IMac G5 programs will not save, unable in system pref to unlock

Recently I seem to have growing problem with Microsoft Office programs not being able to save without crashing: Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001) Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000008. Other programs dealing with checking the system for software/hardware problems (like TechTool) will start, but the beach ball begins in a few seconds and does not stop spinning ("application not responding").
Following Article HT1199, I tried to create a new user account to test whether my user account was corrupted and when I try to "click the lock to make changes" and it starts "Authenticating..." but the beach ball starts to spin and "application not responding" is what the dock says.
I've repaired permissions several times; I've run the Apple Hardware Test (long version) with no indicated problems; I've changed the admin password using my original CD; I tried moving the Caches folder to the desk top but the copy windows sets at "preparing to copy" and never proceeds further; I've entered the safe mode, without success; some programs seem to continue to work like TextEdit (able to save), Quicken, Safari, etc. It seems I've lost control of my account and my permissions to write from Work and Excel.
Things really seem to start going downhill when I tried to install the free Sophos Anti-Virus Software. I was able to download it, but the install would hang and not continue. Tried the process again and it hanged. Turned off my firewall NetBarrier X4 and tried again, but Sophos hanged during the install. (My wife, on a different machine, did get it to install, but it started interfering with Apple Works, so she turned it off.) I don't know if it was able to install partly and now interferes with me being able to write from programs like Word and prevents me from gaining access to my System Preferences.
Any ideas, or should I just proceed with reinstalling the system and update it to were I am now? (Note I don't want to go any higher than X.4.11 as I have a OS 9 program I need to run and there is no upgrade available.)

I'm back. I got all of the files in my user area backup of on an external drive, plus other files.
I was searching in Google for not being able to unlock a user account and found Apple Discussion #2144971 which seemed to help another person when they couldn't unlock their user account. It recommended creating a root account and then creating another user account with admin privileges. I followed the instructions and was able to create a root account and create an other user account with admin privileges, but when I signed into this new account, it was locked and I once again got the beach ball when trying to unlock it. While in root both accounts are unlocked, but once signed on to them they are locked. While in root I tried to use Word, but it still bombs on a save.
Also while in root I could run TechTools and ran all the routines that it would allow. I once again tried to startup using the TechTools CD by holding the C key down on startup, the gray screen came up with the Apple logo and the spinning gear, the CD is turning, but after awhile a circle with a cross-line appears with the gear still turning and I have to push the power button to gain control.
Also while in root, I downloaded Onyx's version for OS10.4 and ran it. (It kept flashing up a window with an Applescript error every once and a while). It didn't find any problems.
In your reply right after referring to Onyx, you said "cleaning User caches..." I assumed then that Onyx did that, but was that something I had to do manually? If so, how?
Did you see my reply about Office database and the link you provided?
Any further ideas? With Onyx not working, is it DiskWarrior time or another utility? Or is it time to think about putting in the original CD's and erasing my hard drive, re-install the system, start the Software Update process, reinstall my Office version and put back all my user folders and data? Any suggestions for this process?

    10.7.2 is not an update, it is an upgrade, but (if your Mac is new enough) should upgrade to the latest version of OSX, Mountain Lion. It's $20 and you can buy it in the App Store (Apple Menu)

    Same proble here, although the Firefox system requirements says it is OK to have PowerPC G3 G4 or G5 ( I have G5 2GHZ)

    Thank you for your suggestions. I downloaded a more recent version of Twain, but this didn't help. I also tried closing and opening Photo Shop and restarting my computer without success. Reinstalling Photo Shop sounds like a very promising solution, but I'm  not sure I will do it. In the meantime I can scan items using a printer program. These scans open in Photo Shop. It is an extra step.

  • Volume Level Will Not Save When Restarting or Shutting Down iMac

    I have a 24" iMac with 10.4.9 and all available updates as of April 5. When I restart my iMac the volume level will not save so when I reboot into OS X it is at 50% which is inconvenient for me since I have my speakers at full so all I would have to do is use my Mac's volume to turn it up. I never had this problem with my G4 Mac Mini. I know I could just create an Automator action, but the system should save the volume automatically, shouldn't it?

    I have had this problem since the day I got my machine in february last year. At every new boot it's not full (as i like it) but only up half way.
    I don't know why it doesn't stick, but I've lived with it for over a year so I kinda forgot about it.
    OS X ignoring the setting whether or not to dim the display after a few minutes is another of those minor peeves that have been around for over a year.

    OK, I have used the "Automate/Batch" function well over a hundred times, so this situation (first time using it in CS6) is VERY frustrating!
    Running Adobe CS6 extended v. 13.0.1 x32 on a Win XP sp3 OS.
    I have a slew of photos that need nothing done except to resize from the native file size to 6 in x 4 in @ 150 ppi and save into a new folder (to not override the original).  I have recorded the action multiple times now and each time I run the action, the files do not save! Here are the various parameters I've used:

    Please help!  This has never been a problem before CS6 and I truly am at my wits end trying to figure out why the files will not save.  I have several hundred files that I need to run this on, so doing it individually is not an option.

    I'm having a problem with Automating > Batch as well. Strange enough, I did a batch of other photos and it worked fine. Selecting a new set of folders is not working at all; the files simply pop open and then close but the destination folder remains empty. It also doesn't appear the actions are occuring since I don't see them highlighting as the automation runs. I have no idea why it would work then not. BTW, "Override Action "Save As" is unchecked.

