IMac G5 see always external display connected

Hey,
I watch movies on my TV with my iMac G5 (i use the mini-VGA adapter).
When i don't use the adapter, the iMac just see the internal display (called iMac), but now it always see an external VGA display.
I tried resetting PRAM, NVRAM, SMU, but no change.
I have installed Mac OS on an external hard-drive to see if it was a config problem, but it's always the same.
That's a problem cause it uses the half memory of my graphic card.
Perhaps the graphic card has a problem ?
I don't know what to do.
Thanks for your help.

Make sure that the PRAM battery is under 4 years old.
Then zap the PRAM.

• Intel iMac won't recognize external display with Dynex mini-DVI adapter

I've got an original Intel iMac with a Mini-DVI connection on the back. I'm attempting to hook it up to an external display (a plasma screen, in fact). I picked up a Dynex Mini DVI to Video Adapter DX-AP100 for Apple. This connector has a mini-DVI connector on one end, and both a video-out and an S-video-out on the other.
When attempting to use the adapter, the iMac does not recognize that there is an external display connected. Here are the facts:
The external display: I've tried this with a Panasonic Plasma screen connected directly through S-video, as well as a Pioneer receiver (one that switches video) connected both through s-video and composite video. And yes, I've got the settings on the TV correct. I've also tried this with a Polaroid LCD TV connected via S-video and composite video.
I did notice that when I click "Detect Displays" while the Plasma was connected, the plasma briefly "flashed", implying SOMETHING was happening, but still no dice.
Anyone have any experience with this Dynex DX-AP100 that could share some wisdom?

Yeah, I realize S-video is limiting, but I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible. The TV is mounted to the wall and there are not currently any DVI or HDMI cables coming out of it. There's an S-video input from my receiver that I'd prefer to use since it's readily accessible already. In the end my goal is to use Netflix "Watch Now" on the TV, so I'm not too worried about video quality.
and before someone asks if I considered that the receiver's S-video input might be the problem...I tried taking the s-video wire from the stereo and plugging it directly into the adapter. No dice.
ONE ADDITIONAL PIECE of information...while trying to get this to work on an LCD monitor, I plugged the composite video connection from the TV into the adapter. Suddenly the Mac recognized an additional monitor, but it saw it as a VGA monitor, not as s-video or composite video, and no signal went to the TV.
I'm considering trading in this adapter for a mini-DVI to VGA adapter, but that really won't help me with the connection to the TV.

• Won't boot with external display connected

My MacBook Pro (circa 1997) won't boot with the external display connected. I can connect the external display (20in flat planel) after it has started, and it works just fine.
I have tried two different DVI cables (one of which I think is a DVI-A cable) and the DVI-to-VGA cable. The result is the same.
During the boot phase I get the tone, the apple logo and the progress wheel. After 30 seconds to one minute those disappear to be replaced by an empty blue screen.

In case anyone wonders, my "solution" was to change to a WB Elements Desktop 3TB (only USB 2.0 is currently available for this model). I miss the speed of USB 3.0, but it's much nicer to not have to remember to unplug and plug in the hard drive each time I boot.
Still hoping to see a proper solution to this (since I don't have the WB My Book anymore, I can't test adaher's suggestion).

• How do I see an external HD connected to my AE ?

How do I see an external HD connected to my AExtreme. My AE is working flawlessly with my Apple and non-Apple devices.  The HD is formatted with NTSB so both Apple and PC can access the files.  The USB HD works fine with direct USB connection. I use AP Utility 5.6 to configure.  The HD is clearly registering as it is on the AirportExpress Utility Disk pane.  I just cannot see it on my desktop or in the finder.  I do have the home network protected with WPA and the HD has a password (which I don't know where to enter in the Utility.  Thanks in advance

Any replies to this one? Anyone????

• My mid-2010 10.8.2 iMac won't detect external displays.

My mid-2010 10.8.2 iMac won't detect external displays. I've tried using a third-party minidisplay port to DVI adapter, as well as an Apple-brand minidisplay port to VGA adapter. The monitor I'm using is a Dell SP2008WFPt. It is a functional monitor. I've tried resetting the PRAM, repairing my disk permissions, rebooting, and doing all sorts of wacky stuff with the order I plug things in. Is there a solution? It seems like lots of folks are having the same problem.
Thanks! This is really starting to make me angry.

