IMac G5 (PowerPC) - roaring fan

As part of an attempt to correct some freezing/hanging problems after the 10.4.9 update, I restarted holding down command-s and ran fsck -fy from the command line. Upon entering command-line mode, my fan started roaring....and it hasn't stopped all morning.
This is troubling, as the last time it happened it was related to a logic board problem ... Any ideas?

Have you tried resetting your SMU? That may cure your problem.

    • Roaring fans
    • No progress (at least for 20 min)
Starting from an external hard disk. Keeping alt down during start-up. Works nicely.
Selecting it as start disk - works OK

  • IMac G5 PowerPC won't start - any ideas?

My iMac G5 PowerPC won't start - the initial chime will sound, but nothing appears on the screen. After about 10 seconds the fan starts to run at a very high speed. The "on" light does not come on. To shut it down I hold control, open-apple, and press the start button.
Obviously, I am going to have to take it somewhere for a repair estimate but I would like to have some idea of what may be wrong.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Before we become too gloomy, first try re-setting the SMU. Very simple procedure. The chime is a bit of good news, but this could be the power supply, the logic board or both.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767?viewlocale=en_US
If this is a non-iSight model, you can take the back off (three captive screws at bottom; don't unscrew them too far, just enough to get the back loose.) Very easy to do. Then follow this procedure to see what the LED lights are saying about what might be wrong.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2173
Also, look for swollen, or leaking capacitors on the board. They are numerous, little metal cans about 3/4 inch tall. Inspect for perfectly flat, not rounded, tops.

  • IMac G5 (PowerPC) won't turn on

    Hi there,
My old iMac G5 (PowerPC) won't turn on. Its been having problems for about a month where it would randomly turn off (not shut down, but completely turn off). It would also take about 3 or 4 tries before it would start up. Now I can't even get the computer to turn on at all.
I've created a bootable start up disk, but that's essentially useless until I can get the computer to power up.
I've tried unplugging all peripherals and unplugging the power cord for 10 secs then starting up while holding the ON button on the back. It starts up for 1 sec, then cuts out again.
I've taken a look at the logic board. There are no bad caps.
Could it be some bad RAM? Could that prevent my computer starting up?
    Does anyone have any advice?
    Thanks!!

Add another IMac G5 to the dead. The only thing that happens with this system is LED 1 is green but LEDs 2,3,4 are all dark. There is no fan, no hard drive noise, no flash of light. Caps physically appear intact in both PS and Logic board. Hard drive removed, DVD drive removed, RAM reseated, switch checks out ok on an ohmmeter check. There is voltage across the power switch contacts but no reaction at all from the computer when the switch is closed. CMOS battery checks good with proper voltage.
I had two other systems that have bad caps, one in the PS and the other in the logic board. These were mixed to give me one good system and the other with both bad PS and LB. I have replacement caps to try to bring the salvaged system back to life but this third, totally dead system has no indications of what might be happening. Pushing both internal switches on the logic board, with AC attached and not attached, has no effect. All the standard key combos (Terminal, Single User, Safe Boot, Command X etc.) has no effect.
Anyone have a guess or suggestion?

  • Installing Leopard on an iMac G5 PowerPC

I just installed a new 160GB HD and 2GB RAM on my dad's old 17' iMac G5 PowerPC.
I get to the install phase and the machine starts to install the OSX BUT after some time it hangs at about "18 min left" and then says "you need to restart your computer". During this time the fan is going like crazy..... I restart the iMac and try again but the same thing happens. I then decided to runt the disc utilities to see if the HD verifies, and it does. Any ideas???? Sounds like it is overheating while installing the OS.
I even brought it outside in the cold (it is 20 deg here in the Boston area) to see of the same thing happens.... but the same thing happened.
The previous 75GB HD did install the same OS witout problems, I just decided to upgrade to 160GB.

What are you using as an install disc? Hopefully it is either the one that came with the machine, or a retail copy of Leopard.

