IMac G5 random shutdown, won't restart

Increasingly, my early 17-inch iMac G5 randomly shuts down, and the only way I've found to restart it is to unplug everything — power, printer, ethernet (cable modem), firewire backup disc, Palm cradle — and then plug everything back in. Then the light on the front of the computer comes back on and it restarts. There's no disconcerting odor, no odd noises. It seems to happen when the computer's been left alone and sleeping. What's wrong? What can I do to stop this? I don't know whether it's a hardware problem or a software problem. Thanks for any suggestions you have.

For me, it was several failures of each affected component.
So, it was a Power Supply, a logic board, a LCD Screen, keyboard, etc.
They just had a lot of faulty parts.
The problem was that they were sending out refurbished parts for the repairs (which is their standard practice). So, we were getting parts that they thought they had fixed, but still actually had problems that had slipped past their refurbishing process.
So, we may have gotten a refurbished part that had been fixed enough to pass their short test, but not fixed enough to survive actual long-term use.
With the power supplies, they did eventually switch to another manufacturer for the replacements. So, any replacement you get now, should be a better power supply.
But, any other part will be a refurbished version of the original parts that were used in the first systems.
Since they switched to another brand of power supply, I would not expect to have repeating problems with those.
But, if your logic-board were acting-up, I would expect your odds are 50 / 50 as to whether the replacement would later have problems as well since it is not a new design but a fixed original product.
Hope this helps.

  • New Leopard and RAM Random shutdown won't restart

I have recently purchased Leopard and new RAM to boost my systems power for an HD editing project.
Ever since my computer now randomly shuts down and won't restart. The only thing that gets the computer to restart is if I pop out the RAM cards and reinsert them. It never did this before I upgraded. And if I leave out the new RAM card it still shuts down with just the old RAM leading me to believe theres a problem with Leopard.
I've done disk utility and while the 1st time I ran it it found errors that it repaired. But it still shuts down and when I run disk utility it finds no errors. I can't figure this out and I need to get this project going. Any ideas?

THis is the results of the test through rember. I have no idea what these results mean.

  • My iMac G5 (with Sight) won't restart

My iMac G5 (with iSight) won't restart, every time I restart it the screen goes black and nothing happens, not even the startup chime sounds and the keyboard and mouse won't work, I can't even restart the PMU nor do anything, about a minute later the fans turn on making a very loud sound so I have to turn it down by holding the power button, after some time I manage to turn it on and everything works perfectly, but when I restart it again the samething happens, I've tried everything that appears in the support page, not even the hardware diagnostics detected a problem, even when I'm reinstalling Mac OS X when it comes to the part where it restarts itself the same thing happens.
    Does anyone have a suggestion?
    Thanks

    Contributed by Fumiaki Kawashima;
There are many reasons to become unable shutting down or restarting from Apple Menu. Some were explained by other posters.
Most importantly, loginwindow (the parent process is launchd.) close out the user session, continue to set the device permissions and user preferences to their defaults in a restart action, or the process power off the system in a shutdown action. However, the issue proves that somewhere in those routines cannot be performed.
Users authentication system seems to be intact because you can restart or shutdown from the login window. However, the admin account authenticated by the Tiger security systems could confuse somehow and affect loginwindow process for setting up the user environment. This may result in interfering with the process for the shutdown and restart mentioned above.
Test if you can shutdown from the keyboard-- Holding down controloptioncommand keys, and then press the eject key.
Check if the loginwindow plists are corrupted. To do this test, remove the followings to temporary folders on the desktop, and shutdown from the keyboard shortcut combination. Restart the computer to test the recurrence.
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    /Users/HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
Try disabling Login Items for third-party applications via the Accounts system preference, if any.
Verify whether any third-party kernel extensions (including device drivers) interfere with the loginwindow hooks process-- Start up with a Safe-mode, then test the Restart from Apple Menu to see whether it works. Also, boot into a Single-user mode, and test if "reboot" command is available from the BSD layer. The I/O Kit API for software developers provides a shutdown hook so that ".kext" troubleshooting may need to be considered. Besides, some bad programmed extension may not be unloaded automatically at a shutdown or restart.
If the computer is configured with Irish language Input method and/or third-party Irish keyboard, try disabling them to test.
A third-party application or custom script may interfere with the loginwindow hooks for the Shut Down or Restart. For example, if you install an application that prevents casually powering down a system, the Shut Down and Restart buttons may not work. Also, if you install a P2P file sharing application, try uninstalling it.
As last resorts, troubleshoot a bad RAM and consider "Erase and Install" solution.
    OPTION:
Post a part of system.log that indicates events from "localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us" to the next same line.
This may help to narrow down because restarting or shutting down the system process can initiate the procedure programmatically by sending an appropriate Apple event to Mac OS X Tiger's system process (loginwindow).
Likewise, check console.log whether any failures is reported.
    Corrections:
Most importantly, the loginwindow (the parent process is launchd.) close out the user session, continue to set the device permissions and user preferences to their defaults in a restart action, or the process power off the system in a shutdown action.
However, the admin account authenticated by the Tiger security systems could confuse somehow and it may impact on the loginwindow process for setting up the user environment. This may result in interfering with the process for the shutdown and restart as mentioned above.
    Addendum:
If you post a copy of system.log, consider to edit the Ethernet interface ID to a fake value.
    API = Application Programming Interface
    Cheers!