If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

• Thinkpad Edge S430 - Windows does not detect external display connected via HDMI

On a Thinkpad S430 with HD4000 integrated graphics, an external display connected via a HDMI cable is not detected at all when using Windows. The system is fully updated as of the time of posting this message, both via the Lenovo Update tool as well as Windows update.
The Intel driver version is 8.15.10.2696. It appears that this is the latest version, since it does not offer an update when I try to auto-update it via Device Manager.
NB: I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.4.0 on the same machine, and the external display works perfectly fine with this software configuration.
Hence I think that it's very likely that this is a Windows-specific driver issue.
Would Lenovo happen to have a driver update in the works? Alternatively, I will be thankful for any suggestions about possible resolution of this problem.

does anyone get the mouse lag with an external display connected via the display port?

You don't describe the problem in great detail.  Is this the issue you are describing?

If so, then, "Yes."  I have the same problem.  Note that this isn't a tracking speed problem for me, it's a lag between my hand moving and the pointer moving on the external display.

• Help: 2011 imac 27" won't detect External Display connected via thunderbolt to HDMI

I have an 2011 imac 27" and I'm trying to connect an Acer 23" monitor as an external display. I'm using a miniDV(thunderbolt) to hdmi cable. For some reason the computer is unable to detect the display. However when I reboot into windows via bootcamp, the display is detected and works perfectly.. Any way to force thunderbolt to detect this?

Well, weird outcome... I took the monitor back and exchanged it for a better model, better brand. The thunderbolt to hdmi cable works fine with this new monitor in osx. Thanks again..

• IMac G5 iSight detects external display when none is connected

Hi,
I purchased an old 17" iMac G5 iSight,in which the screen sometimes suddenly turns to blue and the resolution drops as it detects a VGA display even though no external display is connected. It even shown two displays in the preference panel.
I opened the iMac and checked the capacitors which look okay. I reinstalled the OS and it didn't fix the problem.
Do you have some idea where to look? Or does someone know how to disable external displays?
I found this discussion from another forum: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/172427
...but it's ubuntu so I don't understad what they're talking about?

Make sure that the PRAM battery is under 4 years old.
Then zap the PRAM.

• 27 inch iMac (April 2011) - Two external displays - how?

I've just got a new 27" iMac and have connected two external displays via the mini display port. I can only get one to work, what am I doing wrong?

Sorry that was a dumb typo on my behalf. Here is the setup:
Apple 27inch iMac only bought today, so it's the newest version with the two Thunderbolt ports.
Two seperate external monitors each connected to a seperate port via a DVI cable and Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.
So that's:
iMac x 1.
Thunderbolt port x 2.
External Monitor x 2.
Mini DisplayPort Adapter x 2.
3 displays in total. But when I turn on both displays only one will show up.

• 2009 iMac 21" as an external display

I have a 21" iMac (the late 2009 model, 3.06GHz core duo, running 10.6.8) that I'd like to use as an external display for a MacBook Pro 15" Retina (running 10.8.2). I purchased a Monoprice Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable and connected the computers via one of the Thunderbolt Ports on the MacBook and the Mini DisplayPort on the back of the iMac. Pressing Command-F2 on the iMac doesn't appear to work, though.
I found several references to the 27" iMac, including this KB: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924 ... but no specific mentions of the 21" iMac. In theory, it should be the same bi-directional port on both iMac models. So either it isn't and it will never work, or the $10 cable is sub-par. Has anyone connected the 21" iMac as an external monitor successfully?

Thanks! Guess I'm stuck with a cheap DisplayPort cable I'll give ScreenRecycler a look. Hopefully, it's reasonably fast over wired Ethernet.

