Imac G5 Superdrive (Matshita UJ-845) being a pest!

Hello,
The Superdrive on my machine (Imac G5 17" Ambient Light Sensor) has been acting strangely the past several days. It will read and play audio CDs just fine, but will not burn audio CDs. Sometimes it will read a blank DVD, and sometimes not. It will play DVD movies sometimes, and sometimes not. The drive seems very indecisive!
Typically, when I put in a disc it "doesn't like", it spits it out after about 30 seconds, or so. Today, that's all it will do (with the exception of audio CDs, which it will still read and play just fine).
I have tried cleaning with a cleaning CD, and also with canned air, and neither have made a difference.
I am curious if there is a more thorough cleaning I might perform by removing the drive from the machine? Or are these symptoms of something more dire?
Thanks for any ideas!

Their are some display adaptors you can get. I have an older Mac Pro with DVI but my monitor is a Thunderbolt Display. This used to be around $250. It is way cheaper now.

  • Intel iMac SuperDrive (Matshita DVD-R UJ-846) DVD Burning Problems

    Hi there:
Having a strange problem burning DVD's now. I have a January '06 intel iMac Core Duo 2ghz, 2GB RAM. My DVD burner suddenly no longer will burn DVD's. When I put in a blank DVD-R, it just spins for a bit then spits it out, no prompt or error message. When I put in a blank DVD+R or DVD-RW, it gives me the usual prompt that a blank DVD has been inserted and asks how to handle it. But when I try to burn, it opens the session, then quickly finishes the session (without any burning) and spits the disc out with an error that burning failed because of an inability to calibrate laser power level for the media. Sometimes it says due to a media error. It also will not read a previously burned DVD data disc, including the OS install DVD that came with the computer. It will however, read and play movie DVD's, and also reads and burns CD-R's with no issues.
I've tried the following fixes with the following results:
    1) Change media. Have tried several different types and different brands. No success.
    2) Burn DVD's from an external firewire DVD burner. Works fine.
    3) Hardware Test via the install DVD (on the external firewire burner). No problems found.
    4) Did a fresh install of the Tiger OS onto an external firewire hard drive, booted from that, and tried to burn. No success.
    5) Tried burning from Disk Utility and Finder. No success.
    6) Put a cleaning CD into the drive and let it run. Still no success after.
System profiler says the drive is ready to burn CDs and DVDs. CDs work, DVDs don't.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this and how to fix?
    Thanks!

If you guys did a search on the optical drives you'll discover that they have a rather extensive
history for failure. the failing optical drive process starts off rather slowly and worsens over time.
You could replace the internal optical drive but rather than performing surgery on your Imac
you would be better off going with an external optical drive.
If your IMac is still under warranty you can have it replace but I would still pick up an external
as well, I have read a couple of threads where even after having the internal replace the same issue
    happened yet again.
I ordered a LaCie that does rather well.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001P5C9S0/ref=oss_product
I did however discover a couple of minor issues with my LaCie...
    1) When the mounts a disc , for some reason the mechanical ejection button
on the face of the enclosure is disabled. This is not a major issue right click and eject or, drag the
    icon into the trash
    2) if you are wanting to lightscribe be sure to go to the LaCie website and download the latest
lightscribe app, the one that came with mine was out of date and did not work in Mac OSX 10.6
    3) My lightscribed DVD's had a problem , the images where filled with rings from the center of the
disc out, I have discovered this is due to calibration , Amazon has shipped me a new Lacie that
I have sitting in a box next to me, I have not had a chance to test out the new unit yet.
You may also look at OWC's optical drives
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
Either way make sure that you go with an optical drive with Firewire.

  • Imac 27" superdrive never works and scratches the discs

    Is it just me?
I have rarely used my superdrive to burn CDs or DVDs since 2009, and whenever i have it is always going wrong.
The disc/drive makes a horrible noise, and ends up scratching the DVD or CD.
Now when i need it the most to burn a dual layer DVD it won't even mount the disc to burn to it?
It just makes awful scratching noises, and then it takes me 20 minutes to try and eject the bloody thing, what is this all about?
Can anyone shed any light or have had similar experience to this? it is a late 2009 27" iMac 2.8 ghz Intel core i7 running 10.9.5
Do i need to buy an external DVD burner, and if so what should i go for?
    Thanks

Try running a cleaning disk in the drive. One with dry brushes only.  No liquids.

  • My iMac and MacBook Pro have stopped being able to find one another.

