Imac G5/PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-K04L - suddenly spitting DVDs?  Help!

Hello,
I have looked at the other threads on this and nothing really matches this:
1. It used to work about month ago.
2. CDs are ok.
3. DVDs go in, about 10 secs, come back out.
4. Same DVDs work fine on my PowerBook.
I've tried resetting PRAM in case that worked.
Any ideas gratefully received.
Bought in May 2005 so well out of warranty.
Many thanks for your help,
John

  • Reasonably new PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D will NOT RECOGNIZE CD's

I bought a new PIONEER DVR-111D drive to replace my old superdrive about 5-6 months ago.
All was fine and good until about 2 weeks ago when it was suddenly unable to recognize CD's. Audio CD's, blank CD's, my highly valued "must insert to play" Halo CD, etc...
I noted this problem originally when trying to burn a playlist on a CD and Toast would pop out an error message about "Wrong Media Type". They worked fine before. This only happens on CD's (and yes, I tried a few different brands) - not DVD's.
    DVD's (Dual Layer & -R & +R) read/write/burn fine.
But when I put a CD in the tray and close it, out spits out the disc (and I've tried several different types) about 20 seconds later.
I've tried every option I could find to fix this issue including...
    http://www.macworld.com/forums/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=440595&Main= 439419
(trashing com.apple.kernelcaches, trashing Extensions.kextcache and when those suggestiosn didn't work, trashing ~Home/Library/Preferences/CD Info.cidb - all to no avail)
I've uninstalled and then reinstalled Patchburn. Didn't work.
I used Preferential Treatment to fix my User Prefs and System Prefs.
    Doesn't help.
Now Toast hangs whenever I try and insert a CD while its running - but when I use Toast's "Recorder Settings" to identify the drive it says CD-RW Yes and CD-R Yes.
I really can't understand why this is happening. Isn't the laser that writes to DVD's the same as the one for CD's? If so, where is this "recognition" issue (can't recognize CD's but has no problem with DVD's) happening?
Here's the System Info for this drive:

    Manufacturer: PIONEER
    Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D

I'd be very grateful for any help on this issue.

    Hi-
There are two separate laser/laser lens for each of CD and DVD media. You could have lost the CD side. Could also be a blob of dust in the way.
Could try cleaning, or, try and get warranty replacement.

  • Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K05 superdrive can't erase or burn DVD-RW

I've noticed lots of users are having issues with their slot-loading superdrives and I'm wondering if anyone's issue matches this one:
I can successfully read and write: CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-DL and can READ an already burned DVD-RW, but I can't erase a DVD-RW that's already burned nor can I burn a blank DVD-RW. Inserting a blank DVD-RW results in ejecting the disc after about 30 seconds, no error messages, just ejects.
I've tried Maxell DVD-RW and Memorex DVD-RW. Same results.
An already burned DVD-RW (from a different burner) mounts fine on the desktop, but when I try to erase using Toast 7, I get the following message:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
    Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
It recognizes that it's a DVD-RW, but treats it as though it were a DVD-R.
Using Disk Utility to erase results in a more generic error message:
Optical Erase failed with the error:
    Optical Erase Failed
I had an online chat with an Apple rep who had me reset the PRAM, no change. Then we tried from another account, no change. Their next recommendation was to re-install the OS using Archive and Install, which I have my doubts about doing. Failing that, they recommend bringing the iMac in to a service store to possibly replace the drive. But based on what I've been reading about all the different superdrive problems users are having, I'm reluctant to even do that for fear of having an even worse problem with a different drive crop up at some point.
Has anyone out there had this exact problem and found a solution yet?
Seems like a simple firmware update for the drive could fix everything but I'm unable to find one.
Here's the drive specs from the Apple System Profiler:

    hi there--
instead of just resetting pram i would try booting to
open firmware holding apple-option-o-f and then type
    in the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command restarts the computer. see if that
works. if it doesn't then try resetting the smu.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733
there is a remote possibility that this is software
related, but it almost never is, and these things
are much more likely to resolve your problem than
doing an archive and install, and they are much less
hassle free. let me know if that works. [ 8 ) ]
OK, I booted into open firmware and did all the resets. No improvement. In fact, now I can't even mount some DVD-Rs that I had successfully burned before and mounted before. The drive has always been a little touchy with some discs, especially DVDs, but now seems to be even more hit-and-miss. CD-R and CD-RW reliably mount but DVDs have me worried. It took a long time for my OS X install disc to mount and display the window.
I think it may be time to take it in to Apple and replace it. I may also consider purchasing a Firewire burner with a tray!
Just wondering also if PatchBurn would fix this by creating a new profile or if this truly is a hardware issue. http://www.patchburn.de/
    Thanks for your help.

  • Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K06 replacement drive needed

My iMac started having problem ejecting DVD/CDs and now the drive is damaged. I need to find a replacement drive (AppleCare expired). I know there are 2 possible types of superdrives were used on the late 2006 24" iMac. One is with a 12.7mm slot and the other one is 9.5mm. I am not sure which one I should get but here is my specs. I think the DVR-K0-6 is discontinued. Could someone tell me what replacement drive I can use? thx CK

  • PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K05 won't burn dvd+-r/w or cd-r

I've read a bunch of posts from people with similar problems and am concerned...brand new 20" imac with 2GB of RAM and following superdrive specs:
    Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K05
    Revision: Q523
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
I have tried many types of media and all have failed...used both burn folder and toast...burn folder has given me the following errors when burning to a Sony DVD+R media:
    error code 0x80020022
    and
    error code 0x8002006D
get this error when burning to Maxell CD-R:
    error code 0x8002006E
I've used these on my previous G4 with upgraded Pioneer Superdrive and had no problem. Is this a warranty issue?

reset the pram and nvram. tried burning from both toast and burn folder...more pricey dvd+r coasters.
created a new user and tried to burn from that. still nothing.
i have transferred 200 GB of data to this computer from my old one (which is severely damaged) and can't back it up now, without purchasing a whole new external drive, as i'm guessing i'll have to send this back...just throwing money away on this. thanks apple.

  • EMac optical drive: Reads but ceased writing.  I get "Sense key=MEDIUM ERROR, Sense Code=0x0C, WRITE ERROR.  Drive is Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-127D.

eMac optical drive: reads fine but has ceased writing.  One day it's working fine, burning DVDs, then after repeated attempts stops copying and gives the following error message:  "Sense key=MEDIUM ERROR, Sense Code=0x0C, WRITE ERROR".  Drive is Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-127D.  Is this a software issue or is the drive half dead?  Get the same result with either Popcorn or Toast 10.

Are you using Roxio Toast? That error seems to be discussed a lot in the Roxio forums. Scroll down this thread:

The new user account didn't work?
Or, the firmware flash didn't work?
I would try reconnecting the data ribbon. It is cramped and difficult to get to, but it may be some corrosion or a poor connection causing the issue.
It's worth a try, as the DVR-115 is a good drive. They don't make them any more........

I am trying to burn an album from iPhoto '09 and I receive the following error message:
The burn to the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06A drive failed. Verifying the burned data failed.
I have attempted 3 different times using the same media that worked prior to my upgrade to Snow Leopard. Prior to the upgrade I didn't have any problems.

  • The burn to the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06A drive failed?

