My iMac kernel panics when backing up via WIFI
Scenario: my iMac, running 10.8.4 (latest version) backing up via WIFI over Wireless N, kernel panics and crashes on initial backup.
I upgraded my router to go Wireless AC. I purchased a 4TB WD My Book to go with it.
I was using the standard Verizon ActionTec and an 1TB iomega NAS drive attaced via ethernet to the ActionTec. Time Machine worked fine with that scenario, however, the 1TB was becoming too small for my needs and I wanted to segregate my network.
Moving to AirPort Extreme and a 4TB MyBook was a great solution. On page 13 of the AirPort Extreme manual, it indicates this is an acceptable configuration.
On the WIFI backup, the iMac kernel panics and crashes. Here is the error message:
panic (cpu 3 caller 0xffffff80272f3458): "hfs_swap_HFSPlusBTInternalNode: attr inline #21 too big (attrSize=2097202)\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2050.24.15/bsd/hfs/hfs_endian.c:822
My Apple Support rep told me to ethernet the iMac to the Extreme for the initial backup. I did that and the backup worked, with out crashing.
Then I added some files to the iMac and did an incremental Time Machine Backup.
Recall that with the ActionTec/iomega, I had no such issues. So I attached the iomega to the AirPort Extreme and attempted an initial backup.
My iMac kernel paniced and crashed. It's either the AirPort Extreme or the iMac with the issue. Or the marriage of the two.
Any ideas? If you have the iSight model G5, you cannot self repair the insides/remove the HD (will void your warranty/AppleCare). You will need to take the computer to your local AASP for a professional to remove.
Which "model" & generation G5 iMac do you have?

IMac kernel panic -- rule out hardware and software! any ideas?
Greetings forum
I am totally at a loss on what to do next. Im writing about a mid 2010 27 inch iMac recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. Shortly after this the computer started to experience issues of rebooting itself as clicking apps such as safari. So began the troubleshooting process!
First tried clean install -- ie format HD and internet recover install
everything installed fine and then restart issue again as it experience kernel panic
ruling out the Software I was convinced it was a memory hardware issue so I booked appt at genius bar and took it in-- the computer was there for 4 days and the tech said they did extensive testing and could find nothing wrong with the hardware tests!! and they had no advice other than to try a fresh install (again)
I took it home and let it sit for a couple of months as I didnt want to bother with it right away
So I pulled it out again yesterday and decided to do a fresh install after format -- again within 5 min in kernel panicd! This time i think I was searching in safari. BELOW is the crash report
I also decided to load up the diagnostic tool off my iMac disk to test hardware (did the extended test TWICE) and NO TROUBLE FOUND (see photo)

Brand new iMac, kernel panics
I've got a brand new iMac, which frequently crashes, and blames the kernel_task, coreaudiod, FileStatsAgent, PluginProcess or Rome Total War.
I've included the most recent kernel panic.
I've run the dianostics, which came back clea, no issues ( Does this mean I'm out of the woods regarding hardware issues? ).
Any help appreciated.

Thunderbolt Bus: iMac, Apple Inc., 23.10Did this happen before 10.9.2? I have been having issues since 10.9.2 on my Early 2011 MBP and was able to definitively narrow it down to apple's graphics driver logic.
How did I come to this conclusion?
- Boot from my carbon copy cloner bootable backup and open an app that requires the discrete GPU (photoshop), gfxCardStatus indicates discrete GPU activated. Result: No problem
- Boot OS X without any startup items (If you have a problem with the automatic resume launching a discrete GPU requiring app before you get to quit .....hold SHIFT immediately after you start logging in)
- Open the same app under 10.9.2. Result : Screen flashes, gfxCardStatus indicates discrete active, OS X logs me out.
- Install standalone 10.9.2 package. Repeat steps. Result: SAME
- Create new account (in case it has to do with something I am not seeing). Repeat steps. Result: immediate logout (no extensions active etc on the new account)
So now i have a ton of kernel panics and crash reports from the window server from repeatedly testing different variations of my hypothesis. Conclusion: issue with automatic graphics swicthing.
So what I'm saying is it is possible that you do not have a hardware problem, but was just unlucky enough to get an iMac /w 10.9.2 on it. If that's the case then I would just recommend holding off for a lil 'till a fix is released. -
My iMac has panic issues, need help.
I've got an iMac 4,1 and it's panicking in a bad way. It's not used for whole lot, just email, web, and printer sharing. The thing won't boot sometimes and I'm forced to leave it on. It only panics on boot. Sometimes when going into Safe Boot, but what perplexes me even more is it happens in Single User Mode. I'm not able to type any commands. Just get a screen showing me the panic info. As of tonight it's happened about 6 times but I'm writing this now on it. For some miracle it decided to behave. I've got two logs it managed to keep after all this.

