IMac g5, no video output

I just replaced the logic board and power supply on my G5 imac, both of which were bad.  Now, when I power on, all three LEDs on the logic board come on, t there's no video output.  The video had been working fine before the logic board and power supply failed.
THe tech note says to try resetting the PRAM.  We have a wireless (usb) keyboard, and holding down option-apple-p-r doesn't seem to do anything.  Is there another way to reset the pram?
Any other suggestions would be welcomed.  Replacing

THanks Moke.
OK, I bought a wired keyboard and tried to reset the pram.  I think it worked -- it rebooted the computer and the chime came on again.  But there's still no video output.  Not sure if that means I should replace the screen or the video inverter or both or if it could be something else altogether.
Any ideas?

  • IMac G5 iSight - Resolution problems when using s-video output.

    Good afternoon all.
I have an iMac G5 and the only video output it has is a mini VGA socket. I have used this with a mini VGA to S-Video converter cable from Apple and am getting some odd results.
The Mac is running Leopard 1.5.7 and I'm outputting to a fairly old Panasonic CRT TV.
The problem I find is that when I plug in my mini VGA adaptor to the Mac it reduces the resolution on the Mac screen down to 1024x768 (stretched). The TV outputted TV image looks great, but I can't seem to keep my native resolution of 1440x900 on the Mac display.
If I do go and change the resolution in "displays" in the sys' prefs' then it just seems to keep the 1024x768 resolution on the Mac but this time without stretching it.
Does anyone know how I can keep my Mac at its native resolution of 1440x900 while still outputting to s-video to the TV?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you again in advance.
    Stuart

    Hi
I have the same config as you: I have been using it for years to view on my tv dvds or videos from the web.
To my knowledge there is no way to acheive what you wish: when you plug the adaptor in the mac adjust to your output source and its main display (the g5 display) will reflect that with the result that it becomes very difficult to use.
Maybe there is a way to try changing the resolution in a middlle"configuration" which would give an acceptable viewing on the tv as well as on the g5.
Personally I keep plugging and unplugging the adaptor as needed.

  • IMac 27" Video Output

I currently have an iMac 27" Intel Core 2 Duo model (November 2009) and whenever I connect to my HDTV via VGA I cannot set a resolution higher than 1600x1200 @ 60Hz.
I know the TV is capable of doing so. My MacBookPro 13" with the integrated Nvidia 9400m is capable of setting a resolution of 1920x1080 @ 60Hz.
I'm running 10.6.4 and have the ATI Radeon HD 4670. I've tried SwitchResX and whenever I attempt to create a custom resolution, I'm told the resolution may be invalid.
I'm looking for a solution so I may leave my 27" iMac connected to my HDTV on a somewhat permanent basis. Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you.

    seemein3d,
I don't know that I can answer your question, as I am currently researching video I/O capabilities for my own 27" iMac. But, I did notice something in your post that might help.
Your HDTV should have a multitude of inputs, but your trying to connect via VGA possibly because you are already using the rest for other devices?
I would suggest trying to connect using one of the digital connectors, HDMI, DVI, or even S-Video. Even the cheaper and/or smaller HDTVs usually have at least 2 HDMI inputs. If you are already using both, temporarily disconnect one of them, connect it to your iMac, and see if you can get it to display 1080.
I would love to have one of the experts weigh in on this one, as this is one of my video output questions. Thanks.

  • Is it possible to display Windows PC video output on an iMac via Thunderbolt?

Is it possible to display Window PC video output on an iMac via Thunderbolt?

Currently the ThunderBolt iMacs can only be used as an external display by other ThunderBolt Macs.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Thunderbolt/10.6/en/30822.html
When there is a Windows PC with ThunderBolt released it might work as well.
And/or when there will be ThunderBolt devices which enable this.
The Intensity Extreme http://www.blackmagic-design.com/uk/products/intensity/ might allow this once it is released.

  • S-video output B&W

    Hi,
From time to time I like to connect my PowerBook to TV thorugh S-video (using adapter S-Video to scart) to watch movies with friends etc.
Though, it has been some time (over half a yar) when I last watched a movie on TV that way. Since I know for sure that I have been able to connect my pb to tv via s-video with no problems I can't understand whats wrong now.
Here's the thing. When I connected my PB to a TV now, it shows the picture in black&white on the TV. Anyone know how to get back the colour image? I have the same cable set that I used before to connect to tv (latter is the same one also) without any problems - full colour. So, I think the problem is software-related (maybe os x update).
Can anyone recommend what to do to get the colour back?
    cheers,
    r. pello
P.S. PB's lcd screen works fine. So, problem only with s-video output colour.
    PowerBook G4 (1.67 GHz, 15")   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iMac (Summer 2000, 120GB HDD)

Have you checked the resolution/TV type in the Displays preference pane once the TV is connected? If your PB is detecting your TV as PAL rather than NTSC (or vice versa), that could certainly cause a loss of colour like you describe.

