IMac G5, nuke and pave, new power supply, want to start fresh!

Hi there. My iMac G5 is old and was put away for years after the power supply broke. Well, my 6 year old decided to fix it. Sent the power supply off for repair. $59 later, we're back on... but we are ONLY back on. Nothing is booting up. Just spinning and flashing a ???. I'm on Lion with all my other computers. How can I just nuke the old G5's OS and start fresh? I have old Snow Leopard Disks. Can I start from that? Any thoughts?

The latest OS you can use on a G5 is 10.5.8, Snow Leopard is only for intel machines.  Use a retail copy of Leopard and you should be all set, or use the install discs that came with the machine.  You can call Apple, give them your serial number and they will send you new install discs.

hi i am from ireland and moving to canada i want to take my apple imac is this possible or do i need a new power supply?

A gentle reminder.   Unless you will be permanently resident in Canada and have a Canadian based banking/credit card arrangement you may not be able to buy from the Mac App store or iTunes.

  • IMac G5 ALS not booting with new power supply and perfect capacitors

Hey guys. Just got this beauty yesterday for cheap. Came with the box, 2 of 4 Styrofoam inserts, the manual, the power cord, and the keyboard.
I was told it has a brand new power supply. When I plug it in, LED #1 on the motherboard comes to life. pressing the power button does nothing. I have tried everything: blowing out any dust, reseating all connectors, booting without RAM, adding a hard drive (did not have one), removing the optical drive, modem, and BT/ap card. The only sign of life is when I press the internal power button, and the light flickers. This is promising.
I did notice when it is plugged in, there is a high pitched whine coming from where the LED is. I hope this is not causing the problem.
All capacitors are perfect, and not burst or leaking. I had a 1.25ghz eMac with bad caps, so I know what they look like.
I removed the motherboard, and there is no sign of any fried component on either side. It looks like a brand new machine basically.
I was thinking of just getting another good logic board for it, as they are cheap, or ask a friend to recap the board anyway.
Anyone here know what could be wrong with it? I hope I did not just waste money on this. It was relitively cheap though.

I'm with Miriam on this one. That "new" supply sounds bad. Look very carefully inside the power supply (through the little perforations in the case) I'll bet you see caps w/ the same domed tops like you've seen before. That whine is also a symptom of a bad PSU. It's not even strong enough to power the soft start.
I've seen 2 20" and 3 17"ers recently. Replaced caps on 3 of the PSUs and got one to work on a 17" that belonged to a teacher so that went back. Swapped the working PSU from one of the 20s w/ a bad GPU into the one w/ a bad PSU. It's working but in a place where I can keep an eye on it since I don't trust it since the caps don't look good.
    I've done this hack:
    http://gallery.me.com/iamkimc#100033&view=grid&bgcolor=black&sel=12
and can get all the iMacs to work that way. Advantage - cheap, totals 1/3 or the replacement Apple part (used). Con - boxes outside the nice iMac case.
The auto laptop supply loads the Sparkle down too much for the 20" however. I'm working on finding an auto supply that saps less Amps or a simple voltage doubler for the 12V supply to solve that problem.
The ATX hack is pretty simple and only requires switching two 12V leads. Oddly one of the early versions of the 17"ers ran fine without the 20V inverter power. Go figure.

  • New power supply and sleep light question

I just got my iMac back with a new power supply and logic board installed under the Apple repair extension program. I had diagnosed the problem using the Apple troubleshooting assistant online. When I did this I also reset the SMU (system management unit) per the instructions with the troubleshooting assistant.
My computer is now working correctly but when I run Software Update I am prompted to install the iMac G5 Sleep Light Update version 1.0. I had previously installed version 2.0.0 back in July/05. I don't have the ambient light sensor iMac. I am a little nervous about installing this version or reinstalling the version I alreay have in my utilities. I realize this is a firmware update and cannot be reversed.
Anyone else experience this with 2 different versions of the Sleep Light Update, I don't seem to be able to find any info on the Apple site.
    Thanks for any info
    Scott

"reinstalling the version I alreay have in my utilities"
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have it in your utilities folder, I believe that means that the installer folder has been downloaded, but the install was not done. I am thinking that once installed, it disappears from the Utilities folder.
I see no reason why you would need to do that firmware update if you don't want it. In the future, if you or someone else wants to do the update, it'll still be available on the Apple website.