I think it might be a problem with a core function of apple since I don't see any extensions that stand out as third party ones. I'm currently running Snow Leopard on this aging thing and numerous components have kicked the bucket. Slot drive removed and iSight disconnected. I've run out of ideas, gentleman and ladies. You could have a hardware issue, which could be RAM or something like a failing HD. I'd start by running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode 3x back to back. If you get an error then it's time to take it in for repair. If you have no errors appear that doesn't necessarily mean there isn't a hardware issue, unfortunately AHT isn't that great a test but it's what you have. You can also try trouble shooting RAM, this could be:
incorrect RAM
Failed RAM
Unseated RAM
You can download Rember from macupdate.com and see if it finds any RAM errors. -
Late 2013 iMac kernel panics and logging me out
I have already followed up with Apple Support so I have a case open for this, but in case the hive mind here was ahead of the problem I figured I would post the issue here too.
I have a 2 day old iMac (1TB Flash, 32GB RAM - not 3rd party, 10.9.1) that has kernel paniced twice and repeatedly logged me out in the short time I've had it. I've verified the drive, repaired permissions, done the hardware diagnostics test, and on suggestion from Apple Support, re-installed the OS (not a clean install, just a re-install). None of the tests resulted in any anolomalies.
Overnight it appears that there was something called a "shutdownStall" that was tied to multiple processes, if that adds anything as I've never heard of that fault before: "AdobeIPCBroker,Core Sync,dbfseventsd,FMCore_2014-02-02-003807_Richards-iMac.shutdownStall
But on the last forced log out (a few minutes ago) it appears that WindowServer crashed while I was using Safari. I am including the System Diagnostic Report for that crash here in case someone with more technical skills at deciphering these can make some sense of it:

Best I can think is that there is something up with the graphics card or Mavericks handling of the graphics card or some settting related to graphics judging from the code, but that is me talking out of my nethers...
Any additional thoughts?
TIA!I'm suddenly having the same issue on my Late 2013 27" iMac that I purchased in November Richard. I see that no one has responded to your post but I wanted to subscribe to this thread in case you or anyone else may have learned any more about this.
You mentioned that you had a ticket open with Apple Care. Did anything come of that?
I put my iMac to sleep a couple of hours ago and when I returned it was still powered up but completely unresponsive. I noticed that it was pretty warm when I rebooted it. iStat Menus showed the SSD at 50c and the GPU at 48c. There were no applications open previously, nothing at all running so I'm not sure what to think.
I reset the SMC but no changes and the SSD is still running very hot while the GPU has cooled.
I'll keep searching for some answers and open a ticket if needed, but I wanted to see if you had gotten any further with this.
TIA!
P.S. Maybe it's our name? -

17" Intel iMac Kernel Panic, Freezing at Grey Screen and Beeping!
Hi there,
I have a new 17" Intel iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 250 GB, 1GB Memory with OS X 10.4.8) that keeps getting those "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." messages.
It all started on Sunday when I tried to wake the computer (the computer went on Sleep by itself) and got that message so I restarted the computer but it froze on the grey screen (even before I got the Apple) and it beeped 3 times and then the light on front just kept blinking 3 times. I finally was able to erase and re-install OS X and everything was fine until I left the computer for a while, it went to sleep again, and then the message came back. I restarted and it seems to be fine but I'm worried the beeping and freezing will come back.
The first time this happened, I didn't know enough to "log" the kernel panics but I do know that I deleted a lot of the applications (iWeb, Garage Band, etc.) that I didn't need and fidged with the Share folder in the Users folder. I use a Flash Drive a lot and always left it connected to the keyboard's USB drive. Also leave my iPod Nano connected. After I reinstalled everything, I only deleted the Garage Band demos, installed and deleted the Firefox 2.0 and Opera (wanted to just stick with Firefox 1.0) applications. Only used the Flash Drive a little and haven't connected my iPod on yet. Trying to isolate the problem. I can't remember doing anything else.
Here's the log from the latest kernel panic:

I don't know what this part is about because I don't have a Printer hooked up to the computer.
The only other thing I can think of is I also installed WireTap and StuffIt before the initial crashing. I heard StuffIt was causing problems on some Intel Macs. Also changed a lot of the icons and changed the icon for Preview. I "verified" my hard drive and "verified and repaired the disk permissions" (I'm not that knowledgeable about computers let alone Macs). I also checked my hardware by pressing D while the grey CD OS X was running and get this:
4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040
usually during the initial testing but when I restart and try it again, it's fine.
Well, that's all I can think of. Any thoughts?
Thanks a lot!
-KimThanks for the reply and links!
After the first problems, I re-seated the RAMs. Does this mean I have to buy new memory? This is a pretty new iMac, bought it in May and have only been using it for maybe two months. Haven't done a whole lot with it but I usually keep a lot of programs open at the same time. I have Adobe CS3 installed too and it says it needs at least 1 GB of memory. I've heard people saying it's best to have as much RAM (this Mac can only take up to 3GB) when using those programs. Maybe it's getting too heavy? Should I only keep one program open at a time? Also, which part of my post indicated that it was memory problems? What the "panic.log" stated or that "4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040" stuff? Anything else I can do to not let this happen again?
Thanks again! -
Indigo iMac 500 Panics when booted from a Firewire drive
Hi all,
I have an iMac 500 Indigo and am trying to upgrade i to osx as other in this computer lab. I have been provided with a FireWire drive with a bootup of Tiger and a Panther disk image. Out of 32 computers here only three have ceaced to work. They are all the same 384 MB of RAM I have tried to a restore in FW Target Disk mode with no luck I am now trying to copy the files via classic probibly in vain. So back to the error, I see the computer in the UNIX bootup stage for a few (the grey apple with the progress indicator.) and then I get a Panic written directly to the screen over top of the graphic indicator as seen on older versions of OSX (10.0 10.01 or so)
Thanks
SeanThe firmware update is a good suggestion to check.
Here's another thing. You say you have been "provided with" an external firewire drive with Tiger on it. How was that Tiger OS installed on that firewire drive? If it was done on a computer that is not identical to your iMac, then it very well will not be able to boot your iMac. When you install Tiger or Panther or any version of Mac OS X, what is actually installed is a custom version of OS X that is tailored to the specific model of computer you are running at the time. So if the firewire drive has a Mac OS X that was installed, say from a G5, then that drive MIGHT only be able to properly boot that model of G5. It MIGHT be able to boot a G4 or a G3, but I think the odds are against that.
The reliable way to install OS X is from an OS X CD that is the commercially sold boxed version (not the installation CD that comes with a specific model of Macintosh, and not a firewire drive that has OS X from some other model of Macintosh). -

IMac Kernal Panicing CONSTANTLY
I bought my iMac August 2011. Between buying it and now, it has Kernal Paniced constantly despite having had a whole new hard drive, thousands of conversations and hours on the phone with Apple support to try various tests and now yet again I am taking it to an Apple recognised service and maintenance centre to have it looked at and ultimately all wiped AGAIN. It also loses wireless connection to the mouse and the keyboard, freezes, closes programmes down at its own will, doesnt come on sometimes, and now I have had it!
Anyone else had repeating Kernal Panics with their iMAC and if so, what did you do, did it resolve or did you get a new one altogether?Without a kernel panic report to review, all I can suggest is for you to peruse

Thunderbolt iMac Kernel Panics on Wireless
We are a school and we ordered many of the new Thunderbolt iMacs. What happens is every time we turn the wireless Airport on it Kernel Panics. We get this error.

Any thoughts?

Did a complete fresh install with the disc it comes with, even did a fresh LION install, same issue. Turns an expensive computer into a boat anchor. It sounds like you got a bunch of Macs either with bad RAM, or a misinstalled Airport card. Call AppleCare. Your machine has a one year warranty which can be extended to 3 years from date of computer's purchase anytime during the first year from date of purchase with a registration of AppleCare. Kernel panics typically indicate a hardware issue, or a bad driver, or a directory issue somewhere. When it happens to a batch of similar machines on an erase and install, it most often is a hardware issue. Sometimes it might mean the wireless router is incompatible and needs a firmware update. This is especially true of non-Apple wireless routers.