I was wondering if anyone ever found a solution to this problem? This is the error message I get when I try to burn a DVD in iPhoto.
"The burn to the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06A drive failed. The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry."
I am trying to back up all my photos in iPhoto to DVD. I am using iPhoto 11 and I currently run Mac OS X 10.6.8. I made about 10 DVD copies earlier before this problem started without any problems. Now I get this message all the time. I tried burning a movie DVD in iDVD and it worked with no problem so I do not think the DVD burner is defective. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Pioneer DVD -RW drive will not load CD/DVD media iMac Yosemite

I have a 20-inch, Early 2009 iMac that was recently updated with a SSD Drive and I ran all the installation media that cam with it originally.
I did update to the latest and greatest Mac OS Yosemite to recently discover that the Pioneer drive (see details below) will not load disks. Any disks. It makes that loading noise and it seems to struggle until it spits it out again.
I am pretty sure it worked since I have loaded Software from the Installation DVDs but I cannot confirm the if the problem started since Yosemite update. There may be a separate contributing factor, he is 2 year old and since he has seen Music CDs loaded there previously he was showing interest in poking thinks in the slot.
How can I identify the real problem? Is the drive faulty or is it some incompatibility with the system?

Put the DVD back in your Windows system and make sure the disk is finalized.  Then it should be readable on your Mac.

  • Does anyone else have a problem with PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-K06?

It seems that my pioneer DVD drive ate my disc and no matter what I do, I can't get it out.  I only had this mac for about 6 years.  Is there any way of getting the disc out of the drive.  If not, how hard is it to take the iMac apart?  Help from anyone.  What is a good replacement for it?

What have you done so far?  Provide details on what you have done to date in the way of troubleshooting and the results.  In doing so, the helpers here will avoid the "been there done that" response scenerio.
Have you tried any of the suggestions mentioned in this thread:  The Stuck CD/DVD Thread
how hard is it to take the iMac apart?
If your model iMac is not user repairable, do a Google search for DIY instructions.  Two places to start is iFixit and YouTube's tutorials.
What is a good replacement for it?
External CD/DVD burners.  Check out OWC & Lacie websites for CD/DVD drives.  Make sure you read the system requirements for the drives.

  • New pioneer dvd drive, can i use to install tiger or is it a catch-22?

what i am concerned about is a catch-22 type situation. i recently bought a pioneer dvd-110. currently i am on os 10.3.8. so i installed the verison of patchburn i needed for 10.3.8. (there are also versions of patchburn for jaguar and tiger as well). a few tests confirmed my drive can play cds, burn dvds of backup files, etc. here's the possible problem: if i use this dvd drive to install tiger off the cd, at some point when tiger is on my system and it's going thru the last few installation procedures, will my dvd drive suddenly stop working since my G5 would haveh tiger on it at that point but the patchburn version is for panther??? i think i have heard about folks using the pioneer dvd-110 without patchburn and everything still worked fine for apple apps. but has anyone tried this sequence of events with this particular dvd drive? maybe i am worrying about nothing. thanks so much for your help!

Why Patchburn is not necesary with 10.4.4? I still
can see unsupported in system info...
I'm not using Patchburn under 10.4.4 with my DVR-110D, and it also shows as unsupported. It burns just fine, though.

    Dear Pasinik,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Check the status of the optical drive in System Profiler
Go T Blue Apple > About this Mac > More info > System profiler > ATA > ATA Bus (the optical one). See the status if everything for the optical drive is showing up. Re-seat the optical drive cable.
The DVD is not able to recognize media. You can first check this by going to Disk utility. Which is under HDD > Applications > Utilities > disk utility
In disk utility do you see the DVD /CD disk which you want to mount. If so then select that disk and click on the button mount to mount the disk.
Best test will be with the original install OS X disk.
If the above steps fails then
1.Restart the unit holding apple-option-p-r and wait for 2 startup chime after that release the keys and let it boot.
2.Then reset the NVRAM :Follow article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42642
3.Reset the PMU once (refer the manual that came along with the unit)
Check if you are able to mount DVD/CD from disk utility.
If you are still not able to then enable root user and check
To enable root user follow the article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106290
If in the root user the optical drive is not mounting in disk utility then take the unit to Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    Hope this helps.
    Good Day!
    Ravi Dimri.