  • I have an iMAC G5 PowerPC (not Intel) running10.5.8.  I sync my iphone to iTunes - but just learned I must have Snow Leopard to do so.   Yet I can't install Snow Leopard as the G5 is not Intel.   What do I do?  How do I move music

I have an iMAC G5 PowerPC (not Intel) running10.5.8.  I sync my iphone to iTunes - but just learned I must have Snow Leopard to do so for my new iPhone 5S.     Yet I can't install Snow Leopard as the G5 is not Intel.   What do I do?  How do I move music and pics?  And keep them synced up as I purchase more?

Sorry, but that is correct. You need Snow Leopard to sync your phone and the latest version of iTunes and you old G5 cannot run that.

  • I have an iMac G4 PowerPC with OS 10.5.? The OS10.5.8 update failed. Now get blue screen and error-can't find Intel Power Manager. What now??

I have an iMac G4 PowerPC with OS 10.5.? After deleting 17G of music files to make room on the 74G drive, The iPhoto and iWeb updates seemed to load okay, but the OS 10.5.8 update failed - message opened said the computer encountered an error and must shut down. Now I get the blue screen. Startup with 'V' pressed shows multiple lines saying: error-can't find IntelCPU Power Manager. What now?? I  reset PRAM, I think.....?????

I am concerned that you might have applied a system updated intended for an Intel iMac, while you have a PPC (non-Intel) iMac. Your PPC OS should not be looking for an "IntelCPU Power Manager."
Have you tried booting from the 10.5 install DVD/CD and repairing the hard drive, plus repairing permissions?
If you done the repairs mentioned above, and your problem still persists, you can also try doing a safe boot. (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 ) Then, if none of these things worked, if I were in your shoes (it's hard to diagnose these things without being there in person) I would first check that there is adequate disk space, then I would boot from the 10.5 DVD/CD install disk and reinstall the operating system. There is an option to do an archive and install preserving user files/settings, that would be the option you want, as it will save your files but install a new OS. Make sure you have a good backup of your files first. If you do not have one, use "target mode" to copy all your files before embarking on an new OS install. Assuming that you do succeed with this install, then use Software Update to get the right updates for your iMac.

  • 21" iMac (Late 2012) loud fans

My iMac keeps running the fans really quickly causing it to make a very loud noise.
I have downloaded the fan control application, however it didn't seem to work as it didn't do anything after several attempts and reinstallments.
The air coming from the vent at the back is warm, but not too hot. And it's kept next to a window, so it's not the temperature of the room that's causing this.
Does anyone have any solution as to what I can do?

Uninstall the fan control software per the developers instructions and do a simple SMC reset, do the reset 3-4 times. Instructions are at:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
While you're at it do the PRAM reset too. Your iMac is not a PC that requires 3rd party apps to operate correctly, all the diagnostic and repair tools needed by most users is built right into OS X.

  • Tv tuner card for imac 400mhz powerpc g3

tv tuner card for imac 400mhz powerpc g3 - 256ram - I'm running os x 10.3.9. Does anyone know of a tv tuner card or device that I can use to watch tv on my imac?

Unfortunately most of these TV devices require USB2 bandwidth so are not suitable for the iMac G3.
The Firewire versions (EyeTV 310, 410 and 610 depending on input type) are the only options.
The EyeTV 250 is an analogue only Tuner that does work on USB1.1 but in a low quality mode only.

  • IMac i7 - Strange CPU-fan problem!

