IMAC G5 NOISE ??? vs MAC MINI

I WANT TO BUY A NEW MAC,but i'm very concerned about the posts and issues of noise, i want a quiet mac, like i have now, please some one could advice me
Every body has the noise problem and how terrible is
I will buy a MAC MINI, bu i;m attracted to the higher performance and specification of Imac but the noise???

In general terms, a Mac Mini will be a quieter machine.
But it's all about distance and perspective. Think about it - with an iMac, your ENTIRE computer is right smack-dab in front of your face. You can always hide a mini under your desk, put it on the opposite corner of your desk, etc. You don't have that luxury with an iMac - although I'd take my iMac over a mini anyday of the week. Let me say this, though - I've never had any noise problems with my iMac. Sure, it gets somewhat louder when I'm running intense programs or a good number of them at the same time, but the ONLY time I've heard it over it's normal whisper would be when I run, say Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, Mail, Safari, AIM, iPhoto, and Dashboard at the same time. Not bad considering the number of programs, though. iMacs are "whisper quiet" as they state on the page - but they're not silent. They ARE machines, lest we forget. They have moving parts. If you live in the middle of the woods and have no noise at ALL then you might hear it a bit - but it's not annoying and it's still whisper quiet.
There are many disadvantages to a Mini over an iMac, though:
1. Processor speed. There's quite a jump in performance with a 1.8/2GHz G5 processor found in the iMac when compared with the slower 1.33/1.42GHz G4 found in the Mac Mini.
2. Upgradeable RAM. Minis can only hold a max of 1GB while an iMac can FLY with a 2GB RAM upgrade.
3. Slower hard-drive in the mini.
4. Low-end video card in the mini - even worse than the one found in the current 12" iBook!
Just think about your needs for the future. I wanted to keep the same machine for about 3-4 years, and I didn't have an external monitor, keyboard, or mouse; so the 20" 2Ghz iMac G5 was the perfect solution. I love the all-in-one design, because when I replace it I just have to worry about one thing - instead of separate pieces like I would with the mini. I like having everything match. A G5 processor will keep you up-to-pace with the computer market longer than a G4 will, obviously.

  • I need help to take decision to choose between iMac Late 13 and Mac Mini Late 12

    Hey guys,
I have currently got iMac 27 3.2 GHz mid 2010 and since I am a photographer it unfortunately dosn't meet my requirments at all! It has recently become too slow and that is why I have taken my decision to purchase a new desktop to improve!
I was intensely awaiting new Mac Mini Late 2013 at Apple 22 Oct event yet no new Mac Mini came up for upcoming year! Now I am very skeptical to choose between to options; iMac Late 2013 and Mac Mini Late 2012! Since having high performance is really essential for me, I am going to tune up my device with 2 Samsung 840 PRO SSD and 16GB RAM to take advantage of the best possible performance.
Since I can easily utilise my iMac 2010 27" as display for Mac Mini, please instruct me which on I should buy or I have to be more patient for next Mac Mini!
    Thanks in advance!

I am not sure how you are planning to "easily utilise my iMac 2010 27" as display for Mac Mini" I am concerned that might not work out nearly as well as you might think. I have seen that attempted by others and the results were pretty clunky and could easily wipe out any anticipated speed gains. Be sure and talk to someone who uses an iMac as a display for another computer before you spend any money.
That said, if I were in your shoes I would either go with a current top end iMac or a maxed out, top end Mac mini and a 27" Thunderbolt monitor. You will end up spending about the same either way. You can save a few hundred dollars buying factory refurbished machines from the online Apple Store or Smalldog.com but you take your choice of what is available and don't expect it to be there tomorrow.

  • How do I transfer my pictures from my iMac to my new Mac Mini?

How do I transfer my pictures from my iMac to my new Mac Mini?

