IMac G5 "Off the Grid"

I presume the guts of an iMac G5 all run on DC coverted via the power supply from AC. If so, where can I get a schematic of the power supply -- so that I might figure out how to feed the beast DC from an "off the grid" DC source (i.e., photovoltaic, micro-hydro)?

I might add, you posted in the iMac CRT forum, which is the forum for iMacs which look like:
The iMac G5 can be identified here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724
And its forums are found here:

The Intel iMac is not a G5, and its forums can be found here:

I'm happy though to attempt to answer questions you have on them until I don't know an answer, in which case I'd direct you to the appropriate forum.

Yes, you can buy CS6, PC or Mac, Standard or Extended. Here is the purchase page.

  • HT204053 I was using find my iphone on my pc and i accidentally chose to remove the device. I didnt realize it would permanently take the iphone off the grid. I thought it would just temporarily stop locating, How do i find it now with no phone?

I was using find my iphone on my pc and i accidentally removed the device. I thought that meant just temporarily removing it since it was not able to locate or remote lock or wipe my lost phone. Now how do i put it back on? it appears to have ben permanently taken off the grid and now i cannot continue to try to locate my iphone. The phone did have find my iphone turned on. Can i put it back on>? i dont have the phone obviously its stolen.

At this point you can't do anything.  But today, thieves are smart - they know how to combat the Find My iPhone service, so you probably wouldn't find the phone anyway.  That service is primarily used for lost devices, less for stolen devices.

  • Can I turn off the grid in Proto?

Is there any way to hide the grid in Proto?

Yes.  Tap the Grid icon in the menu bar (insert screen shot?).  You should see options to turn the Grid on/off, as well as controls for Snap to gri, CSS Columns, and Grid details (spacing).

  • IMac turn off the HDD that is constantly spinning

    Hi All,
I have a 27' iMac with internal SDD and HDD. I really like how it is so quiet. It worked really well out of the box though had a glitch which required a reinstall of Lion. Now the HDD is constantly spinning even if there are no apps open that require r/w access to the HDD. I've used pmset to turn it off after 1 min but I'd rather it didn't come on at all unless i send something to/from the HDD. Any ideas how to configure this correctly?

Having the disk not mount at all can be done a number of ways depending on how much work you want to do in handling this task.  There are two places/times where this can be done.
    1. You could unmount it at login by placing a unmount app of some kind in your login items or a lunchd plist in your local ~/Library/LaunchAgent.
    2. You can unmount it as the machine is booting by creating a launchd startup item in /Library/StartuItems or /Library/LaunchAgent.
So probably for you the easiest is to use your Login Items to launch an app or whatever to unmount the drive as you log in.
You will need some kind of unmount app that can run non-interactively.  There are unmount apps you can find in macupdate.com but I don't know if they can be made to run non-interactively.
I don't know your level of experience but unmounting can easily be done from a (bash) shell script (diskutil unmount /Volumes/volname) encapsulated as an app with Platypus or just using the script commands with applescript.

  • How can I print from an iPad while off the grid?

Is there any way to simply print from an iPad without there being a wifi network available?  I mean, If I get a printer with AirPrint or blue tooth or something, can I just connect my iPad up directly to that printer and print from it?  I am planning to set up events where there is no wifi signal, such as at a fairgrounds, and I would like to be able to print art and information out for visitors.  It sounds like a great idea and would really help expand my work.  But I am not finding any good solutions.  I would even take a printer with a dock for the iPad if possible.
Has anyone ever come across anything like this?  If not, why haven't they made something like this yet?  It seems to easy to create and work with and would make printing very hassle free for many people.

  • How do I remove the grid in view permanently??

I can't remove the grid in view of CS5.  It comes up on every photo I open though I uncheckk it it each time.  How do I

Usually if you open an image into photoshop, turn off the grid and then close photoshop, that will keep the grid off.
Close photoshop by using File>Exit or Photoshop>Quit Photoshop

  • I can't to turn on the grid screen in my viewfinder.

I went to C. FnIV, highlighted #1 but there is no grid in the viewfinder. What's up?