    Hi,
my name is Chris and I'm living in Germany. Sorry for my pigeon english, I'm not very good in languages... Nevertheless I will try to describe my problem.
I have received my iMac last saturday. It's an i7 with 2TB hard drive. On sunday suddenly the CPU-fan went nuts, spinning with about 3500 rpm. At that time there was no heavy CPU load at all.
Neither P-RAM- nor SMC-resets fixed the problem, the CPU-fan was running at full speed all the time. On monday morning (the i7 was switched during the night), the problem was still persisting. Hence, I contacted Apple and they promised to send me a replacement for the i7 in about three weeks.
Later on this monday, I received a package with additional 4GB of memory I had ordered for the iMac. Although the iMac was making noise comparable to a 747, I decided to build in the additional 4GB of RAM, just to play a bit around with an "8GB machine". The assembly of the additional memory was pretty easy, basically everything was working fine (memory wise). But the CPU-fan was still continuously at around 3500 rpm.
Afterwards, I decided to clean up the computer a bit by using the "automatic" script within "Onyx". I started the procedure and left the room.
When I came back about 1 hour later, there was total silence in the room. In first instance I wasn't surprised very much, because the iMac was obviously in the sleep mode. But I was really surprised when I woke it up again: The CPU- fan was back to normal, spinning with 940rpm. Almost completely silent.
Any ideas what happened? Can there be a connection between the "fan-went-nuts-issue" and the Onyx scripts?
What shall I do? My iMac is behaving now, but I have already ordered replacement...
    Best wishes,
    Chris

Yes, I have seen this thread, thank you.
When the CPU-fan started to spin at 3800, one of the first thing I tried was putting the iMac into the sleep mode. After I had done so, I woke it up back again almost immediately (about 1 minute later) by pressing the space bar. But for some reason, the iMac woke (with normal fan noise) and then immediately fall back into sleep (after being about 10 seconds awake). A "proper wake up" was not possible, since it was sort of an infinitely loop of waking up and falling asleep. A reboot via the power button was necessary, whereby the fan went back to 3800 rpm.
And then I performed this Onyx-run (as mentioned in my first post), and afterwards the iMac went to sleep mode automatically. It stayed in the sleep mode for about an hour or so, and after my next wake up call it was cured.
Really strange. Either it was cured by the maintenance-things Onyx did to the cache/system files, or by being in the sleep mode for about one hour. I also can't exclude influence of our Lord, since I was behaving in the last year...
Somehow I have lost my trust in that machine. Even after the fan went back to normal behavior I am still not sure if I should cancel the replacement order... I am open for recommendations from your side.
    Best wishes,
    Chris

  • How to install Bluetooth Card in imac g5 powerpc?

I have an imac G5 PowerPC with 20" screen. I didn't get a Bluetooth Card factory installed but recently decided I needed it so I bought one from a 3rd party vendor. Question is how can I install it?
I don't really care about voiding warranty, so if someone can point me in the right direction it would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the response. I guess the question I have is then if there is no way to install a bluetooth card into an iMac G5, why is this part sold? Indeed, Apple even has a part number for it.
Do I trash the little guy that I already purchase and buy a dongle (I've always wanted a dongle....)? Or is there some way to get the card installed, as (a) I don't want to sacrifice yet another USB port and (b) I already own the thing! I would take suggestions such as:
    - Just bring it to a dealer and they can install it for you (helpful, if true);
    or
    - Ideally, the method by which the end-user can install it at the expense of the warranty (question solved) is: <Follow that link>.
Much obliged as always. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

  • IPhone 4s will not communicate with iMac g5 PowerPc

I bought a new 32 gb iphone 4s and I can't load it from itunes
can't get my iphone 4s version 6 to be recognized by my iMac G5 powerpc version 10.5.8
iphoto recognizes iphone 4s and icon shows up for the device and, but not itunes, no icon at all.
    itunes gives me message:
"The iPhone “Alvin Bruning’s 4S iPhone” cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 10.6.3 or later. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."
when in itunes  i check for update itunes in menu and i get message:
"This version of iTunes (10.6) is the current version."
when i try to load latest itunes version 10.7 off Apple website i get the message:
"you can't open the application "read before you install itunes app" because it is supported on the architecture.

Sounds like Apple screwed me again. They just figured out a way to make my computer obsolete. Great, now Apple does no longer support the iMac PowerPC G5 link-up to my iPhone 4s. Can't sync with all the music I purchased because iTunes does not recognized my new phone. Wish they would have told me that before I bought a new iPhone 4s.
Go out and buy a new Apple computer? Sure that's a good idea, than I can see how much of my gear is incompatable with "IT". Thanks Apple for supporting "Windows" users and dropping the support of all the customers who have been true to you all these years.