• IMac doesn't recognize external HD connected to Airport Extreme

Just bought a new Airport Extreme and an Iomega Prestige HD for file sharing and backup through Time Machine.  When I open Disk Utilities, the external HD is not listed.  I did connect the HD directly to the Mac and it showed up.  I reformatted the disk and then reconnected it to the Airport Extreme...still nothing.  Any help would be appreciated.
Brian

When I open Disk Utilities, the external HD is not listed.
You won't see it in Disk Utility unless the drive is connected directly to your Mac
I reformatted the disk and then reconnected it to the Airport Extreme...still nothing.
The USB port on the Extreme is under powered. You almost always have to use a powered USB hub, even if your drive has its own power supply
backup through Time Machine
Careful...Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port are not supported by Apple. A few users report that they apparently have been able to make this work, but most us encounter corruption issues either immediately, days, weeks, or sometimes a month or two down down the road.
Bottom line....it's "iffy" and there's no support if you have problems, which are very likely.
From Apple: Time Machine can’t back up to an external disk connected to an AirPort Extreme....

• How to restore display on MacBook Pro to original settings after faulty external display connection

Rookie question, 2009 MacBook Pro.  We bought a dvi-VGA adapter to connect to an external display. Got a picture on the external monitor but very poor resolution.  Meanwhile the display on the MacBook Pro re-set itself and we were not able to restore it to normal even after we disconnected the external monitor.  We now have our MacBook Pro with messed up resolution and display, AND no external display.  How do we get the MacBook Pro back to its default display settings?  Any help greatly appreciated!

Re: MacBook doesn't sleep when closing lid with external monitor attached with Lion     Oct 14, 2011 7:01 PM    (in response to admgtz)
I would like to offer this solution.  I have a MacBook Pro with an external monitor, and, for a year and a half both displays slept when I closed the MBPS.  This behavior stopped when I installed Lion.  They would sleep when I removed the power cord, but what a pain that would be.  The command "pmset -g assertions" gave no indication of which process ought be preventing sleep.
I contacted Apple support, and after some searching, the guy working with me found this thread, which was flagged as an Apple-approved solution:

This is the important part:
Correct AnswerRe: How do I tell Lion to disable the LCD screen even when the lid is open?
Aug 31, 2011 9:56 AM (in response to Bob_viking)
Here's the command to make your laptop behave like it did Pre-Lion (courtesy of my friend):
sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0"
Works perfectly for me. If it screws up your system, just zap the PRAM next boot (cmd-opt-p-r) and you'll be back to the default Lion state. Or if you can still get into terminal, this command will get you back to Lion's default state as well:
sudo nvram -d boot-args
Enjoy!
One snag was that I had to run it with the external monitor disabled, but it worked great!

• 2013 iMac 27" and 2 external displays

Hi Guys,
So my setup is a 2013 iMac 27" with a 27" Thunderbolt Display on one side and an 27" Cinema Display on the other...
The question I have is...
Can i configure my audio so basically both speakers on one external display + one of the internal ones become the Left channel and then both speakers from the other display + one from the internal speakers become the right channel
Its a bit hard to explain so i've made a diagram to illustrate:

So I want Speakers 1, 3 and 4 to act as the left channel and Speakers 2, 5 and 6 to act as the right channel...
I've done a bit of reading and Googling and OSX's "Audio Midi Setup utility" (used to create an Aggregate Audio Device) seems to show some promise but I can't figure out how to configure multiple speakers to one "channel" so to speak?
Maybe I need a third party app?
thanks in advance guys

I would love to know the same.
Ideally I would like to have the speakers on the left monitor for left sound and the speakers on the right display to act as the right with the main iMac speakers doing noting?

• Mouse cursor problem when external display connected

When my external Apple display is connected to my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012, 10.10.2) the cursor jumps to a spot on the external display and will not release from it. I move the cursor anywhere and it jumps back to that original spot. Cursor operates normally when the external monitor is not attached. I've used the monitor for a few years with no problem, but this started just recently. I do not use the external monitor daily and I cannot recall doing anything that might have triggered this problem. Any ideas on a fix? Thanks.
Bill

Just an update to close this. Call Apple Support. An advanced support tech walked me through several procedures. Eventually, the problem disappeared after deleting a bunch of plist files and startup items. Which particular file caused the problem we don't know. But problem gone and I will monitor going forward. Hopefully it was a one-time corruption of one of the preference files.