My iMac is one year old and has worked fine but two days ago my iMac G5 (w/ iSight) started crashing and the kernel panic message comes up. So when I force restart I get to the log on screen and then the mouse freezes. Sometimes, I am able to log on but then about 5 minutes later the mouse will freeze again. This has been an endless cycle for these past two days. Luckily, I am using my iMac G4.
I tried resetting the PRAM and PMU, but it didn't work.
I tried installing the 10.4.9 combo but it didn't work either.
My computer doesn't fall under the repair extension program.
I don't know what the problem is :[Hi
I am not sure if this is where I should put this, but, looked up kernel panics - yours is the most recent one! I had one today, and had not had one for years...
So - here it goes - I'll copy and paste...
I haven’t had a kernel panic for years – but today I did.
Here’s what happened:
On the internet at the school where I work. Just had Mail open – nothing else. Went to shut down, and the panic thing showed. I pushed and held restart, and it just shut down, and did not restart.
When I got home tonight, it started, said that OSX had quit unexpectedly – and I had the choice to report or not. I clicked report, but nothing happened. So I am posting this as suggested in Mac OS X: How to Log a Kernel Panic
Thanks.

IMac kernel panics happen once a week
Hi:
I have an iMac with OSX 10.9.5 installed. After I've installed RAM from OWC I am getting kernel panics once per week...I did check the memory in single user mode with memtest and no errors were found (so I suppose it is not a memory issue). The process responsible for the panic is changing:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Skype (After this I've removed Skype, but a week later I got another kernel panic)
Now it is:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: ARM
So my question is what is ARM?
ThanksThank you for your answer.
But the periodicity of recurrence of the panics seems to indicate some weirdness, every 7 days....
Please, see the screenshot
The thing is that I already gave away my old memory to a colleague. And changing back means going from 16gb to 4gb for a week at least... And since I've never had kernel panics with the previous memory I think I won't see it. I want to eliminate all the other issues before sending the memory back for replacement (because it isa work computer), and OWC does not do avance replacements for Canada...
Thanks -
Cause of Late 2013 Imac Kernel Panic
I have just got home from work to find my imac in a cycle of kernel panics. I have tried entering safe mode by holding the shift key when booting up with no luck (I'm using the apple wireless keyboard and there is no startup chime so I am waiting for a second or two).I would be grateful if anyone could diagnose the problem from this log and give me any adive to get back up and running:

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

2.1ghz iMac Kernel Panics and no CD startup
Just got my Refurb iMac G5. Its 2.1ghz, the iSight model. I chose the Apple Certified Refurb because I work alot with Adobe Creative suite and heard that it wouldnt be UB for at least 2 years by which time I will have a new system.
Anyhow, I bought a 1gb Samsung memory stick from OWC and have been getting Kernel Panics(6 in the last two days). Funny thing is, even when I removed the memory stick I still get the KP's. Secondly, my iMac will not strtup from the Applecare CD. I just get the gray screen with the circle slash through it.
Back to the memory, I ran Disk Utility while booted from the startup disk and it showed a catalog error which Disk Utility could not repair, even when booted from the OSX install DVD. During this time period some crazy stuff was happenning, the computer would NOT startup at all, from strtup disk or cd drive. It wouldget to the Apple logo with the progress spinner under it and then just go black and shut off. It did this probably 15 out of 20 times during an hour. I then got it to finally start up by booting into the black screen with white type (forget hat it is called, single user or verbose or safe...?) ran fsck -f, which showed the same catalog error as before and said it still couldn't fix it. Finally got it to start up; So, I backed up all my files and zeroed out the whole 250gb drive and reinstalled OSX, ran all the Software Updates to get to 10.4.7 and am still getting Kernel Panics, and it still wont start up from the AppleCare cd.
My questions are:
I thought Samsung memory was Apple approved, what should I put in this iMac?
Is there a known issue with 10.4.7 and iMac G5's with KP's?
BTW, I ran Apple hardware test( the LONG one) and everything passed, even the RAM.
Disk Utility now shows a verified and "ok" drive when I test it now; yet still I get KP's
Thanks for any help, sorry for the long post but I wanted to assure clarity in my situation.
offtopic- When I tried to enroll my iMac for my Apple care it told me I need to call Apple, any idea why? I bought the iMac and the Applecare on the same invoice.Hi swizcore, welcome to Discussions. Do you have any USB or Firewire devices connected to your Imac? These can sometime cause problem start ups. Try if possible to disconnect all but the USB keyboard and mouse and restart.
As for memory most brands of RAM will work, more important is it the correct RAM for your Imac. The fact that you removed it and all that was in the Imac was apple (Hardwired RAM I beleive with iSights) I don't think it would be the problem YET
I would definately be getting a hold of Apple ASAP this should not be happening and at the same time you can get the Apple care registered.
Good luck and post back with results or if they don't find the problem. Bob :~))
