IMac G5 Trouble with OS 10.3.5 Reinstall

I reciently upgraded to 10.4.11. I had some kernel panics and the machine went to gray screen when booting and never came out of it. I booted off the 10.4 disk ran disk utility, it failed. (I can't remember the error message )Tried to load 10.4 back from the disk with archive and install. It failed also. Gave an error when it got to the part when it verified the disk it was writing to. Went back down to the original install disks, ran hardware test, it passed. loaded 10.3.5 with archive and install. This brought it back, but now none of my programs that use a network connection will launch. ie... Safari, Mail, iTunes ect...Or if they do launch they crash almost immediately.
I do have active network connection. I have tried to reinstall 10.3.5 but same thing keeps happening.
Can anyone shed any light on the possible problems?
Thanks,
Pat

  • IMac G5 trouble with iSight

I bought my imac from a friend a while back and it has a webcam and i can use it online (myspace, stickam, etc.) but the computer doesn't have iLife, photobooth, or any other regular programs anymore. i was wondering if there was any way to use the camera to take pictures without these programs or a way to get them back if not.

    Welcome to Discussions, Zaquery
I can offer you a few additional alternatives (in no particular order) for your consideration.
    (1) If your friend included the software DVDs that came with the iMac G5 (iSight) when you bought it from him, you can install the iLife apps and any other bundled apps you want by following the instructions in the User's Guide documentation that came with the iMac.
If you did not get the documentation, you can download and then save it by clicking the following link:
      http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iMacG5-iSight-UsersGuide.pdf
    (2) If you did not get the disks, you may be able to buy iLife '06 or iLife '08 by searching local markets or the internet. An iMac G5 (iSight) running Mac OS X (10.4.11) can use either of these iLife versions, but it cannot use iLife '09 without upgrading your Mac OS to 10.5.6 or a later version of OS X 10.5.
    (3) If you plant to buy the upgrade to a 10.5.x version of Mac OS X, you can install it, and then use the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update. Doing so includes several ways to use your iSight and gives you the latest OS that will run on your iMac. 10.5.8 will also allow you to use the latest iLife '09 software.
Do not try to upgrade to Snow Leopard because Mac OS X 10.6 and later will NOT work on your iMac.
    (4) If you do not plan to upgrade to 10.5, and if the install and restore software disks that came with your iMac have been lost, you will probably want to replace your iMac's original disks. Use your iMac's "System Profiler" utility (it is in your Finder > Go > Utilities folder) to find your iMac's Serial Number. Then you can call "1-800-SOS-APPL" for help with replacement disks. There may be nominal costs, but they can explain that to you.
Once you have the software disks for your iMac, you can install the apps you choose or restore the iMac to its original configuration and use all those iSight-enabled applications.
    (5) Depending on how your current Mac OS X (10.4.11) system software was installed on your iMac, you may be able to make snapshots with your iMac as currently configured:
(5.a.) iChat is part of Mac OS X (10.4.11), and it can use iSight to take snapshots
by using the following commands (even when off-line):
             • use the iChat > Video > Video Preview menu command
                    - then -
             • use the iChat > Video > Take Snapshot menu command
The saved snapshot file will appear on your Desktop.
(5.b.) If Tiger (Mac OS X (10.4.11) was installed using the disks that came with your iMac,
you may still have the Photo Booth app.
Try using Spotlight to search for "Photo Booth" (without the quotation marks)
to see if it is still available somewhere on your Mac.
    (6) Some of the apps shown in the following list may be of interest for your iSight use:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013310
You can individually check the terms and system requirements for any of these apps that are of interest.

  • Imac having trouble with startup

My iMac is currently having issues starting up.  When I press the power button it will boot up and take me to a gray screen. Once it's at the gray screen a loading bar appears. At that time, the computer shuts back down.  I've been able to startup and go to disk utility but that has been no help.  When verifying the disk, the messages "invalid key length" and "the volume macintosh HD could not be verified completely" appear.  Any ideas?

