IMac G5 (no iSight) - Screen flicker
Upon start up, the screen flickers and is dim. Then, within a couple minutes, screen returns to normal brightness. At times, I can remedy this by decreasing the brightness under 'displays' under 'system preferences' then turning it up to the highest brightness setting. Other times, it fixes itself. Originally, I took this to someone in the area who provides service (not a apple store, the closest is in syracuse) who said the problem was not under warranty and supposedly 'fixed it'. Apparently he did not.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Chuck
Take the comp back to the repair shop & tell them they did not "fix" the problem. Only this time..........
When it’s time to pick up your computer from the repair shop:
* Before you leave the repair shop, make sure you have the repair tech(s) power the comp up and demonstrate that it is indeed working & repaired properly to your satisfaction.*

IMac early 2008 occasional screen flicker with external monitor
I am experiencing flickering with my early 2008 iMac when driving an external monitor. My Thinkpad is flawless when pushing out to the monitor.
It will be fine, but occassionaly (every 5-20seconds) the screen gives a little flicker, about 1/4 of a second in duration.
Also, sometimes, there is no flickering, it depends on what is being displayed, which makes me think video card. I am using the 2400XT and my software is up to date.
ROM Revision: 113-B2250H-259
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.259
I am thinking about trying to source a 2600pro that came on the more high end version of my iMac and swap out the graphics card. I also want to drop a 2TB hdd in it, so I figure I might as well kill 2 birds with one stone, or kill 1 iMac with 2 simutaneous upgrades if I am unlucky! (o_O)iMacs are not designed to have the graphics cards upgraded. If your old card is bad and you feel competent to exchange it for the same one that's really your only GPU option. Apple never said the iMac GPU's were upgradeable and frankly I've never heard of anyone successfully upgrading an iMac GPU.
As far as the adaptor well you could bring your system into an Apple Store and have it checked out by a Genius, it's a free service. I don't know how to make a reservation in Japan but I'm sure you can from the Japanese Apple site. The link in the US is:
http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
I'm providing that so you can look for something equivalent. -
Imac 21" core i5 screen flicker
I've seen this problem on the 27" models. I purchased a refurbished model from Apple along with apple care just a few weeks ago. The screen will flicker just once and only a few times a day. I thought it was my eyes, but it is really the screen.
I have not found a resolution on the forums and just wanted to know if anyone had this issue and resolved this issue. If this is something that needs more than a software/firmware fix I'll proceed to contacting someone at apple care.
Thanks,
arnolfo
iMac 21" Core i5 (late 2011 model)
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
16 GB 1333 MHz DDR
2.7 Ghz Intel Core i5Yes, I had forgot the ease of the support with A-Care. The phone support person had me shut down and unplug for 15 seconds. Plug back in and wait 5 seconds. Start up. Time will tell if the flicker persists, but according to the support person, this fixes the flicker.

IMac 27" inch display screen flicker issue when moving files
Whenever a drop a file from Finder to my desktop, the screen flickers. Occasionally, when I move a window, it also flickers, but it's a more consistent problem when dropping the files on the desktop. It only flickers once and returns to a completely normal state.
It does NOT happen when going the other way - from the desktop to Finder.
I purchased the iMac AFTER the original firmware updates, so I haven't had to install any of them from the original problem a couple years ago.
I am wondering if this is a problem that is discussed or if there are any suggestions.
Thanks....I'm having the same problem. Here are the details I was about to post as a separate thread:
27" iMac 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 with 16Gb RAM. I'm also using a 20" ACD alongside, a set up I have used with my previous 24" iMac. The ACD is being used as an extended desktop (not mirrored).
I've just started noticing an odd effect: When moving a file from a folder onto the desktop, the entire iMac screen flickers and breaks up momentarily before reverting to normal. It is an effect which lasts a fraction of a second and is visually very intrusive.
Weirdly, if I move the file but continue to hold it for a second before releasing to place it on the desktop, there is no flicker.
Similarly, if I open another folder and place the window alongside, moving a file from window to window produces no flicker. It only happens when moving something to the desktop.
The effect does not happen if the ACD is turned off (but connected) or the ACD is used in Mirror mode.
Does this sound like a hardware or software fault? -
IMac keeps crashing (see logs); occasional screen flicker
Hi,
I have a 21.5" iMac (2009) 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I have recently upgraded my RAM from 4GB to 12GB, and also upgraded only recently to OS X Mountain Lion. I noticed that system stability has deteriorated since these upgrades, with increasingly frequent crashes.
In particular, my screen flickered before my system crashed last night; visually, I'd say the bottom half of the screen was blacked out during the flickering. My system was not able to boot up after that, so I did a restore from Time Machine. I managed to restore my system but my computer has just crashed again. (Unfortunately, I was not present and therefore couldn't tell if the screen was flickering again... but at least the system booted up after that.)
I am pasting my System Diagnostic Reports below, hoping that someone can make sense of them:

