IMac G5 (no isight) power supply keeps failing

I had some trouble with my iMac G5 (no iSight) about 5 months ago with the power supply. I replaced the power supply, worked great for 5 months and now it's doing the same thing (turning off suddenly, trouble rebooting). I've done all the resetting of PRAM, NVRAM and SMU. Wouldn't start at all (white light would just flash) until I reset the SMU again. Didn't see any leaking items inside the machine like I've read about. I'm curious if anyone knows if I'll have to keep replacing the power supply every 5 or 6 months?? Could there be something else wrong? Thanks a ton.
RG

Did you replace the power supply yourself, or did you do it under Apple's Repair extension programs? You may still be eligible for free repairs if your serial number is correct.
In addition to a power supply problem, you could have dried thermal paste or a bad connection which would cause the same symptoms.

  • Satellite L100 power supply keeps failing

    Hi all,
I have an L100. A few weeks ago, the main power supply (the transformer brick) failed, so I replaced it (with a genuine Toshiba part).
Now the same thing has happened, 2 weeks later.
    What could be causing this?
    Thanks
    Richard

    Hi
    You mean the AC adaptor?
Its not easy to say maybe its a simple bad luck.
I bought my first notebook 9 years ago. After 6 month if usage the AC adaptor was faulty and I had to replace it
But since 8 years its working fine
PS: If the AC adaptor is only 2 weeks old then the warranty should be valid
Contact the dealer and ask for a replacement.
    Cheers

  • I keep getting an alarm on my xserve telling me power supply has failed

Raid admin shows an event that power supply 2 has failed and the audible alarm goes off on the server but the the components section in raid admin shows all ok.
also the power supplys both seem to be running ok when I look at them visually.
is this a bug or should I replace the power supply?

Can you clarify what Mac and Mac OS you really have? Facetime was introduced in 2010, four years after PowerMacs were discontinued. And "iOS" is not an computer OS.
Doing "About this Mac" will show your processor type and OSX version. That should help us figure out if you need to be moved to a different forum.

  • IMac G5 ... power supply trouble.

Does anyone know if the replacement power supplies they put in when one dies are any better than the original ones ? Are they improved, had some specific component failure fixed, underdesign upgraded, or something like that ?
The reason I ask is my iMac died two weeks ago and I'm waiting on parts, a power supply in particular. Luckily, I'm a " covered " rev A , and I have a year of apple care left, so they are fixing it.
This current repair will include a second logic board replacement. The original one had the bad cap issue and was replaced last summer.
I keep writing more then deleting it. I gotta stay positive.
    iMacG5 rev A   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Here's an update on the repair. I've calmed down a bit at this point and am sort of chuckling over it.
Was an onsite, the guy called, all the parts are in, he's headed my way. Great !
Came, put in a new logic board, a new power supply ( it was visibly different internally from the original ) and a new modem thing.
Put it all back together, fired it up.... bluish screen. Hum....that's not right. Rebooted... confirmed no start up chime, and still a strong blueish tent to the screen. Then after a few tens of seconds... the video goes REALLY BAD. I can't describe this, it's flashing certain colors bright then off, then ok.... then a bunch of static like effects but only pixels of certain colors or intensity affects. I say... geez.. that's bad, shut it down.
Catch our breath and regroup. The tech thinks reseat the LCD connectors. Ok, he takes it back apart and does that. Reboot.... startup screen is bluish... blueish apple in the center... no ding.
He calls apple. They tell him some hold this key stuff and that wait for three dings.... Does that. Still blueish tint.... after a few seconds pixels are flashing ....colors changing.... really scarry. There's an image, got a desktop, the colors are just flashing around and changing. For example, the blues in the desktop pic might suddenly go yellow for a second, then dim out, then back ... then blue again. Not pretty at all.
Apple on the phone thinks the inverter. Duh... this isn't the backlight flashing, it's the video memory going nuts, but hey, I'm just a customer, so I shut up.
So where am I now ?
They are sending.... another replacement logic board, another power supply, an inverter this time, and now another LCD.
I'm freeked out at that. I say, what's left ..... why not add a new case and just send me a working iMac. All I'll still have is the Hdrive and the flakey cd left in the original case.
I called applecare after the guy left and vented about 20 minutes. Better talk to them than dump this on my wife tonight.
Bad thing is now I don't have working iMac at all. Before it would work in an emergency... I could have at least gotten the info off its drive if i had to. Now, it's dead. I've no way to salvage the drive stuff. I didn't think it would get this bad, so there are still a few things on the drive.
I told the apple care lady i REALLY dont want the LCD replaced. I spent two years keeping people from poking this one. I've never washed it with alcohol to get smudges of.... it doesn't have any bad pixels. So I definitely don't want a replacement screen pulled from some failed grade school imac.
Does that sound unreasonable ? Not to me.
If the next logic board fixes it ok. Or maybe the ps is flakey.
But if this episode fried the screen, I'm just past happy.
So much for my queston about the quality of repair parts. I actually want it to be the logic board, and get me going again
Oh, yeah, am I having fun yet ?

