IMac G5 (iSight) won't power up

My iMac G5 with built-in iSight will not power up regardless of what is plugged in. I've disconnected power, waited, etc. Nothing I do seems to work. Disconnected my cable modem, firewire & USB devices... no change. I noticed 2 days ago my fans were LOUD while it was asleep. This happened once before. I powered it off and eventually powered it back up. I've tried various outlets as well and still won't power up. Last night the machine was just fine, even an hour after I put it to sleep. This morning... a dead iMac?
I've had this new iMac since Dec. 2005, about 5 months now. Is there anything else I can do myself to troubleshoot, or should I call Apple (who apparently has the Memorial Day off today). Or do I bring it back to CompUSA? Or possibly the Apple Store here in town?
iMac G5 (iSight)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi David - I had this big fear before going on travel. I started this thread Shut Down and people thought I was crazy or something. I don't believe your machine's problem is unique but systemic. In a few short weeks of playing around with my machine, it already exhibited some unusual behaviors in regards to power issues, Spinning Beach Ball - and in the last few days there have been quite a few posts regarding power up issues in particular invovling the iSight model (in my opinion the iMac G5 maybe turning into the Ford Explorer of the Computer world)
I will be returning from travel in another week or so and hope my machine will successfully boot up... I'll keep you posted, Good luck, Rick

  • Imac G5 Isight won´t connect automatically to Wireless Network

My Imac G5 Isight won´t connect automatically to my wireless network.
Everytime I turn it on, I have to manually select the network on the networks list.
I checked system preferences, and marked that I wanted to connect automatically, but still no luck.
It used to work just fine.
    Any ideas?
    I'm using 10.4.5 and a Netgear wgr614v6 router.

Try deleting your network keychains. Worked for me.

  • IMac G5 iSight won't shut down, won't install updates

    Hi all,
My iMac G5 (iSight) is giving me some grief.
    First, some details:
    OSX 10.5.7
I have been trying to update this machine and have successfully updated a few things, such as iTunes, iLife, etc. Updates that don't require a restart seem to go just fine. I am unable to install updates to QT7, Safari because the installer hangs up while "Configuring Installation" and won't go any further, no matter how long you leave it.
This iMac also will not shut down. The finder icons disappear, the desktop image remains, and the grey spinning wheel goes on and it will simply not shut down until forced using the power button.
It is starting and functioning otherwise with no problems.
I have disconnected it from drives and and the network in case there was something on the network keeping it, but no luck. I have run Disk Utility and repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and the SMU, as well. No joy. Incidentally, my partner's MacBook Air is also having the exact same problem as this iMac (I posted as well in the MBA forums), but my own laptop, the one I'm using now (details below) is having no problem at all and all updates have taken.
Has anyone any suggestions about anything else I can try to clear this issue before I ring Applecare tomorrow?
    Many thanks!

    Hi Miriam,
I've just tried to run a Hardware Test but the disk is clearly from an older iMac I once had (pre-iSight) because it doesn't want to know about it. I have doubts about it being a logic board problem, however, because I'm having the same problems with a MacBook Air (but not my MacBook Pro) and it only started after a recent round of updates. Worrying, yes, but apart from not installing updates that require a restart or simply shutting down both machines seem to be performing perfectly. It's a bit confusing.
    Thanks!

  • IMac G5 iSight won't boot from external optical drive . . . FW or USB

Hello, all. I have an iMac G5 iSight with a busted optical drive. Every six months or so, OS 10.4 eats itself (directory structure goes corrupt), and I need to reinstall.
The issue I'm having is that the computer won't boot off of my external optical drive. It's not shown as a choice in the Startup Manager, whether it's connected via USB or FireWire. Any ideas?

