out there. My iMac is doing several strange things:
    1. Can't download software updates...it either says that it can't download because the software may have been tampered with or that it can't connect to the update server (when internet connection is fine)
    2. Safari won't connect to the internet. (but Firefox will)
    3. Can't download anything big. I get one of several errors when I try to download anything significant. I either get "invalid checksum", "unrecognized format" or "codec overrun".
Can anyone please help me? I have tried not using my wireless D-Link router and instead using the internal router and that didn't change anything so I guess it's not a router issue.
    The model is: WDC WD1600JD-40HBC0

  • Startup Problems After Upgrade to 10.4.8

Six weeks ago I upgraded my RAM by adding a 1Gb chip, and after checking to see that the added memory was recognized, I installed OS X 10.4.6 from my purchased DVD. I was then prompted to update to 10.4.8. For the first three weeks I used my iMac G5 with no problems. Then, with no apparent changes having been made, I began having Startup problems with my iMac. Every Statup go like this after pushing the Power button:
    1) I get alternatively a black screen or the gray Apple screen frozen
    2) I use the Power button to Shut Down, then Start with the Power button and get the gray Apple screen with cascading text error messages
    3) I Shut Down and Start as in 2 while holding the Option-Command-P-R and get Desktop, but my applications repeatedly Quit Unexpectedly (Safari, Explorer, iTunes, etc.)
    4) I Restart from the Apple Menu and get the Desktop and my applications usually work without Quitting.
I tried re-installing from my OS X 10.4.6 DVD (Archive and Install), but I get errors when the Installer gets to Prepare the Disk. Can anyone tell me what else I can do, or do I need to contact Apple Support?? Thanks,
    ktanzoak

  • Startup Problem & "Zapping the Pram"

Okay, I'm having startup problems, and I did the Command/Option/P/R startup.
Next, I know that Command S, or Option S, something like that should take me to a startup equivilant of Disk Utility. It's been so long, I forgot what to do. I searched but cannot find the answer.
    Hopefully someone here can help.
    Thanks.

Try booting in Safe Mode by holding the the shift key immediately after powering on your system. Safe boot mode will for a directory check of your startup volume, then load only the required kernal extensions (kext files), and deletes some cache files. Once the system boots into Safe Mode you can simply restart the system to see whether the issue has been resolved.
If you still have the issue try resetting the SMC by shutting down the system and disconnecting the power cord for ~15 seconds, then reconnecting the power cord. Next, reset the parameter RAM (PRAM) by holding down the option-option-P-R keys after powering ON the system. Wait until the iMac restarts twice, then let the system boot normally.

  • I have an iMac and iphoto.  Currently I am having a problem with an album in iphoto.  When I double click on the album all I get in the main body of the screen is a triangle with an exclamation mark and my 2 photos show at the very bottom of the window.

I have an imac and am using iphoto.  Currently I am having a problem with one particular album which shows in the main part of the window a triangle with an exclamation point.  The two photos are at the bottom of the main window in the same area where the "info" "edit" "create" area is.  I can see the two photos but I can not get them back into the main part of the window.  I can't drag them anywhere either.  I can't double click or right click on either of the two photos either. All I can do is click on either one and they get a little bigger.  Before I saw the exclamation point in the main body of the window all I get is two squares with nothing in them and the entire border is made up of dashes.  Can someone help me?

Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
                                            Screenshot is for iPhoto 9
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Sorry, possibly you need a new hard drive or try reformating. First
you can try something like http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/  it has been known to repair disk that DiskUtility could not. YMMV and they don't give it away.
If Disk Warrior can not repair then you need to Reformate the drive. Make sure you have a back-up in place no matter what.