  • Nuke and pave 2007 iMac and 2009 MacBook Pro

    Hi all,
I'm a moderately competent Mac user, with a mid 2007 iMac and mid 2009 MacBook Pro both running the OSX 10.9.3. (What I know about running a Mac I've taught myself so maybe the term "moderately competent" is a little biased!)
I'm seriously thinking about wiping both my machines to out-of-the-box, factory settings, and reinstalling all necessary software from scratch. Most of my applications are available online and I still have all license keys, as well as the disks for any other applications that require them. I also know the basics such as documents stored on either machine need backed up otherwise I'd loose them. What I'm not sure of is this a good idea at all? The last thing I want to do is do irreparable damage to my beloved Macs!
There are a few reasons I'm contemplating such a daunting process. First of all, I fell like iMac and MacBook have both got quite slow in the last few months. I've read here about solutions to such a problem, but to be honest, I didn't have much of a clue what the solutions involved which to me was a warning sign not to go with it (maybe the "moderately competent user" label was a little more than biased!!!). The other reason is that I feel like there's lots of unnecessary applications, settings and other data on both machines that a nuke and pave process would get rid of.
This all started happening when I added a few user adducts for additional users, but don't think I done that correctly ("moderately competent user" is getting thinner and thiner isn't it??) so when getting both machines back up and running again, I would know better how to set up separate accounts and set different permissions for accessing applications for each, different user settings for each etc etc etc.
Any help and advice is much appreciated.
    Thanks
    E

Thanks everyone for their help here, some really good advice.
Drew, I'd need some more explanation around the steps you suggest in your post, but for now, I was hoping maybe some, if not all of you could take a look at the EtreCheck report that I just done for the iMac.
I also wonder might this report differ from one user account to another on the same machine?
Really appreciate all the help and advice from everyone guys!

  • Elite m9200t. Just quit working. Does not go into bios. new power supply - nothing but fans.

    HP Elite M9200t
    Windows 7 32-bit
    Error Messages:  None
    No changes made to system.
I hit the turn-on button one morning and nothing happened.  Looked in the case and was running except the case fan.  No lights were on.  I tested the power supply and it tested good.  Tried again - nothing.  Connected a new power supply and tried again; Lights worked and cpu fan worked, but no attempt at boot.
I have disconnected everything - same result.
Does this sound like a bad ASUS mortherboard?

Heather, the PSU for the first gen G5 iMacs and the ALS models are the same physical size, but the ALS PSU is an auto-switching 110-220v model. Nice to have, but not the cause of the problem if it is working correctly.
Is your first gen one of those effected by the Repair Extension Program? If so, you actually have 2 years on problems related to the PSU and video.
Give Apple a call back and see if they have any suggestions, but don't let them put you off as you are still within the warrantee.

  • Installed new Power Supply unit.

For the past few months I have had the Sleep/Wake, Start-up problems wih my 1.8Ghz 20" G5 iMac, no iSight, no ALS, that so many G5 iMac owners have been experiencing, until it would not start up at all. No visibly bad caps on the logicboard but at least 4 bad caps in the Power Supply. I cleaned all the dust out of everywhere & I have finally gotten a new Power Supply unit, & installed it today, also changed the CR2032 lithium battery. I am ready to start up and I wonder what procedures should I perform to make sure I have covered all the bases to be back to normal conditions. Do I need to reset the SMU, reset the PRAM, Repair Permissions, run Apple Hardware Test on the Install Disc, etc.?
As usual, all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    John

    hi Ralph,
Well, i started up & everything seemed to work OK, put it to sleep for about 20 minutes & woke it with the mouse, which I haven't been able to do for quite a while. I ran Apple Hardware Test from the Install Disc & everything Passed, hooray. Then I opened Disk Utility , chose "Macintosh HD" & ran Verify Permissions. A long list of "Permissions differ on ..." came up, starting with a "User differs on...".
User differs on ./Developer/Examples/WebKit/DiskCacheInspector/DiskCacheInspector.xcode/project .pbxproj, should be, owner is
    Permissions differ on./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences, should be , they are
Permissions differ on ./Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flash Player.plugin/Contents/Info.plist, should be , they are
Permissions differ on ./Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flash Player.plugin/Contents/MacOS/Flash Player, should be , they are
Permissions differ on ./Library/Internet Plug-Ins/flashplayer.xpt, should be , they are
Permissions differ on ./Library/Preferences, should be , they are
Permissions differ on ./Library, should be , they are
Permissions differ on ./private/var/log/secure.log, should be , they are
What thet should be & what they are are a lot of r's, w's & x's. I didn't type here what it said they are or what they should be because I don't know if there might be a security risk or not. Probably concerned over nothing.
Anyway, should I Repair Permissions or are they supposed to differ.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • My 24" iMac just died and will not power-up.  What can I do?

