Imac G5 to Linksys Network AND Airport express(AX) for music, lost internet

G5 is connecting to wireless linksys network but no longer getting IP address (nor connecting to network to configure AX and itunes doesn't see remote speakers) Using DHCP, can see Mac addresses on Linksys web configure screens.
I had the G5 connecting to Linksys Network WRG wireless router accesspoint through to DSL modem. This has worked fine for months. Also connect to this network with WinPC. All using WPA Personal security password.
CD Player died, so I purchased the Airport Express to play music to my stereo.
I did get the Airport Express configured...although many tries. I had to turn on broadcast of network name or SID in the Linksys webconfig. Music did play from G5 but I somehow lost the ability to connect to internet. Firefox gave "cannot connect" message. (Safari Network Diagnostics cannot fix issue) When I stopped and restarted the Airport(on G5) the music quit playing. Still have green light on Express. WinPC still works fine as well, HOWEVER:
G5 says that either(depending on which Im trying) that Airport is connected to "wireless network name" but doesn't have ip address OR that ethernet is connected but doesn't have ip address. I see on linksys that the mac addresses are "on". I've restarted everything, I've trashed the sys config folder and restarted G5...still same issue. Again WinPc works fine. Using DHCP...
Any ideas on how to get my G5 back on network? and then I can try to have the AX work again.
No tunes, and now no internet...help?

  • Linksys WAG120N and Airport Express - Does this work ??

    Hi,
    I just replaced my Linksys WAG54G by a WAG120N modem-router.
I still have a problem with my Airport Express.
Everything was working fine with the WAG54G but since I'm using the WAG120N I always got the same problem.
After switching OFF-ON the Airport Express, I can only see it during a few minutes in the Airport Utility. After this, it disappears (until next reboot, etc.).
I've used the same setup/config for my modem-router (compared to the old one).
    Firmware has been upgraded.
I've completely re-configured the Airport Express.
    I've re-installed the Airport Utility.
I've also tried to use other channels, etc.
When I'm using the WAG54G, I do not have any problem !
Is this WAG120N finally compatible with the Airport Express ?
I'm really needing some help (before bringing it back to the vendor and selecting another model) !
    Please, it's urgent !
    Thks

Yes it is visible during a few minutes when I switch it off-on.
I can then access the config and change some parameters but after those +/- 5 minutes it disappear from the Airport List.
... and this is also true when you have the AX directly connected to your iMac via Ethernet?
I just want to be sure that the AX itself is not potentially fault.
When joined to another wireless network, of course, it will be dependent on the "stability" of that network. One other thing that might be possible is if you have the new Linksys configured for any special type of mode. One that I can think of is called "burst" mode. Another is wide-channel mode for the 2.4 GHz band. Neither of these are supported by the AX and may be a reason that it keeps dropping the connection.
Finally, were both routers purchased in your country and are made to operate there? I've seen this problem before when, for example, an individual buys a router, let's say, to be used in Japan and tries to operate it in Europe.

  • Itunes, wireless networking and Airport Express

    Hi,
I currently have an AEBS and I am considering getting an Express to extend my network and stream iTunes to my stereo. My network is wireless for my Laptop and hardwired into my two desktops.
I know that I can set up Airtunes, but sitting near my stereo is a small hub (thats connected to my AEBS) that feeds media to my Xbox media centre. Can I connect my Airport Express to this hub via ethernet to receive iTunes then using the speaker cables feed music to my stereo or will it only work wirelessly in Airtunes mode?
Also, can you extend the wirless network with your Express by having it wired into this hub then re transmitting the wireless signal or will wireless netwrk extending only work completely wirelessly?
    Thanks

    Hi Martin,
what a co-incidence - i just bought an IMAC and also have the thought of archiving all my CD's (about 1000) on some kind of harddisc-server, and then be able to access this archive via my Imac (wirelessly), and stream the music to my Hifi system and feed it into my Digital/Analog Converter. Do you think the time capsule wld be ideal for the function of storing/archiving and streaming to the hifi system..? I guess I also need a seperate "Airport Express", as it has an optical- digital output into my Digital/Analog converter...
Thanks for your thoughts and kind regards from Singapore !