    Hi nickrsnider,
I understand that you may be seeing a gray screen while attempting to boot OS X. Take a look at this link, which describes your issue and may be able to help you troubleshoot this issue further:

  • Trouble with iLife after OS X reinstall

I am having a hard time understanding what I am doing wrong.
Last week my system would shut down on restart. I did all I could to get it to work but it would only start in safe mode. After some phone assistance from SOS-Apple. I reinstalled Tiger. I saved my previous applications to the "Prior system" folder and the reinstall helped. I then attempted to merge all my applications back to the new OS but it seems I did something wrong. The iLife applications would not work properly. No iPhoto, iWeb, iDVD, Garageband, nothing!
I kept getting the following message "To restore the missing files, use the iLife installer to reinstall iLife". It did this over and over even after trying to reinstall. Nothing! I uninstalled all the iLife applications, restarted the system, reinstalled and STILL nothing.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Before trying to reinstall the iLife applications check in the HD/Library/Receipts folder for any receipts for any of the iLife applications and delete them. Also check in the User/Library/Preferences folder for any iLife application preferences. They would take the form com.apple.iPhoto.plist. If there are any delete them along with the iLife applications and then try again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I am feeling so ripped off right now. I have wanted a Mac for years and believed the hype about it's stability and I have had more trouble with this Imac 2011 than I have ever had with a pc. It locks up with several software products from APP store. I have already had to have a technician to look at it and really couldn't figure out what the deal was.  I was told that the APP store software should give me no problems but the truth is that it locks up on the software. This machine is only 4 weeks old and I am using 37 g on a 1 T hard drive. There is no reason for it to be locking up. Also, when I try to use the help program, it always tells me that I am not connected to the internet even though I have used both the mail program and the browser with no problem just before that. I successfully used the help program on my pc lots of times. I did not need a $2000. plus machine to just get email. I just wanted to unload on somebody that might understand my pain and after checking out this site...I think there is a few of you out there.

I was told that the APP store software should give me no problems but the truth is that it locks up on the software.
The apps downloaded from the Mac App Store are written by third party developers, not Apple. If you have problems  with those apps you need to visit the support area for their websites. Launch the App Store, locate the app name. You should see a support link.
when I try to use the help program, it always tells me that I am not connected to the internet even though I have used both the mail program and the browser with no problem just before that
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.helpviewer.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash. Restart your Mac, try the Help menu.
If you need help finding that file, hold down the Finder icon in the Dock then click: New Finder Window. From the menu bar top of your screen click: Go > Go to Folder. Type this in exactly as you see it here:   ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist    That will take you right to that file.
(.plist) files stores information about a particular app or in this case, the Help viewer. Often times deleting the .plist file resolves the issue.
It's fine to "unload"... we understand that you expect your iMac to be stable but there are times when things go awry. That's why we have these forums so that you can you get help.

I have installed OS X Mavericks on macbook pro, macbook air & iMac but I am having terrible trouble with apple Mail. I need to take all accounts online frequently OR worse I have to quit mail and restart computer. Is anyone else having problems?

I just checked to see if the update to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 solved any of the issues outlined in my previous post, and to my dismay, nothing has changed -- all of the previous problems persist.
My iMac (8) -- it's renamed itself eight times since the recent troubleshoot with the Apple tech rep -- shows up as a shared device in Finder on my MacBook Pro, but when I click on it, I cannot establish a connection using "Connect As".  So I've attempted to connect using the menu "Go/Connect to Server...", using both (alternately) the iMac's name and IP address, to no avail.  I get a message which reads: "There was a problem connecting to the server 'Peter's iMac (8)'. This server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
    Here's what I know:
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) does exist;
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) is available at this time;
    The server name -- Peter's iMac (8) -- is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The server IP address is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
The network connection is active when I attempt to connect.
I'm convinced the problems stem directly from the OS X Yosemite update.  None of this was ever remotely an issue in the previous OS X's -- any of them.  This is maddening!  What can be done?  Apple?? Anyone???

