IMac G5 (no iSight) random yet continuous reboots
Hello,
I've purchased in 2005 the new iMac G5 through the Apple Store.
At first everything was doing great. I was using it only for my personal usage, since I had been given a PC laptop for work.
I started using it less & less (no time, too much work) until about a couple of years ago.
But, since then, I've noticed it has a wierd behavior: it keeps rebooting (sometimes during startup, sometimes just after the desktop appears, sometimes 5 to 20mn later - there's no rule).
It just seems to reboot less often once it is warmed up...
It might be linked to the repair extension campaing that Apple set up but also closed in 2008.
I am surprised I have never been warned nor contacted by Apple despite purchasing the iMac directly from them and, furthermore, along with an AppleCare 3 years contract...
Could someone let me know if:
1) this problem could be linked to this known problem (so far, I've read that the main consequence of the power supply problem was that the iMac wouldn't start up at all);
2) if there's a way I could still get the iMac repaired through this repair program although it is now closed
TIA,
Manu
Hi Manu - I'm afraid the repair program ended years ago.
Try resetting the SMU:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
4. Release the power button.
5. Attach the computers power cable.
6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Then open the back of the Mac and check the caps (little soda cans) to see if they are leaking or if their tops are not perfectly flat.
Let us know how you make out,
Miriam

Random and Continues Rebooting
Hello, I've had a BB 8220 for 6 months but for the last 2 o 3 weeks it reboot several times during the day sometimes in cycles that last for several hours. When it started it had the original OS and no 3d party applications. So far I've tried the following without results:
1) Use another battery
2) wipe the OS and instal the updated version
3) taking out the media card and even the SIM card
4) Checking the memory (is ok, the hidden log was wiped too)
Please let me know if there is anything else I could try or I should just give up and get another phone even when I have no warranty =( .
Thank youIf your device is under warranty consider the device replacement.
There is something wrong with the device.
If device is not under warranty take it to service center for diagnostics. -
My MacBook Pro Core Duo from 2006 shuts down randomly requiring frequent reboots to the point I had to abandon doing any project or anything on this MacBook Pro. Same thing occurs with the iMac dual core from 2007. MacBook battery replaced. Is it internal battery for both, new logic board required, bad hard drive, or bad RAM?
Help.Run an Apple Hardware Test using the original installation disk that has the AHT instructions on it.
Try SMC and PRAM resets:

It is possible that you may need a new PRAM battery.

IMac G5 17" iSight display problem
Hi - I have an iMac G5 17" iSight. Specs are 1.5 Ghz G5, 2.5 GB RAM, 150 GB Hard Drive and SuperDrive. The Hard Drive is wiped clean, I boot it with an external FW drive running 10.5.7.
Here are the issues: As soon as the machine boots, the LCD shows 3 permanent vertical lines on the screen. This is as soon as it displays anything, from the initial Apple logo all the way until shutdown. While it is on and booted up to the desktop, it runs fine, except sometimes it will randomly refresh the screen or change resolutions. These are the only issues.
While I am quite sure it is one of three things (inverter, video cable or LCD), I still took the typical troubleshooting approach and tried any quick fixes I could. These included-
1. Boot off of known good OS
2. PRAM Reset
3. SMU Reset
4. Reseat RAM
All of these had no effect. From there I tried two more things-
1. External display via mini VGA
2. Ran Apple Hardware Test
3. Ran LCD tester
The external display worked perfectly, which tells me that it isn't the GPU/logic board. I ran AHT and the logic board passed both quick and extended tests. During the extended test I got an error for the ATA bus/drive, but I haven't looked up the error code yet. Everything passed in the quick test. I used the LCD tester, which puts solid colors on the screen (Red, Green, Blue, White, Black). The 3 lines run across the whole screen vertically, and cannot be seen on a solid white screen. On the solid black screen they show up yellow and purple.
Here is a screen shot showing the three vertical lines-
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/thisismymind/untitled.jpg
I was wondering if there is an easy way to diagnose this just by looking at it. I was figuring replacing the inverter and/or the video ribbon cable first before replacing the LCD... but if anyone here can diagnose it easily than that may save some time.
Thanks in advance!MyrkridianRhapsody wrote:

Random lock ups/ reboots on iPad 4 on IOS7
Just started noticing random lookups and reboots when using safari for extended period of time. My ipad 4 didn't do that before upgrading to ios 7. Any advice besides hard reset or resetting settings? I really don't want to try a " setup as new device" reinstall of ios 7
I've been having the same issue, mine only occurs after switching applications and or taking a screenshot. I went to an apple Genius Bar and they said that for 99$ you can get a whole new iPad. I'm cheap so I haven't done it yet but this is REALLY annoying!

