IMac G5 Motherboard fried

Hi,
I have a friend whose g5 machine needs a new motherboard. I'm not a computer professional, but I'm pretty adept - have done various hardware repair and replacement on PC's and memory upgrades on Macs - and I can't help but think that this is a repair we could do without a lot of sturm und drang.
Is this replacement - of a motherboard - something I can do myself? Is it cost prohibitive? What are your thoughts and suggestions for getting the replacement parts? Thanks!

Welcome to Discussions - if you are fairly adept, careful and can follow instructions take a look at [this|http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/repairing-apple-imac-g5-motherboard.php] and see if it helps.
Let us know how you get on.

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

  • Motherboard fried -- replaced with new computer  -- now need to salvage catalogs from  old drives

Rather than replace the fried motherboard on an old box running Windows XP, I bought a new box running 64-bit Windows 8.1.  I have my two 11-year-old internal sata drives attached to the new box with USB enclosures, plus my old 300 MB usb drive.  I have fresh backups of 'My Catalog', 'My Catalog 2', and all the 12,000 photos.  I also appear to still have download rights to my original copy of Adobe Elements 9 (thank you for that, Adobe).
I copied the contents of the old C drive (now 'J:') onto the new C drive under AppData/Local/Adobe/Elements Organizer/Catalogs and Pictures/Adobe/Digital Camera Photos and then stopped, realizing I didn't know what I was doing.
What I DON'T have is the ability to 'repair' or optimize the catalog or to view the catalog to identify original drive letters for the second internal drive and the external usb drive (now they are 'K:' and 'L'), nor do I know what else besides 'My Catalog' and the photos need to be on the new C drive.  Or if I even have the option of moving to the new C drive, as opposed to continuing to run off what is now 'J:'.
So, I'm thinking that if I just install Elements 9 again, a)  it won't find any of my photos b) I will probably have empty albums, since I haven't found any 'My Collection' files and c) I will lose all my version sets.  Or  maybe I'm just being too pessimistic.
Ideally I would like to put everything on the new C drive and just get rid of the three old drives, but the main thing is to salvage the version sets and albums.
Can anyone advise me on how to set the drives up so that Elements will find my version sets and albums when I do a fresh install of Photoshop Elements?

I was indeed too pessimistic.  I purchased a copy of Elements 13; installed it; went into Manage Catalogs and pointed it at My Catalog; and then took the options to convert, repair, and optimize.  Lo and behold, within seconds it  had found all my folders and albums and everything was there as it should be.

  • Anybody tried to repair an iMac G5 motherboard?

Our iMac G5, the first version, just died a couple of months after the end of our Apple Care subscription! Sic!
Anyway after consulting some serviceproviders we had to accept the death of the motherboard, but the last serviceperson we asked, asked me to open the shell and tell me what the capacitors looked like. There are 25 of them and almost 10 had something leaking out from the top, most of the others were bulging and almost bursting.
OK you have to buy a new motherboard or buy a new computor - or do as he successfully did - change the capacitors to new ones! Since I know a little about electronics and how to handle a soldering iron I wanted to give it a try. If I could get my mac up and running for some $50 instead of $1200 it would be worth it.
I checked the values of the capacitors - I thought. But 5 of them had a different value than the others. That I didn't notice before removing all of them and now I don't know where they sat. Is there anyone who can help me out. Maybe tell me the C-numbers of the 1000pF 16V capacitors or discribing where they shall sit.

That's also one of the reason's why you want to get the the MLB replaced.
As an ACMT, I can tell you that the issue is related to what we call a 560 issue
otherwise known as the iMac Repair Exchange Program. The capictors that
burst on the MLB pretty much trash the MLB, which also affects the connectors
to themain components, one being the LCD, which means that your
LCD Connecting port is blown and it isn't telling the LCD when and how to backlight.
The fact you are getting power to the LCD, and images, means that the LCD is ok.
But your MLB controllers are shot, I'd be surprised if the fans don't constantly run,
you often have disc access errrors from CD, etc.
no easy answer but I'd get the MLB replaced ASAP. Eventually you'll make the problem worse.
In any event, a qualified Apple Service Provider should only be charging you
out of warranty Labor and Part exchange price from Apple. I can't quote on
their Labor charges, but a Mother board exchange for an OOW bad MLB
    is only $535 US.
    YMMV, I'd shop around......

