IMac G5 screen smashed badly.  Is it unsafe to boot into Firewire TDM?

I'm advising a small business owner on the fastest and cheapest way to recover data from an iMac G5 that was vandalized. The screen was struck hard with an object of some sort. I'm not sure what other trauma the machine might have experienced.
Before taking it in for expensive data recovery work, I'd like to try booting into Firewire Target Disk Mode. Is this a risky thing to do with the screen smashed in? Is there a way to safely disconnect the display to reduce the risk of a short?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Depending on the iMac G5 model, it is probably safer to remove the hard drive and see if it will mount on another Mac with an external hard drive case that supports SATA and Firewire. If it won't mount, chances are the machine was struck so hard that the hard drive needle jammed into the drive, and only a data recovery firm can salvage data off of it.
This is why it is so important to backup your data as my FAQ says:

  • IMac running 10.6... I can boot into XP no problem, but Mac partition and Boot CD/DVDs will not go

Have an iMac running 10.6... I can boot into XP no problem, but although the mac partition shows up at (alt key) startup, it just spins for about 5 minutes then restarts. Also, it will not boot from any bootable CD/DVD at all (same spin cycle occurs). Tried about every trick I could research. No warning at all regarding this. Everything was going just peachy then pow... out of nowhere she won't boot. Any ideas

I sugggest you backup the windows xp and start from scratch. This means your disks partition is MBR and not GUID so the mac partitions cant effectively communicate with the EFI partition (bios) and boot.
So boot up using ur mac DVD.
    Choose ur language
at the top of the screen, go to tools and open disk utility
highlight your hard drive and hit the partition tab. select 1 partition and make sure its set to format it as GUID and mac HFS+ file system
Reinstall mac os x do all ur updates
use boot camp utility to make a new windows xp partition and installation.
then to select between os's hold down option during startup

  • MBA Black Screen - and ALWAYS is black (will not boot into OS)

I've read and done everything. Many are saying they are able to get a restart and change settings - but I can not get pas the black screen at all. I continue to do a hard restart, it goes to black screen. I use the control-option-shift-power, and it powers back to the gray screen, then black again. I do the command-option-p-r and it goes to gray screen then black. I can't get it into the OS to even change the settings.
I even tried the connection to a TV and it also is black. This is a constant cycle to the black screen.
I don't know what version the OS today, but I know I have updated once in the last 30 days, but not in the last 2 weeks (manually, I have not).
Any advice to get to the home OS screen, so I can adjust settings?
    2012 MBA

    OS is 10.9.2.
I booted into command-r to get to the Time Machine backup from Jan 25th of 2014. I have a screen that I can see, but when I restart (I have not restored from backup), it goes back to black screen. I AM WONDERING now if I should just restore, then work on the settings for the black screen ??

  • Can't get past gray screen for OS X but will boot into Windows partition.

Hi- I am really desperate for help here.
Restarted my computer this evening when Front Row wasn't able to find the files on my external HD. When it booted it went directly in to my Windows Boot Camp partition. So I restarted, held down 'option', choose my OS X disk and just got the spinning sun icon on the gray screen for several minutes. It then booted into Windows again. If I hold down 'option' again I can cut it off before it gets to Windows.
I've tried booting into a cloned HD via FireWire and same results.
I've tried booting with the install disk (c key held down) and it won't recognize it.
I've tried Safe Mode (shift key) - same.
I've booted into Single User and done fsck and and it says everything is ok.
    - BUT I did notice it says further up- "BSD: rootdisk0s2, major 14, minor 2". Are these errors? If so why didn't fsck find and fix them.
I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC.
The only thing I have done out of the ordinary was an hour before I was trying to get some of my files on my wife's laptop and went into permissions on my HD and changed "Everyone" Priviledges to Read (or maybe it was Read and Write) then chose "apply to enclosed items". This change took about 20 minutes.
The computer is, of course, just over a year old and has worked perfectly up until now.
    Someone-Please!!!

