Imac G5 on Tiger, how to buy leopard

I have an iMac G5 still running leopard.  Once Snow Leopard came out, I was unable to find Leopard for an upgrade.  Since software is starting to demand Leopard, it's beginning to be an inconvenience.  Any idea how to get a copy of Leopard.

Thank you for once again, validating my response.  I'm so glad to find that you so often agree with me.  And it's nice for the OP to et two answers saying virtually the same thing, it must be comforting to know that the responses are so much alike even though one would have sufficed.

if I upgrade to the new leopard whats chances that the QB will still run?

Sorry, but nobody here can answer that with any certainty, as nobody has Leopard yet. You'll either have to just wait and see or contact Quicken support and see what they say.

If they are the grey discs which came with the iMac, then they will be machine specific and will not work on the MBP anyway. You will need to purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard from the Apple Store for about $29 and upgrade from that. I presume your MBP is Intel and not G4.

  • When you buy Leopard does Tiger go?

When you buy Leopard and put it on your computer does it totally get rid of Tiger, so even if you don't like Leopard you can't switch back? Also how have you enjoyed using it. I have an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo made last September, also a 500gb harddrive. Thanks.

    Hey Brown,
I would highly recommend backing up your entire Mac HD to an external drive... use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a duplicate of it. Then, you can always go back if you want to. It is smart to do before installing a new OS anyway. (as you can tell by all the posts on this forum)
Leopard is working fine for me. Had a problem with incompatibility with SideTrack but that's it. It's really not THAT different from Tiger. Appearance is slightly different but not much. Spaces is a nice feature for me as I use my MacBook for work, school and home. TimeMachine seems good though with a MacBook I'm not hooked up to my external drive consistently like a desktop, so I'll need to make an effort to do that more often so I have backups.
The only two things I really don't like so far is that I can no longer download hotmail to Mail and some of the changes to iCal. But, I'll get used to them.
    Overall... I like it!

  • How can I backup my iMac with a Tiger operating system?

I have an iMac with a Tiger operating system (10.4.11). I am intending to upgrade to Snow Leopard. When I spoke to an Apple representative, he said I should back up my computer before I upgraded to Leopard and then Snow Leopard as I could lose everything during the upgrade. This version of operating system (Tiger) does not have Time Machine. Can anyone tell me how I can back up everything before I do the upgrade?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The best option is to use a third-party app. I recommend you to use Carbon Copy Cloner, but you can have a look for more applications.
You should keep all your files and applications after upgrading, but you should have a backup. Also, I think you should be able to upgrade to Snow Leopard directly without upgrading to Leopard

  • How to install Leopard in my iMac if it has no DL-DVD player?

How to install Leopard in my iMac if it has no DL-DVD player?
    My eMac is:
    eMac G4/1.25 (USB 2.0) with 2GB RAM

Most PPC Macs cannot boot OSX from USB, they need Firewire... that being said, out of 13 PPC Macs I had one that booted from USB Drives, including Flash Drives, it was my eMac/1.42GHz as a matter of fact, USB drives would show as a boot choice if I held the Option/alt key at bootup, (nowhere else), but It lost that ability when I reset the NVRAM.
The USB boot workaround that works for some is...
Connect the drive to your machine, and find out which partition the OS X system is installed on. I usually find this by going to Disk Utility and looking at the info for the partition on the USB disk with OS X. That is, disk2s3 is usually for a USB disk with no OS 9 drivers installed that is the second disk disk. disk3s9 might be a USB disk with OS 9 drivers that is considered the third disk. There are other ways of finding this out, but in my case, my disk is disk2s3 (the 3 on the end will come into play soon).
Start up the machine in Open Firmware (this is the fun part). Hold Command-Option-F-F right after the machine is turned on.
Here is the moment of truth. If this step does not work, I have had very limited success getting a machine to boot off USB2. In Open Firmware, type devalias, and you should get a list as output. In this list, look for ud, usually below where you see hd (ud is "USB Disk," I presume). If found, it will usually have beside it /pci@f2000000/usb@1/disk1, or something similar. Again, if you see this, I have not had this fail yet.
Now type printenv boot-device, which will usually get you output of boot-device hd:,\\:tbxi. (See where this is going yet?)
Type setenv boot-device ud:3,\\:tbxi where the number after the colon corresponds to that partition number we found in step two. You should get an ok back.
Type printenv boot-device, and you should see the change displayed already. Something like:
    boot-device        ud:3,\\:tbxi        hd:,\\:tbxi"

You'd need to clone the Install Disc to a Flash Drive, or make a DMG of it then Restore it to the Flash drive.

  • Migrating from iMac G5 (Tiger) to Macbook Pro (Leopard) over a network

I just got my new Macbook (running Leopard) and trying to migrate all my files/settings from my iMac over (running Tiger). The instructions tell me to use Migration Assistant.
On new Mac, I open Migration Assistant and select migrate "From other Mac". I am doing this over network so a 6 digit code was provided. It then instructs me to power on my old Mac, ensure latest OS X software is updated (10.4.11), open Migration Assistant and select migrate "To another Mac".
Here's where I am stuck. On my old Mac, there is no "To another Mac" option to select.. thus I am not given a chance to input the 6 digit code to connect the 2 computers.
Is the problem to do with my old Mac being an older version, thus it's Migration Assistant application is also older and does not support a migrate "to another mac" option?