  • IMac G5 bluetooth + airport + power supply problems - oh and the dvd drive

Yeah, seems like a lot is going wrong with my mac lately. I bought the iMac G5(no isight) model last year around july. I had some power issues (i.e. leaving the house with it turned on to come home and find it off) For the last year though that was all that was wrong. Once I had to reinstall OS X because it would not find the OS X harddrive during one of these power losses, but that was it.
Then about two weeks ago, I came home to a turned off iMac. I thought the power had gone out in my apartment, but the clocks were all right, and to my surprise the iMac would not turned on. Because I am not under warranty I searched online and found an extended exchange program for my emc model. (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/powersupply/repairextension/) I made an appt at the apple store and they replaced the power supply.
I got the machine back two nights ago and my bluetooth hardware wasn't recognized. And I now had a new "ink" system preference panel in the hardware section which aparently is some sort of handwriting recognition tablet. It ticked me off, but I just wanted to use my computer.
Well today I came home from work and my computer was acting funny. Everywhere I clicked brought up dashboard. This had never happened before and I had no choice but to force a shutdown. Powered it back up and poof, there goes my airport card. No hardware recognized. Now I have a 25 ft cable running the floor of my apartment. This was cause enough to call apple. I was told to make another apointment to bring the computer in. The guy made it sound like it was no big deal to lug a 30 lb bulky computer 40 miles and through a crowded mall. He also made no promises that the repairs would be covered under the exchange program.
I just wanted to hear any suggestions before I decide whether or not its worth it to bring in the computer. Nothing shows up in system profiler under bluetooth or airport. Should I just lie to the "genius" and tell them that my computer still shuts down randomly? I think that way they would at least replace the logic board (which I think is the problem) before telling me to sell my kidney and pay for repairs. I've tried reseting the SMU, and I looked at the bluetooth and airport cards to see if they had been accidently disconnected during the PS replacement. They are actually screwed into the logic board so I think their connections are efficient.
Oh and about the DVD drive. I have to use two cd's in order to burn a single disc. The first disc I put in the drive NEVER works. It spins for about 30 seconds then starts buzzing like blender and spits the cd back out. The second blank disc I put in USUALLY works, but sometimes it takes three discs. This problem has always been there since day 1, but I don't burn enough cd's for it to be an issue.
Thank you for listening to my gripes. I really don't think I'll make the mistake of buying the first issue of a model.

OK, first thing -to restore your bluetooth, shut down, unplug for a few minutes and then reboot. Thay usually brings the BT back. You should also repair permissions. Reset your SMU nd your PRAM as well.
Try those four things and please post back,

  • 1st gen. iMac G5 power supply failure

    Hi, all!
My 20" iMac G5 here at work collapsed and died on me about a week ago. The computer just deactivated abruptly; I actually had thought that I had kicked the plug or stepped on the power bar by mistake. I restarted it, and it worked for twenty minutes before dying again. Now it's entirely unresponsive. Having read up on the matter here and in the Mac support pages, I'm quite sure the power supply has failed. I'm in the process of finding out whether the computer is still covered under Apple's Repair Extension Program. (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/ - I know the iMac model is correct, my serial number matches the range, I'm just not sure if the computer is less than three years old.)
Anyway, the important thing for me is the hard drive, not the machine itself. We're entirely Mac-based here at work, so there is no shortage of machines for me to work on (I've already replaced my old machine with a much newer Intel-based iMac), but I would very much like to retrieve my data from my old hard disk. I've downloaded the DIY guide for opening the 20" iMac G5 and removing the hard drive, but I need some advice on the best plan of action. Should I then open another, working G5, remove its hard drive, insert my old hard drive and transfer my files off to my new iMac through our company server? Or is there another way to approach it? Is the hard drive on my 20" first gen G5 compatible with newer mac models, or am I going to run into problems with connectors, physical disk size, etc.? Or, should I just leave well enough alone and leave the entire operation to a Mac Genius?
This will be my first time opening an iMac. I believe that I can open the machines and remove-replace the hard drives without voiding any warranties, correct?
Thanks so much in advance for your help and advice!
    Adam