  • Imac G5 PowerPC Display shuts off intermittently

I have a iMac G5 PowerPC 2.1 GHz running 10.4.11. A few weeks ago I started having this problem where the display shuts off intermittently (as if it was going into screen saver mode). If I move the mouse or press a key the display comes back after a few seconds. I've made sure that I turned off all screen saver settings. I have yet to determine if there is a pattern to this behavior. It happens every few minutes on some days and not for several hours sometimes.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for the help.

  • I turned my iMac on and the fan is so loud...never heard this before. any ideas?

I turned my iMac on and the fan is so loud...never heard this before. any ideas?

An SMC reset may fix it, although it may not prove to be a permanent solution:

If it re-occurs I'd suspect a failed sensor.

  • Frequent and chronic Slowness on Late 2009 21.5" iMac, Issues with Display, Fan, and Booting

    Hello,
Sorry for the repost, but I realized after the edit period had passed that I left out a lot of information from my original post, and that I misrepresented my problem in the question heading. Because of this, I am posting again with the updated information.
I  am using a 21.5" iMac from Late 2009 with OSX Mavericks 10.9.2.  Recently, I have been experiencing several signs of failure/aging during  use:
    Frequent:
Mail.app slow opening, closing; messages opened in large batches do not get marked as read
Terminal.app experiences noticeable lag when opening (it sometimes takes between 5 and 20 seconds between launching the application and getting an active prompt)
Processes lag or become unresponsive, even when not many applications are running
Browswers frequently become unresponsive, pinwheel, or lag considerably, frequently requiring a force-quit.
    Mouse Pinwheels Frequently
    Intermittent
Computer  generates loudly audible fan noises, persists even when computer is  briefly powered off during a reboot; does not always stop after  rebooting
    Finder often becomes unresponsive
    Rare (one time only)
Machine  powered on in "Safe Boot" mode for no apparant reason; red text reading  "Safe Boot" in menu bar of login screen; background picture slideshow  mode became very glitchy, phased and flashed in horizontal grey bars  before loading next background image
    Chronic (Consistently Happens)
Machine  will not boot if plugged into normal powerpoint after being unplugged  from that power-point; cable must be plugged into a different A/C power  outlet for machine to boot, at which point it can be switched off again,  moved back to the original dedicated outlet, and booted again. This has  never failed to happen, and is mind-boggling.
I followed some instructions from a similar thread,  but I felt that my experiences were sufficiently different that I  couldn't troubleshoot from someone else's solution. I would greatly  appreciate any technical advice and help that the community can offer.

1: If I hold down option key with my USB plugged in to see my hard drives so I can boot into Windows, boot camp is not there. It does not show up on my Start Up Disk in my Mac, either. Though, I do see it in Finder with nothing in it (I can put stuff into it).
This indicates that your Bootcamp partition is still FAT, which also indicates that the Windows Installer has not been used to reformat it to NTFS yet, as required by Windows Installer. No Windows installation exists yet.
2: If I don't hold down option key with my USB plugged in, it gives me a black screen saying "Non-system disk, press any key to reboot". My keyboard is unresponsive. I have to hard shut down my computer.
The NVRAM in the Mac (as set by Bootcamp Assistant) is telling it to boot from the built-in Optical drive. Is it fully functional and has Windows Installer media in it or broken? Since no drivers have been loaded, the Keyboard/Mouse which are BT/USB, will not function.
From iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) - Technical Specifications, it has a built-in Optical drive...
    Optical drive
    Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Writes DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs at up to 4x speed
Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed
Writes DVD-RW discs at up to 6x speed and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed
Reads DVDs at up to 8x speed
Writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed
Writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed
Reads CDs at up to 24x speed
3: If I don't hold down option key and it is without my USB plugged in, it gives me a black screen saying "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". My keyboard is, again, unresponsive. I have to hard shut down my computer.
No bootable media in Optical drive, hence this error.