My new iMac 27" seems to have a slight screen flicker at low light settings. If I adjust the brightness higher it goes away, but comes back when dimmed to the previous low level. There is no banding or stripes on the screen, it seems like the backlight is flickering.
Apple has stated that their Mountain Lion version of OS X and its Bootcamp are NOT compatible with "Windows 8" versions yet. That is the source of your problem.

IMac G5 w/iSight freezes up with distorted screen
I have a 20in iMac G5 with iSight and it isn't even six months old yet. At least once a night the screen turns goofy, not really pixilated but kind of crosshatched. (usually from the bottom - up) The mouse still moves but nothing is clickable and I can't get to my dock. Force quit doesn't work and I am forced to restart. I thought I had it narrowed down to two applications that caused it, but last night it froze up while re installing software and listening to iTunes.
As you can tell from my name I am a convert from a pc. I work on both a mac and pc for work and I haven’t had a problem with the Powerbook at all. I love it. I wish I could say the same about my own machine. Currently, I find the new commercials ridiculous with the pc constantly freezing up and the mac is fine. My pc didn't freeze up half this much. I am frustrated because I just lost my recent work for my final project for Grad school and I could have thrown this thing out the window last night. Can someone please help with my frustrations.
The ConvertNo it was an "Recognized by Apple Computer, Inc. as an Apple authorized reseller with demonstrated expertise in providing consultation and service for Apple computers." That quote was taken right from their site.
I thought the same thing as you. There was no way it was a font but I am relatively new to troubleshooting on a Mac so I didn't argue.
This is the place where I brought it and I don't ever recommend anyone else go there - http://www.macpros.biz/
Have any other ideas? I am stumped. I don't really want to take it back there when
1. I know just as much as they do.
2. They charged me $63 to tell me they couldnt find a problem. How much are they gonna charge me to keep looking? -
Screen Problems with iMac G5 20" (iSight)
Hello!
I had the same problem with my iMac G5 20" (iSight) as described by Bob North Apr. 18, 2006 at http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/imacg5/topic2276.html#apr25:
"""" I repair Apple products, and recently I've seen strange and erratic display problems with the G5 flat-panel (iSight) 17" and 20"...and I am very curious about the origin. The picture will display what I will call "plaid pixles". Upon boot, the dispaly appears normal, but within 5-10 minutes, either at desktop or in ASD, the normal display will "crash" to the "plaid" display. The desktop, or whatever, can still be distinguished in the background, but it is overwashed by the plaid patterns -- which do change slightly, and also cover the full space of the screen. I've seen different scenarios, 3 in 2 weeks, where the symptom is exhibited with no particular failure pattern -- both before and after repair. I've replaced the main logic on one occasion, with no fix...but the 2nd try replaced both display panel and inverter. The display issue was fixed, but the system exhibited lockups only when it reached the destop. Another repair the same issue was seen after replacing the 20" main logic, where the symptom was not present previous. Personal opinion of the late 2005 IMAC flat-panels, in the hardware sense, is the likelihood of component manufacture issues, possibly the main logic boards or the panel displays themselves. Repair of this model, as opposed to the earlier, non-iSight flat-panel 17 and 20" models are extremely difficult -- access to main componenets is blocked by the display panel, which must be removed for each troubleshooting attempt. The internal hardware design is not oriented for repair ease...they are by far the most difficult to work on.
Any input regarding the display issues? Thanks.""""
I can't use the mouse or anything else, and after a while the fans start to go on max. This is the second time I encounter this problem within 30 days. What I have noticed is that the day before, the brightness of the screen started to "blink" slightly -- like if the screen tried to adjust itself.
But I haven't experienced what Bob North describes as the: "Upon boot, the dispaly appears normal, but within 5-10 minutes, either at desktop or in ASD, the normal display will "crash" to the "plaid" display".
I just restart with the power button and everything is working OK. I made an Extended Hardware test without any problems detected.
I have been looking for this issue with iMac G5 20" (iSight) and only found it at http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/imacg5/topic2276.html#apr25 :