I am on the phone right now with a product specialist about my iMac G5 power supply issues. Kind of ***** because he has, in so many words, said that the Genius is the Alpha and Omega and can extend the 3 year coverage. For me that is great except that the Apple store is over an hour away. I don't understand why the dude on the phone can't pull the switch and make it happen as well.
    Factor in:
Unplugging iMac G5 and all peripherals
    Loading it in the car
    Driving an hour
Carrying it into the Mall (apple store)
    Waiting for my Genius appointment
More than likely getting it fixed for free (from the sounds of things)
Driving back after it is fixed
    Doing everything listed in reverse.
Would it just be easier to pay the $108 for a new power supply, wait a few days, undo some screws, and BAM! it works again?
Update. Off the phone now. The product specialist flexed his muscles, back handed the Genius to gain authority, and basically stated that they WILL DEFINITELY repair either the power supply or the logic board or both if needed. I have already had them replace the logic board once. BUT, I still have to load it up and take it to the Apple Store. Boo.

  • IMacs G3 power supply compatiblity question

I have an original Bondi blue iMac G3. Power supply works OK.
I have a flower power iMac G3 but the power supply is defunct.
Can I swop the Bondi 's iMac power supply to the flower power iMac?
    Thanks.

Unfortunately the answer is no. I just checked Mactracker & the Bondi Blue iMac uses a 80 watt power supply. The Flower Power iMac uses a 150 watt power supply. So if you tried to use the Bondi Blue iMac's power supply it probably wouldn't provide enough wattage for the iMac to work properly. I would recommend looking on eBay for a replacement power supply. Some vendors might have one or more in stock.

  • I need help to replace my power supply for the hp pavilion elite m9510f

This computer has given me many problems since I bought it in '09. From graphic card fan issues, a hard drive crash, and now the power supply has failed.
I did the blow dryer trick but it still ends up breaking a week later. I want to know what new power supply should I buy. One that will be able to fit in the hp pavilion elite m9510f and is an upgrade to the 350w that it has. Maybe somthing under 60-70 dollars if possible. Thanks for any help.

It appears to be a normal case and motherboard.  A normal ATX supply should work: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=50001333&IsNodeId=1&Description=Computer...
Just an example of what is availble, but most any should work as long the physical dimensions match the one installed now.

  • Hp p6000 desktop not starting power supply...?

I have a solid green light on the power supply but the fan does not come on.  (nothing but the green light comes on) The start up button flickers briefly when pressed but only after being unplugged and only once until it is unplugged again. I  have gone though the hp trouble shooting page.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As you did not define the model number (just a reference to the HP p6000 series) I had to guess it was the stock 300W used in several of the models.
It the green light is 'on' with applied voltage, but goes out when the computers power switch is depressed, that usually means the power supply has failed. Open the case, and repeat the sequence, noting the PSU light, motherboard LED, and watch the CPU fan. Now, press the computer power switch. Did the CPU fan turn briefly? If the CPU fan quit, and the motherboard LED is now off, I again would suspect the PSU.

  • Cisco Power Supply error

What does out of regulation limits means ?
1 red "OUTPUT FAIL," normally is off but illuminates when power supply outputs are out of regulation limits
    Thanks
    Rosa

    Hi,
    Seet this:
    LED
    Meaning
    INPUT OK
    AC-input power supplies:
•Green—Source AC voltage is OK. (Input voltage is 85 VAC or greater.)
•Off—Source AC voltage falls below 70 VAC, is not present, or the PEM is turned off.
    DC-input power supplies:
•Green—Source DC voltage is OK. (-40.5 VDC or greater.)
•Off—Source DC voltage falls below -33 VDC or is not present at the PEM.
    FAN OK
Green—Power supply fan is operating properly.
Off—Power supply fan failure is detected.
    OUTPUT FAIL
Red—Problem with one or more of the DC-output voltages of the power supply is detected.
    Off—DC-output voltages within acceptable margins.
Note For proper operation of the OUTPUT FAIL LED, systems with single power supplies must be configured with a minimum of one fan tray and one supervisor engine. Systems with dual power supplies must have a minimum configuration of one fan tray, one supervisor engine, and one additional module. Failure to meet these minimum configuration requirements can cause a false power supply output fail signal.
This is for 6500 switches but apply to almost all models.