Tried that and it just doesn't read the disk. I've booted it with the disc already in and held Shift and also tried it with "C". The same for putting the disc in just as it boots up.
I went into Single User mode again and compared the text against what shows up on the laptop. Their are a few differences. At the very beginning of the iMac text there is:
    npvhash=4095
    hi mem tramps at 0xffe00000
    PAE Enabled
    64 bit mode enabled
    -then-
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpicomponents; use only one style.
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpicomponents; use only one style.
-then- after "MAC Framework successfully initialized" comes this three times...
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpicomponents; use only one style.
These are really the only major differences that I can see in the Single Mode screen.
I also have tried booting from the Firewire drive clone on the laptop but it is not an available option for booting. The disk partitions mount but have a lock in the corner and say they cannot be opened because I have insufficient access privileges.

I am at Ramstein AB Germany.  My iphone screen was smashed badly on the flight to Germany this morning.  WHEN I access apple support for this subject it gives me 3 options call now, call me now or call me later.  As I am in Germany with no coverage and no working phone none of those options will work.  Can you get this e-mail to someone who can help.  My iphone serial # is C38xxxxxx. 1) I need to know where and how I can get a replacement somewhere nearby in Germany 2) If 1 is not an option I need to set up an appt to get a to get a new iphone at an apple store in Atlanta GA in the evening of 11 July.
Thank you very much, Phil Edelen

Thanks, my wife is the one serving I am retired and trying to follow her as much as I can.
I will schedule an appt for my next time stateside.  I have spent too much time on many Apple web sites trying to get an e-mail to communicate with anyone at Apple to no avail, only phone numbers. I guess if you are overseas with no international access you are out of luck communicating with them.  I did find one e-mail address but the reply was computer generated and provided useless links.
If anyone has any e-mail address for anyone at Apple I would appreciate it.
    Thanks again,
    Phil

  • IMac 27inch screen shutoff

hi my iMac 27inch screen shutoff automatically. Sometimes I can wake the screen up again but sometimes I can't. Sometimes the screen just turns back on after a few minutes. I sent it back to the place I bought it. They say the either the motherboard or the screen is broken. I have to pay something around 800 dollars to repair it. It almost half price of the computer. Is there any other solution to my problem?

Only if they are wrong about the screen or motherboard being broken.
How old is it? And you did not get apple care when you bought it?
Had you gone to system preferences>energy saver and adjust the time before the screen sleeps?
The "turns back on" kind of is a bad sign for you though... Sorry I am unable to help at ALL.

  • IMac 20" vs iMac 24" : screen WASHED OUT on 20"

I went to two Apple stores and I noticed that the new Aluminum iMac 20" SCREEN CONTRAST is set different from the 24".
I tried using two side by side 20" and 24" and I set the screen settings the same. But not matter what I did the contrast on the 20" was pretty bad. 24" was normal but the 20" was Washed out (when viewing photos, there's no detail in the highlight areas).
Anyone else notice this? Or it just me? I foun this at two stores I went to.

GREAT! I thought I'd read all of the down sides to the new 20" iMacs. How'd I miss this? Well, I knew that with the minor CUP speed bump made to the new iMacs and no "Extreme" option on the 20" I was about to take a beating down the road here...very shortly. That "shortly" is already NOW, I guess. My 20" screen was washed out using the iMac's display color setting, so I went into Preferences/Display/Color and played with the RGB profile settings. This helped a lot, but it made me wonder why Apple would have let it be shipped with their poor "iMac" color profile. Geez, I hope changing the setting, making the screen colors pop, won't burn out this monitor!!! GULP!!! If only our old Mac G4 tower hadn't died a few months back, we'd been waiting so long already and a 20" monitor looked big enough to us.
BTW, where are all of my Apple Loops in the preinstalled iLife '08 GarageBand? I just got this iMac yesterday. Time to do more digging!

