Imac G5 isight sound problems. It's muted!!!

Hello to everyone.
Since I installed Leopard I've been having an extremely annoying sound problem. It has happened 4 times so far. When I switched on my mac and tried to listen to some music, the sound was not working at all! I went to system preferences/hardware/sound and all the topics were grey! It was like I didn't have any sound! After repairing the permissions, verified disk and repaired disk with the Leopard DVD everything worked ok, but after a few days the same think happened again and again and again... Please help me because it's VEEEERYYYY annoying to waste my time with these thinks that were suppose to work in the first place.
Thank you in advance.

  • Sound problems: volume always muted.

    iMac 20" dual core
    Tiger 10.4.8
The com.apple.soundpref.plist file has disappeared from the Macintosh HD Library. The volume now is muted. When it's at 50% I can barely hear anything from the speakers. I've been told I need to do an Archive and Reinstall, but I want another solution! I have the soundpref file in my User Library, but copying it to the HD Library doesn't do anything. Restarting doesn't do anything. I created a new account and it was also missing the file. I've read that maybe the computer thinks my headphones (which I've used recently [though I used them before with no problems]) are still plugged in, but in System Prefs, the Sound Output Devise is the internal speakers . . .
    Hayulp!
    Thanks.
iMac Mac OS X (10.4.8) 2GB RAM; I use FCX, Live Type, Adobe CS2, MS Office, Endnote
iMac 20" Intel Mac OS X (10.4.8) 2GB RAM; I use FCX, Live Type, Adobe CS2, MS Office, Endnote

Thanks Reggie. Nothing happened when I tried that this morning and so I went to the Apple Store and they couldn't find anything wrong with the software and it was so loud in there they couldn't be sure there was a hardware problem either.
They did confirm two important things:
    - There will not be a com.apple.soundpref.pslist file in the HD Library; this file is only in the User library.
    - There are no "headphone" settings when headphones are plugged into the jack: it's analog and can't even "look" for any information that would tell it to dampen the sound.
The remaining question: why doesn't the soundpref file renew after being deleted? Why does it have the same creation date as the day I installed the OS (when I bought the computer)?
Thanks for your time. Happy New Gregorian Year.

  • IMac G5 iSight - Resolution problems when using s-video output.

    Good afternoon all.
I have an iMac G5 and the only video output it has is a mini VGA socket. I have used this with a mini VGA to S-Video converter cable from Apple and am getting some odd results.
The Mac is running Leopard 1.5.7 and I'm outputting to a fairly old Panasonic CRT TV.
The problem I find is that when I plug in my mini VGA adaptor to the Mac it reduces the resolution on the Mac screen down to 1024x768 (stretched). The TV outputted TV image looks great, but I can't seem to keep my native resolution of 1440x900 on the Mac display.
If I do go and change the resolution in "displays" in the sys' prefs' then it just seems to keep the 1024x768 resolution on the Mac but this time without stretching it.
Does anyone know how I can keep my Mac at its native resolution of 1440x900 while still outputting to s-video to the TV?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you again in advance.
    Stuart

    Hi
I have the same config as you: I have been using it for years to view on my tv dvds or videos from the web.
To my knowledge there is no way to acheive what you wish: when you plug the adaptor in the mac adjust to your output source and its main display (the g5 display) will reflect that with the result that it becomes very difficult to use.
Maybe there is a way to try changing the resolution in a middlle"configuration" which would give an acceptable viewing on the tv as well as on the g5.
Personally I keep plugging and unplugging the adaptor as needed.

  • ISight - sound problem

I started using iSight today. After some adjustments (AIM), I successfully (A&V) communicated with a PC user. Later in the day, we linked up again and this time the V (video) was fine, however the A (audio) became a problem i.e., he could hear me - I could not hear him. Anyone have any ideas about who has what problem? Thanks.

