IMac G5 (iSight) 20" fails to start.
My wife's now out of warranty iMac G5 (3rd generation with built in iSight) is in trouble. I'm unsure what went wrong, but it won't stay powered on for longer than a minute or two. The OS doesn't even have time to boot up before power is cut off. It hangs at the gray screen and then powers down.
I've removed all peripherals and only have the USB keyboard and mouse plugged in. Zapping the PRAM and reseting NVRAM were not successful in solving the problem either.
I tried starting in single-user mode, but I wasn't able to get any farther, although I did get some info (see below). The last message it displays (repeatedly) is "USBF: 55.798 OHCI driver: OHCIRootHubPortPower bit not sticking (0) Retrying."
From some web research, it seems that there may be pre-existing issues with the power supply, but that may apply more to the 1st and 2nd generation models. The iMac G5 Repair Extension Program did not apply to my model/serial number. I am, however, just 3 months out of AppleCare.
Here's the remainder of the information I was able to get by photographing the screen before power cut out:

Any thoughts on what this could be? Based on the info above, it seems like there's a power issue...
Don't mess with the iSight, it's particularly difficult to open, although it can be done, but only if you are very sure of your skills. If you are confident, however, go for it!
You can buy a replacement at [welovemacs.com] and here are some ideas on how to do it:

IMac G5 (iSight model) won't start up - video included
http://s1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc449/langdonX1/?action=view¤t=imac071 .mp4
An imac 1.9Ghz G5 won't boot up at all. When you press the power button you hear a sight whirr and then a faint high pitched hum. Sometimes the power light turns on for a second in unison with the attempt. I tried to reset the SMU but that did nothing.
I took the cover off and saw nothing obvious wrong.
At the 3 and 8 second mark in the video you can hear the sounds it makes but you may have to turn up the volume.
Is this symptomatic of a dead power supply or some other problem? Any solutions to get it working again?from your linked article:
This article does not apply to iMac G5 (iSight) computers.
iMacs with an iSight have no back to them. You remove the face of the computer to access the logic board and the screen has to be removed to get to that. So all that stuff in the apple knowledgebase article can't be done to this model. -
IMac G5 (iSight) Black Screen and Won't Start...HELP!
Hi,
I have an iMac G5 (iSight) PPC, 2005, model 1145. All was running well until a couple of weeks ago (see post/thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/16191999#16191999), when I had an issue with a grey screen, no start, and spinning wheel. Through a series of replies, it was determined that I probably had a corrupt file in the OS (10.5.8). I did an Archive and Install of the OS and all was running very smoothly....until....NOW!!!!!!!
At this point, I cannot start up at all. When I turn on the computer, I get a 'light', but in a few moments, the fan gets loud, stays loud, and the screen is just black.
I tried to start up from my Leopard Disk, hoping I could run the utility....but that didn't work....AND NOW I've the install disk stuck in the drive!!!!!
I also thought it might just be some bad RAM, so I took that out and tried to start up again, but that didn't work either.
At this point, I'm clueless and hope that someone might be able to offer some good advice.
Thanks,
SandieJust repaired my iMac G5 with complete boot failure, it all came down to capacitors, there was an industry wide use of sub standard/sub spec capacitors at the time the imac G5 was manufactured, due to a manufacturer using a capacitor recipe missing one ingredient, This caused the imac G5's to fail at a much faster rate than they should have done, I had to replace half the capacitors in the power supply and 5 of the higher rated capacitors nearest the power supplies internal vent onto the logic board once this repair was affected, my machine worked perfectly.
take the cover of the back of you imac G5 and see whether your imac version has some led diagnostic lights and check whether the power diagnostic led light lights up properly when started, there are tutorials for this on the web also a light there that indicates whether gpu is communicating with the display properly. all led internal green lights should light up, apart from the right hand one of the four.
with your dark screen and sleep light on symptoms it seems quite likely a surface mount BGA graphics chip failure, but to be honest it could also be a capacitor related issue, if your not into stripping the machine down and soldering capacitors then the machine for you is probably a right off, just try a pram reset boot before giving up, I had similar sleep light no boot scenario on a macbook pro, and a full stripdown got it booting again.
the power supply in the imac G5(als version at least) gets very hot and has no fan of its own and is dependant on the one internal left hand open motherboard fan for its cooling in my opinion it gets too hot, there is also no temp sensor for the power supply to give you an indicator as to how hot its getting, I feel the the heat venting from the overheating power supply internally is what cooked the capacitors nearest it, this is a flaw in the design of this machine. One way to reduce this issue is to perhaps use some kind of extra fan control software to boost the based speed of motherboard fan, whilst at the same time placing and extra entry quality pc fan thin filter foam on intake underneath to prevent any extra dust intake because of the fan speed increase so as to protect the machine from clogging with extra dust and heating the power supply further -
iMac G5 (iSight) with 10.4.11: Screen always dimmed. Starts at full bright and a second later dimms and stays like that forever. Brightness controls work normally under this circunstance. Please help !!!
Please don't tell me to adjust anything on the preferences, since I have tried all. I think it may be anoter kind of problem, maybe hardware related or anything.
I ran the Hardware repair DVD and everything was ok, but when the imac restarted the screen was very lit again, but when it went sleep, when it went awake again the screen got dimmed again. Because of that I think that the problem could be software related, but who knows. Excuse my english.I can't see another possible answer - the longer your machine is up, the more the power supply is stressed, it protects itself by dimming the screen to lower the draw on it.