My 24" iMac just died and will not power-up.  What can I do?

Bring it into an Apple Store for a free diagnosis and quote for cost of repair/replacement of parts.
If the costs are $500 or over, consider using the money toward a new or "newer" (used) Mac.

  • Problem with NEW H520 when installed new power supply & graphic card. Please help!

My H520 was working perfectly and was running FAST..especially when rebooting. ( It was AWESOME!  )Then I installed a new power supply (Coolmax 400w) and a new graphic card (Sapphire Radeon HD6450) and then everything changed.  Now my computer is booting very SLOWLY and all the programs are taking a long time to load too.  I was getting a black screen for almost a full 2 minutes before the windows 8.0 screen would finally load up and then it hangs there for a few seconds and finally goes to the start screen in windows.  But BEFORE I installed this new hardware, when I would reboot, I would see the Lenovo splash screen come up for a few short seconds and then it instantly went to the windows welcome screen.  And even then I would barely have enough time to see the welcome screen before it instantly loaded into the windows start screen.  Everything would load up fast on the desktop too and we'd be good to go. It all took about 30 SECONDS.
But now? It takes MINUTES to get everything going.   After it FINALLY loads up (it takes almost 2 full minutes now!), everything hangs up.  When you first click on the desktop, it takes a few seconds for all of the icons to pop up.  Before I loaded the new hardware, everything loaded up instantly.  I didn't even see the icons load because they were already there.  But now I have to wait for them to load up before I can even see them.  And it's like that with every program and web browser I try to use now.  Everything hangs up at first and then finally loads.  The programs work but they are sluggish.
So I uninstalled the new power supply and put back in the original 280w power supply and I took out the graphic card but it did no change.  The machine is STILL running slow on everything it does and booting very slowly.
I have seen this problem mentioned elsewhere about Lenovo computers but there is never a solution.  Please help!  It took me a long time to save up for this computer and I have been babying it ever since.  I will never be able to afford a new one or pay for tech repair.  I need to fix this!    I was so thrilled with this computer before the hardware upgrade. This is devastating to me that it is working so poorly now when all I was trying to do was upgrade it a little bit.     Now it's performing horribly and it's only 6 months old.
I ran a four hour test on the hard drive and it is fine.  I ran all the system clean ups, optimizations, registry cleanups, windows disk cleaner, defragger and virus scans. Nothing is showing up as not working but there is CLEARLY a problem.  It was never this slow.   And why is it STILL acting this slow even after I uninstalled all of the new hardware that made it start acting this way and went back to the original setup?
I'm trying to run a memory test on it now but the BIOS will NOT allow me to select another drive to boot from so I can't boot from the flash drive or CD drive to run the memory test.  I have NO IDEA what to do next and I am starting to pull my hair out in frustration.
Please, is there anything that can be done to make it better again?
Any help would be HUGELY appreciated.    Thank you!
    Sincerely,
    Jennifer

