IMac G5 turns off by itself, hard to turn back on...

I purchased my iMac in 2004 - so it looks like I'm past Apples extended "problem parts" warranty. At one point, I had to replace the midplane board, which Apple sent me and I did myself. No biggie - I've built a number of PCs myself.
OK, so if I walk away from the iMac while it's running, it will shut off after a short period of time. It doesn't go to sleep - it just shuts completely off. If I keep it busy doing something (running iTunes music or something), it will run all night with o problem.
Once it's off, it takes any number of tries - two or three, to 20 or 30 sometimes, of hitting the power button to get it to turn on. Once it's on, it's fine again. I read somewhere that there were some bad capacitors in a number of units, but thought the midplane replacement probably took care of that.
So, I'm probably looking at a bad power supply? Would that be the consensus? Is there another component I need to consider replacing as well?
Don't mind trying to replace this myself as well - what would be considered the best place to order a replacement?

You can find a power supply [here|http://www.welovemacs.com/6613350.html], but I would first look at your Console at the time the machine shut off to see whether it notes "maximum temp exceeded for more than 30 seconds" to make sure it a power problem, although I'm puzzled as to why it doesn't turn off when stressed. Also, take a look at the caps on the motherboard and see if they are swollen or oozing.

  • IPhone suddenly turn off by itself, won't come back on

My iPhone suddenly turned off when i wanted to unlock it to check my messages(i'm really sure that it has 80%+ battery during that time),here's what i did to get it turn back on,but it still wont on:
    1) I plug it to my pc (but my pc says it's an unknown device and it also says that Windows has stopped the device because it has reported problems)
2)i hold on to the home button and the standby button
    3) i charged it
I tried all these steps above but it still wont come back on,please help me,i cant live without my phone!

How long has it been off?  I have over-heated mine before a few times... (hot car, heating pad...) and it shuts down completely and will NOT come back on until it cools down.  I'm not saying this is your problem, but if it did over-heat it will come back on when it cools down.

  • My iMac Intel shuts off by itself and restarts

    Hello,
This mac seems to sort of shut off on it's own. It doesn't completely turn off though. It doesn't really go through the boot process... it just goes back on as if it were sleeping. Unfortunately, it does it while I'm working on it. I could be just surfing the web.
    Can anyone help?

  • Has any one figured out how to fix an issue I'm having. My iPhone 5 randomly shuts off by itself. Then it won't turn on when i try to hook it up to iTunes it says its in recovery mode. so then i hit restore and its been stuck on waiting for iPhone.

This happened after I did a software update on my phone about a month and a half ago. My phone will randomly shut off by itself and wont come back on. I had spoke with an apple repair person over the phone who told me to hold in the home button and then plug it into my computer. When the iphone said that there was an error and gave him a code he suggested that I send it in. So I did and about a week and a half later I get it back and its on. Yet the problem still occurs. It shut off twice in the same day and for several hours would not come on. When it did I called apple again and they ran a diagnostic on my phone and said it was a software issue. So then why was it not fixed? They told me they could not duplicate the problem. And now it happens about once or twice a week now. And its happening right now. I have it plugged into my computer and the apple logo with a bar below it has been on for about 20 min now. And itunes is still saying "waiting for iphone."

    Hello Elliiee,
The steps detailed below can help stabilize your iPhone.
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?

  • Imac powering off by itself

    Hello,
This week my G5 20" iMac began powering off by itself. The CPU temperature is steady at around 70˚. I removed the back panel and cleaned the dust from all vents and fan ducts and it still powers off unexpectedly.
    Serial number: QP527011T9U
Will anyone make suggestions or recommendations of how to repair this issue?
Has anyone else had this problem? edit...looks like I am not the only one. I did not purchase apple care so I fear this may come out of my pocket. I hope not though. I just want it fixed!
    Any help is much appreciated.

Get yourself a firewire external drive, at least as large as your internal drive, then download SuperDuper!, which will make an exact bootable clone of your system. You can schedule automatic back-ups, and then be secure in the knowledge that whatever happens to your drive, you can have the contents at your finger tips. SD! also makes incremental back ups, changing on the clone only the data that has changed on your computer. This makes the backups (after the first one) very fast.
    Hope this helps,

If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.  I just bought the Airport Express and it's not clear how I should set up my System Preferences for Sharing.  Thx

Yes. Unfortunately the stereo is too far from the wired ethernet connection   My iMac is connected to the internet using an ethernet cable from the DSL modem (plugged into the wall, not wireless).  The Airport Express is plugged into an outlet 25' away from the iMac and connected to my speakers.  I've turned on the iMac Airport wireless Internet Sharing, hoping to stream iTunes to the Express connected to the stereo.  The iMac Airport picks up several neighborhood networks so I know it's working (and I connected my iPhone wifi to it just to check as well).
When I use Airport Utility to set up the Express, the only time Utility recognizes the Express is when the iMac Airport is off.  When I turn on the iMac Airport, the Airport Utility immediately loses the Express and asks to rescan.
Maybe that explains my problem better.