  • My ipod nano 6th gen fell out of my pockey and the screen cracked badly, is there any coverage for this under warranty? I just bought it a month ago. If not what are the options for getting it fixed

My ipod nano 6th gen fell out of my pocket and the screen cracked badly, is there any coverage for this under warranty? I just bought it a month ago. If not what are the options for getting it fixed? It is pretty frustrating, it fell from about 3 feet out of my pocket and now looks like it was beaten by a hammer.

he advises restarting by inserting the OSX disc and pressing down the C button to reboot from there then selecting disk utility, hard disk and repair.... Does he mean me to hold down the C key on the alpha keyboard or the ctrl key?
Should I just ask for my money back??? If it is a simple repair do I just literally push the disc in, push the power button and hold down the C button?
That's where I would begin, too, with
    Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.TStatus of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it saysanything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need touse autility like TechTool Pro,Drive Geniusor DiskWarrior
First we need to determine if the issue you are experiencing with the computer is software or hardware based. Once we have gotten things sorted out there should be time enough to make you decision about keeping or returning it.

  • MBP boots to a badly mangled grey screen. Fails to boot the OS and gives me plain colored screens. What to do?, MBP boots to a badly mangled grey screen. Fails to boot the OS and gives me plain colored screens. What to do?

    Early 2011 Macbook Pro (2.0 quad core i7 15")
The only mods is aftermarket RAM (installed more than a year ago and with no problems) and I removed the DVD drive and installed an SSD---again, performed year(s) ago with no problems.
Today, developed a very sudden problem. I was working one minute, but the next, I opened the lid and woke from sleep, and instead of seeing my usual desktop, I saw a black screen with red vertical lines. There has been no rough events (dropping MBP, for example) or any unusual events in the last few days. It has literally been working fine for the last few years.
I did a cold shutdown and tried to reboot. It no longer reboots. It looks like the display is having problems---on the screen, I see a badly jumbled Apple logo. The display looks heavily pixelated, with graphical artifacts all over the place. Eventually the Apple logo disappears (as if it's booting into the OS) but then all I see is a plain grey screen.
I have tried to reset PRAM and also SMC. Both of these are unsuccessful (but for the PRAM, it does reboot when you hold down the keys). I have tried to boot into safe mode. Here you see the loading bar.
But once the previous screen disappears, it is replaced by a green screen. I have tried to enter my password blindly to no avail. It seems more than a display problem. I note also that a) the computer does not go to sleep when I close the lid; (b) if it was just the display, I would have expected the OS to boot.

Can anybody shed some light on this issue?

    tsgm,
you might be experiencing the same problem that is the topic of this long discussion.

  • My iPhone 5 screen smashed and apple did not repair it a phone shop did and now 6 month on my phone has completely broke  can apple repair it if I paid the cost of the bill

MY iPhone 5 screen smashed ages ago and I got a normal phone shop to repair it and that was 6 month ago my battery and the mother board is broken can apple repair this if I was to pay the bill and not asking them to cover anything

No. By having an unauthorized service shop open your phone you have forefited ALL service (both in and out of warranty) from Apple. Apple will never again touch that phone. Take it to the same "shop" that repaired it before.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite and can no longer remote into my work iMac through screen sharing- it is turned on in settings?

My screen sharing functionality did not show up in the dock with an updated icon.  It had a question mark- shows my connections but nothing works, I did make sure screen sharing is on and also connected to VPN.  Once I tried to launch screen sharing nothing happens.  Such an elegant solution in Mavericks not does not work. Ugh. Help!

This is the post that got me set up- I too am running an older version at work vs. Yosemite. As soon as I followed is advice everything worked.
Upgraded to Yosemite and can no longer remote into my work iMac through screen sharing- it is turned on in settings?
I believe the location of the "Screen Sharing" app has changed, which explains why if you had it in the dock it has been replaced by a ?
Don't forget you can launch screen sharing (once your VPN connection is up) by typing in the Safari destination slot vnc://remotemachinename:portnumber  (omit the :port number if you are using the default VNC port, 5900).  This should launch Screen Sharing and put its icon in the dock.  You can drag the Screen Sharing icon to the left of your dock and it will hopefully remain there after you exit Screen Sharing, or you can right-click on the icon when it's running and select Options->Show in Finder to find out its new location and drag its icon to the permanent entries in your dock.
Hope this helps; worked for me.