  • Problems with DSL wireless network finding Airport Express to play music

Can anyone help me out here....
I have an airport express that I can not get my wireless network to find. I plug it into the ethernet to set it up then it reads.... "AirPort Utility was unable to find your base station after restarting. The settings for this base station have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the base station. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again." I am not trying to do nothing more then plug a powered speaker into it to stream my itunes to another room. Im not trying to use it as a bridge or anything like that. I am using a verizon supplied Westall DSL modem/router.

Hi. I think that you want to set up your Airport Express as a client to your router. The information is here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302153
Be sure to disable your WEP on your router otherwise your AE won't be able to communicate with it. You can restablish it when you are done.
Another point is that, when using WEP, the airport express might create a different HEX key than your router -- even if you use the same passphrase. Check your router's hex number, copy and paste that into the space provided in the Airport Express's admin utility.
Make sure that you identify your SSID on the Airport Express, too.

  • Airport Express + Airtunes for music, 3g tethering for internet?

    Hi,
I'm having problems with my ISP and considering using my 3g data plan as my primary internet solution, tethering with my iPhone.
The only reason I haven't done this until now is that I seem to have to turn airport off in order to use 3g, and that means no music through airtunes.
Is there a way I can keep the music playing through airtunes while 3g tethering is on?

    Hi,
    That worked for me:
go to system preferences/Network. on the left hand side there will be list of devices: (probably your phone), Airport, Bluetooth, Ethernet. Below that there is +,- and setting icon, go to setting and there is ""set service order".
I have my 3G internet first and Airport last - and it is working fine.
    All the best.

  • Linksys router and Airport express

I need to add a AX as a router to a Linksys router, so I can add a guest network on the AX.. The Linksys router is wired only.. Can this be down and how?

try eliminating a hop. instead of connecting to the router, connect to the Express, assuming it is setup to act as a remote base station.
if you are connected to the router via wireless, to reach the AEX, you are having to go thru the router first, then to the AEX. A direct connection to the AEX will reduce ping times, etc, thus possibly providing a more stable connection to attached speakers.

  • New iPhone and Airport Express

I wasn't able to find a direction to go with my issue through "search" so I thought I'd just throw this out there if someone has an idea.
I am connect by cable modem to my iMac (not wirelessly) but use the Airport Express upstairs for my stereo for itunes and it works great. My iPhone registers my "wireless" connection when I go into wireless mode, accepts the password and shows the signal but then hangs up and I get "Safari can't open the page because it could not connect to the server" message. I've reset all the devices and still can't get past this message. My iPhone will connect wirelessly in other locations but I'm baffled that I can't get it to work in my home.
Is there some setting I'm missing? Any suggestions would be helpful (the Apple store didn't have an answer for me)!

    Hey Somawise,
Start by updating the iPhone http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305744
What is the IP address of the iPhone? Goto Settings> Wi-Fi> tap the blue (>) next to your network.
If the iPhone has a 169.254.x.x IP address take a look at this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58618
What wireless router is the iPhone connecting to? Is it connecting to the Express or do you have another router?
What type of wireless security is being used? How many characters are in the network password?

  • How do I set up iPad with airport express to stream music to stereo without internet connection?

how do i set up iPad and airport express to stream music to stereo without using internet connection.

Your 4th gen iPad does have the necessary software to connect to the AirPort Express but not to administer it. To do the later, you would need to install the AirPort Utility applet.
You said that your iPad can "see" the AirPort's wireless network, but can't connect. What happens exactly when you attempt to do so? Do any of your other wireless devices have any trouble connecting to the Express? Did you configure the Express for a closed network ... that is, not to broadcast its Network Name?

This has been automated in the v6 utility. I am used to doing it manually in v5 utility which is also fairly easy.
Apple doco is also good to read.

    Note.
You cannot extend the guest network unless everything is up to date 7.6.3 firmware. And that is only with the TC as the main router in the network.
All apple routers can be configured as the main wireless or as the extend wireless.. so don't worry if a post uses express or extreme or TC.. they are for wireless, the same thing.

  • Can an older Round Airport Extreme and Airport Express be used on my home WIFI network?