  • IMac turned itself off and won't fully turn back on

My iMac turned itself off this morning; all I was doing was typing, nothing intensive. It wouldn't turn back on.
I first got a wired keyboard and mouse and tried resetting the SMC. No success.
Next I took out and put back in the RAM (and it was unplugged). After repeatedly pressing the power button, I got a single beep out of it. I personally don't think it was high enough of a pitch, but I read that it might've been because the computer didn't read any RAM.
I might've again taken the RAM out, this time also unplugged. After more repeated pressing, the fans came on, but then dead again.
The third time, the fans came on and half of the dong played, but it was cut off.
The forth time the dong fully played, but a second after, it turned off again.
All of these times involved unplugging the computer for a few seconds and then repeatedly pressing the power button; I might've taken the RAM out all of the times too, but I don't remember now.
Two or so weeks ago, I did have a kernal panic while I was editing in iPhoto, and I believe it's the first for my iMac. About a month and a half ago I had a graphics problem where using exposé to show all windows caused the whole screen to become jagged 'shards' of colour (it reminded me of broken pieces of glass). While a restart fixed both of these problems, the graphic problems are not new for this iMac (though I had never had the shard effect before).
Two more little things that I'm unsure if they're related: last night, it turned itself on from sleep, but it does this every other night, so I don't think last night's special; and every time I got it to turn on, I felt that I had to give the power button just a short burst of force, as if holding it for even half a second wouldn't get it to turn on.
Does this sound like the logic board, or less expensively, the power supply? Since it attempts to come on here and there but gets cut off, what does that say with respect to the logic board?
The computer turned one year in August 08, and there's no AppleCare. Even though the warranty's gone, would Apple have any negative view if I opened it up to get my HDD? I can get the screen off with three house suction cups; my HDD was last backed up four days ago, and of course, I had just typed about 3000 words for a story I'm working on between last night and this morning.
And lastly, if I make an appointment with the Apple Store (two hours from here...) and they want to take it in, will they take out my HDD right there and give it to me if I don't take it out? Four days is so tremendous in this situation. I will not part with my HDD.

Perhaps. While I guess they're certified, I still trust Apple the most. Also, if it is a logic board problem, and it is widespread, hopefully this could be free. I don't know how a reseller would handle such a situation. I just want a file off my HDD!
I can confirm that it never really powers on unless it's been unplugged for at least a few seconds. So far, the longer it's been unplugged, the longer it stayed on. There were hours between the times I almost got into my account, and then the login window.
I again switched the MacBook and iMac's RAM, but doing this makes a senseless result. The MB's light simply stays on (no fans or screen, but when I turn it off, I do hear it 'de-whir'), and the iMac just quickly turns on and then off, as it has been after a 5-30 second unplugging session.
I guess this is the rebellion of a Revision A machine.

  • Why my iMac 27 2010 turn off by itself?

Why my iMac 27 mid 2010 turn off by itself?
I already replaced the Power Supply part number 661-5972. The next thing is replace all the thermal sensors and then the logic board. I do not have any other way to find out what it 's wrong with it.
Last the same time that the old power Supply. Let it sit for a few hours. Turn back on and works fora few more days or weeks ans suddenly turn off again.
I am 66, started out with Apple around 87 as an independant service provider here in PR and have never had so much problem with any other mac's than this one.
Apple support provider here in PR have no expertise what so ever in giving us solutions to problems. Even thought I still doing some support to some of the old customer I am handicap with new technical tools to solve problems within new products. I wish Apple would have consideration on the old ones that help and support apple products without their help.
Thank you for reading my note!
    Jose A Marrero

    I can relate Jose
Have you looked under the hood of a newer car, worked on a new toaster or coffee maker..? Most all of them have sealed components that are no longer repairable, you throw the old part away and replace it with a new part or just replace the whole thing.
Heck' for the most part even the Geniuses at the bar are unable to fix or do anything about most hardware problems. So instead of trying to fix a product that is under warranty, they either send it out or replace it with a new Mac, Pad, Pod or Phone on the spot.
As another Apple user like yourself with some hands in experience and some time here in ASC, it sounds more like either a overheating graphic's chip or bad SMC chip than a temperature sensor problem. Both of which the normal Hardware Test will not catch.
So on that note: I would probably closely monitor all the temperature sensors (especially the GPU temperature) with iStat Pro or Temp Monitor to see if you can catch an overheating component that is causing the shutdown.
It also might help to post the Consol Message for the shutdown here in the ASC forum.

  • IMac turn off by itself

    Hi everybody
My iMac has been turning off repeateadly in the middle of a job. When it does it, I cannot turn it on again inmediately. I have to wait to next day, some times even longer. If the cable is plugged in, I cannot turned it on. I've tried everything. Changing the cable, changing the power font, etc. Some people say the problem is with the mother board. As a consequence of this, my disk drive didn't work anymore.
I have been told this is a factory problem and that Apple is recognizing it. Does anyone know abot it?
    Thank in advance

T update; I get the blackout without the restarts and tried all the suggested remedies on these forums with no relief. I can see light from the grill covering the ram access port so I do not think it is fully shutdown but will not respond to any wireless input devices so I must press the power bottom on the back to restart It which it does in a normal fashion. The machine does not seem to be running hot (much cooler than my black Mackbook) . I guess I will be bringing it in but I do not feel optimistic given the posts by users who did so and did not get a fix. I think this issue will take some time to resolve. I just wanted to add my two cents.