Are they in an iPhoto Library? If so:
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • DC iMac v. DC Mac Minis

I'm looking to purchase either a Dual Core iMac (2 GHZ, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD), or a DC Mac Mini (2GHZ, 2GB RAM, 100MB) for use in my home studio, running Logic Pro 7.2.
If I go Mini, I have to buy a Monitor, 20" = $800. The basic breakdown between the comparable systems is: $2,000.00 for either system.
The iMac has more muscle, but the Mini would give me an independent 20" display.
For the purposes of running Logic (non-professionally), and ignoring the node possibility: What are some of the factors that would color your decisions one way or the other?
I will not be using either system for live performances.
Powerbook "17   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   I love this machine. I think it has a soul. It must.

One difference is that with the iMac you couldn't isolate the CPU to cut down on ambient noise while recording audio. This of course assumes that you would be recording audio in the same room as your computer monitor.
For example, when building my little recording room, I put a hole in the wall by the corner. I bought a couple of flanges at a plumbing supply house and screwed them to the wall, which provides a pass-through for cabling. I have my G5 CPU right outside the door, so that I can access the cd drive but by closing the door I cut out fan noise.
    Just some food for thought,
    Jim

i have a 27in mid 2011 iMac and i have been given a 2006 mac mini i have no screen to see whats going on on the mini and there is no os onboard how do i get OS X on to the mini so i can get to use this with a tv with hdmi i have the mini dvi to vga connector and a vga to hdmi lead into a samsung 32in led tv, tv keeps saying not connected???

    - You said "Apple dvi to via converter with a via to hdmi cable . What is a "via"? I think you mean VGA.
Just what VGA to HDMI cable to you have?  VGA is analogue while HDMI is digital. The Mini DVi out is both analogue and digital (DVI-AD). You would need a converter to convert the analogue VGA to digital.
    - Yes, when you boot up you should get a chime if the Mac is functional. The chime The sound indicates that diagnostic tests run immediately at startup have found no hardware or fundamental software problems.[1]
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_startup
Thus it appears the Mini also has a hardware problem.

  • Use HD trashed iMac as monitor for Mac Mini?

I have a 20" iMac that recently had a hard drive failure that I  have not been able  to overcome. Rather than trashing it, is there a way to use it as a display for a Mac Mini?

Maybe if you are very good at electronics. There is not easy way on older iMacs. If it was a newer one with a Thunderbolt connection then yes.
If you can install a good HD with OSX you can use screen sharing.

  • Chirping noise on Mac Mini problem

Mac Mini makes chirping noise-stops when top icons selected
New Mac user here, upgraded to Leopard but problem also occurred under Tiger -- Problem: periodically (no apparent reason), while browsing with either Safari or Firefox, Mac mini starts making a chirping noise -- chirping will stop under a few conditions -- e.g., if icon on top (i.e., Bluetooth, Wireless, speaker, etc) is selected) -- chirping will resume when mouse is brought back down on desktop -- eventually closing browser or some other action will stop the chirping -- doesn't "appear" to me to be hardware as indicated in other previous posts --- anybody have any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance --

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
While it hasn't been reported very often at all, this 'chirping' has cropped up a couple of times with new minis, though there has not been any apparent cause or cure that I recall being discussed.
First thing to do is test to see if this is drive related. I would download a copy of MenuMeters (http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/menumeters/) and set it to display at least the disk activity and paging indicators (the latter in the memory tab). Watch to see if the chirping is then associated with disk read or write activity. If it is, then you may have a drive problem, and at the very least should ensure that you take regular backups, or indeed have the system examined with a view to possibly replacing the drive.
If the chirping is not associated with disk activity, then it becomes rather harder to pin-point, but if the system is still under warranty, I'd be inclined to have Apple, or an authorized service provider, look at it. If not under warranty but you have an Apple store in your area, you could take it in to have a 'genius' look at it, though beware that in the bustle of a retail store, noises may be harder to hear of course.

  • IMac 21.5" or Mac Mini

    Hi there,
I'd like to start by saying that I am completely new to Macs, and so any advice would be very helpful.
I am trying to choose between the mid-range iMac 21.5" and the mid-range Mac Mini, on whichever one I choose I will be adding the Fusion Drive.  I am a Computer Science student about to finish University and would use the Mac mostly for work, which would involve mostly software and web development.  I am mainly concerned with which would perform better for what I would like to do.
A small sub-question would be can anyone recommend some good programs to use for software and web development, as I have only ever done this on a Windows PC in the past.
Thanks very much for any help.
    Matt

    For mid range items:
iMac quad core i5 vs Mini dual core i5.
iMac Iris Pro graphics vs. Mini Iris graphics.
    iMac better performer.
For developing software for Macs, Xcode by Apple is the way to go and it is free.