You're welcome. Glad things are now working for you. And thank you for your feedback. It is helpful to all of us who read your post.
If you continue to have less than satisfactory video chats, you can try testing to see where the problem lies.   Both parties to any problem chat should test with more than one other user to determine which end of the connection is causing your symptoms. If you do not have enough available buddies for testing, you can find more Buddy Names for iChat Test here.
It is not unusual for the video you get from you AIM for Windows PC buddy to be of lower quality than from most of your Mac iChat AV Buddies. That may be due, at least in part, to limitations of the AIM for Windows output or your buddy's PC system or internet connection.
You can try to improve overall video chat performance on your Mac by updating to 10.4.4 and considering any other suggestions relevant to your system from Help for iChat AV 3 Problems.
If you want even more quality video after applying the suggestions from the "Help for iChat AV 3 Problems" link above, Check your Broadband Speed. Increasing your broadband speed will probably be the easiest way YOU can improve your video quality, although it does so at increased cost.
Other improvements to your PC buddy's video will need to come from your AIM for Windows PC buddy's end of the connection.
I have AOL Instant Messenger 4.7 ... I assume that I do not have to have Instant Messenger running to communicate with iSight. You do not really need AIM 4.7 at all. I suggest you uninstall AIM 4.7 according to the AIM instructions.
As explained in the AIM section of Common PC Chat Applications and iChat, AIM 4.7 is a TEXT ONLY app. You can use iChat AV to do text with AIM users, so AIM is not really required.
If you decide to keep AIM 4.7 on your Mac, do not launch it or have it running when you launch iChat AV or while you run iChat AV. As explained in the "Help for iChat AV 3 Problems" link above, you should launch iChat AV by itself, and while you are using iChat AV, you should only add other apps if they are really necessary.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • Is there a fix yet for the no sound problem with lion on the iMac without having to restart every time I switch the computer on?

Is there a fix yet for the no sound problem with lion on the iMac without having to restart every time I switch the computer on?

Try booting in Safe Mode by holding the the shift key immediately after powering on your system. Safe boot mode will for a directory check of your startup volume, then load only the required kernal extensions (kext files), and deletes some cache files. Once the system boots into Safe Mode you can simply restart the system to see whether the issue has been resolved.
If you still have the issue try resetting the SMC by shutting down the system and disconnecting the power cord for ~15 seconds, then reconnecting the power cord. Next, reset the parameter RAM (PRAM) by holding down the option-option-P-R keys after powering ON the system. Wait until the iMac restarts twice, then let the system boot normally.

  • Is it common for imac 20" isight to have noise problems?

    Hi there,
I ordered imac 20" isight and currently waiting for delivery. I am getting woried over these "buzzing noise" and other noise problems reported over and over again here on these boards. Can more experienced users of these boards, apple insiders and anyone else give me your opinion:
Is it common for imac 20" isight to have noise problems?
I am really considering to get 17" if there is any real information it is considerably more quiet.
    Thank you in advance.

    We have a new 17" and 20"
The 17" is virtually silent, the 20" there is some fan noise.
I find it annoying, although it is 100% quieter than my old PowerMac, which I got used to!