Snow leopard iMac fails to start up have time machine - what next?
I have an iMac which is powering up the showing a spinning icon and the apple logo. But it goes no further. I have tried presiing shift on start up and zapping the pram but no improvement.
For a while the iMac has been failing to start up but always did second time round.
What is the strategy here? I have an external drive with time machine backups and the snow leopard install disks. I also have access to extra external hard drives and a mac mini.
What would you recommend and what is the issue?Hi ukcfuser;
Where is Time Machine backing up to?
Hopefully not your system disk because it may have filled it up which can prevent you Mac from starting.
I would suggest that you boot from the install DVD for your Mac. Let us know that results of that.

Safari fails to start and crashes
Today I tried to open a link from an Apple ap-store email and Safari failed to open and reported a crash error message, It worked great yesterday? I searched through the forums and tried a few of the listed fixes but nothing has worked for me. So far the most complex attempt was deleting the webpageicons.db file, it did not help. I placed the webpagicons.db file back where it came from just incase. I have also tried to see if I have any plug ins running but Safari dosn't even load so I cant even get into the preferences options. I am very much a rookie with my iMac as I have rarely had any issues that needed support. This will be the first major trouble I have had with my mac since I bought it. I posted one of the error messages below, I have tried to open Safari nine times and each time it closes out without starting. Any help would be greatfull, thank you in advance.

I think I was able to get Safari to uninstall properly this time, I was prompted for a password and it shows in the trash can now. However after trying to reinstall it still errors out at the very end of the install and asks me to contact the software manufacturer? Ugh...
Andy,
Here is the text from console, sorry its a long one for only 20 min. of up time. I've never used console before wow is there a lot going on here... I grabbed the wrong log the first time and had to come back and edit... I also left some of the original text from the old log as it has a bunch of repeating FLASH reports that might mean something.

Hi everyone.
My iMac G5 iSight is freezing up on startup. It was running slowly and erratically, so I restarted it - ever since it has failed to start up.
It gets though the basic hardware check and gets to a point where there is the big apple logo and the circular pulsing thing that suggests it is loading - however it never gets any further.
I tried loading with a CD holding the c key -but that won't work. The CD drive revs up, but it gets stuck at the same location.
I've zapped the PRAM several times (twice each). No effect.
I've disconnected the keyboard and all peripherals.
I've removed the memory module I added 2 years ago.
So, I'm stuck. It doesn't look like complete hardware failure - or it wouldn't get as far is it does.
Is there any other way to force a reset of some kind that will allow me to boot from a CD?
Thanks in Advance.Check the Repair extension programs and look for your number. Whether you qualify also depends on how old your computer is. The extension cuts off three years after the original purchase date, but they have been known to make exceptions.

Imac 2009 with Mavericks will not start
In can only boot my Imac 27' (end of 2009) in safe mode.
The problem started in Lion, when the computer suddenly froze.
I upgraded (in safe mode) to Mavericks 10.9.2, took away all Launch Agents and Daemon that are not Apple (both in System and User's), done all the permission repairs, reset memory, fsck and turn the plug off the computer. The only thing I was not able to do is the hardware test (for some reason, the command + D to access the internet testing is not working). I have no external devices or cables attached.
My 2TB hard drive is divided in 3 partitions. I have got 2 user accounts.
I have tried a few other tricks from the experts in the discussion boards (including removing all preference files that are non apple, remove all non apple extensions), still no way to start up the computer other than safe boot.
I would like to try and turn off bonjour, as it seems like a MDNSResponder Error. But need a green light from any of you experts.
Currently, I only have a
I am posting the latest system log (on this one, I forgot to unplug the printer)
Please help !!!