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro to a newer one because I was having problems with the older one getting on my home WIFI network.  It had been dropped, but had continued working without any hiccups for five or six months.  Suddenly it won't go online.  It said there was no WIFI hardwae installed.  I suspect that the WIFI antenna connection between the main bdy and the display failed.  Repair options at the Apple Store were iffy, so I just baought the new one.  My Time Machine backup smoothly cloned my old machine onto the new one.
In the "when it rains it pours" category, my Airport Extreme also failed at the same time I began having problems with the old laptop.  Suspecting the hardware was the problem after checking with my ISP, I purchased a new Airport Express at Best Buy.  Using it, I got my WIFI network back up and running.  That's why I figured there was a problem with the older Airport Extreme.  The Airport Extreme was replaced by an Apple Genius at the store, when I purchased the new laptop.  Putting my Home WIFI network back together with the new AE, went fine, but it turned up another problem.  I use an older (pre-N speed) Airport Express to link a YAMAHA digital piano wirelessly to my WIFI.  It can go online directly and download music.  I can also push my iTunes wirelessly through the piano's amplifier and speakers for great sounding stereo.  The problem is my new AE won't recognize my older Airport Express.  I tryied downloading the Airport Utility v. 5.6 as suggested online, but It still won't find the Airport Express hooked up to the piano.
Is there any way to update my earlier Airport Express and also an older Airport Extreme (round)?  The Airport Utility v.5.6 won't recognize them and initialize them.  Any ideas?  I repurposed the new Airport Express I bought to seerve my printer, allowing me to disconnect the USB cable from my iMac.  That's working fine, except my HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 now won't give me two sided printing anymore.  It always something!
    Network consists of:
20" Mid 2007 iMac running Mac OS Lion 10.7.4
New 15" MacBook Pro running Mac OS Lion 10.7.4
HP Officejet Pro 8500 All-in-one Printer
New Airport Extreme attached to DSL Modem
New Airport Express wirelessly attaching my Printer to the network
Old Airport Express (A/B/G) connecting my Yamaha Digital piano (NOT WORKING)
Old Airport Extreme (round) (NOT WORKING)

    Bob,
Thanks for your help.  At this point, I'm seriously considering replacing the older "g" AX with a new "n" model.  For whatever reason, each time I've tried to bring the ols AX bcak online in my network, it only managed to screw up my network.  Using the Airport Utility 5.6 for Lion, I was able to get a green light on the AX, but it still would not go online from my Yamaha digital piano control panel, like it always did before.
Using AUtil 6.0, everything else works, and I'm assuming that setup with a new "n" speed AX, my piano will be able to get back onlune, too.  When I originally set up the AX to link the piano to my WIFI network, I had very little trouble getting it setup.  YAMAHA didn't list the Apple AX in it's list of compatible wireless routers/adapters, but I saw no reason that it wouldn't work.  As I said it was a reasonably easy setup the first time, and it has worked for several years with no problems.
It's not the cost of buying the new AX that bugs me, it's the fact that I can't figure out why it won't work now when it did before.  It was working fine with my old AE based WIFI network, even after upgrading the my computers to the Lion OS.  I used to be reasonably savvy with Apple technology, having spent the last 15 years of my teaching career (1987-2001) as the tech liason for the schools where I worked, supporting first Apple II's, then Macs, and networked buildings.  After eleven years of retirement, I find it harder and harder to keep up as the technology just keeps evolving.  I'm trying, but it's not easy!  Any and all help is appreciated!

  • Network set up using airport extreme, time capsule and airport express

I have searched for relevant answers but can only find different bits here and there.
My set up is as follows:
I have a Linksys wireless router running a stable wireless network for the other computer users in the house and wish to create an extended, additional network using airport extreme connected to the Linksys by ethernet to create the network and then time capsule close to my Mac Mini on my desktop and airport express at the other end of the house to try and extend the range of the network.
I have been trying for 4 days to set this up but without success. I have tried all of the options mentioned in different posts, using WDS, extending a new network etc. I can get connection between the three devices but monitoring on iStumbler there appears to be little improvement in the strength of the signal, iStumbler also shows the time capsule dropping it's signal totally every 10 or so seconds for a few seconds and then I get a positive signal strength for another ten seconds or so.
Can anyone help, it is driving me insane. I am a recent convert to apple computing and have been hugely impressed with all products until now. The claim that the set up of these wireless products is simple seems to be very exaggerated.
I am happy to provide any relevant system or hardware information.
    Thanks in anticipation.