Okay, sorry this took so long . . .
Reset the SMU, NVRAM, and PRAM, no luck. Tried different FireWire port on the iMac, no luck. Tried different FireWire port on optical drive--LUCK.
    Ah.
Wipe and reinstall got underway, and finished the first part. Unfortunately, my OS 10.4 Disc 2 turned out to be scratched, and wiping the hard drive didn't get rid of the logic board error either.
Took it to Apple retail store, and it was BOA (bricked on arrival). Astoundingly, it would not power, POST, turn on the fans, nothing. They then replaced the power supply, so they could troubleshoot the hard drive/fan/whatever issue.
Now the computer POSTs, and they finished the reinstall, and said it passes their advanced diagnostics. I asked them to run the diags on the install CD, so they could see they fan error, and they agreed. That was around 7:00 last night.
Now, it's still at the store, and I'm eagerly awaiting word on what might REALLY be wrong. Thanks for your help so far!

  • New iMac with iSight won't take image

Hello all, hope you can help.
At my place of work we use a standard image on all of our client Macs. I have used this same image to setup G3 iMacs, G3 Powermacs, G4 Powermacs, G4 Powerbooks and G5 iMacs. When one of our iMac G5s broke down we got a replacement which was the new 1.9ghz iMac with iSight. However when i image this machine, all i get is the apple for a few seconds and then the circle with the line through it.
When this problem happens, usually repairing permissions, resetting PRAM or those usual things tend to help, but not this time.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Since this is a new machine, just to rule out a problem with the computer itself, I'd try installing from the discs to see if you have trouble doing it that way.

  • IMac G5 (iSight) won't boot

So this iMac G5 21" (iSight) is now stuck at a black screen - it chimes normally after the boot but the screen always stays black and the fans come up to full after a few seconds.
I did the PRAM thing CMD-Option-PR doesn't actually chime again - that's not working at all?
-The Optical drive is mostly dead... a prior condition here. Trying to boot from an external drive (by holding down the C key) doesn't work.
-Actually I've got two keyboards here - the original and a wired aluminum Apple keyboard. Neither lights up when I tap the caps lock... (they both work elsewhere)
-Now that it seems the keyboard is dead - I'm not sure it's worth mentioning that CMD-option-OF doesn't get me to an open firmware screen. Oh... powering up and holding the button down DOES beep and the light flashes quickly... then a normal chime and ... still black screen!
I've unplugged everything from the back and held the power button down while plugging in. Attempting to reset the SMU? No change.
I've noticed that when shutting down - sometimes it goes down when I first hit the button. Other times it seems to require holding it down.
We had high winds in the area last time this worked, it's on a battery backup - but I decided to shut it down anyway
So ... I'm looking for ideas. Bad capacitors? reset the SMU via the button on the motherboard?  New iMac 8-)
    Thanks in advance!

Well - I followed the link from WZZZ and things went as well as could be expected.
First, I checked on my iTunes account and saw that I only have 3 machines authorized - no need to pull the rip cord just yet to unathorize them all since my temporary machine is one of the three.
So I did pull some critial files over directly from the iMac drive connected via the HD adaptor. Then I put it back inside the iMac - no luck still BLACK screen.
Then I wanted my iTunes back so I connected my TM volume into a Lion machine and used Migration Assistant to move into that machine. I only had a couple of issues... First it makes you rename your user name - so now I have an extra that I have to manage somehow. And now I'm running out of disk space. Ah well could be worse.
Anyone not using Time Machine? I would find a way to get that going! it can really save you!

  • IMac Mid 2010 won't power up

I moved my iMac a bit towards me and as a result the power cable became disconnected and the iMac was turned off (not gracefully). I reconnected the power cord, but now it will not startup at all. It won't react to the power button, the hardware does not react at all.
I tested the power cord and it does deliver power, so the problem is in the iMac. I was wondering if there is a fuse somewhere that I could look at or anything else I can do/check.
    G

It required a number of attempts (4 to be exact) consisting of
    - unplug power cable
    - wait more that 15 seconds
    - plug power cable
    - wait more than 5 seconds
    - press button
But on the 4th attempt it booted. Doesn't feel very trustworthy, though.

