IMac G5 is Very Slow and Sluggish

My 2004 iMac G5 w/o built in iSight is getting very slow. I maxed the Ram out a few years ago to 2GB, which helped. Alas, she is slowing down again. I have a 150GB capacity HD, with 138GB used or 12 GB free. Mostly iTunes, iPhoto and Mail related stuff on my computer.
A friend suggested that I should set-up a network drive on my Airport. Leaving all iTunes and iPhoto related files on the network and reformatting my internal drive to just run the OS.
Would this help?
Thanks

Indeed it would, your hard drive should have at least 10/15% free space, you are at the outer limit. Make sure the drive is Firewire, so that if you ever want to put the OS on it, you will be able to boot from it. I suggest getting a drive that is much, much larger than your internal, they are fairly inexpensive now, and partitioning it, so that one part can be used for media, and the other to clone your system. I use SuperDuper! which does a great job.

  • GT70 internet very slow and sluggish when waking from sleep

My GT70 sometimes is very slow and sluggish to respond when it is awoken from sleep mode. Browsers become unresponsive (hyperlinks don't register as links and require multiple clicks to respond) and internet gets very slow. Speedtest.net reports  .50-3mb/s when it is usually 24mb/s and above.  The hdd also thrashes about and won't calm down for what seems like an eternity.
This only happens when opening the lid after the machine sits idle for several hours. This is fixed by restarting the machine.
Does anyone know why this laptop would be behaving like this? it is very frustrating and makes sleep mode pretty much useless.
    cheers,

First thing I would do is get CPU-Z and open that after wake-up and seeing if the CPU is running at the speed expected, or if it's stuck at some lower speed.
thanks for the reply. will try that next time it happens.

My Iphone 6 (8.1.2) is very slow and sluggish to response whenever it is connected any bluetooth devices ex. my car audio or bluetooth headsets
The moment I disconnect the bluetooth , the phone turns normal again. This happens when i awaken the phone and try to access the home screen, this takes almost 4 to 5 seconds at times.
Is anyone facing similar issues, Please advice

  • IMac is very slow and sluggish, keeps churning when editing files or on internet

My iMac is running slow and sluggish, it takes several minutes to edit a word document or search the internet ... intermittently it runs great but productivity is near zero when to edit a sentence in a Word document takes several minutes.  When typing an email the cursor stops and if you keep typing it eventually fills in what was typed even though you can't see it when typing. Ran Etrecheck ... report is attached.

  • My iMac suddenly runs very slow and freezes frequently.  Ideas?

My iMac has started running very, very slow and then suddenly freezes and we have to reboot.  I have no idea how to fix that....

    Charly,
That's not much info to go on.  Sorry you are having a problem.....
I can suggest a couple of things....
    Go to "Applications>Utilities>DiskUtility"
..... run "First Aid" as shown in red boxes below....
This just might help... at least it is a start.....
I routinely use a little clean/maintenance utility called "OnyX" it performs lots of good house keeping stuff...
If this dosen't help you are going to have to ask someone smarter that I am......Again, it is a starting point at least.........
    Good luck......

  • My iMac starterd up very slow and when it did it has a white screen with little black dots on it

    Hello,
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
    iStat Menus...
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
    And/or iStat Pro...
    http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Imac 2008 running very slow and unresponsive - HD issue???

I think i already know the answer to this question but before I shell out here is my issue.
I have an 2.8 Extreme with a 500gb HD. It’s the 2008 model. Ive had it from new and rarely has been switched off on the last 6 years.
In the last few week it started to slow down to the point that typing was an issue and the beach ball would spin during all activity
As my mac never really switches off I didn’t think it was the maintenance scripts but forces these via Onyx and also reset the machine unplugging everything, holding down P on restart etc etc.
When doing this the machine would then not restart, it chimed ok, but would power on to the grey screen with apple logo and then shut down. ( A loading bar would also appear)
The only way to get the machine back up and running ( in its slow state) is to start in recovery mode and load form a time machine back up - Once done it restarts ok and you can use it but it is still very very slow.
I have used Disk utility in normal working mode and it says the disk cannot be repaired and try it from recovery mode. I have run DU in recovery mode and it say the disk cannot be verified or repaired and to back up. The mac then unmounts the disk.
I thinking HD issue and was going to swap it out for one of these.

Or could it be something else?
    Thanks in advance

It certainly sounds like a hard drive failing to me. Try a Safe Boot to see if the system can repair itself

If not the try running the Apple a Hardware Test to see if it reports an error http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

Uninstall Avast, you don't need software like it and such software can cause performance issues. See the first reply in this thread: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=32538.0. After it's removed, reboot.

