IMac G5, Leopard - dual video question

I want to add an external monitor to my G5, bought the cable but the external monitor "mirrors" the display and the OS reduces the visible screen on the iMac significantly. In Leopard, does anyone know if there are changes that would allow me to extend the display in this manner rather than simply mirror it? Please help... two trips to the Apple store is great but wearing me out.
THANKS!

Thank you! This absolutely took care of my problem. I have to clarify my earlier comments though, the iMac currently is running Tiger and my assumption was that since Tiger didn't have that capability, perhaps Leopard would have unleashed its feature in 10.5 so that was what I was looking for.
Now that I've loaded the SSD utility on the iMac running Tiger, my hope was to upgrade it to Leopard in the coming weeks but don't know what sort of impact it would have.
Any ideas?

  • IMac G5 Leopard Install (New Question, Old Problem)

I've been through a number of the boards over the last two weeks, but I have yet to solve my install problem. I bought the Leopard family pack and promptly installed on my intel mac mini (no problems). However, I have not been able to install on my iMac G5. After I insert the Leopard disk, go through the various prompts and restart the Mac, all I get is a grey screen the spinning pizza. I never get the option to "archive and install". I have gone through the terminal and removed some of the application enhancer programs (as noted in earlier posts). However, the result is still the same. Am I doomed to backing up my disk, wiping it clean, and installing Leopard at that point? Beforehand, thanks for any advice and help.

When I insert the Leopard DVD, it does boot and the "install leopard" icon appears on the screen. After clicking on the icon and inputing my password, my Mac restarts. At that point, I can hear the DVD turning in the drive but the only thing that comes up is the grey screen and the turning circle.

I plan on keeping the iMac and PB until they cease to work ( have replaced HD's on both already).  I mostly use the PB-- lots of writing, surfing, email, etc.
    Your thoughts?

The minimum Mac specs (from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) are :
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.2 or later recommended (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access
So you only need Leopard, not Snow Leopard

Oh my! Obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. But I do know that my goal was to do both---backup AND free some space. My iMAc is old (2006) and I upgraded it a year or so ago to Snow Leopard. I didn't think I had the capability of backing up without an external drive, but  maybe I do since I upgraded. Do I?
But I bought this My Book mostly for freeing space because I like to make cards in Photoshop and I'm forever running out of space when I get too many layers (don't really know what I'm doing there, either).
Is there some way that I can rectify my mistakes and start all over?
Thank you so much for  beng so prompt with your reply and patient with mine. I tried for so long to see the dialog box with the library listings. When I launched iPhoto, even with holding down the Option key, it kept immediately launching into the full screen. Finally, after an hour of doing it over and over again, it worked when I held the key down for 5 minutes. Then when I was typing my reply, I kept getting a message to "Request Time Out." Didn't know how to do that, so kept hitting the OK button and kept typing for another half minute. Finally, when ready to send, Safari couldn't do it. "Try again" exasperated me until I realized I would have to begin again and use Firefox. When I got there and ready to type, I got the message  that my message had been retrienved and did I want to use it?!!
So your kindness is very much appreciated.

New 27" iMac. Three (ridiculously basic) questions:
    1) How do I take my old 24" iMac wireless keyboard and pair it with my new computer? I really despise this little keyboard that came with the current computer.

*Start your 24" iMac, click the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar at the top (it shows the clock, wifi, audio level, etc), then select the Keyboard and then disconnect.*
*Also from that bluetooth menu, goto 'Open Bluetooth Preferences' and you should see the keyboard there as well. There is a little 'minus' sign in the lower left of that window. Select the Keyboard and press the minus sign and it should remove the Keyboard from that iMac.*
*On your new iMac, make it discoverable (the device and the new Mac), and you should be able to pair it from there.*
    2) I default to Preview and Text Edit when I want to use Adobe Acrobat and Word. How do I change this?
    *Answered in previous posts.*
    3) When I sync my iPhone it does not download the iPhone photos to iPhoto. I see the device in iPhoto. How do I download my photos into iPhoto so I have them resident on my computer and can open and manipulate in Photoshop?
*Shot in the dark. So open up iTunes with your iPhone connected/plugged into your Mac.*
*on the left side of iTunes where you see your iPhone, click on the iPhone icon. And on the window next to left bar you should see a row of tabs at the top and at the far right you should see a tab for Photos.*
*Click on that tab and select Sync photos.*
*That should allow you to sync your photos from your iphone to your iphoto library*
    hope that helps

  • How good is a Macbook Pro with dual video cards for gaming?