  • IMac Second Display won't power down

I've added an LG 20" widescreen as a second display for my 20" Intel iMac (white). When the iMac sleeps or powers down, the LG display goes blank but not black, power button remains on and a "check signal cable" message displays.
A second problem is that I've been trying to get the two displays to look the same, color-wise. The color match option under displays>color gets it close, but that option has disappeared from the list of choices. Before, I could choose from the LG color settings as well as several generic choices (Color match, Adobe RGB, etc.) Those other choices have gone away. The calibrate option is still there. I just upgraded to Leopard. Did that have anything to do with it or was it just a coincidence?

Have you checked the Energy Saver settings? System Preferences / Energy Saver.
If the settings are what you want, you can try this. Change them to anything at all then change them back to what you want. The restart the computer and reset the PRAM.
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • New iMac w iSight won't record with iMovie

I got a new iMac G5 w a built in iSight, but I can't record video with the camera. Every time I try to record with iMovie, it doesn't recognize the built in camera and it always comes up as "no camera attached." How do I record video?

This is the same topic as another thread started today. Quicktime Pro does record from the built-in iSight as does EchoFX's USBVision. Several people have submitted to Apple an iMovieHD feature request to enable direct capture from the built-in iSight. Maybe Apple will offer that in a future iMovie update.

  • Dead iMac G3 suddenly won't power on. PRAM battery or Power Supply?

iMac G3 350 slot load USB only running 10.4.11
    i love this little guy.
it's been running almost non stop for a few years as a file server... only restarted maybe a dozen times during that period. i can't remember ever shutting it down.
i had to move it recently. might have been unplugged from a wall socket for a minute or so. plugged it back in but left it powered off for a few days.
went to turn it on recently and nothing. not a chime, not a light, not a click or hard drive spin-up. zero. pushed the PMU reset button once. still nothing. i've taken the PRAM battery out for now.
my question is this: is it possible the power supply is dead and a PRAM battery will not fix the iMac? is there any way to tell before spending money on a new battery i may not need?
    thanks!

    Hello Nicholas,
I recently retired my hard working 350 slot so I know how great the computer can be.
Unplugging for a moment should not have affected the battery.
I would respectfully suggest you start with the simple things such as:
    1. - Make certain the power source is not on a switch and that it is good
    2. - Be certain the power chord is fully seated in the back of the computer and wall socket.
    3. - If trying to start from the keyboard button, try using the button on the face of the computer
perhaps the keyboard is not fully plugged into the usb port.
I always like to start with the simple things when I have a problem.
Now that the battery is removed it could cause a bit of a problem. I think I would install the battery
and check the above mentioned ideas. If still no power, then I would replace the battery.
It doesn;t seem logical that the power supply would just go as a result of the board.
I would try to get the computer up and running.
One last tip.......when my slot load was starting to go it acted odd. I would let the computer sit for a day or two and it would then start. It was irratic at best but the old computer allowed me a few last
boots so that I could back up to my external.
It is a great computer and sounds like it served you well it deserves a few chances.
I hope you replace the battery, plug and it re-starts. Keep it plugged in once the battery is replaced/returned .....Best of Luck Jim

  • IMac G4 20" won't power up

My trusty iMac g4 20" 1.25 ghz computer will not power up .  I get no light, sound, nothing, when I push the power up button on the back of the computer.  I have pushed the PMU button (under the bottom cover by the airport card) and still nothing.  It's acting like the power supply has failed. I can pull the PSU, no problem and see them used on ebay for around $30.00.  Can anyone tell me how to Bench Test a Power supply unit for these computers.
Note, I do not see any swollen capacitors on the Logic board or on the power supply itself.  So no obvious signs of damage.
I just hate to start buying parts (willy -nilly) for this computer when it's so old, but would if I could prove the old part to be bad.
I've been waiting for  the next generation of iMac before I upgrade to a new computer.  (Any day now right?)

