IMac G5 iSight freezes on startup - CDs won't work

Hi everyone.
My iMac G5 iSight is freezing up on startup. It was running slowly and erratically, so I restarted it - ever since it has failed to start up.
It gets though the basic hardware check and gets to a point where there is the big apple logo and the circular pulsing thing that suggests it is loading - however it never gets any further.
I tried loading with a CD holding the c key -but that won't work. The CD drive revs up, but it gets stuck at the same location.
I've zapped the PRAM several times (twice each). No effect.
I've disconnected the keyboard and all peripherals.
I've removed the memory module I added 2 years ago.
So, I'm stuck. It doesn't look like complete hardware failure - or it wouldn't get as far is it does.
Is there any other way to force a reset of some kind that will allow me to boot from a CD?
Thanks in Advance.

I have updated my Imac to Mavericks and now my parallells won't work and I have reinstalled as per the instructions. Please help as all my data is on a hardrive that is formatted for PC.

Yes I just discovered that this morning but I have purchased another external harddrive and formatted it for both and am in the process of transferring the files across it and then I will erase the old harddrive and reformat it so I can use it.
I have learnt to format harddrives from this experience but am happy to see the back of parallells.
Thank you for your help though it is much appreciated.

Hi, my illustrator CS5 freezes at startup. It was working properly till last friday, now i cannot open it. ¿can somebody help me?

    Leo,
You may try the list (5) being less likely).
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/preference-file-location-illustrator.html
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • ICal Crashing after startup; iTunes won't work

    My problem is twofold:
My iCal calender (desktop) crashes upon opening every time. I reinstalled Tiger (from "not for resale discs" supplied by Apple). It did not fix the crashing; I still can't use iCal. Now, iTunes won't work with this installation of Mac OSX.
I deleted iCal and reinstalled the OS again and I have the same results. Coincidentally, this crash happened after I upgraded to the iPhone 3Gs.
    Can anyone help me?

  • Imac g5 (isight) freezing

after a couple of freezing last week, yesterday it freezed again and i had to shut it down holding the start/stop button. then i tried to start it again and i got this window (english, german, french and japanese) telling me i had to restart it. after i restarted again it works until i get on the login frame (with my two users) and then it freeze again without anything happend anymore. mouse cursors is there but it doesn't move, and I can't even choose the user. completely freezed.
last week i tried to run disk utility but not from the original tiger's cd. all was ok. yesterday i did a hardware test and all was ok. i tried several times but nothing changed, i only get to the users window and then it crash. it's really strange cause i had 1512 mb of ram and my 160gb hd is only half full. what should i do? running disk utiliy from the original cd would help?
    thank you

i was going to run the disk utility from the original tiger's cd and i discovered that now my imac doesn't even to start up anymore. i push the start button and the light sensor switch on (low shine) but the screen keep black, and after 30 secs the fans start to run intensively but nothing more.
had a call with the technician at my apple center explaining the problem. he told me it could be software or (more this) hardware issue considering the current black screen status. how can it be possible? the machine is only 14 months old. this is really disapointing.
looking at other topics it SEEMS that other ppl are having almost the same issue and, as the guy is asking here, http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4516632#4516632 can this issue be related to the last security/software updates of a couple of weeks ago?

  • My Mac won't boot past white screen and startup keys won't work

Hello. I have an iMac not sure what year.
So about a year ago it froze and wouldn't restart, so I neglected it for a year. Now that this my only fixable Mac I have been researching to fix it. I was able to boot into safe mode about a week ago for a little bit but then it froze again. Ever since then none of the startup keys work, even resetting the PRAM, I heard the second ding and then it just brings up the cursor on the white screen with no disk options.
I have an external disk drive connected to the USB I'd like to boot my Mountain Lion from but since the start up keys don't work I don't know how to do that.
Any help would be incredible, I do not care about saving anything from the computer I just want it to work. I hate dealing with the "geniuses" so that's not an option.
    Thanks

When you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key and you should be able to boot into the Recovery Partition if you have Lion, Mt. Lion or Mavericks on the internal HD. If even the Option key does not work then your keyboard may have dead batteries or be defective and in need of replacement.
If you have ML on the EHD as a bootable clone then you should be able to boot from it.
My best guess is you have a failed HD though, my advice is to take it in for professional diagnosis to your local Apple Store or AASP and get a quote on what is wrong then decide  how you want to proceed.