  • All Adobe apps very slow and sluggish on my rMBP late 201

    Hello,
I'm using Adobe for a few years now.
Since october last year i purchased Adobe CC and bought myself a beautiful retina Macbook Pro 15" late 2014 with the nVidia gt750m 2GB.
I use Photoshop, Indesign and Photoshop the most. And what ever i do. I run into slow performance and slugginess. It's laggy even on an empty document. Its really breaking my patience as it slows me down in my school projects. What can I/we do to fix it?
I really need this. I switched from windows to Apple for the better workflow and performance, but i keep asking myself if it was a smart decision.. Not that i am thinking of buying a windows again lol. But i need to get this fixed. I don't think a simple barely filled artboard should be a problem for a 2500$ macbook....
I hope we can fix this or at least better the performance. Any little degree of improvement would help a lot!
    Kind regards,
    Gino

Adobe knows, photo1257.  Chris Cox is no ordinary poster.  He's a top Adobe engineer who's been writing Photoshop code since the last millennium./
Apple typically doesn't get a major release right until around the dot four release. Yosemite has a bit of a long way to go before it's at 10.10.4 or 10.10.5 update—or they may decide to leave it to OS X 10.11.x.  You pay the price of being an early adopter.
As far as for information, copy and paste the entire System info—minus your serial number—from the Help menu.  Help > System Info.
NOTE that I do not work for Adobe.
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
Note that this is boilerplate text.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
A screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).

  • Mac Pro 8-Core 2.8 Very Slow and sluggish

Maybe someone here can point me in the right direction.
    My Mac Pro:
    2x 2.8GHz Quad Core Xeons
    2 GB of Ram (800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM)
    2 x 500 GB HD (Seagate)
    1 x 1TB Wester Digital Black
    512M NVidia GeForce 8800GT
Has been running ridiculously slow. I have wiped the the main HD and re-installed everything from scratch, and it still has show no improvement. I work a lot with Photshop CS4 and Final Cut Studio 3, and the performance on my MacBook Pro 2.8 Unibody, is better than the Mac Pro.
I've run all the utilities to verify the drives, and I've also run TechTool Pro and it passed all the tests.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have always said the RAM shipped with is only enough to boot, otherwise, consider that an anemic diet. Also, 8 DIMMs is faster and has more bandwidth.
    But -- it should 'work.'
Then again, I'd pull Seagate drives.
I have posted a lot of tips and threads on how to optimize photoshop, and depending on file size etc you start with 6-8GB RAM, add a good fast(er) scratch volume.
Migrated from another system? or did full clean install of all apps?
That is another source of trouble.
The outer 1/3 of your 1TB Black is your best performance storage.
    Ideal:
    8GB or more
SSD for boot drive, another for scratch, or use 10K drives, least but still better are 640GB or 1TB WD Blacks - four of 'em maybe stripe the whole setup.
Boot drive: generally keep everything off it, no data or media, spotlight is off, primary scratch is pointed elsewhere, and that would be stripe array.
Seagate: do some benchmark tests maybe if you need to verify if they are sluggish. Or just use them for emergency system backups.

  • Slow and Sluggish ITouch when Connected to ITunes

I am running IOS 6.0.1 on an ITouch with a capacity of 28.5 GB and it has 1.968 songs on it. When I connect ITunes 11.0.1.12 and try to access, my songs "get info" to change album titles or anything else that you can modify, the ITouch gets very slow and sluggish. It takes 3-4 minutes to move from tab to tab or song to song. Is there a fix for this? I've searched the community with no success. Am I the only one having this issue? Also, even though I have the box ticked to "start ITunes when Ipod is attached", this never happens and I have to manually open it. Thanks.

With the iPod connected to the computer click on the iPod under Dvices in iTunes. A screen will show . Usually the Summary pane comes up first.  Near the top of the sreen are the heading for the various panes (Summary, Info,....Podcast, Books, Photos.  Clcik on the pOdcast one.  Near the tops ar check boxes.

  • I have an iMac4.1 and my iPhoto is very slow and the thumbnails correspond to the wrong pictures.  How do I fix this? Or is my iMac too old?  Will getting a new iMac solve this problem?.

I have an iMac4.1 and my iPhoto is very slow and the thumbnails correspond to the wrong pictures.  How do I fix this? Or is my iMac too old?  Will getting a new iMac solve this problem?
I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem.  Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos?  Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?

The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

I would try a Safe Boot  OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support be paitient it takes longer. When its booted up you can just restart normally.
Forcing shutdowns can cause disk corruption. Even though EtreCheck doesn't report any disk errors I would run Disk Utility from your recovery partition (Command-R restart) and repair the startup disk and repair permissions.
I also recommend removing the BlackBerry software, it's been known to cause problems.

I have noticed that my iMac 0SX is VERY SLOW.  I would like to clean it up.  I have been receiving pop-ups from TUNEUP MY MAC.  They want $40 to supposedly clean up my computer and make it run smoother and quicker.  Any reviews? Any suggestions?

DO NOT repeat DO NOT download or install any performance applicaiton's of any type. This is a scam and should be avoided. You haven't told us anything about your computer such as the version of OS X installed or how it's configured. I would recommend downloading and running an EtreCheck report so we can get a better idea about your system. You can find Etrecheck by clicking:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Run it's report then post it back to this forum.
