IMac G5 iSight Model. NEW HDD.

Hi. I just replaced the old HDD with my New 500 GB Seagate Barracuda HDD.
So, I'm trying to install new OS X Tiger too.
When I put the disc in and turn it on with holding down the C key... It goes to the grey screen with apple sign on it and then stay there forever! (I think for 30 minutes.... then I just turn it off...)
Then, I tried the Option (Alt) key... It shows only the CD drive but not the Hard drive (I'm assuming it's because of the NEW HDD.)
So, I click the CD drive and then It goes to the grey screen with apple sign on it and the spinning wheel thing is below the apple sign.... But, in few minutes the apple logo turns to the "No Entry" sign and then stays there forever!!!
I don't know why this is happening... and I don't have the old HDD anymore....
Please help me!

In which case it's possible the drive itself is faulty, see if you can return it for a new one.
Can you see it if you use Target Disk Mode?

  • IMac G5 (iSight model) won't start up - video included

    http://s1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc449/langdonX1/?action=view&current=imac071 .mp4
An imac 1.9Ghz G5 won't boot up at all. When you press the power button you  hear a sight whirr and then a faint high pitched hum. Sometimes the power light turns on for a second in unison with the attempt. I tried to reset the SMU but that did nothing.
I took the cover off and saw nothing obvious wrong.
At the 3 and 8 second mark in the video you can hear the sounds it makes but you may have to turn up the volume.
Is this symptomatic of a dead power supply or some other problem? Any solutions to get it working again?

    from your linked article:
This article does not apply to iMac G5 (iSight) computers.
iMacs with an iSight have no back to them. You remove the face of the computer to access the logic board and the screen has to be removed to get to that. So all that stuff in the apple knowledgebase article can't be done to this model.

  • Extremely slow 20" iMac G5 (iSight model) Help needed!!

    Hi Everyone
Okay, I've spent the best part of the last two days troubleshoooting this machine for a friend of mine.
    SYMPTOM
Her iMac is running slowly fullstop. It boots slowly and trying to perform any functions only results in the "beachball" pointer for a long time before the computer responds. Example: Clicking on the Apple Menu can take over a minute to display the options. Select an option and you wait over another minute before the computer displays the result. This is the same for anything you do - within the Finder or any other app!
    WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR
Okay, here is a list of everything that I've done so far:
Disk Utility: Repaired disk permissions 3 times whilst booted in safe mode. No improvement!
Disk Utility: Repaired disk permissions 2 times whilst booted in normal mode. No improvement!
Disk Utility: Repaired disk 2 times whilst booted in normal mode. No improvement!
Zapped PRAM 3 times. No improvement!
Decided to take the plunge and eliminate the HD and OS as possible culprits:
Started computer in Target Disk Mode and connected it to a PowerBook G4 (i.e. another PPC Mac)
    performed a backup
Disk Utility: reformatted hard drive 3 times
TechTool Pro: Read/Write Test on hard drive - passed!
TechTool Pro: Surface Scan on entire hard drive - passed! (yes, all 488,397,168 blocks after 17hrs 25mins)
reinstalled Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.6) from an original Apple retail DVD
Booted iMac - now starts up in about 3mins 30 secs (as opposed to a lot longer earlier)Tried using the Finder to perform basic Mac OS X functions (e.g. open system preferences, access About This Mac, etc). STILL TAKES A LONG TIME - Very little improvement!!!
Removed the 2GB DDR2 SDRAM from iMac's RAM slot
Booted iMac - still starts up in about 3mins 30 secs
Tried using the Finder to perform basic Mac OS X functions (e.g. open system preferences, access About This Mac, etc). STILL TAKES A LONG TIME - no improvement over having the extra RAM installed!!!
Re-inserted the extra 2GB RAM DIMM back into iMac
Ran TechTool Pro to test hardware (everything passes, including memory).
Okay, so now I'm at a loss. Any suggestions would be most welcome and appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Joe.