I have an AirPort Extreme acting as a wireless base station, connected to a BT router by ethernet.
Then the correct setting for Connection Sharing on the AirPort Extreme would be "Off (Bridge Mode)".
If I set Connection Sharing to "Share a public IP address", I'm told that:  "The DCHP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your Apple Wi-Fi base station"
Exactly. You have two routers....The BT device and the AirPort Extreme in series with both of them trying to act as the "main" router when you configure the AirPort this way. That won't work.
Only one can be the main router, and it must be the BT device in your setup. So, the AirPort Extreme....and any other AirPorts on your network must be setup to work in Bridge Mode to allow the network to operate correctly.

  • MIxed Wifi and Powerline Network with Airport Express

Can anyone help set up a network using both wifi and ethernet?
I currently have a BT Home Hub ADSL router providing wifi throughout my house and 2 airport expresses to stream music from my iMac.  The problem is that the sound occasionally drops out.  I've tried most of the common fixes from the discussions but nothing seems to work reliably.  My next step is to try and use powerline adapters.  If possible I want to use the following configs simultaneously:
    1.     BT Home Hub (Broadband) to wifi throughout the house inc my iMac.
    2.     IMac to powerline adapter to powerline adapter(s) to airport express(es). I have 3 200Mbps adapters.
    Thanks in advance.

Each AirPort Express that is connected to the network using an Ethernet connection should be configured as follows:
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab located just below the row of icons
Assign a separate name to each AirPort Express
Assign a device password for each device
    Adjust Time Zone settings
Remove the check mark (if present) next to "allow setup over WAN"
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as your BT wireless network
No check mark needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) a good choice
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same security setting as the BT wireless network. If settings are not exact, the network will not function correctly.
Wireless Password = Same password as the BT wireless network
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and allow the AirPort Express to restart
When all Express devices have been configured, power down the entire network....all devices...order is not important
Start the modem/hub first and let it run a few moments by itself
Start each AirPort Express one at a time about a minute apart
Sart each network device the same way until everything is powered back up

  • Airport Express stopped playing music and iMac doesn't see it

I had set up an Airport Express to stream music from my iMac to my stereo.  Worked well for a day or two then stopped.  I tried to re-establish the connection but Airport Utility doesn't even see the Express any more.  I tried the reset button on the bottom of the Express but that made no difference.  When I plug in the Express the green light shows briefly, then steady amber for a few seconds followed by flashing amber.  The Express is within range of my network but to make sure I tried plugging it in to an outlet a few feet from my router.  Airport Utility still didn't see it.  Is my Express toast or am I missing something?  Oh, yeah, I'm using a Belkin router but that didn't seem to be a problem when it all was working.
    Appreciate any help.

    Hi Lowell,
I spent some more time with this last night and was able to get back up and running, albeit with some oddities.
I had previously tried a reset with the AX unplugged.  I finally realized how silly that was and did another reset with the unit powered on and right next to the iMac.  After some hesitation, it was seen and recognized.  I was then able to set it up in the livingroom, connected to the stereo.  For some reason, when I first tried that after the reset, the iMac once again didn't see it.  I brought it back to the desk, did another hard reset and set it up all over again.  This time it worked although I can't for the life of me figure out what I did differently.
    Oddities:
When I first reset it, the AX went from solid to flashing amber.  When I got it playing with the stereo, no light at all showed.  When I got up this morning, the unit was showing a steady green light.  I don't know what that's about.
While it plays strong and true much of the time, there are dropouts.  Sometimes these last only a second or two but other times can last for up to a minute, with some raggedness upon re-establishing the connection.  Do you know of any way to overcome that?
    Thanks for the help.

  • Extending Network With Skh HD, Time Capsule 1TB and Airport Express

    Hi,
I'm struggling to achieve what I thought to be an easy setup process.
    *What I want to achieve?:*
    * Ground Floor - Sky HD Router with Sky Wireless Network & Time Capsule 1 TB(choice to connect Time Capsule by either WAN Ethernet or over wi-fi?)
    * First Floor - IMac and MacMini connected wirelessly, along with Airport Express to extend wireless network
    * Loft - Apple TV connected to Cinema setup, with need to be able to connect to Sky HD Wireless network
Note/Problenms: It doesn't appear to be possible to extend the Sky HD Wireless Network via Time Capsule using the wireless option? Error reads "not able to extend wireless network etc...". Secondly, as a result the WiFi signal in the Loft for the Apple TV HD is 50% approx. The download speeds for movies etc is also sufficiently slow that repeat buffering is required. Not ideal.
    *Current Setup:*
    * Ground Floor - TC connected to Sky HD Router via WAN Ethernet cable. Creating New Network, named exactly the same as the original Sky HD Wireless Network e.g. "SKY08323"
    * First Floor - IMac and MacMini connected wirelessly to SKY08323 network. Airport Express connected wirelessly to same network.
    *Possible Enhancement?*
I've tried a couple of times to extend the range of the Wireless network. I First tried to do this as explained by extending the Sky HD Router network wirelessly (not possible it seems). I then connected via Wan Ethernet and setup TC and AirPort Express to interact over a WDS. TC = Main Base Station and AirPort Express = Relay Station. This seemed to setup ok but once both were restarted both TC and AE were flashing Amber and AE was no longer visible in Airport Utility.
If someone would be kind enough just to outline a step by step approach for setting up my Sky Network and being able to extend it via TC and AE, then I would be really grateful.
Many thanks and Happy New Year!
    Eugene

If someone would be kind enough just to outline a step by step approach for setting up my Sky Network and being able to extend it via TC and AE, then I would be really grateful.
As you have surmised, you will NOT be able to extend the wireless range of your Sky HD Router with the Time Capsule (TC) ... at least not wirelessly.
You basically have two options: 1) Run Ethernet between the ground floor and the loft, or 2) Consider deploying Powerline adapters. These adapters take advantage of your home's electrical circuit to create a pseudo Ethernet one.
In either case, the two routers would be interconnected by Ethernet and the TC could be place in the loft. You would then reconfigure the TC as a bridge to allow the Sky router to continue to provide both the NAT & DHCP services for all network clients regardless of which router they are connected to. In addition, you would configure the TC to use the same Network Name & wireless security type so that, for example, you could roam with a wireless laptop between floors and still be on the "same" network.

I'm looking for some help connecting linksys IP Cameras to my home network to monitor my property when I'm travelling.  I used to do this with linksys WAPS, but since I've discarded all my old linksys networking and standardized on airport, I can't get these things working.  I know that I have to identify my camera through the DHCP table and set up port forwarding and there is the problem.
My network consists of 4  base stations set up in a roaming network - same network name and passwords.  I need to do it this way so I don't have to switch network when I move from one side of the house to the other, go to the cabana, or my shop in the barn.  The network works pretty well since I went to a roaming set up.  Good performance, yata, yata, yata.
However, the roaming network requires the AEBS's to be set up in bridge mode, rather than sharing an ip address.  When the AEBS is set to  bridge mode, you don't see a DCHP table or have the ability to identify your IP Cam through the AEBS - and hence, no port forwarding.
I am able to identify and set up my Linksys IP Cam by locating the ip address on my FIOS router, even though, it's plugged into an AEBS.  I set it up, see the video, remove the ethernet cable from the IP Cam, restart - and I can't get to it from an AEBS.  In researching this, it appears, I should be setting up the AEBS to "share an IP Address", going to the DHCP table and identifying the camera's IP address and setting up port forwarding.  However, you don't see any of the DHCP or port forwarding options in Airport Network Utility when configuring in bridge mode.
I'm hoping I'm missing something here and that the solution isn't to set it up at the FIOS router level, but I'm beginning to think that's my only hope.  What concerns me there is that I should be able to see the IP cam on the network without port forwarding since I'm not coming from outside, and I can't even do this unless it's connected hard wire.
I'd appreciate any insight into this that anyone might have.  I've hit the wall with what I know.
    Thanks.

In a roaming network, your "main" router is the device that would require port mapping/forwarding to be configured in order to access the IP camera from the Internet. This router is also the one that would be provide the private IP address for the camera which you will want to be a static one.
So as you described your network, the IP cameras should be getting an IP address or you assigned it a static one and this is the address that you would enter in the Private IP address (or equivalent depending on the router used) field when setting up port mapping.
If you are not able to access this camera from the local network, then this should be troubleshot first.