  • Startup keys won't work

I'm having issues logging into my intel-based iMac, so I've been trying to boot up in safe mode, as well as boot from my Snow Leopard install dvd. But, whenever I try to boot up using the startup keys (shift for safe bode, option or C key for booting from the install dvd), nothing different happens. It still boots up normally to the login screen. The keyboard works fine, because I can still type in my password.

Use a wired keyboard for the at boot key commands, a PC one works too. Alt/option is the same as Windows/Apple/command key are the same too.

  • External HD as Startup Disk won't work after Restoring with Time Machine

Hey all, this seems very simple; very, very simple at that... But I might be overlooking something here:
I recently had a MacBook running the latest OS X Leopard, until my cat decided I didn't need it anymore and added a glass of water to the mix! So after weeks of freaking out and praying... I found myself with a loaner computer, this iMac G5 1.8 GHz, successfully running leopard for the most part.
Here's the good news: I had Time Machine backing up all my files from the MacBook that can't swim. It was backed up on a partitioned 1tb Western Digital hard drive, like 700gb for TM and 300gb for an external HD.
What I am trying to accomplish is to use the TM backups from the 700gb side to "restore" the system onto the other 300gb external HD side, and use this is the main disk on my iMac G5.
So far, after a 7 and a half restoring session with my Leopard install disc, I think the 300gb external HD is prepped and ready to go, but I can't select that HD as a startup disk, and when I first restarted after the restoring session with my Leopard disc, the startup disk I wanted was "not found" and it quickly went back to the 80gb iMac internal drive. HELP!
Maybe this isn't possible because I'm backing up and installing onto the same HD?

So far, this is where I am at... and I think I'm on the right track!
I don't care what is on this loaner computer (it's one of those... you know, "long-term" loans from my parents...) So I reinstalled Leopard, fresh install. I had an option of restoring from Time Machine, and then I realized I'd be restoring to the wrong disk, so why not install Leopard onto my external partitioned HD that I have been wanting this whole time?
Looking closer, apparently I need to completely repartition my WD external hard drive with an Apple Partition Map because I'm using it with my Power PC-based iMac G5 (beggars can't be choosers!) If I had an Intel-based Mac, I'd be OK with my partitioned HD that I set up with a GUID Partition Table with my drowned MacBook, right?
So, like I said, I am on the right track... all I'm waiting for is to borrow an addition external HD to shuffle some files around before I can do this right... hopefully. Another question: am I able to duplicate my Time Machine Backup HD to another external HD? Or will I have to get really creative or "ghetto" in my attempts to bring one restore of my past computer?
Thanks for all your help and support! And to answer the other question so far, all my HDs are connected via firewire. Thanks!!

  • New iMac, migrated from macbook and now mail won't work. Tried re-installing operating system, still doesn't work. Can anyone help me to get mail working? thanks

I just bought a new iMac and I thought that it would be simple to migrate from my MacBook.
I have a time machine back-up so I decided to migrate using that. Everything seemed to instal pretty well with the exception of mail.  To begin with I had 2 mail icons, then I started to read some forums and checked that i had the one I wanted in the applications folder, deleted the other and then downloaded the new operating system.  Mail had to be force quit first and even when the download was complete Mail still wouldn't open or run. The only thing I can do is compose a new message, but I can't see my inbox at all.
It's really frustrating and I would love to know in a simple step by step guide how to get mail up and running with my existing migrated emails in it.
If anyone can give me some advice that would be great.
    thanks in advance.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • MP3 CDs won't work in car stereo