I have been sharing files between my iMac and MacBook Pro.  Recently they have stopped being able to detect one another.  When I look in the sidebar of the Finder window, neither computer shows the other.  I have file sharing enabled for both computers.  This is a recent problem, and I'm not sure what has changed.  I may have updated software - but don't remember what or when, as I tend to automatically do so when an update becomes available.  I would appreciate any help that you can give.
    Thanks,
    Linda

    Eric,
Thank you.  I had all my settings right - I had checked and double checked.  The one thing I had failed to do - which is the one thing that often helps - is to shut everything down and restart.  I shut the router and the computers down and restarted them one at a time.  They are once more talking to each other.
    Thank you again,
    Linda

  • HT1338 iMac  + USB Superdrive NOT compatible?

I have a 27"iMac whose internal Superdrive no longer writes DVDs or CDs. I tried cleaning ( Wet + Dry methods) with no success.
Instead of a costly repair or a possibly botched DIY fix, I had a cunning plan!
I bought an External USB Superdrive!
Assuming it would just Plug & Play, I am disappointed to find that it is completely invisible to my iMac!
I would have thought that a piece of Apple Hardware would be instantly recognised and kicked into life, but no.
    Can anyone help?
    Cheers.
    Jim Hunter.

Apple's USB SuperDrive requires more power than is normally allowed for an USB device, and therefore isn't intended for Macs which shipped with an internal one. If you want, you can get it to work by editing one of the computer's plist files.

  • IMac G4 superdrive only reads DVDs after leopard install, not CDs-- HELP

I just installed leopard on my iMac G4 and now it only reads DVDs. It will not read CDs. I tried installing iLife and Office from CDs and it does not read them. However, it will play all DVDs just fine. Leopard itself seems to work amazing, only problem so far is the CD issue.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know how to fix this? I would really like to be able to read CDs as well. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Same thing here. Superdrive keeps behaving erratically since Leopard upgrade. Doesn't burn DVDs (some error message saying it doesn't recognize the media). Managed to burn a CD only after full PMU reset but doesn't read CDs anymore (burnt a blank CD on a iMac at work and my mini says the CD is blank). Reads movie rental DVDs ok though (but I don't care, I just want it to work).
Same sort of thing happened to me last year whilst running Tiger. Apple changed the Superdrive. That very model of Superdrive is a piece of rubbish and it looks like Apple will have to change it again. Very glad I tool the 3-year Applecare warranty.
So much for the "it just works", hey?.

  • My imac 27 ``- superdrive accepts and burns CDs and DVDs but no program DVDs. Does anybody has the same problem - or an idea for a solution of that problem?

Hello imac-users, my problem is: the superdrive accepts normal CDs, DVDs and is also burning them - for example music from itunes. But today I inserted 2 program DVDs - photoshop elements / Adobe and ms office 2011 for mac - and the superdrive does not accept them. After some seconds of running and noise, the DVDs are ejected - also no icon for the DVD on the desctop. So I think, it has something to do with OS X and not with the superdrive. Does anybody having the same problem - and an idea for a solution?

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee
    Cheers, Gerd

  • New imac external superdrive and parallels

new 21.5" imac with parallels and windows xp has no audio output and doesnt recognise the external usb superdrive, not 100% sure what im doing with this (hate windows but a necessary evil!)

Did you install the Parallels Tools when you installed Parallels? It's been awhile since I installed but I remember having to install tools while I was running in windows so I looked it up in Parallels help and found this, see if it helps.
    Parallels Tools for Windows
Important: To take advantage of much of the functionality Parallels Desktop offers, Parallels Tools must be installed.
Parallels Tools can be installed in the following Windows guest operating systems:
    Windows 7
    Windows Server 2008
    Windows Vista
    Windows XP
    Windows Server 2003
    Windows 2000
Installing Parallels ToolsIf you chose Express Installation when you first installed Windows, Parallels Tools were installed automatically after the installation. If you didn't choose Express Installation, do the following to install Parallels Tools:
    Start Windows.
When Windows boots up, choose Install Parallels Tools from the Virtual Machine menu.Note: After you choose Install Parallels Tools in Windows 7 and Windows Vista, User Access Control (UAC) may ask you whether to allow or deny the Parallels Tools installation. In this case, you need to allow the installation.
In the Welcome window, click Install to start the Parallels Tools installation or wait for 8 seconds and it will start automatically.
When the installation is complete, click Reboot to restart the virtual machine or wait for 8 seconds and it will be rebooted automatically.
If the Parallels Tools installation does not start automatically after you choose Install Parallels Tools (for example, because the CD/DVD autorun is disabled), you can install them manually:
Log in to the Windows guest operating system and mount the Parallels Tools ISO image by doing the following:
Right-click the CD/DVD drive icon in the virtual machine's status bar and choose Connect Image.
In the Finder window, go to the hard disk folder (normally named "Macintosh HD"), select the /Library/Parallels/Tools/ folder, select the prl-tools-win.iso file, and click Open.
In the Windows guest operating system, open My Computer, right-click the Parallels Tools disc and choose Open.
Double-click Setup.exe to launch the installer.Note: After you double-click Setup.exe in Windows 7 and Windows Vista, User Access Control (UAC) may ask you whether to allow or deny the Parallels Tools installation. In this case, you need to allow the installation.
Follow the wizard's instructions to complete the installation.
To edit the settings of Parallels Tools installed in your virtual machine, use the Options tab in the Virtual Machine Configuration dialog.Reinstall or Update Parallels ToolsTo reinstall Parallels Tools:
Start Windows.Once Windows starts, if Parallels Desktop is in Coherence mode, click the Parallels icon in the menu bar and choose Exit Coherence.
When Windows boots up, choose Install Parallels Tools from the Virtual Machine menu. This option is available only if Parallels Tools are up-to-date. If Parallels Tools are outdated, you will see the Update Parallels Tools option instead.
Check Whether Parallels Tools Have Been Installed
You can easily confirm whether Parallels Tools were installed. Start your virtual machine and look at the status bar of its window. If the tip "Press Ctrl + Alt to release the mouse and keyboard" appears in the status bar of the virtual machine's window, this means that Parallels Tools were not installed. When Parallels Tools are installed, you do not need to press any key to release the mouse and keyboard - they are released automatically.