  • Full quality Video Output

Hi I wanto to use my Imac to play videos, are NTSC videos compressed on MPEG2 Full DVD Quality or H264 NTSC Standard, I want to play it to external TV to play only the video, I tried VLC and connected the TV as second monitor and configured VLC to play video on second monitor, it works, but quality is poor and blurry, if I play the same video from DVD player or from my PC to the monitor it looks full quality but from VLC in that way on the Imac I told you the bad quality problem, What software can I use to play videos getting the BEST quality on my TV?? I have also a CANOPUS that I can connect to Firewire port on my pc I use that to get video signal output but VLC on my Imac didn't recognize the Canopus? What can I do to play videos on my TV on the best quality? what software or what configuration?? Thanks

In Extended Desktop Mode (Mirroring Off) you can drag the QuickTime video to the external TV monitor and then Enter Full Screen.
    {quote:}Can I do that on quicktime? have the controls and playlist and modify it during playback in main monitor and video playback ion my TV?{quote}
No, I think that your are going to need something stronger than VLC or QuickTime to accomplish that?
Head over to the iMovie or Pro Applications: Video sections of the forum and check around there to see if one of those will suit your needs.

  • No video output to ext monitor in rehearsal mode

(My whole presentation is made up of video and stills)
Hi, when I'm in rehearsal mode (Keynote 6.5.2) i cannot get full screen video output to my ext monitor.  It is only a black screen. In 'play mode' the presentation plays fine and it will give me full screen video but then i have no control of the presentation as it just plays out to the length of the clips used in each slide. I managed to save as a Powerpoint presentation which allowed me to use the play function and control it manually but i could not see the current slide playing in the presenter display. It also wiped all my trimming settings of the videos i am using.
Is there a way to run my presentation in rehearsal mode and have full screen video outputed to an external monitor and see my current slide playing on my presenter display.
My whole presentation is video and stills.
    I am using an iMac, 2.9GHz i5, 8GB Ram, OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.
    Thanks in advance
    Jason

if i use an iPad to control it gives me full control to advance on click
Please clarify;   you use the iPad remote control feature to advance manually a presentation on your Mac, or you are playing the presentation on your iPad.
Did you create the presentation on the Mac yourself and what version of Keynote did you use?
    Try this test:
create a new blank presentation then drag and drop (do not copy and paste) four slides on to the navigator panel in the blank presentation
the Navigator panel is the view of slides in a column on the left hand side of the canvas.
check the settings are set for manual play as I described before:
Inspector  > Document > Document > Presentation Type:     change to Normal
select all the slides in the navigator then;    Inspector > Animate > Start Transition:     change to On Click
click the video on the slide then;     Inspector > Animate > Build In > build order button > change drop down menu to:  on click
if the presentation plays manually, drag and drop the remaining slides over.

  • 24" 2008 iMac with busted video card, advice needed.

I have a 2008 24" iMac in which the video card is busted. The machine will turn on, get to the log in screen with no issues, however there is absolutely no video output to the screen.
I have attempted connecting it to an external monitor using mini DVI to VGA and a VGA cable, but the machine is not set to display to an external monitor.
Having the video card replaced will cost in the region of €300, an amount I'm reluctant to spend on a machine which is seven years old.
I have it backed up, so I'm really looking for advice to to how to wipe it so I can sell it on for parts, or other suggestions...

Your welcome, your new iMac likely does not have a Firewire port so you will need a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter like:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r?fnode=51
I noticed several available on E-Bay however where you decide to get one is totally up to you.

  • Video output separate from screen

This may be more complicated than I suspect. We have had a string of thiefts from my office lately. The thieves are only taking things they can fit in their pockets, loose change, digital cameras, digital video cameras, stuff like that. My iMac is always on and running in screen saver mode. I'd like to have the imac camera signal being fed to my Security DVR device, while the screen saver is still running. I can get the signal to my DVR via the video output, but of course it only show what I see on the primary display. Can I separate those two video signals and capture what the camera see's while the screen saver is on?
    Thank you,
    Todd

Have you tried using *extended desktop mode* and setting the external display (ie your DVR) as the primary display? That would make your iMac display the secondary display and provided you don't drag any windows onto it, it should only show a blank screen.
You will need to have a separate display connected to your DVR so you can see things to set it up once you switch the iMac into extended desktop mode & set the external display as your primary display
You do this in +System Prefs > Displays+ but the controls for the external display only appear when you have an external display connected. You start extended desktop mode by UNchecking the mirror displays item. Once you are sure everything is working correctly, you could turn off the external display while your DVR continues to record.