  • S 4 Shuts down randomly and won't restart

    Hello,
I brought and S 4 7/27 and loved it for the first few days. A few days later it started shutting down randomly and the only way to restart is to take the battery out. That works for an hour or so until it shuts down again. I've tried uninstalling all the apps I've installed but I still get the same result.
    Any sugestions?
    Thansk,
    twinsfan

twinsfan2013, the software for some 3rd party applications can affect the performance of your device. Although you've uninstalled a few application, the issue may still remain on your phone. I recommend that you back up your device at Verizon's cloud or Backup Assistance and then hard reset your phone if the power cycling issue persists. • IMac Shuts Down and Won't Restart for ANYTHING!

I'm unsure if this is the right place, but our iMac just crashed for the second time. Here are some details:
    1. It's happened before, but it was easily corrected when we switched power outlets. And even then the old outlet worked afterwards.
    2. I've looked all over for help, but all I keep seeing is reports of the same thing - which is highly annoying.
    3. I've tried all the soulutions I've seen:
~Shut down for 20 seconds, remove power cord, plug back in, turn on (didn't work), hold D.
~Take out RAM modules and put back in
I got a response from the latter "solution", but it didn't go past the start up whir, but not the start up sound.
It's not turning on for anything, what the heck do I do now?!

This is the formal procedure for doing an SMC reset (disconnecting from power and reconnecting)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
so be sure you followed it precisely, instead of just unplugging it. Also, while doing this procedure, you should disconnect ALL cables. If you have been using a crowded or old power strip, connect it directly to the wall outlet, at least initially for this test. Power it up with nothing connected except for the power cord. If it starts up properly, connect just your keyboard/mouse and use it that way for a while. If the iMac is working properly at this point, you should also reset PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If all is well, add you peripheral devices back, one at a time if possible. If the problem recurs at some point, note which device was added last. USB and FireWire devices can become defective, or otherwise interfere with sleep, wake, startup, and shutdown.
If the problem still occurs, even after the SMC reset when you power up with nothing connected (except the power cord) or when you are using it with ONLY your keyboard/mouse connected, you should have it looked at by a technician at an Apple Store or Apple-certified repair shop. If you got it January 2009, it is still under the one-year warranty.

  • Eqium M40X-189 powers itself down randomly and won't restart easily

A few days ago my Equim M40X shut itself down while unattended (running from mains power with battery in place). All that was on was the green mains power light. Pressing the start button had no effect. I removed the battery and replaced it - still no joy. Took it to my local computer repair shop - they claimed at first there was nothing wrong, but when I came to collect it would not start. They "reseated power board connector and touch pad connector, and tested 15 times - switches on and off correctly" 25 the poorer I took it home. Next day- same problem. Eventually got it to start, but after 1 minute it shut down. Restarted again and ran OK several hours. Today, would not start. Took the battered out completely - started OK, but shut down after 2 hours or so. I can usually get it going by uplugging the mains and/or the battery, but have no idea how long it will go before shutting itself down.
    Please help!!