  • Speaker noise while Mac Mini is in sleep mode

    Hello together,
my Mac Mini produces strange hizz/buzz sounds for approx. half a second every few minutes while it sleeps.
The noise is quite loud and it is a rather annoying sound. I experience these sounds if I connect the Mac Mini via the normal audio out connector on both my Audioengine 5 speakers as well as a Denon amp.
Is there any way to get rid of this noise?

    Thanks for your idea!
Unfortunately, I don't think that's it - all cell phones are away from the machine (and i know the "dadididida" sound of cell phones quite well).
I also thought that it could be a huge machine that is switched on somewhere but then again I have my stuff behind a surge protector so that I think that any such stuff would be filtered. The fact that it is periodic and happened here in the states as well as in Europe makes me wonder if it is an issue with the mac itself.
Anyone else who has that issue?

A very commonly asked question, but the straight answer is no. I know of no solution to this (although I am working on it!).

  • IMac G5 vs Intel Mac Mini

    Hi guys,
My question is actually the title to the thread... which is faster?
I have a 20inch iMac G5 Rev A and am debating selling it, putting an intel mini into a spare cube case and running two monitors from it or something - or at least one big one!
Before people chip in with opinions about any mods, I would love to know which machine is faster and any other benefits I might like to know about.
You can pretend I will leave the mini alone if that helps.

I considered the same thing myself. I came to the conclusion that while the CPU itself was indeed faster, the HD is slower and smaller, and it has an inferior graphics card. I also run CS2 and since it is not an Intel-native app, I didn't want to give up the native performance.
It is not much and I am not a hard-core CS user so it doesn't really make that much of a difference, but it was something else to consider.

  • Noise levels from 2010 Mac Mini 2.4GHz

My old Mac Mini died recently and I replaced it with the iMac 2.5GHz, which arrived yesterday. But for some reason, I'm not liking the iMac; using it gives me a headache. It also makes more noise, which is to be expected, it being vastly more powerful. Anyway I'm thinking of sending back the iMac and getting the Mac Mini instead. I assume the latest Mac Mini will be quieter than the current iMac, but I just wondered if it was as quiet as my old one (2007—1.83GHz).
    Michael

I can't speak for the Imac or the old Mini but I have a current Mini and it's about as silent as anything that has a fan.  Unless I am the only person in the room with no TV, airco, aquarium pump or anything else running it's, for all intents and purposes, completely quiet.  The only way I would know it's on is that the tiny little LED is glowing.  Compared to a Gateway PC in the same room with its "hurricane fan", noise wise, the Mini is just a metal slab.

  • I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.

I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.
According to Cruicial my mac mini could use:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-8500
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64
Also According to Cruical my iMac uses:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-12800
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V
I want to increase the ram in both computers.
So,  can I put the iMac ram in my mac mini and then I'd only have to buy ram for my iMac?  Naturally the ulitmate test will be when I actually install it,  but having an expectation of success or failure will allow me to plan on what to spend money on.
    Thanks,
    Bear

Thanks for the responses.  I probably wont even try as my priority is Ram for the mac mini.  2 is not enough.  8 for my imac is okay for now.
Somewhere I thought I'd heard that faster Ram would simply clock at the lower speed.  It seems that I am incorrect.
    Thanks,
    Bear

  • Can I use iMac as display for new mac mini?

can I hook my early 2008 24" Core 2 Duo iMac to a new Mac Mini to use as a display?
I love the display, but my iMac is getting too slow, even with the maximally upgraded RAM to 4 GB.  I don't want to get rid of my iMac, so I was thinking of buying a Mac Mini to attach it.
I'm worried that the OS X Yosemite will make my iMac even slower.
    Any suggestions?
    Nick

Not without a standalone monitor; that iMac doesn't support video in.