Thanks.

bob north describes: "...recently I've seen strange and erratic display problems with the G5 flat-panel (iSight) 17" and 20"...and I am very curious about the origin. The picture will display what I will call "plaid pixles". Upon boot, the dispaly appears normal, but within 5-10 minutes, either at desktop or in ASD, the normal display will "crash" to the "plaid" display. The desktop, or whatever, can still be distinguished in the background, but it is overwashed by the plaid patterns -- which do change slightly, and also cover the full space of the screen."
Does it look anything like this?

My nearly 3 year old Titanium PowerBook G4 just did this one day, out of the blue. The problem went away after a few minutes, but I had already taken photos. Thanks to those photos, Apple gave the powerbook a new logic board.
(This PowerBook has had its logic board replaced twice, a new optical drive, and a cracked case edge replaced. AppleCare has more than paid for itself. Despite the occasional problems, I remain very happy with this machine. I'm sure I'd be much less happy if I had not bought AppleCare!)

HELP?!? - iMac 2011 i7 Screen Flicker issue (OSX 10.8.3)
I have a Mid 2011 27" iMac with i7
Since the latest OSX update (OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)) I am getting a very concerning issue where my secondary monitors and my iMac screen 'flicker' and show horizontal bars (green in colour) the audio then seems to stutter and crash before eventually the computer freezes and I have to hold the power button to shut down.
This happens once or twice a day, however a related issue that happens every few minutes is that just my secondary monitors flicker white in places and go completely black for a few seconds at times too.
I have run the Apple Hardware Test and it reported no issues, I also reinstalled OSX from recovery and it is still happening.
I am hoping (praying) this is an issue with OSX and not my hardware. Can anyone shed any light on this - I'm seeing reports of 'similar' sorts of issues with the latest OSX update. But nothing like the issue I mentioned first (the one that forces me to shut down)
I have a Time Machine backup, is it possible to use Time Machine to revert my OSX to 10.8.2 to see if it is indeed the OS that has the issue?
Thanks for any help you can give!!!
JayHi, I'd try the 10.8.2 restore.
I never use it, I use cloning myself, but...