IMac G5 (no isight) power supply keeps failing
I had some trouble with my iMac G5 (no iSight) about 5 months ago with the power supply. I replaced the power supply, worked great for 5 months and now it's doing the same thing (turning off suddenly, trouble rebooting). I've done all the resetting of PRAM, NVRAM and SMU. Wouldn't start at all (white light would just flash) until I reset the SMU again. Didn't see any leaking items inside the machine like I've read about. I'm curious if anyone knows if I'll have to keep replacing the power supply every 5 or 6 months?? Could there be something else wrong? Thanks a ton.
RGDid you replace the power supply yourself, or did you do it under Apple's Repair extension programs? You may still be eligible for free repairs if your serial number is correct.
In addition to a power supply problem, you could have dried thermal paste or a bad connection which would cause the same symptoms. -
Imac G5 (pre isight). Mass Storage Error
I have an imac G5 (pre-isight). Using Tiger. Recently it has been playing up. Two main problems: starting up and waking after sleep mode.
*Starting up issues*
There doesnt seem to be a consistent problem here. Sometimes it hangs on the grey apple screen, sometimes grey probitory sign screen. Sometimes it hangs on a black screen with white writing. On about the 10th to 20th time of rebooting, it seems to startup and work fine.
*Sleep issues*
If I leave the computer to go into sleep mode, it tends to freeze in whatever application is open. Especially Safari.
I have tried numerous fixes. I've reset PRAM, done the SMU thing. Repaired and verified disk many times. Repaired and verified permissions. I've archived and installed and archived and erased. There's barely any software on here apart from the operating software and MS Office (legal). I'm using an apple keyboard (wired) and a wired mouse. There's no important info on here so am happy to wipe everything.
Finally i did a hardware test and received a "mass storage error" (only appeared for the extended test)...
2STF/8/3: S-ATA Bus 0 –Master
Having looked up several forums i replaced the hard drive. (Made sure it was compatible, similar size and same specs as original). Reinstalled software and got all the latest updates. Seemed to be working quite well for a day or so, although there was a few 'permissions' error which seemed easily fixed.
Today i awoke the imac and it had frozen. Back to it's old tricks. Tried restarting and got grey screens, black screens etc. Repaired permissions. Ran another hardware test and getting the same error message about mass storage!
So if it's not the hard drive, what's wrong for my imac? Is it time to just dispose it?
Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have. The recall ended many moons ago, and it's a capacitor problem, they all need replacing, those in the power supply as well, probably.
If you are handy with a soldering gun, have steady hands and are good at repairing electronics, you can do it yourself. Look at [welovemacs.com] or [synaptech.com] for parts and advice. -
IMac G5 w/iSight freezes up with distorted screen
I have a 20in iMac G5 with iSight and it isn't even six months old yet. At least once a night the screen turns goofy, not really pixilated but kind of crosshatched. (usually from the bottom - up) The mouse still moves but nothing is clickable and I can't get to my dock. Force quit doesn't work and I am forced to restart. I thought I had it narrowed down to two applications that caused it, but last night it froze up while re installing software and listening to iTunes.
As you can tell from my name I am a convert from a pc. I work on both a mac and pc for work and I haven’t had a problem with the Powerbook at all. I love it. I wish I could say the same about my own machine. Currently, I find the new commercials ridiculous with the pc constantly freezing up and the mac is fine. My pc didn't freeze up half this much. I am frustrated because I just lost my recent work for my final project for Grad school and I could have thrown this thing out the window last night. Can someone please help with my frustrations.
The ConvertNo it was an "Recognized by Apple Computer, Inc. as an Apple authorized reseller with demonstrated expertise in providing consultation and service for Apple computers." That quote was taken right from their site.
I thought the same thing as you. There was no way it was a font but I am relatively new to troubleshooting on a Mac so I didn't argue.
This is the place where I brought it and I don't ever recommend anyone else go there - http://www.macpros.biz/
Have any other ideas? I am stumped. I don't really want to take it back there when
1. I know just as much as they do.
2. They charged me $63 to tell me they couldnt find a problem. How much are they gonna charge me to keep looking? -
IMAC Powers Down by itself, When it reboots only the Spot Light visable
Hi,
Hope someone can help, we have two Imac 20' G5 2ghz with 1.5gb Ram. Both system are crashing with the same problem.
The IMAC Powers Down by itself, and when it reboots only the Spot Light Field is viable, Only way to recover it is to rebuild OS. Sent the System back, and Both Logic board and Hardrive were replaced, and the day system crashed again did they same thing. We also have 2 Imac 20' G5 Isight Models working in the same envioroment and are not experiencing any problems with those systems. Any Ideas?Sounds to me like you may have bad power supply units. I know of several people who had Rev B machines that were covered by THIS repair program.
Even though it says rev A machines are covered. It seems like some that were made early in the switch still used some of the components that were fingered out as not functioning properly. I would check your serial number.
Either way, give AppleCare a call, you should still be covered. And if you had some things replaced, like you said, let them know its doing same thing. Its for this reason that I have a hunch you are getting those old MBs that were having issues. Its more than the Power supply I sispect. Since you cant run it normally when it does power up, seems to me you may have several issues going wrong at the same time.
Hope you get it fixed. -
IMac shuts down at random, any ideas on cause?
My iMac (G5, no iSight)has in the last 2 weeks started to shut down at random, for example last night it shut down twice in a two hour period. It makes one click noise when it does this and all power is immediately lost. So far it always starts up straight away when the power button is pushed. I did have the power board? replaced a few years ago under Apples extended warrenty scheme and it has been fine since then. I have noticed a few other similar posts and my questions are: does this sound serious and what is causing it, could it be linked to the same issue as the warrenty scheme replacement? is there anything I can do to put right without a big bill coming my way!?
Regards,
David.Welcome to Discussions - it sounds as if your power supply unit is failing, and yes, it could be the same problem as before. Unfortunately, Apple's extended warranty expired last year, so you would have to bear the expense yourself. However, first try vacuuming all the air vents, and open the machine up and vacuum the fans. This could help, as well as resetting the SMU
1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
3. Wait 10 seconds.
4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
5. Let go of the power button.
6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.