Hmmm. its really hard to say what could be wrong
Usually the notebook shuts down automatically due to the high temperature
Maybe the cooling modules are clogged by dust and debris its worth to clean the cooling fans and to renew the thermal grease which is placed between the cooling module and CPU
But this is a job for an ASP technician as mentioned by Jeka
Therefore get in contact with the local ASP and ask for help!
    Good luck

  • Freeze - force shutdown - won't restart

My touchpad froze when copy n pasting an URL into an Email. I read about this bug quite often, so it should be a known issue. I then pressed the on/off, volume and center button for 30sec. to force shut it down. I then wasn't able to start the pad again. on off button does nothing - as well as plugging it in. Any suggestions?
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

You can try a battery reset by holding the power button and pressing the center button 10 or more times repeatedly.
When you tried the restart did you hold the power button and the center button for 15 seconds or until you see the HP logo on screen; If not you need to try this process again?

  • Overheating or random shutdown?

Last night I while I was using my iMac it randomly shutdown twice, one right after another.
I have had the random shutdown problem in the past but have not experienced one for quite some time. (I had taken several steps to fix, including running the disk utilities and deleting some power management file. Whatever I did seemed to be working.)
I had also been using iMovie, exporting movies, all day. I had also been heavily using iPhoto and Firefox, moving photos out and onto Facebook. The case was hot to the touch and iStatpro said that the power supply was around 159 degrees F and the CPU was around 135 degrees F. Is it possible I triggered some sort of safety cutoff?
Please help me out here. I love this computer but the random shutdowns are totally killing it. Thanks in advance.

    Hello All,
Here's my experience with unexpected shutdowns...
My 20" Intel iMac is 6 months old - August 08.
    - After shutting it down one evening as per normal, it just wouldn't turn on the next morning. Nothing I did worked: different power socket, changed the fuse (UK plug) etc. When I had just about given up carrying it around the house, it suddenly came back to life. Went to the shop to buy milk, got back and off it was again. Weird. So I spoke to Apple Care who suggested I take it down to the Apple Store in central London, UK. I laboriously did so (try taking the underground with an iMac... not fun) and dropped it off mid afternoon.
    - Got a call the same evening from Apple Store: my iMac turned on fine first time (typical), tests were being run on it (basically stress testing the processor with multiple processes), and it was fine. No fault was found, I could go and pick it up.
    - So I take it back home the next day, again battling with London commuters with my heavy, bulky iMac box and plug it in. All fine. Work all day on it as per normal (nothing intensive). Then at about 10pm, it just turns off. No warning, nothing. Just off, and this time its staying off. I let it cool down, nothing. Diffent plugs, nothing. Change the plug fuse, nothing. Next morning, nothing. Its dead.
    - So I head off directly to the Apple Store again, iMac in hand, and battle it out again with London commuters on the underground. I explain the situation, am promised this will be a priority repair...
    - Eventually, after 10 days (Christmas got in the way), I get a call that it is ready. Two items of hardware were changed, namely 1) power supply and 2) Cable/DC Power/SATA/Inverter. Though none of them were actually faulty, they are the items that can cause sudden shutdowns...
    - I pick it up, and it seems fine since. But upon switching it on, I noticed the whole bottom half of my dispay was dim. Bright at the top, grey at the bottom... Another chat with Apple Care (by then am on first name terms with the whole team), we do various hardware resets to no avail. Am advised to drop it off at Apple. So off I go to the Apple Store again.
And I just got it back again.. with a new LCD display...
So the cost of all repairs to my 6 months old iMac is now more than half of the overall cost of the machine. Still, credit to Apple for not quibbling on any of the above issues, and fixing them (relatively) quickly and efficiently.
Now lets hope my iMac stays on and stays bright...