  • Late 2009 iMac Mini DisplayPort video input

Supposedly you can connect a video source to the MDP port, rather opposite of it's traditional use on older models. I see no option in System Preferences - displays that mentions switching to this new input. Does the Mac auto sense a signal here and switch to in automatically? Does the manufacturers of MDP to HDMI adapters have anything to say if their devices work bidirectionally? And if they do support joined audio over HDMI like some do, then again do they do that bidirectionally. Of course this is a Apple forum and Apple moderators can't speak about 3rd party products, but they could tell us how video in would work from either a setup TV tuner box or a blu-ray player.

This is a user to user forum. There is no moderator participation explaining anything, just we users are here for that.
Many things about Macs are auto-detected by them and when detected the appropriate preferences appear as if by magic. Someone with a new iMac who has successfully connected to an input source would be able to say definitively if the preferences change.
As for what can be hooked up to the port and used, most of the adapters of which you refer are uni-directional, designed for video output only. Apple states explicitly in the webpages describing the new iMacs and their features that the port accepts a signal from another device with a mini-DisplayPort only. So if you have a Mac laptop with a m-DP you can hook it to your new iMac as the monitor with a m-DP to m-DP cable. Apple sells one made by Belkin in the Apple Store.
The other thing about the m-DP is that is does not carry audio. So the idea of hooking it up to a Blu-Ray player is still just a hyped idea. However, it appears that Belkin is developing a black box to facilitate this idea. Earlier in the week some folks here in the forum linked a Belkin website page with an HDMI to m-DP adapter to convert an HDMI signal to m-DP input. Later this week Belkin took down the page, so perhaps it is not yet ready for production and sales! On one side is an HDMI input. Coming out the other side is both a m-DP and a USB port. I think that the black box separated the signal into audio, to send to the Mac over USB and video, to send to the Mac over m-DP. The USB port could also supply any power the box may need to its job.

  • Where is Video output port?

  • How connect a 27 cinema display to HP Pavilion with VGA video output

how connect a 27 cinema display to HP Pavilion with VGA video output

If it is a thunderbolt version of the apple 27" display, you don't.  The TB displays can only work with a TB source.
I also think you are out of luck with the mini-displayport versions of the apple 27" as well.   This would imply converting an analog VGA output  to a digital input of the 27".  I suspect that there is not enough data supplied by VGA for that to work and I do not believe any adapters exist for this.

  • How can I do live streaming with a Mac Book Pro 2011, using a new model of Sony HD camcorder which does not have firewire out/input? it comes only with a component video output, USB, HDMI and composite RCA output?

I need to do live streaming with a Mac Book Pro 2011, using a new model of Sony HD camcorder (http://store.sony.co...ber=HDRAX2000/H) ..this camcorder model does not have firewire out/input ..it comes only with a component video output, USB, HDMI and composite A/V video output..
I wonder how can I plug this camcorder to the firewire port of my laptop? Browsing on internet I found that Grass Valley Company produces this converter http://www.amazon.co...=A17MC6HOH9AVE6 ..but I am not sure -not even after checking the amazon reviews- if this device will send the video signal through firewire to my laptop, in order to live streaming properly? ..anyone in this forum could help me please?
    Thanx

I can't broadcast with the built in iSight webcam... how would I zoom in or zoom out? or how would I pan? I've seem people doing it walking with their laptops but that's not an option for me... there's nothing wrong with my USB ports but that's neither an option to stream video because as far as I know through USB you can't connect video in apple operating systems ..you can for sure plug any video cam or photo camera through usb but as a drive to transfer data not as a live video camera...  is by firewire an old interface developed by apple that you can connect all sorts of cameras to apple computers... unfortunately my new sony HDR-AX2000 camcorder doesn't have firewire output...

  • Vga or dvi to video output to NTSC TV viewing

GEAR: I have a G4 dual 1.25 (silver double doors) with an ADC and DVI output in the back.
OBJECTIVE: I need to go from that to an NTSC TV so I can see what my edits look like.
NOT SURE: I have seen the Apple adapter (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/7200505/wo/0K4TK pkMz7f922WszZYxFQMUy31/1.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.2.3) but it says it is for the MAC mini and the G5 only... does that mean it won't work for me?
OPTION B: Is getting a video card with an RCA or S-video output a better idea? If so which one? I am using both the ADC and DVI ports for two monitors, but would nuke one if necessary because I have to get this TV viewing capability up and running.
OPTION C for CANOPUS: I have also thought about the Canopus ADVC 100 or 300 so I can capture video from sources other than my DV Sony DSR-30. Right now, I have to record everything (everything that isn't DV) to DV on the DSR-30 before turning around to send it via firewire for capturing in FCP. Would the Caopus ADVC 100 or 300 also solve the TV viewing problem as well?
    THANKS: in advance

Firewire to a DV/analog converter to your NTSC monitor. The only way for DV.
the DV/Analog converter can be either a dedicated converter (eg Canopus), a DV VTR deck (eg Sony DSR-11) or a camcorder.
the other options are not what you need.