  • Motherboard fried ???

hp g60t-200 notebook : When switched on, the lappy goes 'brrrrrr'.... and then blank (black screen). It remains in that state for like a lifetime. Unfortunately, the warranty has also expired. Showed it to a technician, he says the motherboard is probably fried (though i did never put it in an oven).
#The isssue is that the screen remains black from the moment i switch on my laptop.no response whatsoever.
Any geniuses out there who can suggest any other alternative (even hope will do!!!) apart from me digging into my pocket for a new motherboard.

    Hello KrazyRanger,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand you are experiencing issues with the motherboard. Unfortunately, it is broken, and there is no supported method of salvaging it. I apologize for the inconvenience.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks for choosing the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Liquid damage, motherboard fried. Hard drive ok?

Dog peed on my MacBook Pro, motherboard likely fried.  Should my hard drive be completely ok?  Ok to put it in another computer?

The odds there are not as good. If the moisture created a short, the battery may be fried.  But, take it out and test it.
Note, if you have a unibody MBP, you probably will need a #0 Triwing driver to remove the battery.  This is not a common tool found in a hardware store.
    Ciao.

  • IMac g4 motherboard upgrade???

    Hello,
If i Could snag myself a imac g4 1 ghz motherboard and take it and my mac to my local apple store would they install it for me because i want to install os X leopard please respond ASAP
    Thank you

Hi, if the iMac you have listed in your sig is the iMac you are planning on doing the MB swap then you
probably won't get it to work since the motherboard and cabling is quite a bit different. It will not be a straight swap at least from what I can see since I just had an iMac 1GHz apart for a repair and upgrade.
First, the heat pipe pads are different. I believe yours will only have the one contact point while the 1GHz MB has two.
Also you have two cables plus HD/CD ribbon cable from the top to the motherboard while the 1GHz has a single connector which is entirely different than the ones you have. Even the power cable looks different....
I only have pix up on my website for the older 700MHz as I just got the 1GHz yesterday but from what I can see it won't work.

  • Imac 2011 motherboard

Hello.I would like to know what is the model of the motherboard thas is in my 27'' imac 3.1 (2011 model).I know that it comes from Intel but which is the model? How can i find it out?Thank you in advance.

If you are interesting in finding out things like the chipset, sound generation, and the like, you'll have to look for websites run for/by Apple geeks. If you are trying to find a replacement that's a good place to start but you could also look for sites that cater to do-it-yourself repairs. As a nerd and once upon a time modder, I used to be able to tell people all kinds of things about various mobo and the advantages of one manufactuer over another. On the Apple side that kind of thing really doesn't exist.

  • Replacing imac 333 motherboard...help!

I purchased an iMac 333 for my mother last month and we just found out that the ethernet port is shot after many attempts of trying to go online. The guy I purchased it from told me that the motherboard needed to be replaced. Could someone give me tips on how to replace it myself or point me in the direction of a site that can help me out. Thanks.

Is there any hope of some help from Toshiba?

    Hi
    Thats a sad story :(
But I think the Toshiba ASP in your country should be able to help you
If you have a hardware issue with your notebook, you have to contact always the local Toshiba authorized service partner.
Explain the guys the whole story and ask for the further handling.
Unfortunately but this is everything what I can suggest
    Good luck