May 4 20:45:38 localhost bootlog[0]: BOOT_TIME 1399247138 0You have insufficient capacity to use the Time Capsule for backup. You would need a 4 TB Time Capsule to be able to function properly as one given your internal's capacity.
Get an external hard drive that is 3 TB and use Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper after formatting it HFS Extended Journalled GUID partition and make individual partitions on the external to reflect the sizes of the internal. Make a fourth external partition to install the operating system onto and the backup software. Clone each partition at individual times to the same representative partition on the external.
If you need to archive information (i.e. not keep it on your original), burn it to CD, or archive it to USB Flash drive.
Make sure you have at least two copies of your data at all times.
Cloning makes the destination exactly like the original.
If turning off the backup capability of your Time Capsule does not fix the situation, and you are cloned to the external as I described, let us know, and we can isolate other possibilities. -
Hello, I have recently been having difficulty with two of our ARD Admin stations. The entirety of the networks in question are 10.4.10 with ARD 3.1 and are all PowerPC. When the Admin station (PPC iMac) tries to launch ARD we get the dialog that basically says ARD failed to start, and to try and reinstall or reboot the machine. Obviously neither works, which is why I am here.
I have followed this guide (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108021) to Uninstall ARD3. Since I had Client 3.1 installed, I had to open the ARD .mpkg to reinstall ARD. Before I re-launched ARD, I made sure to run Software Update and reboot, in order to make sure the Admin and Client apps were the same version, 3.1
This does not work on either station. AT BEST, it works for 24 hours or so (possibly until logout/login) and then I get the same error message.
Any thoughts?I've got this same problem running 2.2 I've installed it on my computer at home as a test and it worked just fine. The only difference between that one and my work computer is that i have more software installed at work. Doesn't anyone have some sort of fix for this stupid error?

I need to repair my HD with Disk Utility. Of course I must start up with install CD but my iMac fails to start up from either the Leopard CD or the original OSX CD. What can I do? Thanks for info. Mario
Baltwo:
Thanks for reply, but I need some explanation. PRAM I'm familiar with and I know what to do. NVRAM and SMC, however, new to me. I'd be grateful if you would explain where to find them and how to proceed. Many thanks, Mario. -
My imac G5 isight September 2006 hard drive takes several attempts to mount. When it does it works fine. Is there anything I can do to repair or do I just abandon it and sell it for parts?
It's an Intel iMac the last G5s were built in 2005.
How to identify iMac models
1. Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Startup Disk and check to besure the that OS X 10.6 on the Macintosh HD is set as the Startup Disk.
2. Start up from you Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD, navagate to Utilities > Disk Utility and Repair the Macintosh HD.

Kernel failed to start ethernet device at startup
Hi everyone,
i'm having a problem with the ethernet device of my new imac (i7).
Every 2nd or 3rd systemstart the kernel is not able to load / start the ethernet device and only after one or even two reboot the device is started and the imac is able to connect to the router.
When the kernel failed to start the device i'm getting the following information from dmesg / kernel.log:
+AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement: Turbo Ratios 1145+
+AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement: initialization complete+

+AppleBCM5701Ethernet: 0 0 start - getAdapterInfo failed, giving up+

The device is allways working fine when i boot into Windows7 (64bit)!
The OSX System-Profiler tells me, that the following Ethernet-Controller is installed ...

What is going wrong with the OSX?

That implies that your new machine has a newer build than the combo update. In that case, boot with the restore disc that came with it and restore that.
The baseline 10.6.2 build is 10C540 and according to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159 yours is probably 10C2234. -
IPhone could not be synced because the sync session failed to start

I appreciate any... and all help I can get on this.

IMAC G5(ISight) Photo Booth wont open!
Isight is currently being used by another application"...Oh no it isn't!!! There is nothing else running?
I seem to get this error when opening photobooth and thus can't use it. This happened after fixing permissions and installing adium. I'm sure i'm not the only person to get this problem. Help!!! i love my shiny new g5....P.S For everyone complaning about the noise on these machines, mine is quiet as a mouse. If you have ALL the suggestions already offered without result, I have three other ideas.
First idea, consider the suggestion from the Troubleshooting section of your iMac's User's Guide (Pages 55-58) such as using the Apple Hardware Test CD, reinstalling software, restoring your iMac's OS, etc. (0) If you decide to reinstall or restore software applications, I suggest you do maintenance before and after the restore as explained in How I Update My Mac OS X.
(1) If you decide to reinstall your entire OS, consider the suggestions in Reinstalling Mac OS X (Rarely Necessary).
(2) If you have not already done so, you might even consider an erase and clean install for a known good starting point as explained in Macintosh System Stability.
Second idea, since your problem may be peculiar to an iMac G5 (iSight) iSight or to the Photo Booth app that is bundled with it, try the iMac Discussions area or the "Chat with a support agent" option avialable there.
Third idea, talk with your retailer or return your iMac and him ask to make your new Mac work for you or exchange it for one that does.