I have essentially the same problem. I don't have a solution, but I will post data from some of my tests, and hope someone can clue us in on whether it's the PS, logic board, or a loose chip.
I have a 20" iMac G4 1.25 GHz unit (with the white pod body). At first, it would start not turning on when I hit the power button, but after hitting it many time it would turn on, and then stay on fine and even restart fine, but if you turned it off and left it off several hours, it would be hard to start again.
Next, it shut crashed in the middle of working a few times, on hot days and would not restart until later when everything cooled off.
Finally, it will not start at all.  The fan comes on, the CD drive makes a noise, but no HD movement is obvious and there is no "beep".
I looked over the power supply and only the 100uF 25V capacitor had a bulging top, so I replaced it.  One of the bigger caps near the output has a black mark on the metal on top of it, but it looks like ink and i see no signs of bulging or a crack in the "cross" on top.
I tested the power supply somewhat.
The +5V and +12V that go to the disk drives looks okay. (the red and yellow wires vs. black ground wire in the connectors)
Testing the green wire going to the motherboard connector, it has about 25V
The blue wire is about 3.6V
The white wire is about 9.8V
(all positive voltages as compared to the black ground wire.)
My power supply looks quite different from the one you have here:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-iMac-G4-A1065-20-1-25GHz-Power-Supply-614-0260-/33 0784955606?pt=PCA_UPS&hash=item4d0451dcd6
Mine has lots of metal heatsinks and the blue and white wires come out of the PCB from a different spot and some of the components look different.  Also, my motherboard is green whereas yours is blue.  Also, on mine, I can't see how to unplug the big cable connector from the motherboard. It looks kind of like everything is soldered on. I don't see two parts to unclip where the big black connector is.  So, I tested all those voltages on the power supply PCB while it was still attached to the motherboard.
I tested the PRAM battery and it is ok.
Do you have any suggestions as to what is wrong?
Basically, the Hard disk drive doesn't spin up and the computer doesn't beep. Only the fan comes on and the CD make a little sound when I hit power. (and then when I hold in the power button for 5 secs, the fan turns off).
One more clue... I just unplugged the data connector from the hard disk to the motherboard. When it is unplugged, the drive spins up, but when it is plugged back in to the motherboard, it doesn't try to spin at all.
    Thanks for any help!

  • IMAC G5 ALS won't power up

I recently acquied an iMAC G5 Ambient Light Sensor that had no hard drive, RAM, fans. I have added a SATA 200 Gig HD and 2 512MB PC3200 low-density RAM sticks. I also brought new upper fans and also replace power supply. I get the first two diagnostic LEDs to light up. The fans and hard drive all click on, but now boot chime. I have tried to reset the PRAM, it booted up fine but froze after 15 minutes during install process. Had to hard shut off and now nothing again. I have find what appears to be a series of jumper just about the power supply that have nothing attach and can't find any documentation on them...in small print I can read SMU, but that is in contradictation to what I have read on the Apple site...any help or guidance in this matter would be appreciated. I am a power user with intel and amd pc and am trying to cross-over to the mac world. Help!

  • IMac DV won't power up

My iMac DV 400 won't power up. When I press the power button, the light comes on for a second or so, and I can faintly hear the drive start to spin up but then before the computer is able to check any other hardware, before it makes the standard "bong" sound, it just shuts off. I can hear it make a faint clicking sound just before it shuts off. Sounds like a switch is opening. If I press the power button again, nothing happens. I have to unplug the computer and plug it back in to try to power up again, but it just does the same thing.
The computer is plugged directly into the wall (not through a ups or any other device). I tried with a different power cord, but no impact.
Any ideas for what to do to correct this problem?