  • IMac 27' Mid 2011 Random Shutdowns - Static on start up

    Hello everyone,
I will try to explain step by step what's been happening to my computer for the last month:
(english not my 1st language so please excuse my grammar)
I use my computer mostly for work, I'm a web developer I've never done some kind of modification to my OSX since my limitations are to the web & I casually use it for gaming on windows via Bootcamp, after almost three years of no problems my computer decided to restart randomly, mostly happened while playing a game on Windows.
I started doing some checks with Apple Hardware Test & it did return an error which appeared to be related to HDD fans & then I remembered that especially this iMacs (Mid 2011 iMac 27) could have HDD issues & apple launched a replacement program https://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive/, I did get the email from them but I ignored it until now.
    The error it showed: 4M0T / 4 / 40000003: HDD-1442
I took to it to an apple authorized distributor to get my replacement thinking it could be related to my HDD as well & not only my fan, after a few days they called me telling that in fact the fan was full of dust, so they did clean the entire computer & asked apple for a HDD replacement since the program still runs.
3 days after I got my iMac back with a new HDD & a clean computer... so I started to reinstall everything I work with... Sublime Text, Adobe Cloud, Terminal, Xcode & Eclipse, everything seemed to be okay, finally I decided to reinstall Windows 7 with Bootcamp (Sadly I need it for IE testing) the next day random shut downs started to happen again with a new issue.... static on start up screen or random stripes will appear on the screen while using it & shut downs started to happen more frequently but it needed to restart about 2-3 times to be able to fully start.
I started running AHT again to check it & then same error appeared, just a different end number code:
    4M0T / 4 / 40000003: HDD-1223
I then took it asap to my authorized distributor, they ran apple AHT in front of me & no error showed up, I explained that the random restart, static or stripes would happen randomly, it didn't matter if I was doing high processing stuff or just watching random stuff on the web, so they kept it.
The next day they called & were able to find that indeed the fan was still malfunctioning, the AHT came positive, they asked apple for the replacement, which cost me around 35 bucks.
4 days after they finally received the fan & change it so I got my iMac back & I reinstalled everything again, including windows 7.
I decided to leave my computer on Windows all night just to make sure everything was okay right when I wake up I hear the start up sound, oh gawd.... it restarted again.... indeed it logged back in Windows 7 & it prompted the usual Windows error when the computer shuts down the wrong way. I tried to not take it seriously, I was installing everything I need in Windows as well, browsers, Adobe CC, fliezilla & sublime but it was randomly shutting down again.
After all this I've ran AHT with no errors appearing, just new different issues.... sigh...
-Now my computer will actually shut down even while doing AHT but no error will show up (if AHT ends before restart happens)...
-It won't restart now, it just remains like half-on, I have to turn it off manually so it can actually restart.
-Same static appear on start up screen, but now it will try to restart when it happenes.
         -No color stripes so far.
I tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM but it didn't work.
I was trying to watch a video on youtube but it did restart with a new thing that never happened before...
Right after OSX started a message prompted telling me that an error occurred and caused a restart so I opened it & the first thing that calls me attention is the line which says "Windows Server" & asked myself if it could be related to my windows partition, I decided to delete it, but nothing changed, I tried by repairing my disk & permissions with Disk Utility & voila! now it seems to be running fine... in fact I was able to write this message with no trouble at all...
No AHT errors so far, so what the **** is going on?
I'm worried that it could be my GPU but I have no idea... AHT is not helping me :/
Here's the message i was able to recover from the OSX log:

  • Randomly turns itself off, and won't restart.

OK, I know the shutdown issue can be fixed with a firmware update, but I think I might have another issue from what I have heard described in these posts.
I have had my macbook since July, so it's 5 months old and I’ve been seeing the following issues for the last 2-3 months.
I have been seeing a lot of random shutdowns (maybe every three times I sit down to use my macbook) with no error messages, fully charged with the AC adaptor plugged in. After it shuts down and I try to turn it on, it will stay on from anywhere from 10 seconds to less than one second before turning itself back off. Is this failure to power back up a different issue from the random shutdowns? They seem to correspond, because I have never had trouble powering up when properly shutdown and dormant.
I found a workaround to get booted when it is failing to restart by simply holding the power button for 5-10 seconds until the macbook beeps loudly, then I let go of the power button and it powers up ok, and I don’t see the random shutdown issue for a while.
I have not yet applied the firmware update; will this fix both of my issues? I'm worried that if the random shutdowns stop, that there might still be a hardware issue (not powering up) on my macbook that won't surface until I am out of warranty.
I also heard that a friend of a friend had this same problem and was given a replacement macbook, which makes me think I have a more severe problem.
    Any ideas?
Mac OS X (10.4.7)   macbook ultimate