I've been a PC guy my whole life (aside from my iPhone which I love). My gf has been pushing me to try out a mac and considering how my PC laptops have a pretty good track record of dying on me or encountering some other problems after a year or two, I can't help but consider making the investment. The only thing is, I'm a big gamer and usually get the latest games. I'm not super tech savvy though I do my research and get a sense of what kind of specs are better and worse.
In terms of gaming, I always assumed that more ram = better. In that sense, I'm a little put off that even the most expensive MacBook Pro only comes with 4 gigs of ram (which is what my year and a half old laptop has now) especially when it seems most newer laptops have 8 gigs minimum for a fraction of the price (and 16 gigs if you're willing to spend as much as you would on the most expensive macbook pro). Does RAM somehow work differently on a Mac or is it truly that little?
Also, how does the whole dual video card thing work, does that mean I'd be having the power of those two cards put together?
Personally, I've been leaning towards the Asus G53SX-NH71 because I can buy it for less than the cost of the cheapest macbook pro and as far as gaming purposes go it seems to have more power than even the most expensive Macbook which costs over double the price.
Am I missing something here? Do the dual video cards really bring that much to the table or for gaming purposes am I better off with a PC?
    Thanks.

I've been watching this forum for years, and I'll have to say that gamers are not a big group around here.  A few things.  First, getting 8GB of RAM for the MacBook Pro is cheap.  Most people either don't care, pay Apple to do it, or, like me, DIY.  The max you put in a MBP is 8GB, so no 16GB, unless you were looking at the iMac or MacPro.
Second, there is no dual video card in a MacBook Pro.  There is an integrated video card, an Intel HD3000, which shares RAM with the CPU, or a discrete video card, an AMD, various versions on different MBP's.  The Intel is for low battery usage.  The AMD is more powerful, and it's to be used when you've got power.  The video card has more applications than just gaming, but also in video and photo editing.
No one here is going to talk you into one platform or another.  If you are only going to game in Windows, then it's a waste to get a Mac.  If you're going to game in Windows but want the Mac side to do everything else, the build quality and elegance of the Mac will far exceed most products out there.  You can run Windows in Boot Camp natively, and as I understand, gamers love it, because the Mac is actually a better Windows machine than most Windows machines.  But I don't play games, so I have no proof.
So the choice is yours.  And we could argue all day long about the side by side comparison of a cheap Windows machine vs. the Mac.  You are using the price vs. price comparison that is a false dichotomy, ignoring how one values various features.  For example, the trackpad on a MacBook Pro far exceeds (and I mean light year exceeds) anything on any other laptop out there.
I spent 10 minutes answering your question.  I'm not debating you on x vs. y.  The choice is totally on what you're going to do.  Most of us are trying to contribute to the world, so gaming is low on the needs list.

  • After Effects is NOT using the full Twelve GB of memory on my Mac Pro late 2013 dual video cards

I would like to know if there is a reason why AE CC12 and CC13 (2014) is not using the full amount of video card memory on my MP late 2013. It's six GB per freaking card I invested in and its not accessing it.
Is there a work around this issue?

Why shouldn't it. When I upgraded to this new Mac Pro late 2013 with its dual video cards. Premier turned into a blasting fast editor. I no longer need to render my edited cuts and the scrubbing of preview and timeline footage is phenomenal. The only performance boost I've seen in AE with this new system is in rendering and I can't even say its double as fast in comparison to Premier or Encoder and its an 8-Core system with 32GB of ram. Everything else is flying.
So again to answer your why should it. I rebuttal with "Why shouldn't it". The other two mentioned programs are using GPU resources to improve performance why is AE so behind the curve.
I'm not the only one asking why. I was in the audience at a Dmala meeting here in LA with Todd Kopriva and Al Mooney previewing AE and Premier 2014.
People kept asking Todd about performance boost in between questions about new features. Todd finally just asked what do you prefer a couple of new features or performance boost. Everyone wanted performance boost over new features. If you think I'm making this up go ask Todd Kopriva.

  • Anyone using a mini as a Leopard-Snow Leopard dual boot?

I have Leopard (10.5.8) and Snow Leopard (10.6.4) installed on my mini for dual booting, and when I reboot from Snow Leopard into Leopard, the video card output is completely distorted. I have to restart a second time in Leopard to resolve this.
Anyone else using a Leopard-Snow Leopard mini and are you having/not having display problems?
Note this might be specific to Snow Leopard 10.6.4.

A strange thing happened. When using Snow Leopard, I opened the desktop folder for the Leopard volume in icon view and moved some of the icons around.
Then when I rebooted into Leopard the display problem didn't happen (although there was still some weirdness with the blue screen being chopped up during bootup). I found all the icons on my Leopard desktop were de-arranged. I started manually rearranging them and then did "Clean Up Selection" on some, and the display problem suddenly occurred.
So this is looking like it might be something to do with the DS_Store file. My theory:
    1. Snow Leopard does something to the video ROM that either:
    — A. requires some new DS_Store format, or
    — B. is just buggy with certain complex DS_Store data (note that I have ~100 icons on the Leopard desktop, carefully arranged and colored)
    2. When I rearranged the icons in Snow Leopard, this either:
    — A. wrote a Snow Leopard-style DS_Store file for the Leopard desktop, or
    — B. just wrote a simpler DS_Store file that didn't have the problem complex data
    3. Then back in Leopard when I fiddled with the icons, this wrote a new DS_Store file (either older Leopard format, or just more complex)
    4. The video card was still in "Snow Leopard mode" at this point as I hadn't rebooted Leopard a second time, so the desktop display went distorted as soon as the new DS_Store file went into effect.
    5. For some reason Leopard will write over the bad/new settings Snow Leopard writes to the video ROM, but only on the second restart.