Continual reboot and device driver missing
Hi, I have a t400 installed with both win7 and ubuntu 11.04. The system suffers from continual reboot, basically when I shutdown the machine, it automatically and forcibly get rebooted.
I have followed some instructions on the web, and there is a device driver missing, which is PCI simple communication controller. I have tried download AMT package, which does not work for me. It gets stucked in a terminal saying that I need insert TN33, which I dont have. My t400 type is 7417. Any comments are appreciated.hey tristartom,
continuous reboot occured after installing ubuntu yes ? could you remove ubuntu and have your unit on a mono-boot with windows and see if the same error occurs.
if it doesn't happen, then i suggest heading to Ubuntu forums or the Linux thread in this forum and check with other linux users if they have experience this same issue as you.

Lumia 620 randomly freezes and reboots
I knew a cheap windows phone is too good to be true. I've been getting random freezes and reboots without any reason at all. This is unacceptable, nokia should address this windows 8 issue afflicting wp 8 phones. Please don't tell be to do a soft or hard reset because we already know it won't fix the problem.
Hi, everyone. I've been having problems with random reboots ever since I bought my Lumia 620 and it was driving me crazy. It freezes up sporadically too, but I think I found a fix for rebooting issues.
When my cousin bought her Lumia 620 I immediately asked her if hers rebooted sporadically as well. She said it hadn't, not once. Then, one time her battery was dying so I gave her mine, and she left me with her battery and on charger while she went home. Anyway, hers started to reboot frequently, whilst mine was behaving ok.
When we replaced the batteries again, mine began rebooting again.
Finally, I checked both our batteries and found out mine was moving around the device more freely than hers. Hers was held firmly in place while mine danced around. Then I tried moderate, yet gentle tap on the side of my device and it rebooted EVERY TIME I tapped it. After I inserted a small, neatly folded piece of paper between the device and the battery, the battery clicked in place tightly and it couldn't move at all. Reboots stopped, no matter how strong I tapped the sides of the device.
This hasn't resolved any freezes, but at least it's not rebooting all the time. So check your battery, maybe it is a hairline thinner or smaller or whatnot from the rest of them and it can move around. A millisecond is enough for it to lose contact, half a millimeter of movement is enough to cause your phone to reboot. Hope this revelation of mine will help someone -
I have recently upgraded my iMac Intel G5 iSight (iMac5,1) to OS 10.6.8 and now the internal mic does not work with skype or facebook. I can here static when playing back clips. Do I need to update firmware or reload old system parts. I have zapped PRAM. The blue indicator in system audio panel will appear for a second as I slide the bar for internal mic but then it disappears. Is there a fix?
The sound seems very faint but can here static on playback.