Well... the issue is they may not have been seated correctly to start with... not so much that they would have worked loose. Actually, if you've ever tried to put RAM into a MacBook, you'll see that they're certainly not loose. Your main problem certainly seems like the random shutdown issue. Your start up issue is related to the same thing. Your MacBook gets a funky signal from a temperature sensor and shuts down. It doesn't want to come back on right away because it thinks the temperature issue has not been resolved. When you hold the power button in and get the beep, you are locking your MacBook at a slower speed which has seemed to work for some people temporarily. The firmware update should resolve your problem.
NOTE: If you know your machine will run for a few minutes under certain circumstances, make sure it's under those circumstances that you update the firmware. You don't want to have a random shutdown during a firmware update.

    1. This is a comment on what you should and should not do to protect yourself from malicious software ("malware") that circulates on the Internet. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
If you find this comment too long or too technical, read only sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
    2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user, but internally Apple calls it "XProtect." The malware recognition database is automatically checked for updates once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
       3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
For the reasons given above, App Store products, and other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. Sandboxing security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
    4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
    5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they're not absolute protection. The first and best line of defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "Trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the malware attacker. If you're smarter than he thinks you are, you'll win.
That means, in practice, that you always stay within a safe harbor of computing practices. How do you know what is safe?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is unsafe.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
Pirated copies or "cracks" of commercial software, no matter where they come from, are unsafe.
Software of any kind downloaded from a BitTorrent or from a Usenet binary newsgroup is unsafe.
Software that purports to help you do something that's illegal or that infringes copyright, such as saving streamed audio or video for reuse without permission, is unsafe. All YouTube "downloaders" are outside the safe harbor, though not all are necessarily harmful.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. If it comes from any other source, it's unsafe. For instance, if a web page warns you that Flash is out of date, do not follow an offered link to an update. Go to the Adobe website to download it, if you need it at all.
Even signed applications, no matter what the source, should not be trusted if they do something unexpected, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
"FREE WI-FI !!!" networks in public places are unsafe unless you can verify that the network is not a trap (which you probably can't.) Even then, do not download any software or transmit any private information while connected to such a network, regardless of where it seems to come from or go to.
    6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it — not JavaScript — in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Follow the above guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself.
    7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good, if they do any good at all. Any database of known threats is always going to be out of date. Most of the danger is from unknown threats. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free anti-virus products in the Mac App Store — nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial "anti-virus" products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. Most of the real danger comes from highly targeted "zero-day" attacks that are not yet recognized.
By modifying the operating system, the software itself may create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
    8. An anti-malware product from the App Store, such as "ClamXav," doesn't have these drawbacks. That doesn't mean it's entirely safe. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An anti-virus app is not needed, and should not be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful only for detecting Windows malware. Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else.
A Windows malware attachment in email is usually easy to recognize. The file name will often be targeted at people who aren't very bright; for example:
    ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!!!!!!!H0TBABEZ4U!!!!!!!.AVI♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.exe
Anti-virus software may be able to tell you which particular trojan it is, but do you care? In practice, there's seldom a reason to use the software unless an institutional policy requires it.
The ClamXav developer won't try to "upsell" you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
    9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
    10. As a Mac user you don't have to live in fear that your computer may be infected every time you install software, read email, or visit a web page. But neither should you assume that you will always be safe from exploitation, no matter what you do. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.

Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Macbook won't detect external display anymore - Random shutdown injury??