  • Why does my iMac lose its IP Address after being asleep?

It appears that after an hour or so of being asleep my iMac will not reconnect to the wifi internet. When I open the problem it says No IP address but the problem is quickly fixed by going into diagnostics.
I've done all of the updates, I have reinstalled, and I've tried to change my location several times.
    Whats my computers diagnosis?

Hmmm, is this any more than any ISP DNS Server would do? (A much lesser concern, but I have the NoRedirct Add-on in Firefox. When I type in a misspelled URL like nsojs-,gpi-0skf, it goes to Google, not OpenDNS and I have all Google cookies blocked, as well as Google's link tracking redirects, using NoScript.)
Anyway, I've read the ToU and the Privacy Policy. But it's written in obtuse legalese. What I'd really like to know is what they do in practice. FWIW (and maybe not worth that much)
    2) We have never sold, nor do we have any intention of selling any customer data ever. You have completely taken that line from our privacy policy out of context. All that means is that when you click an ad, our advertising partner (Yahoo) will see your IP address and the typo you made that resulted in you seeing the ad you clicked on. Nothing more.
    http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/hroberts/2008/09/07/opendns-and-firefox-search/
Gen -- We don't do anything with your query history other than pull some stats from them. Moreover, your ISP has a far far more privacy-invasive privacy policy...
And while it's not intended to satiate the tin-foil'ers, we're currently putting together some new features now that will let you turn off all stats collection for your requests. That means we'll bitbucket all your stats and anything even remotely personally identifiable (and not like AOL-style anonymize it, we'll actually get rid of it).
As for being free, EveryDNS.Net is free too and we've been making money for six years. Go figure. :-)

I will continue to research this. Maybe post something in the Lounge.

  • IMac 17" Superdrive won't work..

I can only seem to find an update for the superdrive of the 15" imac. Can anyone tell me if one exists for the 17"? I can't understand why there would be such a difference. I tried using the 15" fix to no avail. Is it possible for me to change the internal superdrive myself or do i need special tools to open the case to install it?

  • My new iMac's internal microphone is not being recognized by other applications (such as Skype or rosetta stone)?

I just bought a new iMac.  I'm having trouble with the internal microphone.  I went to systems preferences> sound, and checked the input levels.  The computer shows recieved sound from internal microphone and a USB connected microphone.  However, no one on Skype can hear me, and microphone isn't recognized while using rosetta stone.  Does anyone know what could be the problem with my internal mic?

I did get an answer to my problem.  It was specifically with skype and Rossetta Stone.  I had to re-install the apps and then do the general upgrade.  It fixed the problem.  Works fine now.

  • My iMac was stolen in a robbery - no files via iCloud (long story).  I have a new iMac which is set up and being used - how do I recover old iMac files from what looks like back-up files showing on my Time Capsule (also being used for this new iMac)?

My iMac was stolen - but I think there's a backup on my Time Capsule (which wasn't stolen). I have a new iMac which I've been using normally; I didn't use the 'Restore from...' option at the start because I thought the Time Capsule had nothing on it.  So how do I now recover files from the Time Machine?  I can see various back-ups on the Time Capsule, from various machines - laptops, etc. - but it's not letting me open any of them to see what they contain. Does anyone know how I access this information?

    Use migration assistant.
    See http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
Although this is only up to Mountain Lion it is still relevant to Mavericks.. only expect Mavericks to kick and buck a lot more.