I totally give up!!  I restored everything to the ORIGINAL state with drivers AND hardware and STILL everything is not working properly like it was BEFORE the upgrade.
So this has been the WORST experience with Tech support EVER!!  I have spent DAYS on the phone for HOURS with these technicians and nobody seems to know what they are doing.  They put me on hold every 10 minutes and are gone for 10 to 15 minutes and when they come back, they seem all set on a new solution but when you ask them questions about it, they have NO CLUE how to answer and then they put you on hold again.  Nothing gets solved and after HOURS on the phone, I just tell them to stop because we are getting no where but running around in circles that make no sense.    THIS A NIGHTMARE!!
So I totally gave up on being able to upgrade this machine.  To any future buyers, I STRONGLY recommend you do all upgrading BEFORE you get it home for the first time.  Make sure you have your power supply and graphic card INCLUDED before you bring it home or you're mostly likely going to have a NIGHTMARE upgrading it later.    Technical support is a HORROR STORY and expect to be WAITING for LOOOOONNNNG periods of time both ON THE PHONE and ONLINE and probably ending up with NO SOLUTION in the end.
I've VERY upset with how this turned out!!  I'm just gonna have to deal with the fact that my computer is permenantly messed up and NOBODY AT LENOVO knows how to fix it.    So I'm stuck.
I decided to send back the new power supply and the new graphic card because of this nightmare with tech support.  I put everything back to the way it was when I bought the computer and it is STILL acting up!!  I just want to revert it back to factory settings .. INCLUDING THE BIOS... but Lenovo said I have to send the WHOLE computer back to them to do that.  All I can do from home is restore from a point in the hard drive and that's not enough.  I need a TOTAL CLEAN INSTALL.  Everything needs to be wiped out and reset, not just restored to a previous restore point.  I've done this multiple times and all it does is erase all the programs and stuff I put on the computer.  The drivers and other codes are still the same.  And then bugs come up and things get all wonky.  I NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE I TRIED TO UPGRADE IT!!
I am NOT comfortable with Lenovo's "solution". I do NOT want to send my computer back to them for them to reset it with factory disks ESPECIALLY when they stated that they are NOT responsible for any damage in transport or otherwise. I have to buy extra packaging to make sure it gets there safely. They told me to use the original box and packaging, that is the only way they can be sure it will get there safe.  Who has the original stuffing SIX MONTHS LATER?!?! I don't want to be sending my computer across the country to get jostled all over the place and have that add to the slowness of the hardware because it was jostled.
Can't I reset it from home?  Can they not send ME the disks instead of me sending my whole computer to them?
I'm so incredibly frustrated with this.  I hope somebody answers quickly and that I don't have to wait DAYS to get a response again.
I absolutely LOVED my Lenovo computer!  And then I tried to upgrade it.  BIG MISTAKE!!  Now everything is totally messed up and Lenovo's customer support for technical problems is HORRID!!
Somebody please help.  This is driving me crazy with frustration and totally breaking my heart.  It took me a VERY long time to save up for this computer and it was my most loved possession.  It was a reward for a lot of hard times and now it's all broken and acting slow.  And it's only 6 months old.
Is there a solution to this very frustrating problem?
I just want it to go back to the way it was before.
And is there a very low cost KNOWN TO WORK WITH THIS MACHINE upgraded graphic card and power supply?  Is there a very specific brand and make?  If so, could you let me know what it is in case I try to upgrade it again someday?
Thank you for your time and for reading this!
Please have a FANTASTIC day today!!
    ~Jennifer~

  • Imac G5, Can I use a power supply from a G4 Q-silver (rewired connector)?

I've got a G5 Imac with a blown PS, and I'm thinking of modifying a G4 Quicksilver power supply for use as the power source for a 20" Imac G5. Yeah, I know it sounds a bit weird, but hey, I was given this Imac G5 (1st Gen. 1.8GHz) for free. It's missing the back cover, and the PS is shot. So if I blow it up it no major loss. It's a project!
I have determined that the original PS is shot and needs to be replaced. I don't really want to drop $140 for a replacement PS, as I would also have purchase the back cover for another $40 + shipping. Go figure, right? It appears that most of those power suppies tend to fail early, anyway.
During my checks of the Imac internals, I also noted that during the "power on" tests, using the old power supply, I would get the second indicator light on the motherboard to flash for just a moment. According to Apple, this indicates that the motherboard is probably good, and that the power supply is bad as it's only providing a momentary voltage spike during the start up faze, before the power drains from the PS. Then it quits. So I thought, is it possible to use the QS power supply, only modifying (rewire) the main 22 pin connector voltages so they match the Imac's pinout? Both connectors are 22 pin and most of the pinout voltages match up the same. There would appear to be only two major connectors that would need to be rewired. So can I use a modified QS power supply to power my Imac?
A couple of extra notes about this Imac:
    1) There is no back or stand with this Imac, it just the main guts. So I would need to build a suitable enclosure to maintain proper air flow, and use the QS power supply outside the Imac. That wouldn't appear to be a big problem.
    2) My biggest concern is this. The QS power supply uses 28v for the start circuits, versus 24v for the G5 Imac PS. Would this make a significant difference, and if so, why? I'm assuming it will, but it an area I'm unsure of with the Imac. Any thoughts or experiance in this area here would be greatly appreciated.
    3) Hey, if worse comes to worse, I can always purchase the extra parts and rebuild the Imac for around $200-$300 US, and it would still be a deal (at least I think so). However, at present this is just a pet project, and if it goes south (doesn't work), it's not like I'm out some major $$$$.
    Thanks in advance!