  • Hi, having trouble with my iMac on startup. Background screen appears, but no icons,

Having trouble with my iMac- on startup, the background screen appears, but no icons. The spinning beach ball appears for quite a long while, then when the icons finally come up, when I open a finder window, the only icons to appear are the Network and Macintosh HD icons. I've tried to repair disk permissions: this came up with heaps of errors, which it then fixed, but the original problem remains.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
    thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Same problem(s) in safe mode?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Trouble with Mighty Mouse and iMac

Something weird happened today. I moved my iMac to my fiance's home carefully packing it up in the box it came in. After unpacking and setting it back up, I got these audio "bleeps"(the noise the the computer makes when you press a button that doesn't execute anything). Problem is, this happens even when I scroll around the display. I intially thought that something was wrong with the mouse (or else a key was depressed on my keyboard-which it wasn't), so I changed to another 3rd party mouse. No bleeps coming from the iMac. So just for curiousity, I plugged the mighty mouse into my Macbook. NO NOISE. Now I'm wondering what the heck is up? Why does my iMac react to my mouse this way while my Macbook has no issues? Why does the iMac work fine with a non-Apple USB mouse? The might mouse came with the iMac and is not the wireless one. it worked fine up until this afternoon.
    Any suggestions???

okay so I bought another MM at Best Buy. Brought it to my house and it worked fine with my Macbook. So i go to my fiance's house where I have set up my iMac 17". Lo and behold I STILL GET THE BLEEPS. What's more, the mouse makes a physical clicking noise- not through the computer but on the MM itself. ***??? So I start trouble shooting. I unplug all of my HDs and music peripherals. The MM still makes the clicking noise and keeps trying to execute things on the desktop even when I'm not pressing the front area. Then I get the idea to take the iMac downstairs as I recall that I used my initial MM on my Macbook in the kitchen and it worked fine. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. So what in the **** is going on here? My MM is NOT wireless so why is it that ALL of the power outlets on the 2nd floor of my fiance's place screw with the MM?
Is there something on the iMac that I need to change in terms of power handling so it wont be so damned sensitive. mind you, this problem also occurs when using the MM and MAcbook upstairs. What gives???
I would really appreciate some clarification as to what this might be? RF noise?
I' come from many years of being a PC and chasing down problems but this has got me stumped!

    Hi Chuck,
TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
I'd avoid vesrion 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.
SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

    http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/
Might also look into iCab & OmniWeb versions.
    Also...
The last really supported Flash for PPC was 10.1.102.64, but if it's for like Facebook or such, people have been fooling FB to think they have a leter version installed.

(If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, contributor Texas Mac Man suggests the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the latest version:)
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

  • Mouse troubles with iMac Summer 2000 DV with OS 9.1

    Hello all,
I have recently inherited an iMac as above, but am having trouble with it. I don't have a keyboard for it, but i do have an old school apple mouse for it. The mac starts fine, but when you are on the desktop you can move the mouse around, but you cant click on anything. Aside from this everything seems fine. I have been using macs for many years now, but am stuck as to what the problem could be. My only thought is that it might need a keyboard just to function.
if anyone could shed some light that would be amazing.
    many cheers

    Hi, mmemarc -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Unlike earlier Macs (perhaps ADB-based ones, certainly the very early ones with phone-connector type keyboard cabling) which would not fully boot, if at all, if a mouse and keyboard were not present, the USB-based Macs will boot satisfactorily whether or not a keyboard and/or mouse is connected. This is in line with the hot-swap nature of USB.
Old mouses (old hardware of any kind) can be suspect. Unfortunately, in order to test that you will need to get a functional keyboard for the Mac in order to use startup commands.
You need not use an Apple-labelled keyboard; there are many 3rd-party keyboards which work well with Macs, even with OS 9. One company in particular, Macally, offers keyboards for Macs which are also compatible with Mac startup commands - and they are less expensive than Apple keyboards.

This subject has been talked/written about a lot, after Lion was introduced. A solution from Apple has not yet been published, everybody is waiting.