Screen flicker on iMac 21.5" (2011, Lion Pre-installed)
My iMac has been purchased a month ago, and probably the first batch in Singapore to be pre-installed with Lion.
I have been experiencing screen flicker since the first week. It's a slight flicker that happens randomly for duration of less than a second, and occurs approximitely three times in an hour. I have slight yellow tinge on my screen, but it's negligible, and I'm not concerned.
During the flicker, the screen does not go completely blank like what many 27" users are experiencing, the flicker resembles the flicker of a candle light.
Is anyone experiencing the same problem? Will a future software update fix this issue?
Although chances are slim, I'm hoping Apple can replace a new set for me. I'm very concern that if they are just going to repair my set, it will take time and it may come back with other problems. I have called Applecare and their advice is for me to bring in to authorised service centre, unfortunately I don't feel confident that they will be able to solve the problem once and for all. Thanks for taking your time to reply!
I feel relieved knowing that it's not a hardware issue, so I'm definitely not bringing in for any repair, the technicians might just make things worse!
Anyway, something really unfortunate happened when I was trying to do a clean install of Lion. I rebooted my iMac into the Lion recovery partition and erased my hard disk without a second thought. Then went back to initiate the reinstallation procedure, only to be greeted by an error 'Could not find installation information on this machine. Please contact AppleCare.'
I contacted them and performed some basic resets, and finally did a 'zero-out' erase of my drive. And I'm still getting the same error. A search on Google reveal only a few people who had experienced the same. Hence, my iMac became completely useless overnight.
It's a shame AppleCare doesn't operate round the clock, I tend to work long hours and could not find an appropriate time to talk to them. I would like to make a request for them to mail me a copy of Lion in any media, so I can install Lion back onto my iMac. Maybe they don't offer anything that sort, but I'm still going to try! This problem is annoying.
I'm glad you can revert back to Snow Leopard, Lion has it's attractions, but problems outweigh its features. -
Graphics problem on iMac G5 w/ iSight.
I just tried installing a 1GB RAM stick in a 17" iMac G5 (iSight). The machine has 512MB of RAM (the standard), and a 1.9Ghz processor. It is running Mac OS X 10.5.7.
My friend, who owns the iMac told me she'd been seeing some weird graphics artefacts and had been having several lock-ups on the computer which required a forced restart to fix. I didn't know what to make of this and said I'd check it out when I went to install the RAM for them.
The problem alarmed me - rather than a few stray black lines that I had been told about, I found all of the following issues.
1. Black / White or Transparent lines on windows and toolbars. These were particularly predominant on menus and other semi-transparent parts of the screen, but also occurred on solid windows - such as Safari.
2. Blank screen - the screen would just go blank after a few moments.
3. Screen freezes - everything on screen would stop other than the arrow. Sometimes this would stick as an arrow, or sometimes as a beachball.
4. A really strange phenomena when I opened a browser page and suddenly the left of the screen slowly faded to black, while the right went white. This went in increments as I watched with the image of the desktop distorted behind it, burning out.
To try to fix the problem I took the following steps:
1. Reinstalled Mac OS X 10.5.7 Combo Update. This had no effect.
2. Repaired permissions. (I didn't expect that to help anyway)
3. Tried booting into a second user account on the computer (again, all the same problems were there - even worse on the other account in fact.
4. Unplugged all peripherals (no effect)
5. Removed the 1GB memory stick I had just installed - this appeared to fix the issue and I thought that maybe this was causing it. However, after a few minutes of normal operations, the problems all came back.
Just to clarify - the problems apparently started a week or so ago (this might coincide with the owner installing Mac OS X 10.5.7, but I can't be sure), at this point the computer only had its built-in 512MB RAM. With the additional 1GB RAM that I installed, the problems seemed to be worse. I know there is nothing wrong with the RAM as I had been using it in my iMac G5 up until this point.
I initially suspected the problem was the graphics drivers - as the problem occurred after upgrading to OS X 10.5.7, though I wondered if the problem could be the GPU itself?
However, I am now wondering if it's a RAM issue as additional RAM makes the problem worse - would having more in the computer change the way that the internal RAM is being accessed and mean that the end addresses of the built-in RAM are being accessed more quickly when additional memory is installed?
I was unable to find out if the machine would work alright if booting from the Leopard or original install Tiger DVD - as I didn't have time to check these.
Please advise me what I can do to diagnose the problem further, or what the owner can do to fix the problem."I will have to dig out my copy of Leopard or the original installer for my iMac G5 (w/iSight) as the owner doesn't know where her copies have gone! Maybe trying these will help find a solution"
You cannot use the System DVD/CDs from one Mac to another. The System discs are _+machine specific.+_ You may cause further damage if you use it.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -

However, you can try using a purchased retailed Leopard DVD.

Mac OS X 10.4 Help-My Dispay Doesn’t Look Right
If the above is of no help then you will need to do the following:
System Preferences>Display>Display
Check the Colors & Brightness settings.
My Color setting is set to Millions which I believe is the default setting.
Now click on the Color button.
Check Display Profile
Is Show profiles for this display only enabled or disabled?
If necessary click on the Calibrate button & do the necessary.
Now in the bottom right corner, click on the purple button w/the black ? mark in the middle. This will bring up the help window.
Midway down, click on the Colorsync Utility link.
The next window should be Profile First Aid.
Read & follow the instructions/details of About Profile First Aid: & do the necessary to Verify & Repair.
If the culprit is the video card, you will need to take the computer to the nearest AASP or Apple Store for repairs. -
My mac has developed a screen flicker. I vaguely recall this happening before but cannot remember the solution - something to do with resetting the PRAM or the NVRAM perhaps? Help the headache is getting worse!
Okay. I found a scrap of paper about resetting the SMC. It seems to have worked. I did NOT reset NVRAM or PRAM (I have no idea what these are by the way - I just trust acronyms!). The process I followed was;
1. Shut down the computer
2. Unplug the power cord
3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds
4. Release the power button
5. Attach the power lead
6. Press the power button to turn on the computer
Mine is a 2099 iMac with up to date OS X 10.8.5. I will report on this thread if and when the problem recurs. -

any ideas what do you think thanks for help.If the seller proclaimed that he/she was selling a working computer, strongly suggest that you get your money back. You don't know what could be wrong nor the real condition of the computer.
Macs are not suppose to be sold w/o the system DVDs that originally came w/the computer. You will need to obtain them from the seller. System DVDs are machine specific and cannot be used from one computer to another. You also need them for troubleshooting as one of them comes w/the Hardware Test.