  • Help, my 3+ year old iMac has a fried logic board

I have an iMac G5 PPC 1.8GHz 20". Within the past year or so Apple replaced the power supply as my serial# fell under the G5 Repair Extension Program. It was working fine until recently when the screen would lock up and require reboots. Now it will not even boot up. I took it back to the Apple Store and was told it had a bad logic board. The tech showed me the bulging capacitors. The estimate for the repair is a whopping 600+ bucks.
I am very reluctant to invest that much dough when I was already thinking of selling this one and buying a new Intel based iMac. Besides, I need the money for gasoline for the next week! I thought I could attempt the repair myself until I found I could not get the part any cheaper than what Apple was going to charge.
This really bugs me as I've had the computer for just over 3 years. Any ideas on what I should do? Try to sell the remaining good parts? Can it even be used as a monitor? The display is still in fine shape. Hard drive is good too (250G). Thanks in advance.
    - Rick

My nearly 3 year old iMac died a couple months ago and after jumping through some hoops to get the date of purchase reset to what it should've been, I took my iMac in to a local service provider to get it fixed under the repair extension program.
I was then told when they diagnosed my computer that the logic board and power supply were both dead and needed replacing. When I brought up the repair extension program I was told that it only covered the power supply and not the logic board.
Should I contact Apple Customer Relations or should I go back to the people who diagnosed my computer and plead my case with them?
P.S The serial number of my computer falls into the range posted on the Repair Extension Program for the Video and Power Issues page, so I'd imagine my computer qualifies since it isn't 3 years old yet.
    Thanks

  • Is my motherboard fried?

Hey guys, so i finished building my computer but i have recently come across some problems. the computer would start to hard freeze, and the display would stop working completely (as if there was no video connection). and so i unplugged the power to my graphics card while the computer was on (i know I'm an idiot). now the computer can hardly run. it stops working after about 10 minutes. my mother board is an a88xm-e45 and i was wondering if the board is still okay or if i will need to replace it? i disconnected my only hdd and when i turn the computer on, the bios screen won't even show up

    Hi
Doing what you did wasn't smart indeed. But I think that something was bad since "new" and caused such issue(s) at first place. Probably removing a GPU this was made it worse? Please see >>Posting Guide<< before we go any further.
Also try clearing CMOS ( >>Clear CMOS Guide<< ) with power cord and battery removed.

  • Battery exchange program : thanks for the iMac motherboard!

    Hi!
I had problems with my battery.
Its serial number made me able to use the battery exchange program.
Thanks to UPS, after lots of difficulties, I received my parcel. How big it was!
I understood fast why it was so big: it was a iMac G5 motherboard. I don't need it. I need a battery.
What I wonder is: who do I need to contact, and how? (I'm French).
    Thx in advance!
    iBook G4 12" 1.2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Apple just sent me a replacement battery, and I can keep the motherboard (lol)! Thx a lot, even if I spent over half an hour calling an expensive number...

  • Imac Shutting Down on its own

Hi all. I've got an iMAC Intel running snow leopard. Today it shut down twice on me while i was on the internet. There was no warning and I had to switch it back on manually. I've had a look in the system log (as this is about the limit of my knowledge) and the following is an extract from roughly the time it occurred. It means nothing to me, but hopefully someone out there know?...any help greatly appreciated.

My iMac was doing something similar before it died completely. Motherboard fried. Mine was also an Intel iMac. I hope yours doesn't suffer the same fate.

  • Dead motherboard and power supply.. now what?

I am pretty upset that my iMac had a meltdown. It worked wonderfully and perfectly until last week. The Apple store told me that the motherboard fried and so did the power supply. They told me it wasn't worth it to replace the parts since it would cost over 1200 dollars to replace. I seriously do not have money for a new computer and I do not have the credit rating that could help me finance a new one.
I've had the computer since 2004, you could say that over 4 years of perfect performance could be good, but the computer was a gift from my dad who has recently passed, and I don't think it's going to be easy for me to give it up. If I were to buy the parts myself and do the install, would be it be worth it? My questions are ... where can I buy the motherboard and new power supply? Can I buy directly from Apple and install myself? Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to Discussions - sorry about your loss, there certainly are places that sell replacement parts for your Rev A - look at [welovemacs.com] to get an idea of prices. Buying from Apple usually means higher prices, but you can check with them as well, part of the $1200 was surely labor costs.