Migration Assistant does not work well for migrating from a Power PC machine to an Intel Machine. Try this instead:

  • Gratuitous kernel panic on my iMac G3 running Tiger. How can I prevent this

Ok, I know I probably shouldn't have installed Tiger on my G3 iMac so you don't need to remind me. However, it runs pretty good and I hardly ever even see the beachball spinning when I ask it to do something. What I am shocked, shocked by is the ridiculous amount of frequency that I end up with a kernel panic that gives me the 'gray screen' telling me I have to restart my Mac. I have been able to keep this down to a minimum by pointedly only running programs and commands one at a time with a good sized pause in between but even with that I am diappointed with how often it happens. Call me a heretic, but I think it would have killed Apple to stick with their classic OS framework rather than go to UNIX. I would like some tips about things I could do to minimize this occurence above what I already do. It really ***** to have had to reinstall Tiger about 3 or 4 times since I upgraded and have to change up the screen position, dock, desktop, mouse, screen saver, and reinstall all my programs after my iMac has croaked and finally accepted another reload of Tiger.

I'll ignore the major portion of your post which comes across as a rant and try to stick with the title: "kernel panic on my iMac G3 running Tiger. How can I prevent this?"
Kernel panics are usually caused by bad or marginal RAM or RAM that isn't seated properly, or by buggy or damaged software or drivers. In the past, problems with marginal RAM for Macs has shown up when people upgraded to new versions of the OS -- which might fit your situation.
Although your CPU is slow, you have lots of RAM, so Tiger should run OK, if the RAM is not defective. You don't mention how much free space you have on your hard drive. Typically you're going to need at least 5 Gig free to give Tiger breathing room.
Running a system maintenance utility like Yasu would probably also be beneficial:
    http://jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/
What does the hardware test for your Mac say about your system? This might help us determine if there is a hardware cause for the kernel panics.

  • I've got tiger and I want to buy snow leopard for it. should I do it or buy leopard instead?

I've got tiger and I want to buy snow leopard for it. should I do it or buy leopard instead?

The only operating system you can upgrade to is OS X 10.5 Leopard. Snow Leopard requires an Intel processor, which the Powerbooks don't have. I confirmed the other day that you can still buy Leopard from the US online Apple store at 800-MY-APPLE.
Before you update, be sure you download any updates to non-Apple software that may be needed to run under Leopard.

  • Is it possible to upgrade from Tiger (10.4) to Leopard (10.5)? Thanks

Wondering if I can upgrade from TIger to Leopard (and then to Lion) on my old Macbook. Don't really want to buy a new notebook when this one works fine. But would like to use some of the features available through Lion (notably iCloud). Thanks.

    Hello Judy,
You'd want to skip Leopard/10.5.x totally as it's not needed & expensive since Apple no longer sells it & it was $129.
You can get Snow Leopard/10.6 for $29, then once updated to 10.6.6 or greater buy Lion/10.7 from the App Store, as long as your MacBook meets the requiremenys...
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory[14]
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading[14]
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

  • Tiger disk apps from Leopard?

    Hi!
I'm new to Macs. Just got a new iMac. It was still with Tiger and iLife preinstalled. Have tried to upgrade Leopard today. Ended with a password problem. Tried a lot from forums.. nothing helped. (btw may be there's at last a working solution?)
Anyway I'm ready to install a fresh copy (since my docs r on external drive). The question is, will I be able to install me-gifted iLife from my iMac Tiger disk, from a Leopard??
    thanx!

How do I find/reinstall iPhoto and from where - Tiger apps or Leopard upgrade disk?
Reinstall it from the disks which came with the computer or the iLife disk if you bought it separately.
Is there any risk to reinstalling iPhoto and having it erase my existing iPhoto Library?
    No.

  • FAQ on how to reinstall Leopard?

I've been having FCS 2 woes ever since I got my Mac Pro and a clean reinstall was suggested. I did archive reinstall and was told it can destroy frameworks. Do I just follow the erase and reinstall on my DVDs or are there other things I can do to enhance performance? thanks.

There's no need to install Tiger first unless your Leopard disk is an upgrade disk and not a retail disk. Or you could just buy Snow Leopard. You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 as long as you have at least1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does startup, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. (The usual setting is one partition.) Click on the Options button after you've selected apartition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility. You can now follow the instructions on the install screen

I have a voice memo that's 1.5 hrs long saved on my computer that I used to be able to play in iTunes & Quicktime, but ever since I upgraded from Tiger OS to Snow Leopard OS, the file will not play anymore. When I try to open the file in quicktime it says that it can't play the file and that it is not a movie file, but my file is saved as a ".mov" file. Does anyone know how I can get the file to play again?