If you are changing a C.Fn then you have a camera that can take interchangeable focusing screens like an EOS 60D, EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 50D, EOS 40D, EOS 5D. On those cameras the change of the focussing screen is required to see the grid pattern in the viewfinder. However since the focussing screen is a bit different in brightness the camera needs to be told which screen is in use so it can adjust the cameras metering correctly.
On the EOS 7D for example that has an overlay it is possible to switch on or off the grid in the viewfinder. However you cannot change the focussing screen on this camera.

  • When I use the lasso background turns on the grid

    Hi
I am using Photoshop CS5 on MAC. When I use the lasso tool and after closing the selection, background turns automatically on the grid background (white and grey squares) . I cant change it back to grey solid background. Please help in solving this problem.
    WJ

I dont want to change that in preferences because the grid background is very useful when I cut out with lasso tool from a photo. I just want to turn off the grid around my photo (red outline)
    Thank you

I don’t quite follow your description but if it’s just about the display of transparent areas that can be changed in the Preferences.

here is the article on Apple.com
    article # 301733
iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor), iMac G5 (iSight): How to Reset the SMU
The SMU (System Management Unit) is a microcontroller chip on the logic board that controls all power functions for your computer. If your computer is experiencing any power issue, resetting the SMU may resolve it. The SMU controls several functions, including:
Telling the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so on.
Handling system resets from various commands.
    Controlling the fans.
Note that resetting the SMU does not reset the PRAM. Resetting the SMU will not resolve issues in which your computer is unresponsive—in these situations, restarting your computer will generally suffice. If your computer isn't responding, perform these steps one at a time, in this order, until the issue has been resolved:
    Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape).
    Restart (Control-Command-Power).
Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds).
Resetting the SMU can resolve some computer issues such as not starting up, not displaying video, sleep issues, fan noise issues, and so on. If your computer still exhibits these types of issues even after you've restarted the computer, try resetting the SMU. To reset the SMU on one of these iMacs:
Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    Wait 10 seconds.
Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
Let go of the power button.
Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
Unlike earlier iMac G5 computer models, the iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor) and iMac G5 (iSight) computers do not have a button on the main logic board for resetting the SMU. This eliminates the need to remove the computer's back cover to reset the SMU.

  • When streaming a movie from an imac to apple tv, is there a way of putting the imac display off? I find it a waste having the screen on in another room. Any advice?

    No problem.
This is a user forum so you are not addressing Apple. There's nothing to fix, that's how home-sharing works. There would be no way for the ATV to recognize your library and display content if the computer is in sleep mode.
You can always airplay from an IOS device or use icloud if you don't wish to keep the computer on.

Hello, I downloaded an ntfs systemfile from tuxera and used it to convert a usb stick so I could put more than the fat32 4gb on, my Imac froze a while after so I turned it off the on and now I have blue vertical lines on boot up and the a white screen with lots of tine blue symbols after, mouse pointer moves but thats about it.
Have used R and cmd to get a menu up but once I choose one of the four options my mouse is rendered useless and I cant get any further, have downloaded, to another usb stick recovery disk assisstant and am trying to use that in conjunction with the lion option on the previously mentioned screen, computer was responding really slowly and has now frozen on the terms of software license agreement (maybe the last hurdle!) can anyone pleeeeeease help!!!!!??????

It's likely that the boot drive is failing, or that there's some other hardware fault. Run the Apple Hardware Test.
Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test
Even if the test is negative, you should make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested more thoroughly.

  • How do you turn off the auto grid?

How do you turn off the auto grid? I read in a forum that the solution is "View- show- turn off grid". But the weird thing is I had to have that website open to even get the alternative up under "View". If I didn´t, there were other alternatives there. Why?
The second problem is, when I finally got the "Turn off auto grid" alternative up, it will not be unchecked…. I´m working on a mac.
    Thank you in advance!

  • I am getting a message in the middle of my imac screen instructing me to hold down the on-off button and turn off the machine. The message is in several foreign languages beside english, and there is not way to get rid of it. The curser is inactive.

I am getting a message in the middle of my imac screen instructing me to hold down the on-off button and turn off the computer. The message is in several languages and completely takes over the computer disabling the mouse and all other functions. The only option is to unplug the computer or turn it off. I'm concerned that this is a virus. It does not look like it's related to Apple or the imac OS.

That sounds like a kernel panic. These are generally hardware related, often caused by poorly seated or fauly RAM.