  • IMac G5 (iSight) First Impressions

Well, I got my iMac G5 (iSight) from Apple yesterday. It really looks unbelievable. I'm surprised at how they can get all that power into such an elegant look and design.
Ok, here is what I think so far.
When I got it out of the box, hooked it up in no time. I have one thing to note about the audio in/out ports. It seems that the connector will "click in" all the way into the port, and make a good connection, but the shaft of the input cable is a bit visible, which could make one think it's not in all the way, and maybe damage the port by trying to push it in more. Once, in, if you move the cable, you will hear some static, but I don't know if that has anything to do with the shaft no going all the way flush to the back of the unit. Anyway, the cables won't be moving, so static won't be a problem with normal use.
The display brightness. The guys at Apple have a few settings. Bright, Brighter, Brighter Still, and Insane! This display is sooooo bright. Even with the brightness turned down all the way (BTW Apple, when brightness is turned down/off, it should actually get "less bright"), it's still too bright. So you'll want to calibrate on a lower brightness. I had a 20" Cinema, so I know they are bright, but this seems REALLY bright.
Unlock keychain error. After setting up the Mac and going through the setup program, after launching OS X, I got this box that said to input a password to unlock keychain for airport for system. I tried my password, but that wouldn't work. I just cancelled. All appeard fine, but it showed up again. I did get this fixed, the solution will be later.
Unable to verify disk using 10.4.3. As you know in 10.4.3, you can now do a verify disk while the boot volume is mounted. However, I kept on getting an error message that said could not unmount volume, and it wouldn't let me. I also solved this, solution in a minute.
The only thing I can think of for these problems, is that there was a problem with the factory install. So I did a clean install using the factory discs, then set all my preferences. I had no problems after that. I ended up wasting like 6 hours in the process, as I moved all of my music (16,000+) songs over before I knew of the problems, as well as installing all of my software and changes preferences within each piece of software. I was a bit mad to say the least.
In terms of the hardware working, it's really quiet and I've experienced no problems yet. It's definitley a step up from my mini (which I have on eBay right now, along with my 20" ACD which just sold for $660.00, the mini is up to $781.00). Along with some other stuff I'm selling, I won't pay anything out of pocket for the iMac, so that was a pretty good upgrade.
Front Row, in theory is a great idea, but since I have 16,000+ songs, with hundreds of artists, it really isn't too practical right now. Maybe if they add an index, where you can jump to artist/song by letter, that might help. Or have some menu options you can scroll through on the bottom of each screen. Right now, it just takes too long to get to where I want to go, so iTunes is much faster. The album art and interface is nicely done, but again, it's just too time consuming to get what I want.
I would buy this iMac again, and getting $100.00 off buying last Friday was a great deal. Aside from the software problems initially, I've had nothing but quiet, problem-free use. After having the mini, which was almost completely silent, this computer is still almost silent. Of course in the natrual seated position, if all is quiet, you can hear a fan, but it's not a whirring loud sound, just a faint fan sound. I have read some complaints about noise issues, but I don't hear anything like that. It's really, really quite. My PC, now that was noisy. I'll post if I hear different.

Hello hPad and welcome to the wonderful world of Apple!
Just a few things to bear in mind when you search on eBay:
    1. £500 sounds too much to me. They only cost £1000 new (they were last made in 2006) and as the G5 is officially obsolete it is probably only worth around £300 or so.
    2. Make absolutely certain that any secondhand Mac you may buy comes with the original install disks. There are maintenance tasks that are impossible without them. If the vendor cannot offer these, don't buy from him.
    3. OS Leopard 10.5.x is as high as a G5 can go. From new, it had Tiger 10.4.x installed, so you may also have to buy Leopard. If so, make sure you are getting a black retail disk, not somebody's cast-off updater.
    4. The G5 iMac has only one slot for adding memory (RAM), so the maximum you can install is 2GB, making 2.5GB in all. As you can see below, my G5 iMac has a total of 1.5GB of RAM, which has proved sufficient. If you want to buy additional RAM stick to either Crucial or Kingston. Both offer a lifetime warranty.
Feel free to post back with any additional questions. Happy hunting!

  • IMac G5 (iSight model) won't start up - video included

    http://s1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc449/langdonX1/?action=view&current=imac071 .mp4
An imac 1.9Ghz G5 won't boot up at all. When you press the power button you  hear a sight whirr and then a faint high pitched hum. Sometimes the power light turns on for a second in unison with the attempt. I tried to reset the SMU but that did nothing.
I took the cover off and saw nothing obvious wrong.
At the 3 and 8 second mark in the video you can hear the sounds it makes but you may have to turn up the volume.
Is this symptomatic of a dead power supply or some other problem? Any solutions to get it working again?

    from your linked article:
This article does not apply to iMac G5 (iSight) computers.
iMacs with an iSight have no back to them. You remove the face of the computer to access the logic board and the screen has to be removed to get to that. So all that stuff in the apple knowledgebase article can't be done to this model.