    Hi,
my Macbook has the dreaded random shutdown thing happening, often it can't even get through the startup sequence. If I reset the PMU and PRAM and check the disk every week I can keep it running. Applecare are making not particularly helpful suggestions like "run it in safe mode" - hello people, random means it can take days to happen again... I use this computer for work so I need it at full capacity every day!!!
Anyway, enough angry ranting. The casualty of today's RS and subsequent PRAM PMU resetting is my external display (Viewsonic LCD). The macbook is no longer sending signals to it (display says "no signal"). When I ask the macbook to "detect displays" nothing happens. I have restarted the macbook several times and unplugged and replugged the display connection it doesn't help. Yes, I have the AC power cable plugged in on the Macbook (I know it doesn't like talking to the screen if I don't).
The display and macbook have always worked fine together in the past...
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to test for causes or fix this display related problem?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

You don't mention ever having brought the problem to Apple's attention, or what resulted from your request for Apple's help with it. This isn't a universal or widespread problem. It may be a hardware fault in your own equipment that needs to be resolved with a repair, or it may be a software problem (corrupt file, incompatible software conflict, update needed, etc., etc.). You seem to think Apple should have fixed it for you without your lifting a finger, and you're eager to complain about Apple's lack of support. But you've offered nothing to indicate that Apple even knows you need support. You do have to ask for it. Have you done so?
We have no idea what steps you've taken to try to narrow down the possibilities, e.g., making sure the monitor is turned on; trying a different video cable as iVmichael has suggested; testing the monitor with the same cable on a different computer; testing a different monitor with the same cable and then with a diferent cable on your computer; substituting a different cable adapter, if you are using one; applying all applicable system software updates and then Repairing Permissions and Repairing Disk; starting in Safe Mode and seeing whether the monitor is recognized and activated then; seeing whether the monitor is detected in System Profiler; and so on. You may have done some of these things, but you haven't told us about them or about the results.

  • Can anyone help me get my iMac to reboot?  I get a gray "curtain" over the start up screen saying I need to restart my computer but it won't restart.  I just keep getting the same message every time.

Can anyone help me get my iMac to reboot?  I get a gray "curtain" over the light gray start up screen with a message that I need to restart my computer and to hold the power button until it powers off and then press the power button again to restart.  It just does this over and over again and won't restart.

Yeah, as necronym stated, it is a hardware issue and more than likely a RAM problem. Disconnect everything from the computer except keyboard and mouse and try again. If it still happens try removing one and/or swapping your RAM sticks over. Keep trying until you have eliminated all possible combinations. Just put a mark on one RAM stick so you know what have tried. If it still fails to boot properly you should probably replace your RAM, but that is no guarantee of success. Have a look at this link for more info on a Kernel Panic.

Does the display look like this?

  • IMac G5 shuts off and won't restart

Mac suddenly shuts off, and won't restart. Begins to boot, but shuts down again, sometimes after only a few seconds and before the chime, sometimes after 30 seconds, sometimes after several minutes. After many attempts, can sometimes get restarted. If I hold in the power button, I get a long tone, and then sometimes get a gray screen with Linux style text, and if I type mac-boot as prompted, it will usually reboot. Then its good for a day, or several days but eventually, will go off and I can't reliably get back to that gray screen with text.
Not a techie, or Linux fluent...just got there by accident.
Is there something I can do / reset / or replace to fix this? (Yes, I know the computer's old, but I'm not ready to go to the Intel chip and the expense of repurchasing all my software yet!!)
    Thanks for any help.

I have the same 1.8 GHz iMAC G5, and had the same problem of the computer shutting off abruptly, and then not starting up - shutting down after the chime, or sometime during the start-up process (I don't know about the gray screen - never tried that). Eventually the computer just wouldn't turn on at all - now it's dead.
I found this Apple support article recently, which shows how to diagnose a dead iMac G5, to see whether the computer has a bad power supply or a bad logic board. It might be helpful - in my case, it points to a bad logic board. Maybe both are bad (?). The procedure is for a dead computer, but maybe it would show something in your case too.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2173
Good luck. I don't how much it would cost to put in a new logic board or power supply. I love the monitor on the G5 iMac (beautiful non-glossy), and I wish I knew of a way to use the monitor by itself.