Graphics problem on iMac G5 w/ iSight.
I just tried installing a 1GB RAM stick in a 17" iMac G5 (iSight). The machine has 512MB of RAM (the standard), and a 1.9Ghz processor. It is running Mac OS X 10.5.7.
My friend, who owns the iMac told me she'd been seeing some weird graphics artefacts and had been having several lock-ups on the computer which required a forced restart to fix. I didn't know what to make of this and said I'd check it out when I went to install the RAM for them.
The problem alarmed me - rather than a few stray black lines that I had been told about, I found all of the following issues.
1. Black / White or Transparent lines on windows and toolbars. These were particularly predominant on menus and other semi-transparent parts of the screen, but also occurred on solid windows - such as Safari.
2. Blank screen - the screen would just go blank after a few moments.
3. Screen freezes - everything on screen would stop other than the arrow. Sometimes this would stick as an arrow, or sometimes as a beachball.
4. A really strange phenomena when I opened a browser page and suddenly the left of the screen slowly faded to black, while the right went white. This went in increments as I watched with the image of the desktop distorted behind it, burning out.
To try to fix the problem I took the following steps:
1. Reinstalled Mac OS X 10.5.7 Combo Update. This had no effect.
2. Repaired permissions. (I didn't expect that to help anyway)
3. Tried booting into a second user account on the computer (again, all the same problems were there - even worse on the other account in fact.
4. Unplugged all peripherals (no effect)
5. Removed the 1GB memory stick I had just installed - this appeared to fix the issue and I thought that maybe this was causing it. However, after a few minutes of normal operations, the problems all came back.
Just to clarify - the problems apparently started a week or so ago (this might coincide with the owner installing Mac OS X 10.5.7, but I can't be sure), at this point the computer only had its built-in 512MB RAM. With the additional 1GB RAM that I installed, the problems seemed to be worse. I know there is nothing wrong with the RAM as I had been using it in my iMac G5 up until this point.
I initially suspected the problem was the graphics drivers - as the problem occurred after upgrading to OS X 10.5.7, though I wondered if the problem could be the GPU itself?
However, I am now wondering if it's a RAM issue as additional RAM makes the problem worse - would having more in the computer change the way that the internal RAM is being accessed and mean that the end addresses of the built-in RAM are being accessed more quickly when additional memory is installed?
I was unable to find out if the machine would work alright if booting from the Leopard or original install Tiger DVD - as I didn't have time to check these.
Please advise me what I can do to diagnose the problem further, or what the owner can do to fix the problem."I will have to dig out my copy of Leopard or the original installer for my iMac G5 (w/iSight) as the owner doesn't know where her copies have gone! Maybe trying these will help find a solution"
You cannot use the System DVD/CDs from one Mac to another. The System discs are _+machine specific.+_ You may cause further damage if you use it.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -

However, you can try using a purchased retailed Leopard DVD.

Mac OS X 10.4 Help-My Dispay Doesn’t Look Right
If the above is of no help then you will need to do the following:
System Preferences>Display>Display
Check the Colors & Brightness settings.
My Color setting is set to Millions which I believe is the default setting.
Now click on the Color button.
Check Display Profile
Is Show profiles for this display only enabled or disabled?
If necessary click on the Calibrate button & do the necessary.
Now in the bottom right corner, click on the purple button w/the black ? mark in the middle. This will bring up the help window.
Midway down, click on the Colorsync Utility link.
The next window should be Profile First Aid.
Read & follow the instructions/details of About Profile First Aid: & do the necessary to Verify & Repair.
If the culprit is the video card, you will need to take the computer to the nearest AASP or Apple Store for repairs.