CS5 AS2 mac projector screen flicker–no flicker from CS3 projector
I've been working on a flash project for a while using a G5 PowerPC, 10.4.11, Flash CS3 using AS2 and publishing a mac projector/Windows exe. Mac projector has always worked fine. So has the exe. I just upgraded to an iMac, Snow Leopard 10.6.8, AMD card and Flash CS 5.5 v11.5.0.325.
I'm using the same CS3 AS2 flash file from the old G5 CS3 setup on my new Snow Leopard Mac CS 5.5 setup. When I publish it, the mac projector flickers like crazy. It looks to be an animated png issue. But I have never had that problem on my old slow G5 - the projector always played perfect, no flicker.
On this CS5.5 generated projector, the flickering occurs on the splash - large png files, but my G3 never had one issue. Also, my small png rollovers flicker - not just the animation. And the screen flickers non stop when there's no mouse activity.
I copied over a backup of my CS3 generated projector onto my new computer and played it to see if it was a graphics card issue. No flicker! The CS3 projector plays perfect on my new Mac. All content within the two projectors are identical - What gives?
Why is CS5.5 generated projector flickering, but the exact same file from a CS3 generated projector works perfect on BOTH computers?
I've spent several hours searching for the answer but can't find a flicker issue similar to mine.
I don't have bitmap caching enabled. I didn't change any of the default settings in CS5.5. I just copied the CS3 file to my new computer and published it, then I got instant screen flicker. I don't know what other settings to change for projectors. Never had performance issues with projectors or exe files, no matter how old the computer was that was playing the file.
This must be a Flash setting issue, but I can't find it.
By the way, the cs5.5 genertated exe file plays like a champ - no issues.
Ideas?I also tried publishing the projector in flash player 9 and 10 to see if that would make a difference. It did not. I was publishing in flash player 8 on my old G5 computer and that's what I published it as through CS5.5 as well. That didn't work either. I'm search for some sort of fs command AS2 issue when using CS5.5 to see if I need to change the code, but have not found anything yet.
It's the full screen mode that is causing the flicker though - only when published from CS5.5. Full screen mode works out of a CS3 projector on both computers.

IMac G5 17" iSight display problem
Hi - I have an iMac G5 17" iSight. Specs are 1.5 Ghz G5, 2.5 GB RAM, 150 GB Hard Drive and SuperDrive. The Hard Drive is wiped clean, I boot it with an external FW drive running 10.5.7.
Here are the issues: As soon as the machine boots, the LCD shows 3 permanent vertical lines on the screen. This is as soon as it displays anything, from the initial Apple logo all the way until shutdown. While it is on and booted up to the desktop, it runs fine, except sometimes it will randomly refresh the screen or change resolutions. These are the only issues.
While I am quite sure it is one of three things (inverter, video cable or LCD), I still took the typical troubleshooting approach and tried any quick fixes I could. These included-
1. Boot off of known good OS
2. PRAM Reset
3. SMU Reset
4. Reseat RAM
All of these had no effect. From there I tried two more things-
1. External display via mini VGA
2. Ran Apple Hardware Test
3. Ran LCD tester
The external display worked perfectly, which tells me that it isn't the GPU/logic board. I ran AHT and the logic board passed both quick and extended tests. During the extended test I got an error for the ATA bus/drive, but I haven't looked up the error code yet. Everything passed in the quick test. I used the LCD tester, which puts solid colors on the screen (Red, Green, Blue, White, Black). The 3 lines run across the whole screen vertically, and cannot be seen on a solid white screen. On the solid black screen they show up yellow and purple.
Here is a screen shot showing the three vertical lines-
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/thisismymind/untitled.jpg
I was wondering if there is an easy way to diagnose this just by looking at it. I was figuring replacing the inverter and/or the video ribbon cable first before replacing the LCD... but if anyone here can diagnose it easily than that may save some time.
Thanks in advance!MyrkridianRhapsody wrote:
