IMac G5 system hang - 2 bad 1GB memory modules?
I am experiencing intermittent system hangs, requiring power off / on to recover. Applications run fine for hours, then everything freezes; a few seconds later the fans spool up full bore. There seems to be no logic to the failure. It happens on many different applications, including Disk Utility. No new software has been added recently (other than Apple software updates). This has been occuring for several weeks.
I repair permissions & run disk verify. When disk utility runs completely without hanging (on verify), everything is ok.
Applecare had me trash the ~/Library/Caches & system caches. No joy. They recommended archive & install beginning with Panther. Reinstall went ok until downloading updates for 10.4.8, then hang (might this suggest a hardware prob?).
Rebooted in target firewire mode the cloned drive, then zero'ed the G5 HDD and restored from clone (SuperDuper!). Everything appeared ok for several days, then the same system hang reappeared. I should mention that in the course of sudying this one, I discovered Virex 7.5 was sucking the processing life from the G5; used the uninstaller to get rid of it & the iMac is quiet again!
I have run the Applecare version of Techtools and the Hardware Test Disk, everything passes.
I could do a clean install of Tiger, then use migration assistant to move data from the clone...if I felt it had a chance to solve it. On the other hand, maybe its a flaky hardware gremlin and I'm wasting my time doing reinstalls, and I should hustle it over to the local Apple store.
Update - took iMac for service at Apple store where it failed under stress test with my 2 GB of memory but ran for an extended period with Apple memory. In an attempt to isolate which of the two 1 GB modules was bad, removed one module. Identical failure after 24 hrs. Howver, swapping out that failing module with the second module, identical hand. That suggests either both 1 GB modules are bad (unikely), or some other hardware issue is the problem.
Problem seems to occur most often when starting playing iTunes, or running Disk Utility (repair permissions).
I suppose the next step is to buy 1 GB of memory from Apple and make it fail again. Any suggestions?
Thank you for your posts, I appreciate it.
Skip - I tried a spare keyboard & mouse. Still failed.
MGW - all software is up to date.
DaddyPaycheck - I downloaded memtestosx. It fails testing each 1GB memory module separately (in different sockets). I'm running in multiuser mode and when it fails the entire iMac freezes up (just like it always does), requiring power off / power on. Is this normal behavior when the memtestosx test fails?
I will plan to test in single user mode as the supplied doc states that if the onboard cache is failing it would pass singleuser (cache apparently disabled in singleuser mode) but fail multiuser. Maybe the onboard cache is bad?
Thanks.

Can I expand the RAM of an Equium M50 with 1GB memory module?
Someone told me that Equium M50 only recognise 512 MB memory module. The Toshiba manual does not specify. It is true?
Thank you for any help
CheersHi Francisco
No, this is not correct. The guy who told this was not right and I assume he has no Equium A50 experience.
As far as I know the memory on Equium A50 notebook can be upgraded up to 2048MB.
So you have to use 2 x 1024MB (1GB) memory modules if you want to upgrade the memory to 2GB.
For me its clear. The Equium A50 recognizes bigger memory size as 512MB.
Do you know what modules are compatible and can be used???
On the Toshiba Options & Accessories website you will find the supported modules:
PC2700 512MB (PA3312U-2M51)
PC2700 1024MB (PA3313U-2M1G)
I hope I was clear enough ;)

1GB Memory Modules in 1GHz 17" Flat Panel iMac?
Hello There!
On searching this forum I see that there has been some discussion of people going beyond the stated maximum memory of 2x512Mb by using 2x1GB DIMM's from companies like RamJet.
1. How many people out there have successfully done this?
2. Any problems mixing a factory installed 256MB module with a 1GB in the user accessible slot?
I like to buy my memory from Crucial and, whilst they will sell me the 1GB modules, they won't guarantee they will work or support me. I'm hoping you guys can give me a bit more confidence before I take the risk.
Thanks!IanB,
1. I have 1.5Gb of RAM in my iMac 1.25GHz with no problems. There are numerous other users in these boards with >1Gb RAM.
2. iMac G4's use single channel RAM and so there is no issue with installing RAM in any combination.
3. iMac G4 <1GHz max out at 1Gb. iMac G4 ≥1GHz can take 2Gb. <p>
4. IMHO 1Gb SODIMMs are prohibitively expensive in the UK and probably not worth the extra cost. I've never used the full 1.5Gb RAM available in my system even with EyeTV, iMovie HD, Photoshop Elements and iDVD running together. I installed a 1Gb DIMM and 512Mb SODIMM which is a significantly cheaper combination.
5. Both my 1Gb DIMM and 512Mb SODIMM are from Crucial. The DIMM I bought as a unsupported/guaranteed as a specific part-number and the SODIMM I ordered through their iMac G4 page. Crucial only support Apple's specs even though they are essentially wrong.

System hangs at shutdown with rt73usb module [SOLVED]
Since upgrading to the latest kernel (via standard Arch repos - not testing!) my system now hangs with a general protection fault error when shutting down, or though infrequent, randomly when browsing. Through some searching I have discovered this error is related to the use of the rt73usb module, and am able to reproduce the error by removing it (modprobe -r rt73usb).
I have seen that others have experienced the same problem, and in some cases reverted to the legacy rt73 drivers, an option I have tried by compiling and installing from AUR source. However, whilst the new module is 'hang free' and able to pick up my dongle, getting a network connection with a WPA encrypted key is not something I have achieved with either wicd or netcfg, in the first instance getting a 'bad password error' and in the latter an "ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Operation not permitted"; each of these tools use the wext driver to 'talk' to the rt73 module, which I think is where things fall down.
Before upgrading to the 3.0 kernel (coming from a CD install), the rt73usb and kernel were harmonious, but I had bigger problems in random x-server closures, so downgrading is not a remedy.
What therefore is my best solution in terms of (a) getting a connection with the rt73 module, or (b) getting stable rt73usb modules?
Last edited by Skipper_the_eye_child (2011-11-12 04:11:00)I've not investigated the issue within the last few days, but only got so far with rutilit: as before rt73's rausb0 interface was picked up, but no connection was made. Frustratingly, Rultilt gave me nothing in the way of error reporting : all i've so far is an excerpt from /var/log/message:
[stuart@myhost ~]$ sudo cat /var/log/messages.log* | grep rutilt
Password:
Sep 19 16:08:08 myhost kernel: [ 60.675310] rutilt[819]: segfault at 84 ip 00007effa9ac1c64 sp 00007fffa0728660 error 4 in libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0.2400.6[7effa9a53000+ad000]
libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0 is provided by the GTK2 package, so I am not convinced this error is related to my connection, or lack thereof. This however is all I have.
If you are wanting to try out rutilt w/ the rt73 module for your own exploration, to save you some time...
Rutilt can be got here:
(snapshots exist at later dates)
http://arm.konnichi.com/2009/11/01/community/os/
The patched rt73 module can be compiled and installed with yaourt. If you receive an 'smp_lock.h error' at compilation then creating a null file at /usr/include/linux should resolve this:

Two 1GB memory modules don't work on MS-7173 board
Hi,
I have an old MS-7173 (RC410M) board, with 1 memory stick of model: Kingston KVR667D2N5/1GB, 1.8v.
I bought another memory stick with the exact model.
I tried them both, but I get a computer restart once windows starts booting.
Each of them works on its own, on either slots - tried all combos.
This proved me that slots and sticks are fine.
Only when placed together they don't work.
I tried switching between them, but it didn't help.
In the BIOS the Timing is set to AUTO.
According to the manual it should support this configuration.
Any clue why this doesn't work?A couple things could be the problem as to why they do not work together:
Even though they have the same part number, the chips on the sticks may come from different manufacturers and not be compatible.
The memory voltage might need to be raised to 1.85 or 1.9 volts to get them to work together.
Try raising the memory voltage in the bios first and if that does not work, you will probably have to purchase a matched pair of sticks to get them to work together. -
IMac 24" Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz Memory issue
I just received a refurb iMac 24" Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz that came with a single 1GB memory module. I bought a 1GB module from Crucial. When both modules are installed, the computer doesn't chime and doesn't have any screen image nor does it boot. After doing some tests, I'm thinking that perhaps one of the slots is defective (bottom slot). Both modules work fine when installed on their own in the top slot. However, neither modules will allow the computer to POST when installed individually in the bottom slot. So this is definitely not a matched-pairs issue.
Has anybody seen this issue? Actually, if you're using one module, can you install it in either slots? None of the kb articles mention to populate a particular slot first when only using one module. I don't mind sending the computer in for service, however, it would nice if Apple were to send a functioning system back with the single 1GB module...David
It sounds like you have pretty well worked thru the issue with that slot. Note: it will take more force to install a module for the first time into a new slot. If your sure that the module(s) were completely seated in that slot, I would have to agree with you that the slot is the problem. If you take it in to be looked at take both your modules with you for the tech to try. If you are sending it back don't send your new module, install the original module in the non-working slot, and let them sort it out.
Hope this helps you!

Which 1GB memory do you use for your iSight iMacG5?
Hello all,
I just got my iSight iMac 20" couple days ago and want to upgrade with another 1GB memory, so I am wondering which 1GB memory module do you use or purchased from?
I have looked up samsung and crucial, and I found newegg.com provides the best price so far.
So please let me know what memory you have and where you got it. Thank you!
By the way, will memory become cheaper during thanksgiving?http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820147147

Matching Memory Modules?
I recently bought a new iMac G5 with a 1GB memory module pre-installed. I have added a 1GB memory module and I am wondering if there is any way for me to tell whether the memory is matched, that is, operating at a 128-bit data path. I read about matching memory here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300082 . I am mainly wondering because after installing the module I have not noticed any improvement in speed or performance. The additional module that I bought is by Crucial (part # CT12864Z40B.M16FD). The factory installed module is by Micron (part # MT16VDDT12864AG-40BD1). The new module that I received looked physically different from the original one - it is more narrow and the chips are smaller and square (vs. the rectangular chips on the originally installed module) but all of the technical specifications listed for it were the same as for the one originally installed in my system. So I donÕt know if that would make them not a Òmatching pair.Ó In the system profiler it does say that there is a total system memory of 2GB but I canÕt find any information as to whether the data path is 64-bit or 128-bit. How can I find this out?
Thanks very much for any help,
WadeHello All,
I ordered a second 1 Gig DIMM for my iMac G5 (rev. B) on Monday. My original module was a PQI brand 1 Gig with 16 chips (8 on each side).
The new one that arrived, is a generic assembled with Motorolla chips and also has 16 chips (8 on each side).
I spoke with the guy on the phone at Other World Computing (the place I purchased the original module from and the new module).
I explained to him that I wanted to end-up with a "matched" set that would provide the 128-BIT communication.
He told me that he would look up my original order, and get me a module that would match.
I mentioned to him that I had heard that the modules needed to be identical if they were to be recognized as a matched set and be utilized with the 128-BIT path.
He told me that you don't really need to go that far. He said that they just need to be the same size (capacity) and speed.
My modules do appear to be "matched" according to the Terminal Script, and the "testgbusG5us" utility I mentioned previously (see other post). So, they are reportedly communicating at the 128-BIT rate.
In my system Profiler, the original PQI module is listed as:
PC3200U-30330
The new generic module is listed as:
PC3200U-30440
So, they appear to not be 100% identical, but they are recognized at a "matched" set.
I haven't been able to find a translation on the Internet for the numbers after the dash. But, the limited information I could find indicates that the first number "3" in the 30xx0 number is the CAS rating.
So, it appears as though they are the same size and speed.
Anyone know what the other numbers mean?
Anyway, I thought I would post what I found for the benefit of others who are thinking about buying another module. -
Can I migrate RAM to new memory module?
Sorry very novice user. I bought this Mac a year ago with only two memory slots with only one 512GB memory module installed. I recently purchased and installed memory (2 - 1GB memory modules), and it didn't start up. I assumed that the "start up" stuff was on the 512 that I took out.
Aaah, so I put the 512 module back in and now I am running with 1.5GB. What am I doing???? Help me please. I want to copy the "stuff" from the 512 to the 1gb that is in the other memory slot currently, so that I can take out the 512, and run with 2gb of memory. Is this possible?
I am so confused?!?!?Hi jojotagmaulgrl;
I concur with Allan Jones.
I would like to suggest that you try the other 1GB card in place of the one that is working and see what happens.
If what I think is going happen does boot with only 500 GB. Then that 1GB card is bad and you will have to return it for a new one.
If it boots and say 1.5GB then the first time one of the cards probably was seated correct. I would try once more to see if both work.
Please let us know what happens.