I have no idea whether your ideas would work, but go to xlr8yourmac.com for some ideas. If you decide to purchase parts, try [http://www.synaptech.com/catalog> and also look at [http://www.jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php] for tips.

  • New power supply adapter for MD-100

Is there any place where I can get a new power supply adapter (or a new power supply) for my Nokia MD-100 speaker? I have a UK adapter now, which was inlcuded, but I want one for swedish sockets instead. I have an "external" adapter now, but I hoping I can get a proper adapter which fits the power supply.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Joakim.

    Hi Joakim,
Do you have the original UK charger for the Nokia PowerUp? If it's the one with the removable pins would you sell me the UK pins? And perhaps someone else has the Swedish clip, I've got a spare USA one.

  • DC5750 New Power Supply Problems

I have a DC5750 (mini case). Everything is working fine with it. It comes with a 300W power supply. I am in the process of purchasing a new video card for it but the video card requires at least a 500W power supply. I purchased a Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus 550W PSU (http://www.coolermaster.com/products/product.php?act=detail&id=5888).
When I plug in the new power supply and turn on the PC the fans start to spin and then stop and the front power LED goes red and i get 9 continuous beeps followed by a couple of seconds of silence and then the pattern repeats itself. I have checked the HP website documentation for the DC5750 and it says that when you get these beeps to make sure that the correct voltage is set on the back of the PSU. I have made sure of this, it is set to 115V. There was also a long paragraph about the kind of power cord that you should use and I did use the one that came with the PSU and also the one that I was using before hand, but no still dice.
I have unplugged everything except the power to the motherboard when testing it and still nothing. I have sure that the 4-pin connector that goes from the PSU to the mobbo is labeled P3 to match the label on the motherboard. I tried putting in the old power supply and everything works like a charm again.
I read somewhere on these forums last night something about the CPU fan sensor and how some people had to trick their systems into thinking the power supply was putting out the same voltage as the original one. They did this by connecting two pins together but there was something about the fact that the pain had to be rated at 100ohms or something. I couldn't quite understand the solution and since it wasn't my same PC model and it was an old post I decided not to try anything of that sort just yet.
Like i said, the PC was running fine before and it is still running ok right now with the old power supply, I would like to upgrade the PSU though with the new 550W one. After i put the old PSU in i went back into the BIOS to see if there was anything related to the power supply that would stop it from booting but I didnt see anything relevant.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    BD
Edit: I just tested the new PSU on a different system and it works just fine.

  • New Power supply, where?

    Hello,
wher can I purchase a new Power supply for my 2002 Quicksilver G4?
    Possibly in Europe...
    Thanks

Do you mean "new" or a replacement? New might be next to impossible, or if you find one it may cost more than a new used computer.
    As suggested, ebay. Might check

I too have had power supply problems with my HP G60-445 DX Notebook.  For the past several months I have needed to jiggle the power cord to get the battery to charge. I finally took it to a computer repair shop.  He ordered an internal power supply box and installed it and after a bill of $125.00 for parts and labor found out that it did not solve the problem.  Dan, the repair person called HP support to ask if they knew of similar problems and if so what is the problem.  Support told him "they don't know of any problems with the power supply"  What a lie!  The problems are all all over the internet!!!  Support told him that if they had to "guess" they would suggest replacing the motherboard.  Dan proceeded to let support know that they absolutely know there are problems with their product and they are choosing to do nothing about it.  You can tell they have made a piss poor product for years and continue to do so without regard for the consumer!  Dan, in his repair shop, has more repairs form HP products and with Compaq products than any other computer!  I wish I knew this before I bought this laptop!
So, now I have the laptop back with a new power supply module and still have an issue with the battery not always charging when plugged in.  I will not pay $300 for a new board and will probably buy a Dell when I have to replace this one.  Please spread the word that HP does not listen to consumers nor care enough to improve their products after years of the same issues.