  • What is best password AP to sync with Imac (Snow Leopard)?

What is best password AP to sync with Imac (Snow Leopard)?

Here are a few analog to digital devices and approaches I have had success with:
    1. Sony DA-2
    2. Most Name brand Firerwire or i.Link Minidv Camcorders with Digital Pass thru feature will suffice since more often than not this feature is also included ... But read the owner's manual or check online to make certain it's included.
    3. Canopus products work perfectly nearly 100% of the time and will keep the video and audio in synch much better than other devices. It can take the form of a pci card (if your mac is so equipped) and if not, then a canopus media converter box will also work (as already mentioned above):

    4. Another approach I use to simply "dump" mini dv or VHS tapes to Dvd-R is a DVD Player/Recorder like the one shown below with Digital inputs. In this case (i.Link / FW)):

  • All 30 minutes my Macs (iMac/Snow Leopard, MacMini/Lion) are loosing the connection to the Windows Servers (2 Networks: Home with Home Server 2011 (Server 2008) and Office with Home Server V1 (Server 2003)).

    Hallo,
    Hello,
I run the office and at home each a Microsoft Home Server. In both networks, in addition to various Windows computers, a Mac is available.
The particular "configuration" is as follows:
    - Apple MacMini (Late 2011, as HTPC) with Lion via wifi via AVM Fritzbox 7390 to Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 (Windows Server 2008).
    - Apple iMac (Late 2010, desktop PC) with Snow Leopard by Lan on AVM Fritzbox 7270 on Microsoft Windows Home Server V1 (Windows Server 2003)
All operating systems on current conditions with all patches and updates.
The Fritz boxes running with the latest firmware
    Now to the problem:
Both Macs are loosing every 30 minutes the contact to the server. The connection is "re-"established about 1-2 minutes later. On MacMini (HTPC), the film or music is stopped for the above period. Thereafter, the film / music goes on. With the iMac (workstation) a document loaded from the server can no longer be saved or printed.
The MacMini has shown this phenomenon directly in connection with the WHS. However, the iMac has been working about 1.5 years with no problems. This problem only occurs for about 6-9 months
Because of different WHS and OS X versions are affected and also different Fritz boxes are used and it seems to be a general problem in the interplay Windows / OS X to be present.
When the iMac is the exact date of disconnection does not occur.
With the Mac Mini, the time can however be determined relatively easily. From the Event Viewer on Windows Server is unfortunately no clear error image. At the particular time but appeared relatively often, but not always (!) In Windows Security Logs the error 4625 (Failed to log on an account) on. This would indicate a rights issue.
Searching for a solution (so far unsuccessfully, unfortunately), I stumbled over the problem of the Server Infrastructure License Services (silsvc) in Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (every 30 min!). Maybe a connection?

Hi, and thank you for your reply!
My reason for not posting this in the server forum is that I suspect it is a clien issue. All my other clients connect happily to the server which leads me to believe the server is configured correctly.
Only my the two MacBook Pro's are having problems.

  • New IMac 27"with dual internal hard drives

How do I manage Data on my new IMac 27"with dual internal hard drives?  I have just migrated my data to my new computer.  Since I've done it from a TM backup, it all went to the Analog HD. Ressearching online I've figured I could re-run Migrating assistant and replace different data between the SSD and the Analog.  My problem now is: I want to keep my Music Library (iTunes), my Aperture Library and my documents on the analog, and use the SSD for System, Users and Apps.  Aperture, is easy, because both Aperture and iPhoto can find their way, bt iTunes and My documents are a issue.  Can Anyone help me?

Install OS X on the SSD:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your SSD volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on
the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero
Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to change the target disk to your SSD.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
After you boot from the SSD open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the user account and select Advanced Options. You will see a Home Dir: field with a Browse button on the right. Click on the button. Navigate to the HDD's Users folder. Select your account folder then click on the Open/Choose button. You must restart immediately.
Upon the restart your SSD system will now be using your actual Home folder located on the HDD. You can then go about installing your applications or copying them from the HDD to the Applications folder on the SSD (and also from the Utilities folder on the HDD to the one on the SSD.) You will likely need to do some transfers of the Applications Support and Preferences folders found in the main Library folder.

My iMac has developed a video display problem. Everything now appears in a strange, cartoonish way. Purples, greens, blues. Can this be fixed, and if so, any idea how much it might cost? Also, could I output to a seperate monitor? I plan to replace the unit , but cannot right now. Thanks!

Go to System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing.
In the Display area, reset it to "Black on white" by clicking that checkbox.
You can also reset it by pressing Command-Option-Control-8