  • 3000 Q desktop power supply replacement

    Hi,
My parents' 7 year old 3000 Q series desktop is arbitrarily switching off. When they took the desktop to a local lenovo store (in Bangalore, India) the guy at the shop indicated that the smps/power supply was failing. He cleaned it up and managed to get the computer running but warned that it might fail again in the future. Of course the computer is so old and (with a non-standard cabinet size) that getting a replacement is not easy.
For a variety of reasons just buying my folks a new computer is not easiest solution here. Could anybody here let me know what the fru number for power supply  might be and how difficult it would be to buy a replacement online ? Am I asking the impossible ?

  • Mac Pro power supply replacement?

We're on our yacht in Hobart, Tasmania. No access to Apple Store.
Re: Mac Pro 2006, how do I assess whether the power supply is failing?
I ask because we have experienced several times over the past couple of years the following issue. Typically in the morning I see the Mac Pro has shut down and will not startup. I go through the SMC reset procedure as per Article: HT1806. The straight forward "press the SMC Reset button" never works. Sometimes just pulling the power cord for a few minutes works. Yesterday was one of the "hard cases". None of the usual voodoo worked, so I left the Mac Pro for about 6 hours with power and all cables disconnected.
When I reconnected power the MP began a familiar 17 second cycle, both sets of Memory Riser Card Diagnostic LEDs illuminate for about 3 seconds, fans start, shutdown (repeat).
Pressing down the SMC RST button stops this loop, but still cannot startup.
Yesterday I pulled the top memory riser, left MP off for 30 minutes then when I reconnected power I could startup successfully. Shutdown, reinsert top rise, restart success.
I called Apple support, authorized a case. The tech went off to consult for 10 minutes or so, then came back and said "we think your power supply is probably stuffed".
To obtain a replacement supply here in Hobart is going to be difficult and expensive. So any advice on how to improve our assessment of the true source of this problem would be much appreciated.
The famous and helpful "Hatter" once suggested to another troubled Mac Pro owner to "leave the computer disconnected from power overnight". My experience is that the longer time disconnected is related to success, but I do not understand why. Why is overnight helpful?
PS - I've not done the following procedure yet, and because it is from the 2008 Mac Pro service manual it may not apply to the 2006 exactly as written. I'm including this info for the benefit of searchers who come along in the future:
    Power Supply Verification
To power on, the computer’s logic board requires “trickle” power. If the system fails to power on, first reset the SMC as described in this chapter. If the computer still doesn’t power on, follow the procedure outlined below to determine whether the issue is related to the power supply.
    Verify trickle power
Diagnostic LED 2 indicates the presence of trickle power required by the logic board to begin the startup process.
LED 2 should be yellow when the DIAG_ LED button is pressed, indicating that trickle voltage is present.
Verify Power Supply Is Providing Power
Diagnostic LED 8 indicates that the main power is OK and within regulation. Plug in AC power cord, and press the power-on button on the front panel.
LED 8 should be green when the DIAG_ LED button is pressed, indicating that the main power is OK and within regulation.
If diagnostic LED 5 and LED 6 are both solidly illuminated at power up, improperly seated power supply cables could be one cause of this behavior. Check all power supply cable connections to ensure they are properly seated.
PSS - I have recently replaced the PRAM battery.

    Are you getting a chime?
The chime says the computer passed the first part of the Power-On Self-Test, and if enough working RAM and a boot drive can be found, booting is likely. Lack of a chime says something else is amiss.
The usual procedure in cases of no chime is to pretend that something is loading down the power supply. So you remove all the drives and the graphics card and everything except a minimum of RAM, and look for the chime. If you get to the chime, then you add back the graphics card so you can see what is happening, and boot to the Installer DVD. then bring back an item at a time and see when it craps out.