  • I have sound problem in My Cq40-144TU Laptop

    Hi,
I have Cq40-144tu laptop. i am't hearing sound from internal speaker but sound is hearing from headphone. I have configured my system many time. Last got to shop and they also format it and reconfigured but still this problem is showing.
But I was hearing sound from speaker when i chat in gtalk and then i heared sound from window media player and other application also for 5 to 10 second only. every time some text is recieved i hear sound for 5 to 10 second.
please tell me what is problem in My Laptop. i have window 7 ultimate operating system.
    Please help me sir

What sound problem - no sound on anything, no sound on some apps ?
Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
And for future info typing in all capitals is considered to be SHOUTING

  • Intel iMac 20' users - any problems with noise on your firewire interfaces?

Someone please tell me that they have a quiet intel iMac 20'/Firewire interface set up, I'm having problems with a lot of digital noise from my Saffire LE & badly am hoping it's 'fixable' or just a faulty unit but more so, praying it's not noise from the iMacs Power supply that will interfere with any firewire interface I get???
I've read many posts about G5's suffering from noisy psu's which was one factor in my choosing an intel iMac & I chose the Saffire on it's great reviews for sound quality, there's no way I can work with the noise I'm getting & I'm pretty much panicking that if it IS the iMac & firewire thats the problem I'll be screwed as i only have 6 pin firewire as a useable option (really don't want to use usb2)
Incidentally, the 'budget' set up I had previously (PC & soundblaster audigy) didnt suffer from any noise like this (at least not that was even audible with the mixer levels at conversational level!) which i guess rules out any blame of this on 'mains hum/interference'?
The noise is there with the saffire's monitor output knob at any setting & with no inputs connected, it;s even worse if i power the saffire with it's external psu instead of off buss power. I'm not using a firewire hub & I've tried switching firewire leads & removing the firewire hard drive i have in the other port in case this was affecting it.
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone with similar troubles or even better anyone thats NOT having this problem with a 20' intel iMac & firewire interface so at least i know there's light (& quiet!) at the end of the tunnel
    Adam
    Intel iMac 20'   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

funnily enough I'm going the other way, I have a rack of external modules/>sampler/fx etc & a crate of looms I've just unplugged as they've not been >turned on in so long!!!
    I hear you there!
The noise is there without any inputs at all to the interface, its defiantely >digital though, its like a toned version of the sound of an old telephone >modem.
What I mean, is try disconnecting everything, drives and all. You might even disconnect the interface and crank up the iMacs volume to see if it is there. If it is, you can try the UPS and see if that takes care of it. Then add them in one at a time. All it takes is one cheap power brick in the mix to cause all kinds of trouble (if your using powered monitors, that brick too). Noisy components can actually send noise back into the source power.
I know it can be really frustrating, especially if you have noise coming from more that one source. The key is to strip everything until it is quiet and then add them back in to see where the worst is. Then come up with a plan to try to get rid of the noise.

  • How to replace internal Hard Drive on iMac G5 iSight 1.9GHz

    Hello everyone,
The internal hard drive of my iMac has died (apparently), and is no longer detectable by Disk Utility. It occasionally makes a "click/tick" sound so I know it's still spinning inside. I currently am booted up from an external firewire drive with Tiger (10.4.11) installed.
I have been attempting to locate a service manual that shows how to open the case to my 17" iMac G5 iSight 1.9GHz model. I have found a service manual from the previous generation iMac G5 NON-iSight models, but the bottom access panel and screw locations differ from my iMac.
I have purchased an internal 500GB Seagate 7200.12 replacement drive.
Does anyone know where I can find a manual with pictures showing how to disassemble this particular iMac so I can install the new hard drive?

Ticking is a death rattle for drives and below are some helpful sites with pix.

The reason Apple don't publish pix of the insides of the iSight is that they say that there are no user serviceable parts.