Changing memory modules in Satellite M30X-165
The Notebook has two memory modules with 512 MB each module. I have received a used 1 GB module.
Can I remove one of the 512 MB modules and install the 1 GB module to get total 1,5 GB RAM or need both modules the same memory size?According notebook specification you can upgrade your machine up to 2GB of RAM so you can use one 1GB RAM and one module with 512MB. Important is that you use 100% compatible memory modules.
Just for your info: compatible PC2700 1GB memory module has part number PA3313U-1M1G.
Make upgrade, test it and post some feedback. -
Slow iMac, kernel_task using 1GB memory
My iMac has been running slower and slower over the past year or so. The problem seems to come and go, but I have been noticing increasing tendency for applications to hang, or to get stuck for minutes with spinning beach balls. I've been carrying forward software and installations going all the way back to OS X 10.0 (from previous machines) and I probably have made some poor choices regarding installing third-party software in the past.
I've seen some very helpful advice in this forum given to others (for example, here) so I thought I would post my problem here.
I've been watching Activity Monitor, and the only thing I've noticed that seems consistently out of place is that kernel_task is using about 1GB of RAM. (It was using about 2GB of RAM until I uninstalled Virtual Box, which clearly was a big part of my problems).
I am fully backed up redundantly (locally via Time Machine and remotely via BackBlaze). I'm holding off upgrading to Yosemite until I can clean this issue up (unless you think it would help).
Below you will find posted two diagnostic reports. The first is EtreCheck, followed by the results of the Terminal script posted by Linc Davis in this thread
I hope that's sufficient to help the geniuses reading this forum give me some advice. Thank you in advance for your help.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

Memory issues - kernel panics / system freezes with 1Gb Memory Card
I've recently updated my PowerBook OS to 10.4.7 and now more recently 10.4.8.
Prior to this, i had been running a pair of pc2700 memory cards (1x1Gb + 1x 512Mb) bought from crucial technology on 10.3.9 with no problems.
During the upgrade, i experienced complete system lock ups and kernel panics. pulling the 1Gb card resolved the problem.
So i thought it could be duff memory (it happens). I ran hardware checker, both long and short tests, ran memchecker from single user and there was no reported errors although i was still getting crashes.
I returned the memory to crucial and they replaced it and then i went to reinstall memory in the pb.
Once reinstalled, problems re-emerged. Both System profiler and iStat pro show both memory sticks as ok. both are pc2700 DDR.
i tried just the 1 Gb stick in alternate memory slots. with the memory in the lower slot i was getting system freezes, in the top slot i was getting kernel panics.
I've pulled the 1Gb and reverted to 768Mb (512Mb lower (crucial)/ 256MB (apple) upper) and i'm back to normal.
Now what?
As my mac is getting on, i'd like to get as much RAM in it as i can, ideally the 1.5Gb /2Gb which it can support. I'd be suprised if it could be the memory stick being duff (2 duff in a row?), its not a faulty memory slot as system profiler is showing that its full.
Any suggestions? Anything to do with how 10.4.8 handles the memory addressing?
Any help would be appreciated.
PowerBook G4 1Ghz FW800 Mac OS X (10.4.8)I've had that problem, too. I found out that it was one of my memory modules that were broken.
I'd say pop back in your other memory module, then get out your PowerBook DVD and stick it in Restart your PowerBook while holding down the Option Key on your keyboard until some buttons start to show up on your screen.
Select the Hardware Test one, then click the Arrow button. It'll boot into a utility and you can run a hardware test that includes checking your memory.
If any of your memory is bad, it'll show up like "**ERROR ERROR**" and give you a code.
After you've identified the hardware problem (hopefully just the RAM), then you can go to Crucial's website and fill out an RMA request to have the memory replaced. I'm pretty sure Crucial has a life-time warranty on their memory products. -
I'm a computer novice, no technical knowledge whatsoever.. need your help
I use an Intel iMac, 4 GB RAM running on 10.6.8 for over a year without any glitches
2 days ago, noticed that the HD space was reducing rapidly from startup..
Activity monitor showed that fseventsd [and to and extent kernel_task] was using all the free memory and then the virtual memory was being used, system hanging within a few minutes of login
The same happens with the other user account and the guest account.. But works fine in safe mode. Windows XP through bootcamp works fine.
Unable to run any program long enough to obtain any results as the system hangs in no time
I ran disk utility and verified and repaired lot of differing permissions [Lot of SUID warnings could not be repaired] . Disk seems to be fine
Not sure these are related:
-2 days prior to this , many .mp4 files, which I had downloaded from Youtube were vanishing [and sometimes reappearing, but not for long] from a folder on my Seagate ext HDD
-Couple of days prior to that, Vuze [which uses the same seagate HDD] was making the system hang, requiring a forced shutdown
-From a week prior to all this, Picasa was asking for update, but could not be updated
This is the Etrecheck report [run in safe mode]

Can anyone help me with upgrading memory in my older iMac? I currently only have 1gb of memory so as you can imagine my machine is quite slow. I check in my system profiler and it shows I do have a memory slot open. It is using a DDR2 and I was told that the latest are DDR3 and I need to find out if I can run that on my model number. This info came from a tech guy at best buy.
That is what I needed. You can upgrade to a maximum of 6gb of ram and need the following type:
200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM. You can easily find it online, here is an example: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo_PC2-6400 -
System hanging when it runs out of memory
Hello,
my system has a finite amount of RAM and swap (it doesn't matter, to my purpose, if it's 16GB or 128MB, I'm not interested in increasing it anyway).
Sometimes my apps completely use all the available memory. I would expect that in these cases the kernel kills some apps to keep working correctly. The OOM Killer exists just for this, doesn't it?
What happens, instead, is that the system hangs. Even the mouse stops working. Sometimes it manages to get back to life in a few seconds/minutes, other times hours pass by and nothing changes.
I don't want to add more memory, I just want that the kernel kills some application when it's running out of memory.
Why isn't this happening?
Right now I'm writing a bash script that will kill the most memory-hungry process when available memory gets below 10%, because I'm sick of freezing my machine.
But why do I have to do this? Why do I need an user space tool polling memory usage and sentencing applications according to a cheap policy? What the hell is wrong with my OOM Killer, why isn't it doing is job?!Alright, you won, now quit pointing out my ignorance
Your awkish oom killer is a lot cooler than mine, switching to it, thanks!
I did some testing (initially just to test the oom killing script) and found out that if a program tries to allocate all the memory it can, it gets eventually killed by linux's oom killer. If instead it stops allocating new memory when there are less than 4MB of free memory (or similar values) the OOM won't do anything, and the system will get stuck, like if a forkbomb was running.
That's it, this program with MINSIZE=1 will be killed, while with MINSIZE=4MB will force me to hard reboot:
#include <string.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#define MINSIZE (1024*1024*4) // 4MB
int main( )
int block = 1024*1024*1024; // 1GB
void *p;
while( 1 ) {
p = malloc( block );
if( p ) {
memset( p, 85, block );
else if( block > MINSIZE ) {
block /= 2;
return 0;
Guess I'd need to go deeper to understand why Linux' oom killer works like that, but I won't (assuming the oom killing script will behave).