Actually, I haven't tried Rember, thinking that since the computer displayed the same behavior without the extra SDRAM installed as it does with it installed, that it couldn't be the RAM. And the factory RAM is soldered on, so I can't do anything about that. Still, RAM is what I was suspecting originally (after the HD), so I'll go ahead now and run Rember on it.
Since you're online, I'd appreciate your opinion on something else I've identified. Since reinstalling the system, the computer boots a lot quicker than it was, but as I said it is still extremely slow performing functions once booted. HOWEVER, I've noticed that now once a particular function is performed once, it can be performed again and again quickly.
    EXAMPLE
Clicking on the Finder icon in the Dock the first time takes the computer 26 seconds to open a finder window. Do it again and it appears instantly. Likewise, selecting clicking on the Trash icon in the Dock took 31 seconds the first time to open it up. After that it opens up instantly. It's the same with using the Apple Menu, etc.
If I reboot the computer, the same thing happens all over again. Any ideas what this may mean?
Thanks very much for your help!
    Joe.

  • My iMac G5 iSight has died.  New iMac on order.

My 5+ year old 20" iMac G5 iSight has died after a recent 3 hour power outage.  I have nothing.  It has acted a little stubborn with some restarts recently and I waited a little too long to replace.  I tore it down and replaced the PRAM battery but no luck, I am thinking it is a power supply issue.  I have a new iMac on order which should arrive next week.  I also should have a good Time Capsule backup.
I would like to remove the hard drive and put it an external firewire enclosure, reboot from that and restore my data and applications.  Will be going from a PPC iMac to an Intel.  Is this a valid option?  My main concern is my Quicken data and program.  I have been running Quicken 2006 and don't really want to upgrade from the reviews I have read.  Don't have the install disk for Quicken 2006 anymore.
    Thanks in advance!
    Jim

Removing the drive is an excellent idea, you should be able to mount your firewire external and use it on your new machine.
I'm not sure if you will be able to reboot from the FireWire external, it depends on the damage done by the hard shutdown (get yourself a USP, I use APC models, they're very good and have saved me many a time, I live in the country and the power is always going off), but it's likely that you can.
    Please post back with results,

  • VGA output on new iMac G5 (iSight)

According to the tech specs, the new iMac G5 (iSight) can mirror its internal display onto an external VGA display (using the optional adapter).
Can someone who has both the new iMac and the adapter please test whether it actually outputs two different resolutions (for example, 1680x1050 on the internal display and 1024x768 on the external monitor)? Or is it like the older iMac models, which can only drive both displays at the same resolution, effectively rendering the internal display useless while an external one is connected?
    Thanks.

It mirrors exactly the same resolution being displayed on the internal display.

  • Installing OS on a new HDD for imac with no installed HDD

    Hi all
I am looking to buy an iMac 27", but it doesnt come with a HDD
So I wanted to know if I buy a new HDD for it, can I install Mavericks onto it and fit it to the iMac? How would I go about doing this?
I dont have access to another mac but I do have access to a windows machine. Can I do it from there?
    Any help appreciated
    Thanks

Where are you buying an iMac 27-inch, Late 2009 model that has no internal hard disk drive?
Having to assume it was removed by an original owner, does the computer work? Was it tested by use of an externally enclosed HDD with a correct bootable system installed?
There are various repair and upgrade guides online, several topics among them and several are free to view or use. There likely is an iFixit guide that may cover that vintage of iMac 27-inch build year model.
Not sure which iMac 27-inch model guide applies to your computer,
    some appear here http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMac_Intel
While considering the hard disk drive, be sure that if there are any sensors or special cables required to be in place and attached to a new replacement, they are in place and working; some users of later models found when a hard disk drive was replaced, their fans ran at high and uncontrolled speeds due to lack of sensor input. The default situation was for the computer act as though the unit was overheated. And third party fan control software to set a fan at low slower speeds does not take into account faster speeds are needed to cool iMacs. Yours may not exhibit this issue, but I am not certain either way.
When you get it set up, with HDD and original Snow Leopard installed & updated to 10.6.8, be sure to check to see if there are any hardware or firmware updates. I see there was one listed for your model and it may already be installed...

My iMac (late 2010 model) desktop's hard drive is fried (was about 200GB). How much am I expecting to pay for a new one and retrieve my information?