    UPDATE: I put a "save as" command at the beginning of the action, then checked the "Override Action "Save As" box and it somehow works now, but not before stalling on an image (normally the last in the folder) and complaining that the image was being used in another program. The only other program opened was Bridge so I'm unsure why it had a problem. I closed both programs and ran the automation with nothing else opened and it worked ... ?? Confused, but not complaining (for now).

    I updated Pages two months ago to the latest version.  BUT, my MAIL program will not allow me to send documents I attach that are genereated witht eh update Pages.  And, when I save a doc to desktop generated in Pages, it will not opena, a box pops up and tells me the it wil not open until I have upgraded to the new PAges, WHICH I HAVE ALREADY DONE!!!  What is UP with this, can anyone please help me?  Would GREATLY appreciate it.

    Pages 5 is in a new format that is not compatible with GMail, Google, Amazon, DropBox and other 3rd party servers.

  • Photoshop CS will not "save" or "save as" my canon 5d jpegs

    CS works fine for me. No need to upgrade. But it does not like my jpeg files from a Canon 5d. The program just freezes when I try to save or save as.
    I've looked at the file permissions and preferences. Can't see anything, but who knows? Any advice gratefully received. Tried renaming file, tried converting to TIFF but no luck so far. Argh!
    I'll attach a file if anyone wants to look at the settings.

    Just replied in the PS forum. Yes reset all tolls works. File opens and Saves As - but on opening gives warning
    "embedded ICC profile cannot be used as is invalid. Ignoring."
    So somewhere - uploading from camera or loading into PS something sometimes goes wrong.
    So I'm not much wiser, but thanks for the fix anyway. Best, P.
    PS Was not a freeze as such, the main screen dims, and I regain control by clicking on a PS window on my second monitor. Did not check what Task Manager has to say - but will next time it goes wrong. Thanks.

    When you save "freeze" do you mean that Windows Task Manager says it's "not responding" or is it crashing or what?
    Out of curisity, when you do this, what happens when you press ESC on the keyboard? If the program comes back, then it might just be showing up off the screen.

  • System Settings will not save my desired mouse scroll direction

    I understand the Apple genius of wanting the Settings: Mouse: Scroll direction: Natural box to be checked.  But **** it, this is MY iMac and I want the scroll direction to remain Unchecked, so the screen scrolls in the direction I’ve been used to for YEARS.
    The problem is the System Settings will not save the unchecked scroll box.  I have to return to the System Settings every time I log on to UN check the Scroll Direction: Natural box.
    Will Apple ever fix this so that I, and others, can operate the scrolling as THEIR LONG-TIME USER sees fit?

    Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
    Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
    Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
    If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Programs will not overwrite files.

    I attempt to save files, or overwrite files using multiple programs and they will not save as overwrites. They save with (1) behind the original name. Normally this would not be a great issue, but I deal with many files
    at a large volume. I deal with .pdf files. Using Adobe Reader, G.I.M.P. 2, PDF24 Creator, and PDF Split and Merge Basic. This problem only began 1 week ago. I have attempted to remedy with malware scans, disk defrag, virus scans and ultimately formatted and
    re-installed windows. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks.

    Check file properties, do you see "Locked" ? Or unlock option ?

    It still would not work and I was tearing out what little hair I had left. I phoned Adobe this afternoon and a very helpful chap took over my computer and did various things to Photoshop including using the CC tool again, uninstalling and reinstalling and removing some Photoshop files in Program files on the computer. I am very pleased to report that it now works perfectly.
    The only caveat is that all my plug-ins have disappeared. But having said that, I wonder if they caused the problems and Photoshop works much more quickly without them. I may not take the risk of reinstalling them as Photoshop does pretty well all you need anyway.

  • InDesign Will Not Save or Save As in CS6 or CC

    This has been an ongoing problem. I have Adobe Creative Cloud. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, updated to new versions. ONLY problems with INDesign.
    Will not SAVE or SAVE AS./
    I have been forced to export as In Design Markup (IDML) file as a workaround, which is not helpful at all.
    Save and Save As options are grayed out and unavailable.
    ANY IDEAS anyone? I see that there are others on discussion board for this issue, but no one seems to have successfully cracked this nut.
    In Design version 9.2.2
    Mac OSX 10.9.4, 3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 1600 MHz DDR3. Plenty of machine.

    Dear Bonolgirl55,
    This has been a very frustrating experience - and I know there are many others out there dealing with this same problem. I have had several email and live chat conversations with the INDesign team about this. They have not yet solved the problem (they are reportedly aware and working on a fix for future update), but we did find two workarounds to the problem.
    First workaround is to export as IDML files and open that way. That is a maddening solution, you will find, and still does not allow you to UNDO or use the program to its maximum efficiency. It does help you prevent complete loss of your work however.
    Second workaround -- assuming you are using a Mac -- was to create a completely new Mac User on your computer, logout of your current user, then login to new user and reopen InDesign there. When I did that, InDesign had no problems at all. It worked fine. The issue with that, of course, is that you have to make sure your files and graphics are all copied over to new user Documents file, or or otherwise accessible from a shared drive somewhere. This solution allowed me to use InDesign without any of the Save / Save As / Undo issues -- but obviously undercut workflow productivity between Adobe programs and with other files, email, etc. as I was essentially cut off from my normal desktop work environment and lacked easy toggle between Mac Users.
    I am afraid that I have no other solution to offer, and I don't know when Adobe will figure this out. My problem ONLY applies to InDesign (I am a Creative Cloud subscriber). It's been very unpleasant and annoying.