Hello. I've tried multiple burning tests with iTunes, Toast, and the Finder. I'm trying to get an MP3 CD to work in my 2007 Mazda 6 (five CD changer). The manual says it will read MP3 CDs, and I am burning MP3s... not AACs. When the CD is loaded into my car, I only get track 1 without any audio. Time does elapse as if it is playing something, but I don't hear anything. If I try to skip to the next track, it stays on track 1. I can even search through track 1... but still no audio.
Has anyone had any luck making an MP3 CD with Mac software? Would you mind listing the steps you took in order to create one? Thank you!

    Here's my hardware and software:
    iTunes 7.0.1 (up to date)
    Toast 6.1.1 (up to date)
    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5
    Memorex CD-R 52x blank media
    HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B
Here's what I did before my first post:
1 - Burned two songs with iTunes using the MP3 CD option. Maxium Possible speed. Closed and verified the disc.
2 - Burned two songs with the Finder as a data disc. No folders. Maxium Speed Possible.
3 - Burned two songs with Toast as a data disc. Mac & PC option. No folders. Maxium Speed Possible.
4 - Burned two songs with Toast as a data disc. Mac & PC option. No folders. 8x speed.
5 - Burned two songs with Toast as a data disc. Mac & PC option. No folders. 4x speed.
6 - Burned two songs with Toast as a MP3 disc. No folders. Maxium Possible.
7 - Burned two songs with Toast as a MP3 disc. No folders. 8x speed.
8 - Burned two songs with Toast as a MP3 disc. No folders. 4x speed.
I'm out of options on how to test this thing. Before I figure out if MP3 CD players only work with certain burners, cds, etc. I do not have another MP3 CD player to test it on in my house. My car is the only player that reads MP3 CDs. Any more ideas? I really appreciate your help!

  • Startup tasks won't work in startup class

    Hi,
I need to do some work at system startup and shutdown that
doesn't quite fit the WLS startup/shutdown model. In both cases,
I need to talk to the WLS web server but it's not listening until
after the startup classes are run and stops listening before the
    shutdown classes are run.
I'm thinking about using a servlet init() for my one-shot startup
but don't know how robust a solution that is. And I don't know
what to do about shutdown. Is there a startup/shutdown hook
associated with container loading/unloading? Some other solution?
    I'm using WLS 6.1 SP2.
    Thanks, Garry

Using one of those is definitely better than startup classes.

  • Importing CDs won't work

I imported a bunch of songs a couple of days ago and now when I put in a CD to import additional songs the window doesn't pop up with the list of songs to import. I cannot figure out what's going on and it's driving me crazy!!!

OK I've tried just about everything. I've downloaded and installed a crap load of software from SONY, tried finding Audio software from the manufacturers, however it gave it to me in a zipped file, which opened was nothing but a mess, so I couldn't figure out how to update that. Other than that, What is an ATA or IDE Bus driver? And how can you tell if they’re on the same IDE? Is it the Bus Address above? (0,0)
I’ve updated the CD/DVD Mashita Drive firmware, Phoenix BIO, the DVgate, the nVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 Graphics controller Driver, and the VAIO Media Software as well. Windows is set to update automatically daily (or whenever new updates are available). and I've even messed around with the registry system, which I'm freaked out about because I dont want my DADS computer screwed up permanently so I made back up copies and emailed myself directions.....I'm going mad, can u tell? SOOOOOOOO, I've tried it over and over and over, and have constantly referred back to the articles and forums, and still can not figure out what the heck I'm doing wrong!!! Here is a copy of my diagnostics, and some drivers do not yet have updates to them, and others dont have the name of manufacturer but just says (standard system devices). So here r my iTunes 7 (PITA!!!!) Diagnostics: please review and tell me what i'm doing wrong please!! Just the first audio CD is being read, anything after that, WILL NOT BE ACKNOWLEDGED in iTunes under devices!!! I dont under stand it...