As you can see Erin, trying to recover information from a hosed drive can be very expensive.
I would suggest first the OWC site as well. You can get a new drive of choice in size there.
I would also get the voyager  http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/VOYQHDB1.0T/
    and..
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Prosoft%20Engineering/DGDR3BUN/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/TOOLKIT11/
Wth your lap top and these folllowing tools your are set to change out the drive, reload OS and then with
the voyager pop in the old iMac drive and with the Prosoft software, try to mount and recover the files. Data Rescue is very good at this " if " the drive is not totally mechanically hosed. Drive Genius is very good at a number of things too. Nothing replaces the old adage of Back Up Back up Back up.
The voyage I listed can become the new backup drive for you.. your choice of tools: Time Machine or by cloning via CarbonCopyCloner or by what I use SuperDuper! IF you want to be really kewl.. both. By that I mean cloning and Time Machine.
It will take you an hour to swap out the drive and spring clean the iMac.. there is a hundred how too,s on you tube.
Hope this helps. Remember if is always when a drive will fail..they all do. I tell the people I support that Harddrives are good for 15 min.. to when they don't work. They will all fail.
Apple Geniuses are very limited to what they can and will do as far as file recovery.
Your best bet is to try to do it your self first. There is lots of help out here and you are not the first.

  • Installing new HDD into an iMac G5 with SATA

Installing new HDD into an iMac G5 with SATA and would like to know how to migrate the old system over to the new drive. Can I use a USB2 external drive, move all the old data, then select the new system as the boot system?

    lwolfcc-
    Yes.
But you might do better with a program like SuperDuper, as it will be sure to copy any hidden files as well.

  • New HDD in Imac

i have in my imac new hdd. Servis changed for me without installing osx. Now when put in osx dvd and hold down c key, nothing happen and dvd comes out. Any solution for it? Thank zou guys...
    Mac os version 10.6.2.

Try resetting the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't work, take the computer back to the Apple Store or reseller you took it to be repaired. Note that, if the problem was caused because of a defective repair, you should get your SuperDrive replaced for free

  • FCP will not open on my new iMac G5 (iSight)

I have i have FCP 4.5 and just recently accquired a new 20" iMac G5 (iSight). I installed FCP on my new mac and it doesn't want to start up. I get a message that says "Configuration error: This software requires hardware or software which is missing. AGP graphics card."
Has anyone else heard of this problem and if so how can you fix it?
I greatly appreciate in advance to any and all help.

Well I found the Final Cut Pro 4 'info.plist' (Made a copy of it first) and opened it and found 'AGP' and replaced it with and typed in 'PCI'.
(The 'info.plist' file opened up in some software called 'Omni Outliner', any idea what this is?)
Clicked on Final Cut Pro 4 and now it works!
No idea how it has worked but Im impressed and very pleased that it has! Thank again for that link.

  • How can I install a fresh OS on my 13" macbook. It has a New HDD and I have no install discs. It is a Mid 2010 Model

Can anyone tell me How I can install a new operating system on a new HDD of my Macbook Mid 2010 model. I don't have another Mac to use, I only have a PC, I also don't have access to any discs or bootable USB's.

Thanks for the quick response guys. The fulll story is, I bought the machine as not working from eBay with no HDD. It was listed as water damaged. Im competent at fixing water damage and got the machine up and running again in no time. I put a HDD in that I had lying around that was working last time I checked with hope of being able to format it using a recovery USB download from Apple and then going from there but I can't even get that far. Looking at the model release time it seems it would have been released with Snow Leopard so it makes sense that i'd need to get a disk. Unless you have any other suggestions?

  • New iMac with iSight won't take image

Hello all, hope you can help.
At my place of work we use a standard image on all of our client Macs. I have used this same image to setup G3 iMacs, G3 Powermacs, G4 Powermacs, G4 Powerbooks and G5 iMacs. When one of our iMac G5s broke down we got a replacement which was the new 1.9ghz iMac with iSight. However when i image this machine, all i get is the apple for a few seconds and then the circle with the line through it.
When this problem happens, usually repairing permissions, resetting PRAM or those usual things tend to help, but not this time.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Since this is a new machine, just to rule out a problem with the computer itself, I'd try installing from the discs to see if you have trouble doing it that way.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The hard drive is not formatted, and it must be formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in order to install OS X.
Close the OS X installer, and go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility. Then, format your hard drive in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as Format > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, close Disk Utility and install OS X

    Hi,
    first of:
you are in the wrong Forum.
This is the Mac Mini Forum, whereas the iMac G5 Forum is here http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=134
Nonetheles, when you have booted the iMac from the OSX Leopard DVD and have choosen your language, you find the Disk Utility app in the Top Menu - Utilities.
Run Disk Utility from there, click on your new harddisk in the left pane and in the right pane click on the 'Partition' Tab.
Partition to your liking and make sure that to use the 'Option' button to set the partition map to be 'Apple Partition Map' (otherwise you can't boot from it).
    Hope it helps
    Stefan