I have heard reports suggesting that a problematic PMMU can cause the logic board battery to run down in a matter of days. At least, I recall an Apple Knowledgebase article about Power Mac G4's that said a crashed PMMU, if left in that state, drains battery in 4-6 days. I don't know if this applies to the iMac, but logic board batteries are cheap and worth a try.
If you have already updated the firmware for OS X, then there is no need to do it again. The current firmware updater is the one that's posted to Apple's site. It has not changed since 2001.
You can try the usual things that people try when machines don't power on: reseat RAM, swap out RAM, remove and reinstall the logic board, blow on it, whack it, dust it (not with a vacuum -- with canned air), check connections, check fuses on the analog board, disconnect all drives, replace the drive with a test one to see if the drive is the problem, etc.
If these are not the problem, you can repeat some steps (to see if it is an intermittant fault). Otherwise, you will need to download the appropriate service manual from this page:
    http://www.whoopis.com/computer_repair/
Detailed therein is the way in which you can test (using a voltmeter, and with extreme care) whether the analog board/the power supply are good. Conducting this test will require you to have the machine powered on and will put you inches away from 26kV of voltage used to drive the CRT (at the back of the tube and on some of the components). Personally, I have never done this because I consider it too risky. If you are experienced with electronics, go ahead, otherwise I'd wait until someone else on the forum take a look at this and suggest things that I might have missed.
Based on what you said though -- clicking sounds, and power off shortly after powering up, I am guessing an internal short somewhere is causing a safety mechanism to trip out and power down your computer, esp. when it will ignore the power button. Check for a loose screw (pick it up and jiggle it, do you hear a loose part?) Check for things that might be causing a short. If you don't see anything obvious then it might be a component failure (specifically, a capacitor, a chip, or the flyback transformer we talked about earlier) that is causing the shorts. Tracing component-level faults in an iMac is beyond my technical expertise.
The iMac I picked up curbside has a screw loose. So far I haven't been able to find it, but it isn't causing any shorts, so I just left it.

  • IMac G5 (iSight model) won't start up - video included

    http://s1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc449/langdonX1/?action=view&current=imac071 .mp4
An imac 1.9Ghz G5 won't boot up at all. When you press the power button you  hear a sight whirr and then a faint high pitched hum. Sometimes the power light turns on for a second in unison with the attempt. I tried to reset the SMU but that did nothing.
I took the cover off and saw nothing obvious wrong.
At the 3 and 8 second mark in the video you can hear the sounds it makes but you may have to turn up the volume.
Is this symptomatic of a dead power supply or some other problem? Any solutions to get it working again?

    from your linked article:
This article does not apply to iMac G5 (iSight) computers.
iMacs with an iSight have no back to them. You remove the face of the computer to access the logic board and the screen has to be removed to get to that. So all that stuff in the apple knowledgebase article can't be done to this model.

  • Both iMac iSights Won't Start Up After Upgrading To 10.4.6

I just bought 2 iMac iSight's clearance from Mac Mall - with Applecare, but I can't use it until Mac Mall resets the serial numbers with Apple, who currently thinks they were bought in January, so no chat help. Ack! Downside to buying open stock clearance! Anyway, when setting them up, I let them upgrade to 10.4.6. They did the first reboot, then totally froze on the second. Both of them, exactly the same. And I don't have the right Torx driver to do the internal reset. What happened to the flat head screws on earlier iMacs? I tried the power cord in and out with the power button depressed trick. Nada. Help, I have new employees coming in tomorrow expecting computers to sit at. TIA,
    Fred

<<If you look at MacInTouch, you will find reams of complaints about MacMall. You have to be very firm with them, and threaten all kinds of dire things.>>
I'm sure they're all criminals, but I have one salesperson who cuts me some deals, so sucker that I am I go back. I once had a G4 problem with a defective RAM slot - inserting the stick bent the contacts both sides across the middle, and I was going to be stuck for a new m-board on a machine that had only booted once, and they weren't very nice to me about it, until by chance they noticed the same thing in other machines of similar serial number. With their testimony, Apple gave me a "one time only" repair on it - how very generous of them.
Back to current problem, and thanks all for the help - power cable manipulation has gotten one of the two to boot up normally, thank god, and the other is being slightly more responsive (rapid manipulation of power button makes front panel LED and mouse LED light up momentarily), but hasn't booted yet.