  • Yosemite installed on iMac purchased with Mavericks now takes 2 minutes to boot and give the login screen.

Downloaded and installed os x yosemite on iMac that was purchased originally with Mavericks. When power button is pressed I get start up audio tone and then the the black screen with the white apple symbol with the progression bar. The bar moves very slowly two about one third and then the mouse cursor appears and there it stalls for around two minutes. After the wait the login screen appears and it operates normally. This whole process before update would only take maybe 30 seconds.
If I try the web recovery process it will revert back to Mavericks any suggestions on what this might be. I do have an external Mac passport pro external drive that does have time machine enabled and has been there for months.
    Thanks

After spending a number of hours with Apple Care personnel I was connected with a supervisor and finally got the iMac to boot up on every attempt and in a reasonable amount of time. Login screen now comes on in 30 to 40 seconds and computer is usable within a total time of 1 minute to 1minute 30 seconds.
Here was the process. Tried to download whole operating system with reinstall from utilities menu at power on and at 7 hours progress bar stalled at one third the way. Reason, time machine external hard drive was still connected during process. Disconnected all external connections except power and tried download again. This time whole operating system downloaded in 15 to 20 minutes. Yosemite installed and rebooted automatically and booted to login screen, signed in then to desktop, but boot took around five minutes. Shutdown and connected all peripherals, i.e.. ext. HD, DVD, printers and tried to start. iMac stalled at 2 minutes into progression bar with white apple symbol before login screen. Removed peripherals and tried again and still stalled and would not boot.
What was done to correct is as follows. Started iMac in Safe Mode, cleared all items in cache from Macintosh HD/Library folder and System /Library folder, system start up items, launch agents, and launch daemons contents cleared, removed printers in system preferences, ran disk utilities verify and repair of disk and disk permissions. Shutdown and removed power from iMac. With no peripherals system then booted normally. Reconnected peripherals while iMac was still on and added printers back to system preferences and all is well.
So it seems only reasonable that the downloading problem was hindered by the time machine external hard drive, to which an Apple rep. agreed and the extremely slow boot up or stalled boot up was caused by items in the start up and launch folders. I will state here that I was using my ISP's anti virus software for the Mac which was in the launch folders and most likely was causing the boot up problems.

  • Customer screen using BADI :  ME_GUI_PO_CUST

    Hi
I am implementing BADI : ME_GUI_PO_CUST to create custom screen at item level.
Pls tell me the steps to be followed to get custom screen using BADI
    Thanks
    Vinay.

    Hi Vinay,
go to transaction SE18, then enter your BADI.The in menu go to Goto -> Sample Code -> Display. You will see example of implementation of this BADI. All these examples are very well commented. Basically you will have to create your own function group with your new screen and call this screen from methods of BADI.

When I turn on my iMac, it shows a black screen and says 'No bootable device - enter boot cd and press any key'.
I'm not sure what to do, I did not recieve a cd with my mac to boot it up (I ordered it online).
Also I can't find my harware serial number (I've tried many times to input what I thought it may be from my receipt).  I saw that I need this number to contact apple support, my 90 day complimentary support is still valid so I wish to contact them.
I don't know much about apple products as this is my first apple computer so any information is helpful.

Hold down the Alt/Option-key at startup of your iMac to get the Boot Selection screen.
From that choose to boot into OSX.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and reset your OSX to be the default.
The new iMacs have OSX 10.7 Lion preinstalled and don't come with any CD/DVD anymore.
Instead OSX Lion includes a new feature called "Lion Recovery".