iv unistalled flash, iv checked plug ins it just wont work,

It would have been a great help to know precisely what Mac you have, so some of the following may not apply:
You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version,10.3.183.23 or later, is for Intel Macs only running Tiger or Leopard, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Version 11.4.402.265 or later is for Snow Leopard onwards.
(If you are running Mavericks: After years of fighting malware and exploits facilitated through Adobe's Flash Player, the company is taking advantage of Apple's new App Sandbox feature to restrict malicious code from running outside of Safari in OS X Mavericks.)
    * Unhelpfully, if you want the last version for PPC (G4 or G5) Macs, you need to go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html  and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications (including Safari) first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
After installing, reboot your Mac and relaunch Safari, then in Safari Preferences/Security enable ‘Allow Plugins’. If you are running 10.6.8 or later:
When you have installed the latest version of Flash, relaunch Safari and test.
If you're getting a "blocked plug-in" error, then in System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
click Check Now. Quit and relaunch your browser.
You can also try these illustrated instructions from C F McBlob to perform a full "clean install", which will resolve the "Blocked Plug-in" message when trying to update via the GUI updater from Adobe.
Use the FULL installer for 12.0.0.44:  Flash Player 12 (Mac OS X)
And the instructons are here: Snow Leopard Clean Install.pdf
(If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, try the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the version 11.5.502.55:)
Download this http://scriptogr.am/nordkril/post/adobe-flash-11.5-for-powerpc to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

I am having a problem moving files from an imac in one location to an imac inanother location.  I have tried using Dropbox which is installed in both locations but when i drad a file ino yhe app it becomes an alias.  When I get to the other location it says I can't open the file because the " original application that created it is not present".  This is despite the fact that the app that created both files is installed in both computers.  If I use the Public folder in the idisc, when I get to the other location the file isn't there.  Am I forgetting to turn something on or off?  Should I manually sync the Public folder and if so how? • 24" iMac having startup issues

I thought I would post here in an effort to try and see if there is anything else I can do before heading to an Apple Store tomorrow. I own a 24" iMac, which I got in the fall 2006. A few weeks ago, this problem first occurred. The computer started up and the chime sounded then it got to a gray screen with an Apple logo and a spinning wheel below it. Then the spinning wheel would freeze. Then the screen would go black. I don't quite remember how I got the computer working again after the first time this happened (probably one of the solutions below), but I did and now the same problem has occurred today and I cannot figure out any way to fix it.
    Solutions I have tried today:
    1) Unplugged AC adapter and let computer alone for 30 secs and then plugged in and restarted. Nothing changed. Computer froze as describe above.
    2) Unplugged all the peripherals and restarted. Nothing changed. Computer froze as describe above.
    3) I reset the SMC by removing the SO-DIMM modules and reinstalled them. Nothing changed. Computer froze as describe above.
    4) I reset the PRAM and NVRAM by holding command option P R. Nothing changed. Computer froze as describe above.
    5) I tried booting from the OSX Install disk. It would not do so. Computer froze as describe above. Computer froze as describe above.
    6) I tried starting up holding C and it actually gave me the option of selecting the hard drive. But then it froze as described above.
So far, I plugged in a firewire cable and am using my MacBook to backup files so I can access the computer and its various files via this FireWire Target Mode.
Does anybody have any further suggestions before I take it in to an Apple Store?
    24" iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Add me to the list on of startup problems with my 24" iMac. First off the computer seemed to be slowing up and some of my icons were disappearing.....labels were still there but not the icon. Then I tried installing the 10.4.9 upgrade. Big mistake.......it wouldn't completely install even when I used the standalone installation. Kept getting errors and the try again message.
So after all of this, the computer would not boot up from the hard drive or from the install DVD. Fortunately, I have a external startup drive and eventually I was able to get the computer to startup from that drive. From there I was able to startup from the install CD DVD. I tried to repair Disk but it failed because of an error and I am now doing an install and archive while I write this. Keeping my fingers crossed.
This is my second iMac that I have had startup problems. With my last iMac, it was the hard drive......Apple replaced it and the computer works fine.(my wife is now using that computer) It was during my problems then that I learned it is helpful to have an external startup drive. I operated that iMac from the external startup drive a couple of months before I took it in for repair.
Oh boy, the first install DVD just finished and it won't eject and now I have the message "there were errors installing the software" Try again.
Complete frustration...........I will try the installation once more and then probably a clean install if that doesn't work.
